“She didn’t know who was targeting her. But the danger she was in… It was deadly. And unrelenting.”

Forensic mechanic Helena Rutherford (what a cool job is that for a heroine??), officer Trevor Slate, and his arson K-9 partner Lark can’t seem to catch a break on the serial killer arsonist case they’ve been investigating. And then Helena’s home is set on fire – with her inside – and her long-missing best friend’s bones are found in the rubble, and we’ve got ourselves a riveting suspense plot with multiple layers to keep us glued to the pages. Not only are they trying to figure out who the arsonist is before he murders any more young women, now they also have to solve this newly-hot cold case (with some deep personal stakes for them both) and determine if whoever is trying to kill Helena is responsible for the current murders or the old one… or if it’s the same person. On top of that, Helena is still grieving the recent, tragic loss of her father and Trevor is grieving his mother’s worsening health. All while Trevor is also part of a task force trying to take down a deadly illegal adoption ring. (This is the continuity arc for the whole multi-author series and, even though I haven’t read any of the other novels yet, I felt like I had all the info I needed to follow that subplot in this book.)

“Grief’s not a clean break. It’s more like… layers. You peel them back, bit by bit, and some days you find a fresh wound where you thought a scar had formed.”

Needless to say, there are some emotionally-rich threads to explore in Hunting for an Arsonist, and Jessica R. Patch – as usual – does a wonderful job of tying them all together in both meaningful and surprising ways. Besides the plot full of twists and turns (several of which I was not expecting), I also really appreciated this story’s honest and relatable approach to grief – just the right amount of attention to it, always framed with warmth and understanding. I loved the friendship and easy relationship that Trevor and Helena already have when the story begins, something which also adds depth to the romantic feelings simmering between them and helps the move from friends to ‘in love’ make sense. Lark is an awesome K-9 partner too, and I enjoyed getting to watch her work as an arson detection specialist, which we don’t see represented in fictional K-9s nearly as often as something like search-and-rescue or bomb detection.

Bottom Line: Hunting an Arsonist by Jessica R. Patch steadily turns up the heat (pun absolutely intended) as buried secrets collide with present-day danger, all while giving the characters room to process the very personal losses they’re carrying. I loved the investigative details, the faith thread, and the natural progression of Helena and Trevor’s relationship from colleagues and friends to something decidedly more romantic. Throw in Lark being her brilliant K-9 self, representing arson detection dogs so well, plus the twisty cases that kept surprising me, and I was one very happy reader. I particularly enjoyed trying to determine which pieces belonged to which puzzle, albeit discovering I hadn’t arranged them nearly as correctly as I’d thought. Suspenseful, heartfelt, and ultimately full of hope, Hunting an Arsonist would be a great next read for fans of Dana Mentink, Jodie Bailey, and Sharee Stover!

There’s suspense and then there’s Jessica R Patch’s brand of suspense which is on a whole other level of compelling! The way she uses words and phrases like weapons, delivering clipped descriptive sentences at a calculated pace. Ups the tension ten fold and I found myself gasping for breath right along with Trevor and Helena!

Unputdownable. Enthralling. Captivating. And every other descriptor you can think of. Oh and the way Patch describes fire! In a word – terrifying! It’s no wonder her arson investigator hero has a fear of fire with her writing him into scenes like that!

A wonderful blend of romance and suspense with plenty of ‘aha’ moments along the way. And the author did a great job of including the over-arcing series suspense elements in such a way that newbies to this continuity series would have no problem diving in here.

A stunning read…or, in my case, listen. Narrator Lisa Larsen did a great job of delivering all the tension and drama and did justice to Patch’s exhilarating pacing.

This is a Romantic Suspense, and this is the sixth book in the Colorado K-9 Unit series. I have read some of the other books in this series before picking up this book. I read this book by listening to the audiobook, and I liked the audiobook. There was a lot of suspense, and there was too much craziness going on. At the beginning I did not know what was going on at first. I did enjoy the ending, but I felt it was over done. I received an ARC of this book. This review is my own honest opinion about the book like all my reviews are.

Thank you to Jessica R. Patch and the publisher for the ARC copy!
Jessica R. Patch has become one of those authors I don’t even have to think twice about picking up. She always keeps me guessing, and Hunting an Arsonist was no exception! I flew through this book in just two days and even stayed up way too late to finish it.
I loved Trevor, Helena, and of course Lark. The suspense kept me turning the pages, the romance never overshadowed the story, and the faith thread was woven in so naturally.
If you enjoy clean romantic suspense that keeps you guessing until the very end, definitely add this one to your TBR!

Jessica R. Patch never disappoints! This book takes you on an intense, suspense filled journey trying to unravel several mysteries at once. Numerous twists that keep you guessing where the danger is coming from captivates you from beginning to end. It is an excellent read filled with great characters, suspense, emotion, and romance!

I was very intrigued with Helena and her occupation as a forensic mechanic. Both her strong and sensitive sides were perfectly written enduring her to the reader. This is the first book I have read with a female character in that particular career and I found it to be both fascinating and impressive.

While this book is part of a series, it can be read as a standalone. I highly recommend this book.

I was given a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions expressed are completely my own.

Hunting an Arsonist introduces us to Helena Rutherford, a Forensic Mechanic. She has been working with a team tracking a dangerous serial arsonist whose terrifying MO involves locking young women inside vehicles before setting them ablaze. The case becomes deeply personal when the "Fire Starter" targets Helena herself, trapping her inside her own home as it burns. Officer Trevor Slate and his highly trained arson-detection K-9 partner, Lark, arrive at the scene just in time to rescue Helena. As the house is being examined in a post-fire forensic investigation, human remains are found in the crawl space. Testing shows that it is Helena's childhood BFF, who vanished years ago. Trevor, Lark and Helena join forces in an investigation to find the arsonist and see if they are connected to the cold case of Helena's missing friend. With Helena being hunted, they deal with being shot at, truck failure, and more fires. Will they find the arsonist before Helena becomes the next victim?

This is romantic suspense, mystery, and K-9 procedural all rolled into one. I didn't realize there was a job of a Forensic Mechanic, but it makes sense they would want someone to work with police when vehicles are involved in crimes. Along with that job, Lark's role of K-9 arson-detection specialist is another position I was not aware of. Both Trevor and Helena has trauma and tragedy in their pasts, and Trevor was full of guilt because of what happened. I enjoyed the investigative details and the natural progression of Helena and Trevor's relationship from colleagues and friends to something more romantic. I did figure out who the arsonist was early in the story and was surprised that my guess was correct. As the case progressed, there is also a baby ring that comes into play. There is a lot going on, with plenty of action and likeable characters. I listened to the audiobook narrated by Lisa Larsen. She did a great job of delivering all the tension and drama in the story with perfect pacing and great voices. If you enjoy a faith based story, with K-9 characters, a good mystery and fast pace, then I recommend Hunting an Arsonist in whatever format you prefer.

Secrets and lies

Helena, Trevor and Lark are getting closer to finding the aronsist targeting young women, but their investigation takes a number of unexpected turns when Helena is targeted, not just once, but numerous times. Fires, shots, sabotage, crumbling cliffs, car accident..... it's relentless but is it the arsonist trying to stop the investigation or a murderer trying to keep his secrets buried?
Dark, dangerous and increasingly complex, their investigation has them questioning not only everything they thought they knew, but also if people are/were who they seemed to be. Not only is the investigation difficult but Helena and Trevor are both struggling with loss and grief, they finally leave you happy but emotionally exhausted as they solve the current case, a cold case and a murder thought to be an accident, plus they get their HEA. An awesome case, but they make little leeway with the baby ring investigation, hopefully we will have more in this in the next book. I listened to this on Audible.

I'm generally not a fan of K-9 books but I can't resist a Jessica Patch book! My favorite part of Jessica's books is how she immediately drops the reader in the middle of the action or mystery. If you're not a fan of slow starts then you have nothing to fear here. You are sucked in so fast you just have to know what happens next.

My favorite part of this book is the details on training responses of the dogs and how dialed in the queued in the trainers are to understanding them. It's a powerful relationship and Jessica describes it so well.

I know when I read a story by Ms. Patch, it will take me on a roller coaster with unexpected twists and turns. This story does exactly that. It starts with a bang and maintains suspense throughout. Helena Rutherford is a forensic mechanic, which I found fascinating, and is investigating a serial arsonist who kills young women. Officer Trevor Slate and his dog Lark rescue Helena from her burning house. He helps with her investigation while trying to keep her safe, helps investigate the discovery of her friend's bones found in her house because of the fire, and continues with another investigation he is involved with. Both continue their investigations despite everything that is happening. There are some unexpected incidents in the story that took me by surprise. This one is a nail-biter. I voluntarily read an advance copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

The multi-author Colorado K-9 Unit series continues to captivate and uplift with this hard-to-put-down read! There is a lot going on in this fast-paced, high intensity romantic suspense story that grabbed me from the beginning and held on tight to the end. The suspense is tripled by a devastating cold case murder, a serial arsonist who targets young women, and an illegal adoption ring. The adoption case is an ongoing one that binds all the stories in the series together, but most of the plot revolves around the other two cases. With highly personal and emotional stakes, forensic mechanic Helena Rutherford and Officer Trevor Slate must work together alongside Trevor's reliable K-9 partner Lark to uncover how the active arson case connects to the cold case murder before Helena becomes the killer's next casualty. Trevor and Helena are a precious couple, and I love the way Ms. Patch makes Lark a crucial character in the story. I appreciate how the themes of hope, resilience, and faith are woven naturally into the story amid a budding romance. I enjoyed this book and highly recommend it.

Jessica Patch is a must-read author for me. I really enjoyed this Love Inspired Suspense book that is part of the Colorado K-9 Unit series. The action is fast-paced and the suspense is top-notch. Everybody is a suspect! I felt the tension on every page – a sign of a great whodunit! Patch weaves suspense, romance, and faith seamlessly into this amazing page-turner. The main female character, Helena, is a forensic mechanic. I loved the uniqueness of her occupation.

I have not read the previous books in this series and although there is a mystery that spans the entire series, I was able to understand and enjoy this book as a stand-alone. The arson case is fully described and solved in this book. Don’t let the fact that it is part of a series stop you from reading.

I was given an ARC of this book which I voluntarily reviewed. I was not required to post a positive review. All opinions are my own.

Jessica R. Patch never disappoints! I feel very honored to be able to read this advanced copy!

This was a heartwarming and suspenseful story. The characters Helena and Trevor struggled with guilt and self-acceptance, but were able to stuff those feelings inside while working together to find an arsonist and killer. Throughout the story they both learned to accept God’s love and forgiveness.

Jessica’s ability to keep readers on the edge of their seat throughout the story amazes me! Every time I thought they were closing in, something else happened and I couldn’t stop reading!

I definitely recommend reading this book, whether or not you have read other books in the Colorado K-9 series. It will not disappoint!

"Hunting an Arsonist" is a Christian romantic suspense. When he was a young teenager, Trevor's mother ran into a burning home in an attempt to rescue his sister. His mother ended up with debilitating COPD. As penance for not running in himself, he's dedicated his life to caring for her and works with an arson detection K9 to solve arsons. Helena feels like no one could love her because she loves working as a forensic mechanic and isn't traditionally 'girly.' She and Trevor worked on three cases: the ongoing series mystery of the kidnapped pregnant girls, the serial killer arsonist case they had been working on, and the cold case of Helena's missing best friend.

Helena and Trevor actively investigated the cases, uncovering clues using their skills and interviewing suspects. They sifted through the evidence until they discovered the truth. The suspense came from the attacks on Helena and other women. The main characters were engaging and reacted realistically to events. Trevor didn't believe he deserved a loving relationship or life outside of caring for his mother, so he struggled to embrace a relationship with Helena even though he admired and cared for her. Helena had trouble believing he genuinely cared for her, especially as he gave mixed signals. They had to work through these hurts to find love.

Trevor believed that his mother would go to heaven, and both Trevor and Helena believed in God. There was no sex or bad language. Overall, I'd recommend this enjoyable suspense novel.

The narrator of the audiobook got into the story, reading the story in a dramatic way. She did a good job of saying the text in a way consistent with the text (with surprise if surprised, etc.) and it was easy to follow who was talking and what was going on.

I received a free audiobook review copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley.

In this Christian suspense romance, we are back in Colorado where two crimes are being investigated simultaneously. One in which young pregnant women have disappeared , later to be found dead and no baby in sight. Except for one who is still missing and law enforcement continues to diligently search for her.
The other crime is a serial arsonist who is likely connected to the previous crime. When the house of forensic mechanic Helena Rutherford is torched while she was sleeping, she’s saved by K-9 Officer Trevor Slate and his dog Lark.
What surprises everyone are the bones found in the house. Those of Helena’s best friend who disappeared years ago and whose case was never solved.
All bringing doubts to Helena’s father, the former fire chief . Was her dad involved not only in the disappearance but also in the arson?
This action packed story takes the listeners on a rollercoaster ride of whodunit as feelings are developing between them . But family issues, and doubts must first be taken care of.
Aside from the plot, this story was thought provoking. As the author reminds us, sometimes it takes many twists and turns, and experiencing grief in our lives to find where we truly belong as we find our path in life.
I was entrusted a copy of this audiobook by Netgalley, Harlequin Audio and HarperCollings.
The narrator, Lisa Larsen brought the story to life.

First, this book is part of a series, but there wasn't a lot of mention of all the other characters, so I didn't feel like i missed anything.
The book starts with Helena Rutherford, a forensic mechanic who is mourning the recent death of her father, while investigating a series of murders that involve arson. Her home is set on fire, and she is rescued by Officer Trevor Slate and his K-9 partner, Lark. After the fire is out, bones are found under the foundation of the home; the bones are her childhood friend who disappeared one night during a sleepover.
Together, Helena and Trevor try to solve who is murdering young women by setting their cars on fire with the women in them, while Trevor tries to stop an adoption ring; pregnant women are being kidnapped and murdered as soon as the baby is born.
There is a light romance story and a soft Christian theme, very enjoyable and appropriate for the story.
The one thing that I struggled with - there was SO much happening, including a sniper shooting at them at several different locations - and they are on their own? No one is with them, no extra cops around to protect them? The story doesn't lack action; there is a lot going on, including other K-9 officers working together to find a missing pregnant woman.
I did enjoy this book. Helena and Trevor are likeable characters, and the dog, Lark, is adorable.
I will look for more books by Jessica R. Patch, and Lisa Larson did an excellent job as narrator.

I couldn't stop listening! As usual, Jessica R. Patch did NOT disappoint! This story had me asking SO many questions and trying to piece together all the clues right alongside Helena and Trevor.

Were the fires and the murders connected? Were the culprits working together or protecting each other? Who wanted Helena dead, and WHY? The cases she'd been working on had stalled, so what did someone think she knew? Was it even connected to the cases she was helping with? The more information Helena and Trevor uncovered, the more possibilities there were, and I was constantly second-guessing myself. I thought I had figured out what was going on with a certain character (I'm not naming names because I don't want to spoil anything!), but I kept changing my mind. And that ending?! I was SHOCKED!

I had to look up what a forensic mechanic was because that was a new occupation for me! I love when a book teaches me something along the way. And can we talk about Lark?! What an amazing K-9 partner! Loyal, smart, and exactly the kind of partner anyone would be lucky to have.

The suspense, the twists, the unanswered questions, and the way everything kept me guessing made this such a gripping listen. If you're a fan of romantic suspense with plenty of mystery, danger, and surprises, this one is definitely worth adding to your list!

I love all of Jessica R Patch’s books, she is an automatic-purchase author for me. I can recognize excellent writing and will give kudos when due, but despite the 4⭐️ rating I’m giving this book, it was more of a 3⭐️ for me BECAUSE I READ IT AT THE WRONG TIME IN MY LIFE. I truly believe if I read this even 6 or 8 months from now, this could be another 5⭐️ Patch thriller for me.

I feel like this is a very good representation of grief and dealing with the emotions that can come at the end of a parent’s life. I lost my mom not too long ago so this was very difficult for me to get through. HOWEVER, the story is very well done. The characters are well written and realistic. The twists keep coming and they come from out of nowhere. I loved the friendship they built and the romance that came from it was so sweet.

I have not read the other books in the Colorado K9 Unit and I don’t feel like I was missing too much, so don’t let the number 6 in the series stop you from picking this one up. I will be going back and starting at the beginning of the series.

Thanks to the author, Jessica R Patch, for an Advanced Reader’s Copy in exchange for my honest review. These opinions are strictly my own.

While I haven't had the chance to read every book in this wonderful Colorado K-9 series, I most certainly will go back and grab the ones that I don't have. I love how that each book has it's own story while it also has a story thread continuing throughout the series about a baby smuggling ring. This story is about Helena who has just lost her Dad and is still actively working on the arson cases that is happening in her little town of Lavender. Don't you just love that name, I do. When Helena's home catches on fire, Trevor Slate barely gets her out in time. Who is starting all these fires and why? Is it the same one who seems very determined to kill Helena and Trevor? These sentences alludes to what the whole book is like "She didn't know who was targeting her. But the danger she was in...It was deadly. And unrelenting." I loved the fast pace of the book that kept me guessing all the way through, but there was a part of the story that made me tear up. I received a complimentary copy of this book, but was not required to leave a positive review. All opinions are what I thought of the story. I can't wait for the other books to find out about the baby smuggling ring.

A forensic mechanic is a new for one for me, which is what mechanic Helena Rutherford does as she assists in a serial arson investigation. This was an interesting concept for me, and I was thoroughly impressed. She apparently has painted a target on her back which is evident when her own home is set ablaze. Thankfully, Officer Trevor Slate, and his K-9, Lark, are able to save her.

This was not just one mystery. There were several things going on at one time, which kept this reader on her toes. There were a lot of crazy reveals that left me shaking my head. This author will string you along thinking you know everything and then she will fool you.

The faith thread is present, but not overpowering. The message is clear. I also like that the romance is part of the story, but not the most integral part of it. The characters were easy to like and the action was non-stop. Fire is a scary thing, and using it as a weapon is even scarier. If you enjoy a good story with a fantastic mystery, this one will be perfect for you.

Thank you to the author for this ARC. I am leaving this review voluntarily.

This is an intense story full of suspense that never lets up. Jessica Patch has such a talent for turning out these kinds of stories and I was once again riveted to the pages to find out what would happen next.

One of my favorite things about this one is that the female lead is a forensic mechanic. I read a lot of suspense and this is the first time I have read about this occupation. I was fascinated by what she does and this made this story so unique. I learned so much about what a forensic mechanic does and this just made the female lead so much cooler in my opinion.

I'm a huge dog lover so I just loved Lark's role in this story as well. Helena, Trevor and Lark make a wonderful team for investigating the arsonist who needs to be stopped before he hurts any more women. And why is Helena a target all of a sudden? That makes for an interesting twist trying to uncover the why behind the attacks.

I love how intricate these stories are from this author. There are always multiple layers and just when you think you have it all figured out there is another twist coming your way! Highly recommend this one to suspense fans.

Jessica R. Patch has done it again! Hunting an Arsonist had everything I’ve come to expect from her books—suspense, danger, great characters, and just enough romance woven in without taking away from the mystery.

I was hooked trying to figure out how everything connected, and every time I thought I had a handle on where the story was going, another piece was revealed that had me questioning my theory. The arson investigation made for such an interesting storyline, and I loved the tension and urgency that carried throughout the book.

One of my favorite things about Jessica R. Patch’s writing is how easy it is to become invested in her characters. They feel real, their relationships have depth, and the suspense actually keeps you guessing instead of giving everything away halfway through.

Hunting an Arsonist was fast-paced, twisty, emotional, and another fantastic read from one of my favorite authors. If you enjoy romantic suspense with an intriguing investigation and plenty of “okay, ONE more chapter” moments, definitely add this one to your list!

Hunting an Arsonist is a solid story with good writing. Helena and Trevor are interesting characters, especially Trevor who is somehow an arson investigator in a small town but also working on a statewide task force for an illegal adoption ring/murder. Helena and Trevor have a respectful, believable partnership.

For me, the mystery starts promising but eventually misses the mark. It's lacking, and the suspense is absent. It’s one of those stories that seem written for those more interested in the suspense aesthetic and one where the characters have to act dumb/oblivious to make the “mystery” work.

It’s egregious in this case because Helena is required to practically abandon everything she knows almost immediately. I also kind of side eye a decision Trevor makes that is wild just to be a hero, undercutting part of his whole conundrum with his mother no matter how the narrative tries to spin it into the right choice. The saving grace is Lark the dog, but he isn’t the only officer in the canine unit. All in all an enjoyable if somewhat annoying and ultimately forgettable way to pass the time

Action packed Christian adventure romance!

Helena is helping investigate a series of arson homicides, working alongside Trevor and his arson detection dog Lark. But then her house is set on fire while she is in it. Fortunately, Trevor was out on a run and rescues Helena. But someone keeps going after her. So she and Trevor have to figure out what is going on, while Trevor keeps working on the kidnapped mothers and babies case. Can they make any headway in either one when they are constantly under attack? Read this to find out!

The pace is breakneck and the tone is uncertain yet hopeful with an action and character oriented storyline that has some kisses only. The characters are vivid and engaging, including Lark. The Christian ideals are woven into the story. There are many twists and turns in this story that keep you guessing until the very end! Read this series in order to truly get the whole picture.

I was fortunate to receive an advanced copy of Hunting an Arsonist.
As always, Jessica has so many twists in her stories. This starts out with Helena investigating an arsonist, and then her own house is set on fire. But, there’s more to this fire than just the house burning.
Trevor and his K-9, Lark, join in on the investigation. So many times, I thought I figured out who the arsonist was in the story. But, as usual, more things happened and I would change my mind as to who the arsonist was in the story. They were convinced they had solved the mystery of the arsonist. But…. Jessica throws in more twists and then you have to wonder who really started the fires?
I like how Jessica always has a message about our faith in her stories. We always have hope even when our circumstances seem hard. Trevor and Helena showed hope even though they were going through a very difficult time.
Jessica is one of my favorite authors. Thank you again for letting me read your latest book early.
Make sure you read her latest when it is released Tuesday.

Jessica R. Patch is a master of twists and misdirections and Huntington an arsonist will give you both.

Helena Rutherford is a forensic mechanic trying to pick up the pieces after the death of her dad. When an arsonist strikes her house a long cold mystery is brought back to light.

Trevor Slate works for the Lavender Police Department along with his arson detection dog, Lark. He is also working on a task force to put an end to a baby smuggling ring.

After the fire at Helena’s house, Trevor makes keeping her safe a top priority. Helena faces possibilities that she could never have imagined while Trevor comes to grips with a major life change. Through it all they need to decide if the feelings growing between them will be allowed to take root.

I highly recommend this well written and intriguing book.

Hunting an Arsonist by Jessica R. Patch the next installment of the Colorado K-9 Unit. Jessica had my heart at the dedication.

I have never read a Jessica R. Patch book that I haven't loved, but Hunting as Arsonist the next installment in the Colorado K-9 Unit may have just moved to the top of all my favorite K-9 stories by Jessica.

This fast-paced, faith-based, action-packed story is filled with great characters, and heart pounding action.

I loved that we had a lot going on with a cold case, an arsonist and a baby ring, each kept my full attention.

I laughed, I cried, I held my breath, and celebrated. I also blamed everyone at least one time, but was left guessing until the end.

Five Stars is not enough for this book.

I would so highly recommend this story.

Don't forget the tissues.

Helena Rutherford is investigating a string of fires, when she becomes a target. K-9 officer Trevor Slate and his dog Lark comes her rescue, together they team up to find answers before it all goes up in flames.

An intense read, with two mysteries that have them racing for answers. I liked how Trevor comes beside Helena to help her out, and is supportive of her throughout, as they come to trust and depend on each other. I liked that they also bonded over their pasts and shared faith.

An engaging story with well developed characters. Plenty of action, good interaction and a clever dog. This story is more intense, and tad more dark than other Love Inspired Suspenses. It kept on my toes for sure! A twisting thriller with great characters and a dramatic climactic ending!

I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
