Activation #2

Second Activation

Rate this book
It began in First Activation, when military veterans Harry and Jack arrived at a silent JFK airport and a New York City full of madmen driven to kill one another.
In Second Activation, the two brothers escape from Monroe, Michigan, and head for New York to face down Genesis Alliance, a despotic organization that is implementing the chaos to create a new order. Caught in a race against time, confronted with a local team intent on revenge and expecting the imminent arrival of a larger reinforcement, Harry and Jack must avoid existing dangers, gain allies, and stop the Alliance from launching its next Activation.

With the fate of the remaining population at stake, Harry and Jack know that stopping the Activation means going to war once again.

First, there was the First Activation, which resulted in a world where everyone had one goal: a murder-suicide. The first part of the novel was survival horror as two brothers who escaped this fate try to stay alive amidst this crazy scenario. I really liked that part. After they stumble on some of the people who are behind it, it turns out to be more of a stop the bad guys kind of books. I was less a fan of that.

Unfortunately, Second activation was more of the latter. In every sense of the world. It was still very fast paced and certainly entertaining, but it also felt a bit repetitive. Also, everyone who was not one of the three main characters were dying like flies even though the main characters themselves obviously never get hurt. They are THAT good. The ending left room for another book, but I'm not sure there is one.

Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for providing me with a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review!

When I heard Second Activation was coming out... I was like:

 photo tumblr_m6bh8cxEfb1r3ovdbo1_250.gif

I immediately got sucked into the book (just like the First Activation) I couldn't stop reading.... while walking, while cooking... running into my dog's butt and burning my dinner....

Wow this story just keeps getting better! The plot is awesome, and there is a ton of action and the writing is superb!

I would give this ten stars if I could!

I was lucky enough to get a copy for review from the author... but I am going to buy the book when it gets released because my two sons read the first book and they keep asking me when the second one is released. This will make a great gift for them!

I think this book is just as good, if not better than the first book. TWO THUMBS UP!!!!

Publisher Description: In Second Activation, the two brothers escape from Monroe, Michigan, and head for New York to face down Genesis Alliance, a despotic organization that is implementing the chaos to create a new order. Review: This is a really good sequel that follows Harry and Jack as they seek to stop GA from being generally dodgy. What I really like about this series is not only the plausibility but the causal results of this disaster. People that survive build their own belief systems based on a lack of outside knowledge and are able to adjust as events unfold. The turns in this novel are many. Just when you think they have it planned and going in their direction. Bang! Disruptions and a change of plans on the fly.

A real solid second installment in this series.

This fast-action thriller moves directly on from where First Activation finished so you need to have read that for the story to make sense. It’s dystopia with knobs on and just as we think the brothers, Harry and Jack, are making progress, the rug is pulled, often very violently, from under them and they are back on their own. The story is dark, threatening and, for the reader, exciting, but I don’t want to give too much away. It’s one of those books in which things aren’t always what you think they are and you are amazed at the fortitude of people who have to make a way of life after the events in Book 1.

The writing is clear and punchy and if you love a thriller, especially one in a near-future setting, this series is for you. It would make a stunning film. I really look forward to seeing how they cope in the next book. I want to know what happens. I want, for some people at least, a happy ending.

I felt that first activation was a lot to live up to. I felt that the authors would struggle to replicate the pace of the novel in the second addition and still keep me interested but I was wrong. Second Activaion begins with a ferocious pace that never lets up. What is more impressive for me is that the authors manage to portray vividly a world that is beginning the advanced stage of decomposition in amongst all of the action. As well as this new characters are introduced and there are some cleaver uses of some iconic locations. The novel is in parts exciting, in parts thought provoking and in pats harrowing. A brilliant read and I suppose this leaves the next chapter in this series with a lot to live up to. Bring it on!

Super awesome follow-up to the first book! The characters and the depth to which they have been described and built up is so much fun. I really really hope there is a third book forth coming. The 2 brothers have had to deal with so much since arriving to NYC and their continued loss of new friends is adding up quickly, but even those characters have some very good build up before they are left aside.

This story is quite scary if it were true, but even more for me are the people who really think it is best to try and learn-up society in this way and then re-build with whomever is left-over.

I really am glad the authors did not dwell on the technology but continued to build on the human side of the issue. If you liked the first one, you will like this one just as much.

I was hoping this book will be as good as the first part, but I have to admit I was slightly disappointed. It's not as intensive and it's much slower, then the end is quite abrupt. I guess authors have a thing for killing their characters, though not the main ones. On the other hand, those two main characters might have survival skills, but they aren't very bright otherwise. This second book seemed bit too rushed and felt like sort of unwanted by the authors. I hoped for something more after 1st part.

I was very lucky to have won this book on Goodreads First Reads. I was shocked by how mesmerizing and immersing the plot line was! Very vivid details and heart-wrenching material. I couldn't put down the book when I had the time to read it. No matter what part of the story you were at, there was always going to be some action, even at the beginning. Beautiful story!

I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

The second installment of this series does not disappoint! Taking up right where the first in the series stopped, brothers Harry and Jack continue to wage war against the Genesis Alliance, a CIA operation to basically take control of the remaining population of the U.S.

Second activation

When is the follow-up book? I enjoyed this book immensely. Lots of English history involved. But. I need to know what is going to happen later.

OK, but not as good as Book 1, not impressed with ending.

Did not have a feeling of an ending. Are more sequels coming? Am a bit miffed that I read it. Not satisfying.

Post apocalyptic action

The pace is fast in this post apocalyptic action yarn. This genre typically has numerous far-fetched coincidences that pull the story together and this one is no exception. Several cliched characters grace the pages and honestly if it weren't for luck the heroes would've did in the first installment. Overall a fast fun read that is fairly true to the genre. The most unique aspect is the entire concept of the activations. While extremely unbelievable it still makes for an interesting story element and most of us aren't reading this genre for the science.

I'll say 2.5/5, but round up. The second volume felt rushed towards the end, as though they feared a third, concluding volume wouldn't materialize. We get some closure between the two books, but I do wonder if the brothers are biding their time on another sequel.

Also! This series has one of the highest secondary and tertiary bodycounts outside of a George RR Martin book. Good Lord.

Still, on the balance, entertaining...if uneven.

Not impressed.

Felt like I was reading the script for a TV series with the typical cliffhanger ending. So many inconsistencies and illogical thinking. I gave it a three because it had potential and the start of a good storyline. Reminded me of the TV series Revolution. I read the second book too only to see if the storyline improved, but alas, no.

Suspenseful

Good little series. Lots of ups and downs. Pretty suspenseful and kinda mysterious because of the zombie effect that the device had on people.

We return to our Manchester lads caught up in the plot of a shadowy organisation. If you have read the first one, you will know about the Thanos-y overtones the the plot.

Not a bad follow-up to the first activation book. A little short with some tedious dialogue, but reasonably enjoyable nonetheless.

"Second Activation" was published in 2015 (April) and was written by Darren (http://dampwearmouth.com/home/) and Marcus Wearmouth. This book is the second of their "Activation" series. Darren Wearmouth is the author or co-author of seven novels and Marcus Wearmouth shares two of those.

I obtained a galley of this novel for review through https://www.netgalley.com. I would categorize this novel as ‘R’ as there are instances of Violence and Mature Language. This Post-Apocalypse Thriller novel is set in the contemporary eastern United States and picks up immediately at the end of the first novel of the series "First Activation".

Brothers Harry and Jack confront one of the leaders of the Genisis Alliance and amazingly escape. They meet others who are not happy with what Genisis Alliance has been doing and find that another activation is scheduled within a few days to draw all survivors in for processing to essentially become the slave workers for the new order. Harry and Jack set out to prevent the second activation, but they encounter danger and death at every turn.
I spent a little less than 6 hours with this novel and found it to be about the same as the first. At this point most of the 'killers' are gone and the opposition comes mostly from the Genisis Alliance. The plot was OK and really this is just the second half of the story begun in the first novel. I give this novel a 3 out of 5.

I think this one an improvement on the first book (don't bother if you haven't read the first one though), it had much more direction and didn't follow the usual survival book standards.
If you're looking for clever twists and turns, they're not really there. It's just a good, old fashioned action novel, where you can see things coming a mile off but the pace is non-relenting and no punches are pulled.
I understand 'final activation' is due within the next couple of months and I'm looking forward to the conclusion.

Bought this because I got the first book free and thought that the authors deserved a little bit of money for their effort, but wish I hadn't bothered reading it. A complete retread of the first book covering the same locations, same "meet-new-character-use-and-kill-off" plot device, same bland protagonists, etc.
Not worth the time.
