This is a very unusual story. It took several chapters to get into it and figure out what in the world was going on; but then it moved at a fast clip and was really hard to put down. This story is a very different take on an incredibly dysfunctional family. You find you are working through life problems with a rich child, Reona Carter, who grew up being mostly ignored by her parents, especially her distant mother, losing her only brother when he simply disappeared at 18, and then being left penniless at the death of her father, an extremely wealthy, demanding businessman. Now an adult, and losing her job where she was working at the behest of her now deceased father, Reona is contacted by his attorney to let her know that, unbelievably, she has inherited the deed to a cabin on a lake in the middle of nowhere. Thrilled to finally have something she can call her own, and finally being able to get away from people who hate her because her name is Carter, she packs her meager belongings and moves right in. But things do not go easy for Reona. Other than Mick who lives not far from her, Reona begins to realize that she has moved to a place where people are not particularly open to strangers. Still, happy to be on her own, she finds a part-time job and makes a few acquaintenances. Luckily, Reona is able to enlist the help of her neighbor, Mick, when she is suddenly faced with unknown persons breaking into her home and trashing her meager possessions. What in the world is going on? Why is she a target? But Mick has family problems of his own when his sister shows up to live in his home so she can hide from their crazy mother. As the story unfolds, Reona is faced with dealing with her own evil, conniving mother, the legacy of her mysterious father and his scheming, greedy partners, mysterious stalkers, and even murderers. This was an extremely interesting book. I do recommend it if you enjoy diving into a situation that seems totally impossible to get out of. Lots of twists and turns. I am happy to report that thankfully, this story has a very satisfactory ending.
