4.5 ⭐️ | Wait… Time out… this is not at all how I expected Emily, Stephen & Clara’s story to unfold! I thought I had it figured out a couple of times, however each and every one of my theories were incorrect. There were a lot of times in this story that I simply did not know what was going, and I mean that in the best way possible. If you enjoy domestic thrillers with jaw dropping moments, delusional characters, and unreliable narrators — this one’s for you! This is my fifth read by James Caine, and stories like this make me want to dive even deeper into this catalog!
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Loved this one! Stephen is an author who met wife, Emily at his book signing. Things are going well initially until the subterfuge begins and we aren't sure who to believe! It's one of those crazy books that keeps you hanging until the end!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 4/5 Stars My Husband’s an Author by James Caine 🖊️📚 This was a solid psychological thriller… but not quite thrillery enough for me 👀 🧠 Quick take: Being married to an author sounds intriguing—until the secrets start piling up and nothing feels trustworthy. Tension builds, perspectives get messy, and you’re left wondering who’s lying… and about what. ✨ What I liked: An unreliable narrator done well (love/hate relationship with this one 😅) Creepy, uneasy vibes throughout Fast, easy read that keeps you invested 🤨 But here’s where it lost me a bit: I kept waiting for more twists—that jaw-drop moment—and then suddenly… the end? It wrapped up so fast I had to stop and think, wait… did I miss something? I wanted just a little more chaos before the credits rolled.
📌 Tropes: Unreliable Narrator Psychological Thriller Marriage with Secrets
I definitely had a good time with this thriller and it was a first-time read of this author. The chapters were short and engaging and each one kept me wanting more. There were a handful of twists throughout the book but there was one in the middle in particular that just flipped me upside down and changed the entire way I was viewing this story. It was a pretty wild feeling to totally flip on people/the situation like that. Will be on the look for more from James Caine!
I almost gave up on this book. Glad I didn’t because the twists at the end are epic!!! But another book that has so much repeating lover and over. I had just finished one and then this was the same. If you don’t mind that I would definitely recommend this book.
I don't know how James Caine does it, but I become a speed reader who doesn't move for hours when I begin one of his books. With every page there is a new twist and turn and it's so very hard to pull away from his writing. I absolutely love that I can never guess how the ending is going to go or who the perpetrator is. I loved this book, it was a page turner and it enthralled me from beginning to end. I love how his brain works, it doesn't ever occur to me where the characters are headed.
This book is another great example of how addictive and pleasing it is to read a thriller written by him. I recommend this book to all thriller lovers, a fast paced thriller with twists and turns you will not see happening. Buckle up your seatbelts when reading My Husband's An Author because you're going for one hell of a ride.
Emily thinks she’s living a fairy tale—married to a bestselling author, a quiet life, a shared future—until she stumbles across her husband’s “research.” And by research, I mean detailed searches on how to kill a wife, fake a murder, and collect life insurance. Suddenly, every look, every habit, every late night feels… calculated. James Caine does paranoia exceptionally well. As Emily digs deeper, the line between fiction and reality starts to blur, and you’re left wondering whether she’s overreacting—or already in danger. The short chapters keep the tension tight, and that creeping sense of dread never lets up. You’re constantly questioning motives, timing, and who actually holds the power in this marriage. And that twist? Dark, unexpected, and genuinely unsettling. The kind that makes you pause for a second after finishing and think, wow. Fast-paced, sharp, and twisted in all the right ways, this is one of those thrillers where the real horror isn’t a masked killer—it’s the person sleeping beside you. James Caine absolutely delivered. 🔪📚
Very twisty! James Caine's MY HUSBAND'S AN AUTHOR is quite the page-turner. The book switches perspectives, to tell the story of a wife whose husband is keeping secrets. As readers uncover what thriller author, Stephen Dyer is up to, I began to question what really was going on. Becoming more and more unsure of the truth, I was hanging on every word, learning more with each side of the story, uncovering unexpected twist after twist. This is the kind of book that you want to return to immediately after completing. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and recommend this quick, easy read for lovers of the psychological thriller genre.
NOTE: I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily and with integrity.
This was a one-sitting read for me. I absolutely love an unreliable narrator, and this book delivered exactly that. I was questioning everyone, trusting no one, and second-guessing every single thought I had right up until the end.
The psychological tension is so well done. James Caine once again proves how skilled he is at getting inside your head and messing with it in the best way.
Twisty, unsettling, and impossible to put down. If you love thrillers that keep you guessing and mentally spiraling, this one is a must.
This was good but didn’t love! Stephen an author is married to Emily, Emily wants the perfect life but Stephen doesn’t provide that for her so she’s stages either computer searches that Stephen is going to murder Emily. When in fact Emily actually murders Stephen and sets him up, she uses the killing as self defense. It’s not until Stephen’s 1 month mistress Clara who is a lawyer gets involved and uncovers the truth. Emily wrote journals about plotting his murder and getting away with it. Clara finds the journals and gives to police, that’s how Emily gets the guilty verdict 2 years later. Quick chapters and minimal characters which I enjoyed but just wasn’t fully drawn in.

My Husband's An Author by James Caine is a psychological thriller, and I received a digital review copy through BookSirens. The book cover and title caught my eye first. I don't know why, but I'm a sucker for books that involve writers or authors. The blurb sounded intriguing, and I haven't read a psych thriller in a hot minute, so I decided to give it a go.
The book is written in first-person POV through Emily's eyes and, as the title suggests, her husband is an author--a psychological thriller author. Unfortunately, Emily and Stephen's marriage is dwindling and the love has faded away. When she finds his search history about, "how to kill your wife", and "how to collect life insurance", and "divorce attorneys", she begins to get paranoid. (Rightfully so.)
I was super into the story for the the first half, and then began to lose interest the further I read. Halfway through the book, Clara is introduced and the chapters semi-alternate between Clara's first-person POV and Emily's first-person POV. The change was a bit jarring, especially since the two characters had similar voices.
The narrative was repetitive with a lot of explaining going on, rather than showing. For example, Clara speaks to the police after she believes she's being followed. Instead of showing us the conversation, Clara explains to the reader, "The officer asks me this and I answered with that and then they said this...", etc.
My Husband's An Author was also predictable. I enjoy foreshadowing, of course, but the foreshadowing that happened in this book was bit a literal. It made me stop and realize who the actual culprit was long before its revealed.
That said, the author did a great job sprinkling clues and red herrings about. If it wasn't for that one conversation between characters, I'm not sure if I would have figured it out.
Overall, My Husband's An Author was a decent read. Being at roughly 250 pages, I found it to be too short for a psychological thriller. This genre usually ranges between 300 and 350 pages. It definitely could have used more fleshing out to be more suspenseful. The final forty pages or so is the aftermath. So, really, the main plot is roughly 200 pages.
This is my first time reading a book by James Caine and, even though I wasn't a huge fan of the way the narrative was written and guessed the ending relatively easy, I do look forward to reading some of his other work.

01-13-26. This book is going to have to be an absolute show stopper for me to change my 1 star rating. I am not very far along in reading, less than halfway, but so far, the typos, the misspellings, the gaffs in prose, the errors in tense, type, gender typing and plot are just horrendous. At the moment, one star is ONLY because I have kept going to see if there is going to be a reason, even a mundane, minor one, to continue reading. It's beginning to seem as though people who WANT to write should actually learn HOW to WRITE BEFORE they publish something. Even an E-pub, which is ludicrous. If I publish this "review"right now, close the book and move on to something actually worth my time, my one star is generous. I will give it another hour. We'll see, but so far? It's not looking good. 01-14-26 I tried. I really tried. But in the end, this book just eluded any sense of context or content. This narration, as it veers from point of views that are disjointed and tangled, is confusing. I kept waiting for some massive secret to be revealed in "the journal" but that never happened. The story is weak and rather common. Someone cheats in a marriage and someone vows to get revenge because of that. I didn't understand why murdering your friend is the best way to accomplish your goal, but I didn't write this mess. And it is messy. The text just screams for some good editing, some proofreading and some cleaning up of the timeline. By the time the MC is finally arrested and charged with double homicide, I was bored beyond caring. I just didn't like the characters and I couldn't find the energy to care about any of them. I have published a few creative pieces, and a few that have professional styles, in particular, medicine and nursing. I am not a novice. But this book, it's just laughable that it's published at all. I wish the author well, but I hope he keeps his day job.
This book uses the unreliable narrator trope in an interesting way, and I’m glad I finished it because the twist changes everything. I would have ended the story thinking the main character was just an annoying housewife. However, the execution didn’t fully do it for me.
The story relies heavily on journal entries, but they mostly repeat what the narrator has already told us rather than adding any new insight. The idea of multiple journals (the one meant to mislead, the one revealing the truth, and the one the reader actually sees) is intriguing, but the structure left me feeling confused. Learning the journal's intentions at the end seemed more like a dishonest way to misdirect the reader than to add anything meaningful to the story.
There are some psychological elements, such as fear of financial instability, resentment, and the narrator’s distorted sense of contribution to her marriage, but these themes are mostly explained rather than gradually revealed through her behavior and interactions. I think they would have been more powerful if they had been woven throughout the story instead of being clarified in just a few key moments.
The book also includes a meta-commentary on unreliable narrators near the end, which made the twist feel less surprising than obvious. I would have preferred that insight earlier in the story so that it would have been something I recalled in an "Aha" moment.
The ending extends beyond the main reveal, which is an unusual and interesting choice, but for me, it weakened the story's impact. Learning who the narrator truly is after the fact didn’t make her more compelling or annoying, and I felt the story could have ended more effectively once the truth was exposed.
Overall, this was an inventive concept, one I'm not sure many authors are able to do well. But it's worth reading if you enjoy unreliable narrators, but it didn’t fully live up to its potential for me.
My Husband's An Author by James Caine is another one of his fast, addictive popcorn thrillers. It has that familiar Caine rhythm: quick pace, clean writing, and a story that’s easy to settle into. This one made me wonder if he was working through something a little more personal, because the premise feels surprisingly introspective.
The story follows Emily, married to psychological thriller author Stephen Dyer. They met by chance at one of his signings, and even though his genre wasn’t usually her thing, she was drawn in by his charm. Four years later, the shine has worn off. Stephen hasn’t written in over a year, the marriage feels flat, and he’s constantly disappearing in search of “inspiration.” Emily starts to question where he’s really going and whether his dark, twisty characters are reflections of something a little too close to home.
I flew through this in a couple of days, partly because I enjoy Caine’s style so much. His chapters are the perfect length, the pacing never drags, and he knows how to deliver a tight, satisfying thriller without unnecessary fluff. The twists land, and the ending pulled everything together in a way that really worked.

After four years of marriage, Emily Dyer’s fairy tale marriage to bestselling author Stephen Dyer has turned into anything but a a happy ending. He hasn’t published a book almost a year, his ”research” translates to motorcycling around, seeking "inspiration," and not writing a single word.
Emily decides to investigate and finds his computer filled with “plot” points revolving around how to kill a wife, fake a murder, collect life insurance.
Story notes . . . or a sinister real-life plan?

With its short chapters, intriguing premise, and just enough twists in the unfolding plot to keep those pages turning, readers are sure to find it difficult to set this book aside before turning the final page. Filled with tension and an ever-building sense of trepidation, it’s a story that keeps readers guessing.
The fast pace of the story and some unexpected plot twists lead to an ending that is certain to be nothing like readers expected. Readers who enjoy psychological thrillers will find much to appreciate in this unputdownable thriller.
Highly recommended.

James Caine’s My Husband's an Author is a domestic thriller that grabs you immediately with its polished prose. The writing itself is the standout feature here - it’s smooth, engaging, and sets a strong foundation for the story. Caine does a great job of maintaining suspense regarding the characters' honesty; I found myself constantly questioning who was telling the truth, which kept me turning pages. Unfortunately, for avid thriller readers, the plot is a bit too familiar. While it is well written, the story doesn't qualify as new or unique within the genre. It relies on standard tropes, and while the central mystery is entertaining, the eventual twist wasn't unusual or shocking. It serves the plot well enough, but it doesn't offer that fresh take or mind-blowing reveal that elevates a thriller to the next level. The biggest drawback for me was the conclusion, it just fell flat. It lacked that fulfilling sense of closure or excitement that usually caps off a great suspense novel. If you are looking for a well-written book and you don't need the shock and awe of a big twist then this one is for you.
Thanks to the publisher and book sirens for this advanced reader copy.
A very interesting read with Stephen and Emily who are a married couple living every day life. Stephen is a writer making progress on his second novel but his methods of doing this are very questionable.
A friend who questions Stephens life style choices and what he does day on day out sets Emily off on a firenzy. This is only just the start of it.
Written from three points of view mainly Emily , another character who is thrown into the choas who really doesnt want to be part of it and you can understand why.
The quote that springs to mind in this book is that you can be in room with someone and still feel lonely. You get such a different point of view from Emily and Stephen. I wont be checking any internet history after reading this hahahah.
The writing is very easy to follow , it does have you questionning people throughout. Quite the turn of events throughout. Thank goodness Clara can see through the pair of them!
After four years of marriage, Emily Dyer’s life with bestselling thriller author Stephen isn’t what it used to be. He hasn’t published a book in nearly a year and says his long rides and late nights are all part of “research.” When Emily finally looks at his computer, she finds detailed notes and searches about killing a wife, staging a murder, and collecting life insurance. From that moment on, she notices how closely Stephen watches her and how well he knows her routines, fears, and weak points. She can’t tell if she’s overreacting or if she’s already in real danger.
Rating: 3⭐. A quick, easy read when I didn’t know what to pick up...BUT I didn’t love it. The plot feels familiar if you read thrillers often, and parts of the story felt repetitive. Overall, the writing is easy to follow, and the mystery is entertaining to an extent, but the twist at the end wasn’t surprising or new. Overall, it’s fine for a casual read, but it wasn’t very memorable.
Enjoyed reading this fast-paced suspense thriller book.
I didn't expect the direction the story took after an amazing twist.
This is why I love reading mystery suspense novels. If you are 100% certain that this thing might happen in the book, there is a chance that it will not happen.
If you love reading mysteries, suspense, and thrillers, then this book is for you.
✨Love these lines from the book. If you haven't read the book, then these will be spoilers for you.
→ It takes a terrible incident for something to change, like always.
→ Despite what others may think, everyone deserves a second chance, especially those you love most.
→ Sometimes I forget the real things happening around me when I’m coming up with all the fake things in my head.
→ His skill is creating fictional worlds. Mine’s making real spaces beautiful.

My Husband’s An Author by James Caine is a fast-paced psychological thriller that pulls you in from the first page and never lets go. The story is tense, cleverly structured, and filled with subtle psychological unease that builds steadily as the plot unfolds. Caine’s sharp pacing makes this a quick, addictive read, while the layered characters keep the suspense feeling grounded and believable. The satisfying twist lands effectively, recontextualizing what came before without feeling forced, and the open ending lingers just long enough to spark discussion and interpretation. This is a compelling thriller that rewards attentive readers and leaves you thinking well after the final page—perfect for fans of smart, tightly written psychological suspense.
Emily and Stephen’s romance began like a scene from one of his novels: a series of chance sightings at the local supermarket followed by a fateful encounter at his latest book signing. But the honeymoon phase of their marriage is ending abruptly as the man Emily thought she knew begins to fade away. Stephen has started vanishing at all hours, claiming he’s deep in "research" for his next project. When Emily’s suspicion leads her to his private office, she discovers a digital trail of chilling searches: how to kill in self-defense and the details of her own life insurance policy. She wants to believe it’s all for the plot of a book—until the truth behind his disappearances forces her to wonder if she isn't his wife, but his next victim. In a house built on fiction, Emily must decide if the story is ending, or if she's the one being written out.
This was my first read from this author, so I was excited to jump in. However, it fell a little flat for me.
The beginning was too slow paced and felt a bit repetitive. I'll admit initiallly I felt sorry for the FMC but she eventually got on my nerves and her husband wasn't really a likeable character either.
Don't get me wrong, I did enjoy some parts. After 40 percent there was a little switch up that piqued my interest. At this point I was more invested but I feel like the ending rested on some flimsy ideas so just felt a bit unrealistic for me.
I have heard good things about this author so this won't put me off. I'll be back to try another read in the future.
Have you read any books by this author before? If yes, are there any other books you would suggest I read?
If I'm being completely honest, I wasn't sure I was completely sold on My Husband's an Author for the first few chapters. I was coasting through, thinking I had already figured out what was happening and that I knew exactly where the story was headed and then the middle of the book hit. Author James Caine completely caught me off guard with a plot twist that I genuinely didn't see coming!! It totally changed my perspective and hooked me for the rest of the story. I am glad I stuck with it because the end was worth it and if we circle back to the beginning of my review… I most certainly did not have the story figured out at the start!
Thank you to BookSirens, and author James Caine for this advance review copy. I am leaving this review voluntarily.
This story was decent, a bit repetitive and the FMC wasn't very likeable, I also found the story to be pretty predictable. Though it was predictable, it was still interesting to see how things were told to the reader and the way the twists were laid out - and I'm glad the ending happened how it did. I often find books like this hard to review, I don't want to say too much here that might ruin the story for anyone else. This was my first book from James Caine, I would definitely read another from him.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
That wasn't a plot twist I expected. I swore I had the answers then BOOM! hit with another twist. Yet, something in my gut told me I needed to look closer to this one because the main character Emily seemed off. I get why Stephen was paranoid. I get why Clara came into the fold. It really gives you chills though. I felt bad Amanda got the worst end of the stick for just being the good friend. I won't spoil anything but something you should know this Author is worth reading. I really enjoyed this book and I should learn not to read these type of books at night but it was sooooooooooooooooooooooo good.
