Magic Potion Mystery #3

Ghost of a Potion

Rate this book
It’s Halloween in Hitching Post, Alabama, and potion shop owner Carly Bell Hartwell has an especially spooky customer to handle…

With all the ghosts that haunt her at this time of year, Carly doesn’t exactly rush to celebrate Halloween.  Even a costume ball organized by her boyfriend Dylan's mother, Patricia Davis Jackson, holds little allure.  But to please Dylan, who wants peace between the two women, Carly reluctantly agrees to go.

Gossip around town is that architect Haywood Dodd plans to make a big announcement at the party. But before he can address the crowd, he’s found dead with Patricia standing over him, holding the murder weapon. Anxious to clear Patricia’s name and perhaps broker a truce with her, Carly would love to use her snooping skills to find the real killer. Only she has bigger problems to deal with—ghosts are flocking to her for help, including a very persistent Haywood Dodd…

Opening a Heather Blake book is like opening a box of your favorite chocolates. You know it's going to be amazing, but it is still filled with pleasant surprises!

I really adore Heather Blake's writing. I do not think I know how to express how much. Looking back, I am so glad my curiosity drove me to pick up one of her books and dive into the world of magic and mayhem. The writing, so original, so fresh and exciting. From the very moment I open a Heather Blake book, I find it almost impossible to put it down. The characters have become so beloved, so familiar as they continue to grow on me as the series continues.

Hitching Post, Alabama is a fun place with characters so full of heart, so real and flawed that it makes them almost believable. I cannot help but to think of them as some sort of neighbors each time a new book comes out and I cannot wait to see what kind of trouble Carly will get into next.

In this one, Carly plans to avoid the day the ghosts come out to play. Due to some bad experience with helping ghosts in the past, she would much rather sit at home and hibernate until they are all gone. Imagine to her surprise that the murder that happens during a Harpie's party brings the ghost of Haywood a little early to the party and Carly is stuck helping him out. The story was wonderful, so full of emotion, lots of secrets. Moments that made me laugh, made me cry and made me even more attached to the characters in the end.

Carly gets involved in investigating the murder not only to help the poor man cross over, but also because Dylan's mother is being charged with murder. In light of trying to make nice with her boyfriends mother, who seems to have a thing against Carly, she finds herself trying to clear Patricia's name which proves to be difficult especially when why Patricia is out against Carly reveals itself.

All I can say is that there better be another book, especially with that big revelation in the end that had me literally at the edge of my seat.

The mystery was fun and exciting. I loved how close Carly has become with her cousin. I loved the two other ghosts that Carly and Delia end up trying to help, so full of emotion. Of course it kept me guessing until the very end, but I loved how the puzzle pieces always come together in the end. I adore Carly and hope to see more of her so very soon!

If you have not yet picked up a Heather Blake book, I strongly suggest you give her a shot. Especially if you love a good cozy mystery with great characters mixed with a bit of paranormal mayhem!

I got a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange of an honest review.

New Adventure

Where: Hitching Post, Alabama

Who: Carly Bell

I arrived in Hitching Post...my first visit here... in time to meet Carly Bell, get a tour of Carly’s potion shop, and try on my dress for the costume ball. The ball is being held as a celebration for the completion of the Ezekiel Mansion restoration by the Harpies (The Hitching Post Restoration and Preservation Society).

A ball that white witch and empath Carly Bell is not exactly thrilled about attending for several reasons. As an empath it is dangerous to be out on Halloween, and a night with the Harpies is not exactly her cup of tea. Especially if it means being around Patricia Davis Jackson, a prominent member of the Harpies, the mother of her boyfriend, and her sworn enemy. Seriously Carly told me a story where she once stabbed Patricia in the butt with a pitchfork...lol. Anyways Carly knows she has to go to support her father who is trying to become a reluctant member of the Harpies. This is really something her mother wants...as Carly bell’s father is driving her batty. While preparing for the ball, and getting acquainted with the town gossip….Delia Carly’s cousin and black magic witch swoops into the store. She is dropping off Carly’s costume, and a warning. Delia has dreams...dreams that usually are accurate, and this dream is a doozy. Patricia Davis Jackson at the costume ball standing over a body with a candlestick in her hand. In the dream she couldn’t see who the victim was...only the time the murder takes place. As much as Carly would love a mugshot of Patricia Davis Jackson for her Christmas cards, and permanent collection….she doesn’t want to see her go to prison. Afterall that would put a damper on her relationship with Patricia’s son. Just like clockwork the dream plays out and Carly must put aside her difference with Patricia to make sure justice is really served...all while helping some ghosts find their way to the otherside along the way….

My thoughts:

I loved, loved, loved this book. I have never read any of the other books in the series, but that will soon change!! The characters were great...quirky, funny, and lovably southern! I enjoyed the setting of Hitchingpost...having a thing for small southern towns. The writing was fast-paced, witty, and laugh out loud funny. The mystery was enjoyable...I just loved everything about this book.

I highly recommend you check out this series...it's a witchingly good time!!

I will start by saying that I am a fan of Heather Blake and any new release automatically goes on my to be read pile. This series is no exception. Ghost of a Potion is the third book in the Magic Potion Mysteries and Ms. Blake has written a charming addition to the series. By now, the cast of characters are like old friends so it is always nice to stop in for a visit. In the Magic Potion Mysteries, the main character Carly Bell Hartwell, is a white witch and empath, who runs her families potion shop in a small town in Alabama. Although this installment is set during Halloween, this series is welcome entertainment anytime of the year.

The author does a wonderful job creating a cast of witty, fun characters that will enchant you from the start. She writes this story will humor and emotion that will make you laugh out loud and become more attached to the characters. Add to that a plot filled with mystery and some mayhem; throw in witches, ghost, and Carly's crazy family and you have the perfect blend for a wonderful story. Ms. Blake never disappoints and I never hesitate to pick up the latest copy of one of her books. Reading a story written by this author is like going home and catching up with old friends. I have to say this was a great visit and I can't wait for the next installment. Do your self a favor, if you haven't tried a book by this author pick up a book in one of her series and you will become a fan. If you are already a fan like me----definitely put this on your to be read pile. You won't be disappointed.

I would rate this book 4.5 stars.

Disclosure: I was provided a copy of this book by the author for a fair and honest review.

This is a new series for me and it is one that i definitely will be continuing. Carly is haunted by ghosts every Halloween, so its no surprise she plans on staying home to avoid them. But when a murder occurs at a costume ball organized by her boyfriend mother, the murder victims ghost follows Carly home. To help the ghost crossover, Carly looks for the killer. I love the characters. They are fun and quirky and just wonderful. I liked the twist st the end and can't wait to read more.

A great addition to the series. Unfortunately, it looks like it was the third and last, which is a downer. I really liked the main characters and story lines of this paranormal cozy series. It's been five years since Ghost of a Potion came out so I'm kinda not hopeful for more. But, maybe...?

This was my favourite of the three in the series, unfortunately, to date, this is the last one. I am just getting to know the characters and am sad that this is the end for now. Hoping Ms. Blake will publish one soon, but it's been three years since the last one, so....
A great storyline, lots of characters to keep track of, and set during Halloween season...perfect for a ghost-filled read.

Author Heather Blake has penned another enchanting installment of the Magic Potion Mystery series. Rather you’re a returning fan or new to this series, you are going to be captivated.

I’m not a big fan on stories with witches, but with more and more coming out in the para-cozy genre, I have been finding series that I enjoy. Reading GHOST OF A POTION, I found myself absorbed in the story. It was a perfect blending of murder mystery, humor, witches and ghosts. The fact that the story is set during Halloween made it that much more entertaining.

So wonderful is the author’s writing, as I read, I could hear the characters rich Alabama accents. I could see the small town of Hitching Post and felt I was walking along its streets. I was so absorbed in the story, that before I knew it, I had reached its exciting conclusion.

Add this magical mystery to your TBR. You’re going to be happy you did!

I read the first two books in this series quite awhile back, and was happy to run across this one.

It was a good one!

The saddest thing is that this was the third and last of the series. =( Good thing there are other reads out there by the author.

I have read and loved all of Heather Blake's books. She just amazes me with each and every book she writes. I enjoy all the locations and characters that her books provide. This one had me from the first chapter.
The small town of Hitching Post, Alabama is a wonderful town that anyone could call home. The characters living in this small town are so real and fun they feel like they could be your neighbors.
This book starts out with Carly trying to go into hiding because of Halloween and All Saints Day until the day after at midnight. She knows if she comes across a ghost between now and then she has to help he or she cross over or they will be stuck in their graves till the next year. Of course Carly's mama is having no part of this and wants her to go to the Harpie's party at Ezechial Mansion to support her father's bid to get into the elusive Harpie's. So we all know Carly and she ends up going with Dylan. She never wants to disappoint her mama not that her mama would ever let her.LOL Little does anyone at this party know that it will end in murder. Haywood is the victim and unfortunately for Carly the ghost that she has to help. Who would want to kill Haywood???
To really put a cramp in her hibernating plan Patricia is standing over Haywood with the murder weapon in her hand. Let's just say that there are a lot of emotions that fly when you have Carly and Patricia in the same geographical area. Yikes! So not only does Carly have to help poor Haywood she has to help Patricia because she is under arrest. Talk about a hot situation.
I loved all the mystery and different revelations that occurred in this book. I couldn't put it down because of all the twists and turns and secrets that were flying around town. I am telling you that you will not see them coming and will enjoy the magical adventure that only Heather Blake can write.

This series is starting to run neck & neck with Ms. Blake/Webber's Wishcraft series for me! I really like Carly and her cousin, Delia, is getting better with each book. Interesting all the secrets you'll find in a small town. I really enjoyed the stuff with the ghosts in this one and hope there's another in this series that takes place at Halloween sometime. This was a well-plotted mystery and the change in some relationships this time was most welcome. Looking forward to the next one! RECOMMEND!

Ghost of a Potion by Heather Blake is the third book in A Magic Potion Mystery series. Carly Bell Hartwell is getting ready for her yearly hibernation (starts at midnight on Halloween and ends at 11:49 p.m. on All Souls Day). Halloween starts the next day and Carly stays inside her home to avoid ghosts (the ones that have not passed over). Carly had experienced a bad ghost seven years previously and has not been able to deal with them since then. That evening Carly is attending an event at the Ezekiel Mansion (they will own the house if the lost heir does not claim it by January 1). It was just restored by the Harpies—The Hitching Post Restoration and Preservation Society (what did you think I meant). Carly’s mother is trying to get her husband into the society (to keep him busy and out of her hair). Carly will be attending with her on-again-off again (currently on) boyfriend, Dylan Jackson (who is also an officer with the Hitching Post Police Department).

The evening does not start out well. Patricia Davis Jackson, Dylan’s mother, does not like Carly and hits Carly with a few zingers as a greeting (and tries to ruin her beautiful dress). A little while later they hear screaming. Patricia is standing over Haywood Dodd with a candlestick in her hand. Haywood is dead. Haywood was going to make a big announcement at 10 p.m. and he would not give anyone a hint. Patricia, of course, is the main suspect which means Dylan is not allowed to investigate the case. As for Carly, she saw the one thing she wanted to avoid—a ghost! Haywood Dodd’s ghost noticed Carly and followed her home (she ran the whole way). Carly has no choice but to help Haywood. Carly sets out to solve the murder with help from Dylan (and friends). It looks like Carly is not going to get to hibernate this year. She might even pick up a few more ghosts along the way that she will have to assist (much to her Cousin Delia’s delight).

Who wanted Haywood Dodd dead? What was Haywood’s big announcement and did it have anything to do with his death? You will just have to read Ghost of a Potion to find out. Ghost of a Potion is a hilarious book. Hitching Post, Alabama is a charming small town (with a lot going on). Ghost of a Potion has unique, quirky characters and a mystery that will leave you guessing (it is a windy path to the killer). I give Ghost of a Potion 5 out of 5 stars. Ghost of a Potion has humor, romance, magic, and a good mystery. The perfect ingredients for a delightful cozy mystery. While Ghost of a Potion is a part of a series, it can be read alone. However, I think you will want to read the whole series. I cannot wait for the next book in A Magic Potion Mystery series.

I received a complimentary copy of Ghost of a Potion from the author (I won a copy on Facebook) in exchange for an honest review.

Complex murder plot that will pull you in until you read the final reveal! Carly Hartwell practices healing magic and her cousin Delia Barrows practices hex magic. From Halloween thru All souls' Day both can see ghosts who haven't passed over yet and need their help in doing so. At a masquerade ball the night before Halloween; Carly and her boyfriend, Dylan find his mother standing over a dead body with the murder weapon in her hand. Patricia Davis Jackson has spent her life keeping Carly away from Dylan and now she needs Carly's help to clear her of the murder. The victim's ghost attaches himself to Carly. He can't cross over until she solves his murder! Old money, greed, blackmail and secrets come together for a fantastic read. The characters become your friends and the plot will keep you guessing. Along the way, you meet two more ghosts who Carly must help and a dog that will make you laugh and cry.

I complained about the first audiobook being stilted so I feel I must point out that this one is not. It's actually really good. Yay!

I hadn't really planned to finish this series, but I ended up with no other ideas for the moment and pressed play just to have some "company". It was the best one in the series, by far, which was a really pleasant surprise.

As far as cosy mysteries goes, it's a nice story. I found the whole "followed by ghosts" thing rather amusing and the mysteries were quite clever this time around.

The characters are still somewhat shallow, even if Carly has started to become more of a real character rather than a placeholder MC with a name. Her boyfriend Dylan finally took a stand towards his awful mother and that was great, but other than that Dylan is very much like wallpaper. Room to grow and evolve in the future - if there will be more book.

I found it somewhat funny that Carly owns a potion shop, but the entire book is spent doing everything but working in said shop. Or making potions. Paranormal ingredients aside, it's really unrealistic how she's running around being a ghost whisperer full-time. I mean, it's not like the ghosts pay her bills...

But, yeah, yeah... I get it. Don't think too much. I tried not to and I ended up liking it.

Why does this have to be the last book in the series???

Y’all know paranormal is my least favorite cozy mystery book bingo theme so for me to have found a series I enjoy is a fete.

So much was unpacked in book three and I want to know the outcome of so many storylines. With that being said, the book/series ended on a good finale.

The murder was so sad and heartbreaking. The who done it and why makes you realize how bad secrets really are. Nothing good results from keeping secrets.

Now, I must find a new paranormal series for my next cozy mystery book bingo game.

Goodbye Carly Bell and framily…

Book #3 Ghost of a Potion in the series ( MAGIC POTION MYSTERY ) has everything thing coming to a head. When a murder occurs at a Gala Dance it bring with it bad feelings in everyone especially the Historical Members. When things start to get real bad it takes a lot of gut for a Potion Witch to find the answers. Even more to finally have it out with the one person who dosen't want her to marry her son.

Ghost of a Potion by Heather Blake
The Third Magic Potion Mystery

It's Halloween in Hitching Post, Alabama and Carly Bell Hartwell is getting ready to batten down the hatches. However, her plans of hibernating during the ghostpocalypse collapse when she makes eye contact with a newly departed murder victim. Carly knew things could go bad at the masquerade ball to celebrate the restoration of the Ezekiel Mansion, after all Dylan's mother, Patricia, AKA The Face of Evil, was one of the hostesses. What was unexpected was the murder of Haywood Dodd during the festivities. When Carly unwittingly made eye contact with his ghost she knew she had no choice but to solve his murder to help him cross over. What she didn't expect were the other ghosts she would meet along the way and the many secrets she'd uncover.

Ghost of a Potion is a book you don't want to put down. Fast paced fun with eccentric characters who manage to remain completely believable and a well plotted mystery make for a fantastic read. Blake cleverly uses a countdown to fuel our adrenaline and rush to solve the murder- and finish the book. We only have three days to help the ghosts before they're trapped for another year. This pressure induced time frame adds drama and a sense of urgency to the finely crafted mysteries. Yes, mysteries. We get multiple mysteries which evolve with several viable suspects and enough red herrings to keep us jumping.

As with the other books in the Magical Potions Mystery series, Ghost of a Potion is also flat our fun to read! Funny characters, witty dialogue, and amusing situations abound. Southern charm and eccentricities are on full display. Yet an honesty and deep seated love is also present. As wild and wacky as things get Blake manages to make it real and make us care.

FTC Disclosure – The publisher sent me a copy of this book in the hopes I would review it.

Halloween can be a *itch when you are a witch! Good thing Carly and Delia each have a plan for managing the unique "side effects" they experience during the spooky holiday. Unfortunately for Carly, "the best laid schemes o' mice an' men" (and empathetic witches) "often go awry". And so, instead of the peaceful Halloween hibernation she had envisioned Carly finds herself up to her pitchfork in ghosts, lies, secrets, grudges and murder. Author Heather Blake has returned us to Hitching Post with gusto and style in this wonderful new installment of her Magic Potion Mystery series, and I am still loving these characters and this quirky little southern town. Ms. Blake has a beautiful talent for creating people and places that feel warm and genuine. I started reading this series when the first book was released because I was a fan of her earlier series (Nina Quinn and Lucy Valentine mysteries - and I would highly recommend them as well), and I knew her to a gifted writer with the ability to craft a solid mystery while injecting a great deal of humor and humanity into her work. I especially appreciate her ability to "flesh out" her characters, giving them depth and substance. This book did not disappoint in any way with great character development and a couple of mystery elements that I really did not see coming. I would certainly recommend this book (as well as A Potion to Dye For and One Potion in the Grave), and I sincerely hope that there are more Potions in our future. **Note: I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. I do not personally know the author or anyone else associated with this material. This review reflects my personal, unbiased opinion.

Between Halloween and All-Soul's Day (November 2), spirits would rise from their graves and for those who have not yet crossed over, would seek out someone who could help them with this. Because of Carly's special talent with ghosts, she prefers to spend these few days in isolation, away from ghostly presences. However, this year her mother has asked her to attend the masquerade ball to be held at the Ezekiel Mansion. Since Carly's father has applied to be a member of the Harpies, an exclusive and influential group of five townspeople who plan fund-raisers and other charitable events, her mama felt Carly's presence would be an asset for his membership consideration. Carly certainly didn't expect to have a front row seat to murder, and like it or not, finds herself saddled with a ghost that needs her help to cross over. An additional incentive to finding the murderer is to help her almost-mother-in-law, Patricia, who has become the prime suspect. Patricia has always treated Carly like dirt, apparently feeling she was not good enough for her precious son, Dylan, and this may be a way for her to help their relationship improve. She almost lost Dylan once over this...she doesn't want to lose him again. But will her questions put her in danger? And how should she deal with the other ghosts that have attached themselves to her? I love this series and the main characters, as well as the relationships between them, including Carly and her cousin, Delia. I loved the twist at the end...no spoilers. I also enjoyed the various animal characters, especially Louella. I look forward to the next book in this series.

Ghost of a Potion is the 3rd book in the Magic Potion Mystery series and it's the best one yet!! It's Halloween in Hitching Post and Carly Bell Hartwell's plan to hide out for the next three days to avoid all ghosts is dashed when a friend is murdered at a masquerade ball to celebrate the opening of the newly renovated Ezekiel Mansion. To make matters worse, Carly's arch enemy (and the mother of the love of her life) is found standing over the body with the murder weapon in her hand. When the ghost of the victim, Haywood Dodd, asks for Carly's help in solving his murder so that he can cross over, she starts to investigate and she ends up with two more ghosts that need her help.

This book is fast-paced, by turns laugh-out-loud funny and deadly serious, and full of twists and turns. I figured out "who done it' just as Carly did, which is perfect for my taste. I don't like to know too soon.

One of the main things I look for in a series is how the characters grow and change over time. This is just the 3rd book but the characters are already really coming in to their own and I can't wait to see where they go from here!

I love the books of Heather Blake, particularly the Wishcraft series. This is my first dive into the Magic Potion Mysteries, and I was enchanted. Carly is a fabulous character and I love her spunk. She and the other characters in the book are funny and endearing. Carly is a white witch who owns a potion shop in Hitching Post, Alabama (the wedding capitol of the South) and her family and friends are very supportive. Once a year (Halloween), she likes to hibernate for a few days because she is also an empath who can see ghosts and they want her to help them deal with their issues so that they can move on. She is at a party right before her hibernation begins and a murder occurs. The ghost tracks her down so that she can help figure out whodunnit. Fun and trilling, I loved the characters, plot, and setting.

I was provided a copy of the book for a fair and honest review.

Ms. Blake does it again, when I pick up one of her books I know that I am in for a good read and she has never failed to deliver. The characters are diverse with their own unique personalities, I adore the humor, I had many laugh out loud moments. I love the Southern mannerisms, they draw you into the characters even more. In this book Carly is in hiding from Halloween ghosts, she had a bad past experience and doesn't want to get involved. She is sucked in of course when there is a murder. From there the story will take you on twists and turns between past and present stories until it is all woven together in the end and wraps you up like a warm blanket. If you haven't read the others in this series, I don't think that you will have a problem following. I will definitely continue on with this series, it is one that I know that I will be in for a great read each time.

Perfect Halloween Tale
Carly's paranormal talents help her ferret out the blackmailing murderer in this tale set on Halloween night. With the help of her family and their 'talents', she chases down many clues.
One suspect is her almost husband's mother, who is unhappy about the couple's renewed relationship..and a host of her future mother-in law's friends.
There are twists, turns and questions. This is a well written cozy with detailed descriptions of the places, people, and their reasons and reactions to the happenings in the book. If you like a little humor, romance and paranormal in a mystery...this is the one for you. I won a copy of this book and promised to give an honest opinion and was happy to, as it was on my TBR list.

I've come to really love this cozy-mystery series. This cute mystery was centered around Halloween in Hitching Post. Carly once again stumbles across a dead body and this time the suspect is none other that her boyfriend's mean mama. As always, Carly tries to be the bigger person, so she tries to figure out who was really behind the murder.

I loved seeing Carly and Delia working together and how their relationship has evolved. By now, this cast of characters feels like old friends. As with the other books in this series, it was a fun read with witty dialogue and amusing situations. I sincerely hope there will be more Potions in the future.

I love this book! The focus of this book was much different than the previous ones - it was more about the ghosts than about potions - but it worked well. Heather Blake brings the characters and town to life, making each person seem real and Hitching Post, AL a place you'll want to visit.
While I have liked the previous books in the series, I have to admit this one by far is my favorite. You don't have to read the rest to understand this one. I highly recommend!

I am always so excited every time Heather has a new book out, you just cant go wrong with one of her books, and this one is no exception. I absolutely loved it, I love the characters, and the small town of Hitching Post, Alabama is one you would want to visit. Add in some ghosts, and a mystery that I did not solve, and you have a great book. I also must say I was shocked at who the murderer turned out to be. I look forward to the next book, this one ends on a cliffhanger of sorts, and I'm so anxious to see what happens.

This was good, I do wish Dylan stood up to his mom more in Carly’s behalf. Overall, the book shows the dangers of keeping secrets m. Much of them so small if they had been revealed initially would have been a nothingburger. Carly finally getting over her Halloween phobia and helping out the three ghosts was also great v
