I picked up this at a sale bin one morning, along with a couple of titles on working-class jobs in Great Britain during the Edwardian Period and modern slavery. From the onset, the slimness sort of made me question the title itself, particularly if it's going to tread on a historical theme, how did the editor manage to choose which authors and narratives equally represent this subject?

And so, when I leafed through the book, I found that it did contain a few nuggets on the history of slavery, albeit it is squeezed in between reportage on modern slavery. Perhaps what can be appreciated in this work is that aside from the surge of African slavery to their plight in Northern America, there is also an inclusion of other races such as Asia, Eastern Europe, and South America. With essays from people in NGOs concerning modern-day slavery, the irony of clothing shop owners, the clergy and private sectors, each of the narratives detail their own takes on what they have done to help solve this plague, especially in an age where the number of slaves exceeds the ones from centuries ago.
