Senior and science nerd, Beechum Finch, has enjoyed most of his high school experience, save for one small part, Marlowe Craig. Marlowe, a defense end on the football team, is the school bully and he has made Beechum’s life miserable going on four years now. Hudson Gudmani, a fellow defensive end on the team, has a secret. He has become enamored with Beechum Finch for an entirely different reason and one night at Riverplace Pizza he decides to pursue it. What happens as a result changes everyone’s life.
Terrible.
This was a great story buttttt I didn't enjoy the writting style and things went really slow at times. The end was totally rushed and not very believable.
I don't know if the author has other books or not but I think they have a great career ahead of them with some practice.
I really enjoyed this story. I loved the characters Beechum & Hudson, along with their close social circle of friends. What awesome parents, except for the religious homophobic mother, but every good story needs a villian. Well this ended up having multiple villians, ones that you could truly dislike, and it made the story even better. I did think it jumped to quickly at the finish, but that ended up being rectified in the sequel - Standing strong. Well done to Benton on a wonderful creation that I really enjoyed
Simply written. Pleasant coming out story. Nothing particularly new genre-wise, but I still enjoyed the characters. Would definitely recommend if you like coming out stories.
Very nice book to read. Quite fun and easy-to-read story I found.
There are a lot of dialogues throughout the book. I like it as it creates a stronger bonds with the characters.
From a story point of view, the events leading to the end were a bit unrealistic and rushed... Felt like unfinished.
But it doesn't bother me that much as the rest of the book is very enjoyable.
It was a sweet love story and I really the different characters personalities. I found maybe too easy the acceptance level of their entourage even at school. But it doesn't impact too much the appreciation I have for the book.
It is not a deep philosophical book, and so it must be read, with a light head.
It was a very entertaining and it will leave you with a smile on your face once you finish the book.
I've never read a book where the last chapter (before the epilogue) ended in such a fashion. It was like a slap in the face. I really like the story of these 2 boys. And that's what they really were, boys. I don't think I have met an 18 year old who thought with so much depth like Hudson. Also, the comment with doodling hearts and picking china? Hmmm.... Still a feel good story.... they were so in love for such young age but yet so mature about it. Where did these names come from? Beechum, Datha, Valmont, Valoria, Levaada, Canary..... and they're in Washington D.C.?
As others have mentioned, I too thought that the pacing was up and down. But mostly, I'm a little conflicted about the ending. Throughout the book the author does a great job as portraying gay as okay, but in the end one of the three gay characters turns psycho; I don't understand the negative portrayal at the very end. However, overall I did enjoy the book.

I enjoyed this coming-of-age and coming-out story. It's a bit more of a fairytale than some coming-of-age books, but it's a very fun read with very likable characters. Just a couple too many typos for my taste, but I can overlook such things when I'm rewarded with a good story of loving gay characters growing up together. I recommend Common Ground.
What a wonderful feel good story, it was sad that the book had to end. I would recommend this book to gay males dealing with coming out issue. 5 stars was actually not appropriate but it would not let me give 10 A must read, Douglas, Canby, Oregon USA
