I thought this was an excellent overview of different ethical systems. This lived up to my expectations. The authors obviously couldn't cover every ethical system ever devised, but I think they laid a really good groundwork to help me study some of these philosophers further.

(Philosophy for Dummies was a disappointment in that it was not so much an overview of philosophical thinking as it was a particular philosopher's argument for why the reader should choose his philosophical view. The authors of Ethics for Dummies had opinions that sometimes showed through, but I felt they were much more academic in their approach, giving you the information that you could utilize for developing your own judgment on those systems.)

A really good introduction to the complicated issues of Ethics. By the end of this book I felt I had just touched the tip of the iceberg. Ethics is not an easy subject and just as you think you understand something comes along and pulls the rug out. The writers have done an excellent job and draw you in but they also don't dumb it down for you and your brain has to do some major work. I understood about 40% of this subject bit intend to return to it again.

Made me think
Hard going for someone with no background in the field but at the same time that was kinda the point 😅. I think you have your thinking head on and be be prepared to read 📚 parts multiple times if you want the best experience.

I will freely admit that I am the type of person whose eyes gloss over when philosophical discussions start getting technical. I also tend to quickly get bored by what I often see as semantic quibbles. Thus, Ethics for Dummies has two things going for it, for a reader like me. It's an engaging read, and it focuses on ethics, the most practical branch of philosophy.

The bulk of this book is devoted to an overview of different ethical theories. I cannot vouch for the correctness since, as mentioned above, my eyes tend to glaze over at most presentations of ethics, but the book did provide a thorough, if rudimentary, introduction to major categories of ethical theories including: virtue ethics, utilitarian ethics, ethics of principle (primarily Kant's categorical imperative), social contract theories of ethics, golden rule / common sense ethics, and feminist care ethics. These descriptions were quite useful, and encouraged me to think more deeply about the basis of my personal system of ethics.

The final part of the book, the ethical case studies, was vaguely interesting, but fairly shallow for anyone who has thought about any of the cases brought up in more than passing detail. What I would love to have seen -- although I freely admit it would have prevented their ability to cover so much ground -- is looking at each issue through the lens of each of the major ethical theories presented in the book.

I am quite happy I read this book, and will likely read it again eventually to solidify the ideas I gleaned from it.

It is what it is. An excellent beginners guide to Ethics, but also reflected how ethics are inextricably related to philosophy. For someone who loves philosophy, but hates bullshit. The Dummies books are excellent in bring things to my level of understanding.

As any "for dummies" book, "ethics for dummies" provide a very solid base in order to grasp multiple ethical theories. The authors do not take a stance on any theory, but give the reader both sides to each theory.
