The All Hallows' Icon: A Harry Fox Origin Story

Rate this book
When the power of a long-lost relic returns, only one man can stop the evil waiting to be unleashed.

Harry Fox only wanted to buy a sword. A Roman battle sword which contained far more than he realized. Only when his deal goes wrong and the seller ends up dead does Harry realize the sword contains a message from the past, written by the two most powerful men of their day - a Roman Emperor and the Pope.

Harry must race to uncover the truth behind the sword, battling a fascist group intent on reviving a horrific chapter of Europe's past. Dodging ancient traps as he unravels the shadowy messages from the past, Harry discovers the sword's message and the fascist's goal all revolve around the pagan celebration of Samhain. A celebration now called Halloween.

From pagan Brittonic tombs to Roman Catholic monasteries, Harry is now in a struggle not only to recover the treasures left from centuries ago. Treasures which can prevent a modern fascist revolution - or unleash it if he fails.

Step into Harry Fox's second mission and discover the truth behind the most mysterious holiday of all.

“All Hallows Icon” is a fast-paced thriller featuring the early days of relic hunter Harry’s Fox. It is the second installment of the Harry Fox Origins adventure series and fans will appreciate the holiday themed story centered on the Celtic history of Ireland and Scotland. Think Indiana Jones meets Halloween. It centers around the quest by a cabal of Neo-Fascists who want to weaponize the ancient relics in an attempt to disenfranchise the Catholic Church. It primarily focuses on the ancient ritual of Samhain…the pagan roots of our spooky holiday. It’s up to a young Harry Fox, in league with the Vatican, to thwart their efforts. As always, the action is fast as the storyline is blended with a healthy dose of Celtic history. It is a comfortably quick read just right for a lazy day in front of the fire or perhaps a long plane trip. An enjoyable read for old and young alike. I do recommend reading the previous book in the origin series,”The Midsummer Treasures” as several plot points are in common with this story. Enjoy.

Author Andrew Clawson has a talent for writing action scenes; in his book, “All Hallows Icon,” the action begins immediately. This makes the story an adventure that is both entertaining and educational. The locations, of the historical events, are mostly in Italy and Ireland. Mr. Clawson has put together an intriguing historical fiction book. The facts about the complex history of Halloween are revealed in a quest for artifacts in Italy and Ireland. As the story unfolds, the relationship between pagan and religious beliefs is unveiled with surprising results.
The characters are unique and complex, with good and bad aspects to their personalities and backgrounds. They seem to be real and not stereotypes.
The protagonist, Harry Fox, and partner Lauren Brosnan of the Irish Heritage Society, guide the reader through the action and events. At one point, even the Pope gets involved in the story . . . and the mafia!

There are mysterious artifacts, secret hidden places within preserved historical and public landmarks, and traps left by ancestors who wished to preserve the Irish history, mythology, and treasures. Harry Fox must find, interpret the ancient messages, and then hunt for the treasures by using his own wits and physical strength.

Can this book be read as a standalone novel? Definitely, Yes. Although, after reading this short novel, you will probably want to read the other books in this series. I have enjoyed every one that I have read so far.

I received an ARC (Advanced Reader Copy). This is my honest review of the book.

Some locations/settings: [Italy: Florence (Plaza della Signora, Uffizi Galleries, Arno River, Ponte Vecchio bridge, Palazzo Vecchio museum), Rome (St. Peter’s Basilica, Catacombs of Priscilla); Vatican City; Brittainia (the Romanized name for Roman occupied England and Wales); Scotland: Iverness (Iverness Public Library), Ireland: County Meath (Loungcrew Cairns—also known as Sliabh na Callaighe – also known as Mountain of the Witch), County Tipperary (Slievamon Mountain); Mentioned: Uragh Circle in County Kerry, Brooklyn in New York, Hill of Tara in Ireland]

Harry is about to acquire a relic sword when he is attacked, the seller killed and the sword ending up in a river. Thinking that he blew it, he is approached by a catholic cardinal who gives him enough information to send him on his latest quest back to Ireland and Lauren. Together they read the clues and look for the relic but, at what price? Because, evil is also looking for this relic to use it to bring down the Catholic Church. Fast paced with awesome attention to detail of the Irish landscape.

I am lucky enough to be on the Advance Reader Team.

This is the second book in the Harry Fox Origin Stories. Harry is on another quest and it starts with him buying a sword in the very beginning of a book. But as we know, nothing is easy or goes to plan for Harry. From a message found from an ancient Pope and Roman Emperor, Harry ends up in the Vatican archives, ancient caverns in Scotland to ancient tombs. Harry has to stay one step ahead of the bad guys. Another great adventure story. Read the first book first - The Midsummer Treasures.

Meh

Not Mr. Clawson’s best, any book with so few pages tells a story with little imagination and intensity. Because Harry’s character was so well developed before hand it leaves little to work with when cycle back to his past. Additionally, the other characters are also thinly developed.

Harry is off on another adventure that takes him from Ireland to the Vatican. Along the way he finds himself working with an old "friend" who helps him find the relic he seeks and maybe some romance as well.

A fun archeological thriller. It's like an appetizer before the main course of the Harry Fox adventure series. Short, fast moving and to the point with liberal doses of ancient riddles, treasures and traps.

I like Harry Fox, and this book was a fun read, but somehow less "meaty"? than the "latter" books.
Maybe it was just me. but I felt it was written for a younger audience.

Received as ARC Harry is back in Ireland looking for a gift to the pope from a heathen king. As usual great plot and characters Really like these books when Harry's dad was still alive, and Harry was increasing his relic hunting skills
