Selena Taylor is an American citizen determined to find her grandparents after she loses her family to the violence of the drug cartel in Mexico. Crossing the border into Texas turns out to be the easy part.
Virtually penniless and enticingly innocent, she soon finds herself at the mercy of Travis Blake. Travis is a hard-working, self-made rancher that has never known love or softness of any kind. His only use for women is sexual, and Selena is caught on his ranch with no way out.
While Selena plots her escape from his control, Travis ruthlessly and methodically tightens his possession and makes it impossible for her to leave.
The struggle that follows is a clash of wills that pits purity against passion, virtue against vice and love against lust.
Always a fan of romantic fiction, I've always been in love with the alpha-male. So in love, I've never been quite satisfied with the restrictions of series romance. I like to get into a guy's mind and have him do or say exactly what he's feeling at the moment, and sometimes I shock even myself! I consider my stories soft erotica; one man, one woman, heterosexual. But since abiding love is always the happy ending I'm looking for, my couples are always monogamous. My guy would never share his woman with anyone, and she is always enough to satisfy him. Since I believe that love starts with lust, my stories are always highly sexual, explicit in nature, and hopefully totally satisfying to my readers. I hope you enjoy reading them as much as I enjoy writing them.
Spanish speaking population be crying fat, ugly tears over the book's Spanish. "Es no problema, Senorita."
Feminists be rolling their eyes at the sort of romantic relationship the story demonstrates.
Dynamic plot lovers be yawning over the progression of the storyline.
Basically everyone be wondering why the caveman hero does not actually live in a cave.
But
Me
be admiring the guy's patience because just take a look at this SAINT of a man:
"You gave away my damn cookies." But there was no anger in his voice.
NO ANGER? Nah, wait, I must have read it wrong... NO ANGER??? 💀💀💀 You better believe my transformation into a beast after someone giving away my damn cookies.
Me be admiring the girl's cleverness:
"Selena, baby, we need to be clear on something. I have to make sure you understand what I want from this marriage. There can be no mistake." He put his hand under her chin and lifted her eyes to his. His voice dropped an octave. "Do you know what I want?" Selena nodded her head. "Yes. You w-want free housekeeping."
The title of the book should be taken seriously. (srry for my English, byee)
I love Lynda Chance's OTT alpha heroes. They are super possessive and protective over their women, and Travis is no exception. From the first page of this book, I was pulled into the story instantly and I found myself not being able to put it down. The story moved along at a brisk pace so it didn't take me long to finish the entire story.
Selena Taylor was brought to Travis Blake's ranch with black and purple bruises on her face and the side of her body. The moment he saw her, he felt like someone kicked him in the stomach. His cowhands all thought that she was a boy, but Travis knew right away that she was a girl and he wanted her badly. So he did every way to keep her as far away from his men as possible.
Selena knew that she would certainly be safe from other men, but how could she handle an alpha man like Travis? How could she save her virginity as she was tempted by the sparks of desire that ignited between them whenever they were in the same room?
At first, I had a problem with Selena. She was a bit annoying and too weak for my liking. But after she married Travis, I started to warm up to her. And by the end, she surprised me with her strength and how she made him understand his own feelings for her. That was very impressive.
Overall, this was hot and sensual, yet sweet and beautiful. For me, it was a winner and I would recommend this book to anyone who loves reading insta-love stories with OTT alpha heroes and virgin heroines. You will not be disappointed!
I feel this book is a telltale of how humankind goes...
Him: Thinking he tricked her, forced her to stay with him and sure that he was being subtle with his sexual intentions.
Her: Fully aware of how he wants to get her in bed naked, questioning herself if her feelings are deep enough she should be staying with him or is she taking advantage? And knowing too well his feelings before he knows them himself.
Aaand you cannot convince otherwise.
It was a good paced, well written story, about a Mexican-American girl who leaves Mexico because she feels insecure in her country after losing her whole family and ends up in the H’s ranch and under his intense radar.
H behaves like a proper caveman, but wearing cowboy boots and a Stetson hat (much to my enjoyment), and feels deeply gutted by his guilt on how he’s giving her no choice but to stay with him (which we all know, is completely true, you’re an asshole Travis, but I love you) but h is smart, and knows all too well all that and chooses to stay (or not?) with him.
Thank you very much Aunty for the rec, despite the h being a monster and giving his cookies away, and the tiny bits of problemo it had, it was a very enjoyable read!! ❤️
Just exactly what I needed right now. A hero who knows what he wants and never wavers. Not one sliver of other woman drama. Not one iota of pushing away. Loved how he realized what he felt was love all along. Pure alpha perfection. So good.
**Audio reread** If you like a hero who is rough around the edges, OTT bossy/controlling and has a tenancy to be a jerk, this book may work for you. Travis is a rough bossy rancher, Selena is young (23) and has had a rough life in Mexico after the loss of her family. She falls for the OTT alpha. You see moments of her standing up for herself.
-no cheating -no ow/om drama -not a couple for a lot of the book but lots of sexual tension -virgin heroine -hero not a virgin but never had a relationship. Goes to town every once in a while to pick up q woman for a night 🤢 -instalust (Travis doesn't think he can love) -no violence of a sexual nature -good epilogue about 5 years out
Lynda Chance does growly alphas like a champ! When Travis is told a young boy has been found beaten on his ranch, it doesn't take him long to figure out the young boy is actually a young girl. Selena took a chance and fled Mexico after her family was killed. Little did she know that meeting Travis would be the start of the rest of her life. Classic Lynda Chance. Grumpy OTT alpha, no cheating, HEA and a great epilogue.
This is a typical Lynda Chance read. The H is aggressively jealous/possessive and controlling and he’s just *barely* holding it together and keeping it legal when it comes to the h. 😅
This wasn’t a favorite of mine though. He seems to just latch on to the h because he needed a house keeper and cook. They don’t really get to know each other. I just found it unromantic. 🤷🏼♀️ The h didn’t really have a personality.
Bottom Line? Not bad but not memorable. ⭐️⭐️⭐️
⚠️SAFETY SQUAD SPOILERS⚠️
- no cheating or sharing
- no OW drama
- OM drama - the H is jealous of anyone who breathes the same air as the h
- no dubcon… but he isn’t opposed to it. 😬😅
- h is a 22 year old virgin
- H is mid 30s (I think) and is experienced, but not really a manwhore
It was okay. Travis was an ass for most of the book. He finally grew on me around 75%. Selena was super naive and almost too innocent. I realize she was raised that way but I like my heroines a little more knowledgeable.
After my disastrous physics viva in college the other day, I read this book and loved it. It was exactly what I needed after embarrassing myself in front of my teachers. They asked me a question from one experiment and I gave answers of the other 💀💀. They all laughed at me after that 😭😭. My only saving grace was it wasn't only me, almost the whole section flunked. So, yeah there's that.
Anyways, it was a typical Lynda Chance book. Hero meets the virginal heroine, and then bam insta love. There is nothing much to the plot, except the hero's OTT behavior which I absolutely devoured.
This book has good writing, awesome sex scenes and insta love. What more do you need? This is a perfect read when you're in a slump or just want the earth to swallow you up!
This was an ok read for me. I felt the hero fought his true feelings for too long and came off as kind of a selfish jerk at times and only wanting her just for sex! lol I didn't care for it. The heroine I felt seemed younger than 22 .She was way too innocent. But even with all that being said the hero was a jealous, possessive alpha which I loved:) And it had it sweet hot moments! Safety gang safe!
I'm going to give this FOUR stars. Mainly because I've gotten my hands on some really shitty work here lately, and I'm just happy to have finally read something else that excited me. But that's about all it did. It got the engine going, if ya know what I mean. But it didn't do much beyond that. There was very little plot and/or character development. Just a steamy, yet sweet story set on a ranch in Texas.
Quick Breakdown: - Set in Texas on a Ranch, but modern day - Hero was 32 - heroine was 23 - heroine was born & raised in Mexico, but her father was an American - Hero was experienced and used to be a manwhore when he was in the rodeo circuit but his sexy time is limited now because there are no women on his secluded ranch - heroine was a very innocent virgin & had never even kissed a man before - Hero was OTT jealous & possessive (deliciously so) - Found family (both literally & figuratively) - HEA - 5 years later Epilogue
This is a wonderful story as well as my second book by the author within a day. She does make her male characters possessive and dominating, but its always driven by jealousy and a strong attraction to their female characters. And I find that likable.
Selena is an American and Mexican citizen, determined to find her grandparents in America after she loses her family. She leaves Mexico, to get away from the violence of the drugs. So she crosses the border into Texas with no money and just her bag pack. After a couple of rough days, she finds her self in Travis's barn. Travis is an ex rodeo star now self-made rancher. His has grown up without a mother and a drunken father. When Selena is discovered by the ranch hands, both Selena and Travis will build a relationship that both weren't expecting. Travis will become possessive and demanding and Selena will try not to lose herself.
This was a nice story and a bit sad in certain areas. I really felt sorry for Selena, when she was found and what she went through just tug at your heart. I admire the way Selena stood her ground sexually and mentally. Even though she stood her ground, it drove Travis crazy. To Travis, Selena was a walking temptation that eventually drove him to craziness, obsession and possessiveness. The only statement I didn't like, it got so obsessive for Travis that he said he wanted to see her barefoot, pregnant, in the kitchen and bed. But Travis was a sweet heart and sexy. I laughed a few times at the ranch hands when they discovered Selena isn't a boy and can cook. I thought the Epilogue was so sweet and nice.
This was an almost perfect book in that he waited for her and he was faithful. I can't give it a 5 stars because he was way way too controlling. She could not even leave the house for Pete sake. He does get better but it's more of a 4.5 then a 5. The heroine was so down on her luck that it screamed, victim. The hero was nice most times and he did everything for her to recover. He never wanted her to work at all in the house. She insisted. I loved how protective and possessive he was but it did get much when it came to her talking to others. Great story and a keeper for me.
Thoroughly enjoyed it. Main characters were made for each other. She was the sweetness to his rough and tumble nature. Hero’s jealousy was adorable. And epilogue was beautiful. Recommended.
3-1/2 stars. A cute little romance. It was a bit different in that the heroine was a young virgin and it was important to her to stay that way. She believed that sex was only for marriage. And the hero was an ass but I liked him regardless. He was pretty bad about trying to get her in bed anyway. So normal realistic guy stuff. One of the parts I enjoyed the most is that she was fairly aware of how jerklike he was being and just went along with him as you do sometimes with men. Sort of he can think all he wants that he is winning this male/female thing but since I'm getting what I want I'll not call him on his bulls**t. He did have a crisis of conscience about how he had manipulated her and kept her from having any other options but to stay with him and eventually marry him. So I forgave him his asshatery.
All that being said, there wasn't a whole lot of conflict or tension involved here so if you're looking for that this might not be the book for you. It was however well written. It flowed nicely and was well paced. Good use of language and fine sense of place with just the right amount of description to paint a picture. Not an erotic story although there were some fairly hot love scenes after they get married. No glaring ebook formatting errors.
This was a sweet story. Hero fought his feelings for a bit too long for me. And she was just so shy and inexperienced. It was like she was a child, not a 22 year old woman. But it was a very easy and sweet story. Got a little steamy towards the end, but not the typical Lynda Chance story. Totally safe.
I must warn anyone about to read this book that it is not for the easily offended. It is a great story and my favorite of all the Lynda chance books/ short stories. The first time for the couple I must admit though was a bit anti-climactic and some of the things said were too cheesy to be comfortably read.
...0_0...
Even though their first time together ( when he officially takes her virginity) was not electrifying at all, the other scenes of them together were SO HOT. REALLY HOT, And there were plenty! If you are curious about Lynda chance, Read this one.
I often reread it. Maybe I'll start walking accross some ranches in texas >_>
I enjoy Alfa Males even when they are a bit too over-obsessed. If the heroine is into it - I am into it!
But this was too much for me. The hero is just plain old mean. The heroine is 23 years old but she felt like a small wounded girl to me. Travis response after seeing Selena's citizenship papers scared me.
A quick calculation put her age at twenty-three. She wasn't a teenager. Thank God. Instantaneous relief surged through Travis. He wasn't lusting after a minor.
Keep in mind that he just met her like ten minutes ago and she is badly wounded and scared (a lot). Furthermore, she hardly speaks English. Even though Travis tended to her wounds and helped her to get back on her feet he was mean and harsh and really awful to her during it.
"We're going to play this one way and one way only. I say jump, and you say how high, got that?"
Travis thought about Selena intimately very very often. He also tried to touch and kiss her all the time. And it's kind of funny how he is blaming everyone around him of 'thinking dirty' about her but then says :
"I'm a grown man. I can control myself."
This book made me feel uncomfortable and I wanted to slap Travis all the time.
POSSESSIVE. JEALOUS. SO POSSESSIVE. SO JEALOUS. LIKE.........will not let ANYONE breath the same air as her. SERIOUSLY VERY MUCH ALPHA.
SELENA/23/SWEEEEEEEEEEEEET/SHY/MEXICAN-
I felt like replacing Travis, JUST so i could catch a glimpse of her........god she was...........SOOOOOOOOO PRETTY.🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺 And.........OMG she was ............naiive AND smart at the same time. I never thought Lynda would write about SUCH a stunning personality.
Thoughts-
❤Aaaaaaaaaaaah HELL!!!!!!! This was THE BEST by LC. This book was better than the ENTIRE books written by LC. For some that statement might be a strech , but that's what I felt after finishing this.
❤I....DO NOT have words , how was this insta-love AND slow-burn at the same time? 🤔😳😳😍😍😍
❤She was Mexican, he was American, she didnt know how to speak English so.......she's stuttering through the whole book, which was.........Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarghhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!😭😭😭😍😍😍😍😍. That stutter was also captivating.
❤Don't get me started on the Chemistry .PLEASE DON'T.
❤And the sex? 🤪🤪🤪😱😱😱😱😱🤐🤐🤐🤐🤐🤐🤐🤐😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋
❤Some people (*cough* feminists) might find this boring as hellllllll and TOTALLY inappropriate. Because she was........kind of a doormat, BUT, BUT,BUT, throughout the book, i NEVER felt like he was being an asshole to her. It was wierd because he had hot and cold behaviour, one second he wanted her and the other, he felt that she was too good for him. BUT nevertheless he treed her like his queen.
❤What i wouldn't GIVe to be in Selena's place right now. I LOVVVVVVVVED the way Travis loved her, with a FIRM and GENTLE hands..........

I really enjoyed this book and it is re-read worthy with a caveat I will explain in my dislikes. Before this book, I read a book that had so much drama and angst that reading this book was relief. There was singular drama surrounding feelings between H and h.
When I was reading this book, I was going crazy thinking I've read this already, but I haven't. It's because it has a similar plot to two other books I really like:
Caleb's Blessing by Jordan Silver The Rancher's Nanny by Sam Crescent
H is Travis - 32 years old h is Selena - 23 years old
Selena is a Mexican-American who grew up in Mexico and fled the country after her mother, father, and older brother were killed by drug lords. She travels to Texas via the border trying to reach Houston where she believes her paternal grandparents live. She is broke - only having $25 to survive to get her to Houston. When she reached Laredo, she is beaten by drug runners, suffering black eye and bruised ribs. She rests under a tree not knowing she is on private property. She does not speak English well. Only speaking fluent Spanish.
Travis left home at 14 to get away from his abusive father. He travels all over Texas working in ranches to get by until he makes it as a successful cowboy in the rodeo circuit. He buys a rundown ranch and brings it back to profit, especially because he found oil on his property so now he is pretty well off. He has farm hands/foremen and they are the ones that find Selena.
The foremen mistaken Selena as a boy because she is dressed like one, hiding her long hair in a hat. She does this to ward off men. She lies and says that her name is Manuel. But the moment Travis sees her, he knows. It was kind of lust at first sight for both, but mostly him then her.
Travis the H has her taken to his house because he says while he trust his foremen, the ranch is far from town and there aren't women around so he is afraid they will mistreat her. The moment she is in his home, he is very demanding. He tells her not to leave the house. The h doesn’t want to be a freeloader, so she works by making him meals and doing the laundry. He tries to buy her clothes, but she won't accept charity so they compromise by her becoming his housekeeper and she can't leave until she learns English online which he pays for.
Travis does not know how to express emotion or love so he keeps screwing up with Selena and ends up sounding mean and grumpy. This is pretty much the basis of the plot. The H and h dancing around each other. She was raised in a religious background and was told to keep her virginity until marriage. The H is lusting pretty hard for her. They do a lot of kissing, but the h always push back once the H push for more. He wants to be respectful of that so they end up marrying. But he starts to feel guilty because he feels he forced her into it.
The foremen end up respecting and caring for h because she is so nice and she bakes them treats. Travis finds out she is looking for her grandparents so he secretly hires a PI to find them. He eventually finds them, but the grandfather has passed and grandmother is still alive. She is very wealthy.
What I like:
1. I love the interaction between Selena and Travis. It was cute how grumpy he was and how hard it was for him to show emotion. It was a bit of a whiplash because he would be nice one minute and grumpy the next. I know I only listed one thing I like, but their interactions cover the entire book. There was not a scene that did not include them and no side characters storylines.
What I did not like:
1. This is so minor, but I wished Travis hired someone to cook for his foremen. One of his foremen, Slim, was the cook and he could only cook three things. Before Selena, Slim's cooking was all Travis ate, but then Selena feed him real meals and I thought it was selfish that Travis couldn't extend the same thing to his foremen. They live in a bunkhouse and is miles away from town. Selena bakes them treats and one scene had her teaching Slim to cook a meal, but that was it.
2. The last half of the book, the foremen were never mentioned again and that was weird because Selena had grown close to at least 2 of them, especially Juan since he was the only one who spoke Spanish. I hate this kind of inconsistency.
3. I felt bad for the youngest foreman, Clinton. He crushed on Selena and Travis was pretty mean to him. I wish I had known how he ended up at the end.
4. There were no details about why her American father raised the family in Mexico and why he was not in communication with her grandparents in the United States. There were no details on why her family was killed by the drug cartels. She mentioned briefly how she was raised, but there were barely any details on how she was with her family. Her brother was barely mentioned. It was also mentioned, they were wealthy when they were in Mexico so I didn't understand why she was so broke. Yes, she was escaping the cartels, but it just didn't make sense the wealth was all gone without explanation. I just see this as lazy writing not to provide some plausibility and details.
5. Now to the caveat I mentioned above on why I am iffy about saying I really like this book:
5A. The author generalized Mexico. She didn't name a town that the h was escaping from that had been overran by drug cartels. She just kept saying h was escaping Mexico. She said Mexico as in the whole country was dangerous and full of drug cartels. That is a dangerous stereotype and misconception.
5B. There was an overemphasis of the whiteness of the h's skin. Whenever the H mentions her beauty, he keeps stating that she had creamy, milky, pale white skin. It was uncomfortable. There is a paragraph that is questionable to me:
"Travis skimmed the papers and looked at her in dismay. Her last name was Taylor.
Selena Taylor. She didn't even hold a Spanish surname. It was a good last name.
Simple. American. Her father was Anglo. A white, American citizen. That must be where she inherited the pale, ivory skin tone. Relief passed through him. She also had an American passport and social security number."
So, he said her last name was a good last name because it was not Spanish? Was he relieved that, even though she was half Mexican, her features were more white?
A few pages later, Selena accuses him of hating her because she is Mexican and he said no, that's not why.
I am left confused and uncertain what the author was trying to convey, but it sounds microaggressive to me.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
"He liked it best when she was glued to his side, barefoot in his kitchen or naked in his bed."
I didn’t know if I was back in the dark ages or in the present world, it was so backwards for the most part they live the life in the present day but their actions were so medieval in their actions and words. For most of the book Selena was too busy protecting her virginity, the one thing she can give to her future husband, while the Cowboy spent most of the book acting like a petulant child who got his candy taken away. Sadly this story is my least favorite from the author, I like her style and her other books, but this one just wasn’t for me.
Short, steamy story with a ridiculously OTT H. He sees the h and loses his mind. He a walking trope, knows nothing of love just knows he in lust with her. She's frightened of everything at first but of course she falls in love, very quickly. Nice epilogue.

This is the first book that I've read by this author and I'll probably read more. I think this one was supose to be erotic, and for some it might be but to me it felt like I was reading a Diana Palmer book with a bit more discriptive sex scenes.
Selena (h) had lost her family to the drug wars a violence sweeping through Mexico. She had no one left to stay for and knowing that she had grandparents in Texas she sets off,on foot, to go and find them. With only a small amount of American dollar's in her pocket and the Texas heat wheighing on her, she soon discovers just how had and impossible her plan had been. And then she runs into trouble....
Travis (H) runs his own ranch and after years of hard work and hardship he finally has his land/ranch and plenty of money. One day one of his ranch hands finds him and tells him that he needs to come and see this young boy that they found under a tree on the ranch, he was injured and they thought he may be an illegal.
Selena didn't mean to pass as a boy but with all of these men around her she felt it was the safest thing to do. If only she hadn't gotten beaten up she wouldn't be in this mess. When Travis takes a look at the "boy" he's not fooled for a second but he goes along with it till his men go on about their business.
The more time he spends with her the more he knows that he will do what ever he has to to keep her, she's his now whether she knows it or not.
This was a sweet five star read for me. I’d been down and gutted and trudging along my days for weeks now and this book put me right up! LC’s alpha heroes are the stuff dreams are made of.
Book wasn’t short and as always, it was well written and indulgent. The story was sweet and OTT. Travis was a bullish grumpy alpha who had not a single tender bone in his body seemingly. Once he meets Selena, he totally comes to his knees.
Selena doesn’t speak much English but she was a smart woman. She was half Mexican and her mama had certainly ingrained some old-school, timeless qualities in a woman who wants marriage and a family. She remembers those even in her challenging circumstances and only draws Travis in. He can’t but help fall for her innocence and sweetness.
The epilogue was sweet and that visit from the skunk family was that cherry on top. I could use some Travises in my life!
I really liked this book. It wasn't very long but still packed a punch. I've discovered that Lynda Chance's heroes are WAY OVER THE TOP Alpha males and I love them all! FYI - Nice amount of "scorching" sex.
i realy liked the Country feel the cute animals and though im not the bigest Douchbug fan i liked the romance to its my first Lynda chance book and i think ill read her other but i generaly like more angs and plot twists
