"Foul play? Becca Baxter suspected her parents' fatal mishap was no accident especially since her estranged relatives profited handsomely. Taking a position as research assistant to her late cousin's husband, Max Duncan, enabled Becca to investigate secretly on the family island. Yet the mullioned windows of Windigo Manor hid more than just the broodingly handsome widower. Someone, or something, seemed eager to drive Becca away, raising fears that a creature known only through Ojibwa legends stalked the island. As events spiraled out of control, Becca's strong faith sustained her, but could she trust Max with her life and her love?"

This book was absolutely unhinged. I picked it up in amish country, my interest peeked by the categorization of an "inspirational romantic suspense" story. A category I've never dipped my toes into.
Boy, oh boy.
It was actually pretty fun to laugh at the insanity as our heroine Becca set out to the small upper peninsula island to discover who murdered her parents.
She infiltrates her estranged grandmother's home under a pseudonym and begins work for her cousins windower, surrounded by her male cousin and his wife, her previously mentioned employer and his brother.
She is on this island for all of four weeks and has, by the end of the story: -had 4 attempts on her life -kissed both her employer and his brother -said I love you to her employer -been proposed to by her employer following the last attempt on her life carried out by her soon to be brother in law -discovered she is not her dad's bio daughter but her UNCLE'S daughter (no joke, there's not one faithful couple in this whole story)
This author did THE most. It's 243 pages long and there are 2 boat explosions, 5 deaths and many attempted murders lol.
Im just saying, inspirational is a funny way to categorize this one. What a crazy ride.

3 stars & 3/10 hearts. I’m not a reader of mainstream christian romantic suspense, so this was very much a venture into a new genre for me. I’ve heard a lot about Colleen Coble, so I was curious how I’d like her writing. Apparently this isn’t her best work, but I found it was a good intro for me.
I really liked the setting. The loneliness of the Windigo estate on that little island with the small town, surrounded by Lake Superior… it was just intriguing and fun. The characters fit in well. Max was a complex guy… so gruff but really hurting and desperate for love. Tate was so sad! I liked Jake & Wynne, and Becca was nice too—it was fun having a super tall female MC! Molly was cute, and Gram was lovely. Nick & Shayna I disliked from the beginning. The other characters were all too “suspicious;” I felt like they were thrown in to amp the whodunnit factor. But they made for an interesting storyline.
While I kept reading to find out who was the killer, I found the story wasn’t too suspenseful. I wasn’t even really worried about Becca. The constant seesaw between attraction and suspicion between Max & Becca intrigued me, although I was bugged that she kept thinking “gotta keep my distances” but didn’t reject his kisses and touches like she did Nick’s. The romance was very much looks-based, and I felt like Max converted simply to make it possible for Becca to marry him, and I was tired of all the skeletons in the closet, unfaithfulness, hatred, and greed; but overall the story was a quick, interesting read with enough of a mystery to keep me intrigued but enough calm to keep me from being too anxious. And I liked how it tackled the topics of being honest and being a good witness as a Christian.
Content: kissing & touching between Becca & Max, before they’re even supposed to be a couple. Several attempted murders. Several affairs + elopements/divorced are believed to have occurred or about to occur, and some did occur; one of the MCs is the illegitimate child of a man’s wife with his brother.
Windigo Twilight is a gripping, exotic suspense-filled tale that takes place on a mysterious island across the horizon from Lake Superior. A weathered mansion, massive pine trees along the cliff's edge, the sound of the surf crashing below, and rumors of the evil Windigo spirits all lend to the mystique of this dark, cryptic isle.
Rebecca Baxter believes her parents' death due to an explosion on their boat is no accident, especially due to the fact that her estranged relatives would profit handsomely from their deaths. Changing her name to Becca Lynn she secures a position as a research assistant to writer, Max Duncan, on a practically deserted island in the middle of Lake Superior. Becca has not been to Windigo Manor since she was a small child, and is certain none of the remaining family members there will recognize her as she ferrets out information concerning her parents' death. Max Duncan is a handsome, brooding widower for whom Becca begins to feel a deep attraction in spite of herself. When eerie incidents begin to take place, Becca begins to wonder if she has been recognized. When someone frightens her in the woods dressed up as Windigo and her life becomes threatened, Becca unearths secrets she never wanted to find out. Someone wants her out of the way---permanently. And no one in Windigo Manor is to be trusted...including Max Duncan.
Colleen Coble wrote this riveting novel under her maiden name of Rhoads in 2005, and had it republished in 2015. Full of exotic descriptive imagery, the reader will feel as though they are on a tropical island in the Caribbean or Tahiti instead of the United States. Filled with heart racing excitement and melodramatic tension that will send shivers up your spine -- there is never a dull moment in this whodunit! Throw in some romance and a spiritual thread throughout and you have a typical Colleen Coble novel--breathtaking!
A book you don't want to put down for the first half. It is suspenseful and written in Colleen Coble's characteristic style. She has written much better books however, and this one just doesn't quite make the grade. The second half of the book becomes somewhat tedious to read. I could hardly wait for the end just to say I finished it.
Becca is convinced that the boating explosion that killed her parents a month ago was no accident. She sets off to Eagle Island in Lake Superior under the guise of a research assistant to author Max Duncan, so that she can find the murderer. She's counting on no-one recognising her as the granddaughter of the rich matriarch of the manor, since she hasn't been there since she was a child. However, her grandmother returns from overseas sooner than expected. Can she keep us the ruse? Can she trust her feelings for Max? And will someone kill her before she can flush out the murderer?
This is the first in Colleen Coble's Great Lakes Legends series. It had a lot of the right elements--a likable heroine, a brooding hero, a gothic setting. However, it didn't work as well on a number of levels for me. I've read a lot of Colleen Coble books and have enjoyed most of them. However, the suspense wasn't as gripping in this one, and I didn't feel the bit about the Windigo legend worked as well as it could. I also got a bit annoyed over the constantly changing feelings between Max and Becca - one minute in love, the next suspicious, then back in love, then suspicious. Perhaps the shorter length of this novel didn't allow for some elements to be fully developed.
However, I enjoyed it as a light read. I just didn't feel it was up to Coble's best.
(Spoilers) I found the book to be suspenseful, but I felt the windigo was more of a gimmick then part of the story. I also had a difficult time picturing Max. At first I thought he was an older gentleman, then it threw me for a loop when he was competing in the logging games. I was confused by Max & Becca kissing then no further mention of it like it never happened and then the second kiss was like another first kiss. I had a difficult time with the Max & Becca on and off again "relationship" and suspicion of each other to suddenly getting married (really?). Once he accepted Christ, I think we should have seen a change in their relationship (not just him sitting in a church pew). This was not my favorite Colleen Coble book, but overall I did like it (even though I guessed the ending by chapter 3).
What a disappointment this was. Recently, I've read two books by Colleen Coble that I really enjoyed, with this being my third book by her. I was so shocked at the difference in the quality of writing by this author. This story seemed more like a first draft that was never edited. It was full of typos, had an implausible plot, holes in the plot, unfinished plot lines, and wishy-washy MCs.
I read this story as part of a seven-book Christian Romantic Suspense anthology called Cold Case, Warm Hearts, published 04/22/25. Now I've figured out that it was first published in 2005, so I guess that explains it - her writing has improved tremendously. Lesson learned - from now on, I'll check to see when/if a book was published previously and proceed with caution.
This was a gothic wannabe; isolated island, large related cast of dysfunctional characters, brooding hero, innocent heroine. I had trouble believing all these people lived in this manor and acted like they needed to stay there all the time, in this day and age. Hero was hot and cold and then when he seems to accept heroine, he finds something out that point to her lying and immediately accepts the lie and accuses her. In a story with a faith base this showed him as weak at the drop of a hat. Don’t think I’ll look for the rest of the trilogy.
Suspenseful drama where the enemy lurks within the extended family. It will take all of Becky’s wits to figure out who killed her parents while trying to stay alive herself. I love the emphasis on living out her faith even while walking through challenges and be a witness to those she came in contact with
Short clean read. Not that suspenseful and I got extremely irritated at Becca and Max because of the stupid conclusions they jumped to. Will probably read the other books in the series and hopefully they get better.
This is a delightful book about family relationships with a nice touch of suspense. It was a very quick read for me and I intend to look for the following books. I highly recommend this book.
I can always count on an exciting, well-written book when Colleen Coble is the writer. Giving glory to God, suspense, and love.......what more could you ask for?!
I do like Coleen Coble's books. I have read most of them. I did not like how Max and Becca were too quick to judge people in the beginning. But the suspense was good.
Colleen Coble does it again with her great suspense in Windigo Twilight. It is #1 of Great Lakes Legacy. I'm anxious to start on #2. Becca goes to see a famous writer that she just so happens to have studied. She goes to the huge mansion on Lake Superior with all intentions of finding who murdered her parents fifteen years earlier. She had studied in college Max who needed an assistant to help him organize for a new book. She gave a false name, using Becca hoping her grandmother who had always called her Becky would not recognize her. But she calls her to have tea with her and they both cry on each other's shoulders. Sweet storyline but very suspenseful too. Nail biter last chapters.
I accidentally found Colleen Coble's books. However each one that I have read is hard to put down. She has such a way of drawing me in that I can't wait to see what is happening next. This is Godly romance. I finish one and start looking for the next. I have lost count of how many I have read. I have given some away to friends, hoping they will see her talent. Keep them coming Colleen!
A good read that is worth the time. Colleen Coble writes great mysteries mixed romance. I enjoyed this book almost as much as the other Colleen Coble books that I have read, but I only gave it 4 stars instead of 5 because I thought the ending to this book was not as much of an on-the-edge-of-your-seat ending as I have enjoyed in her other books.
Great read. Enjoyed every moment. Right when I think I know who the "bad guy" is, I was thrown in a different direction. Well written as usual. Wouldn't expect anything less from one of my favorite authors. A little romance, a lot of mystery with christian morals and values.
My Kindle prime loan for July. Last month I had gotten Stormcatcher, which was apparently #2 in this three book series, so being OCD, I had to go back and read the first one. Short and sweet. Apparently an older book of Colleen Coble's that has been re-released. Pretty good story, nothing outstanding. I'll try to get the last one from Prime next month, as well, and finish up the series.
A story that reveals the dark side of family and it's relationships as well as the good side. College Cobble is such a talented writer that you feel like part of the story.
I am looking forward to the next two books in this series.
