Pat Sheehy, a twelve-year old girl, recounts her journey from Baltimore, MD back to her home in Asheville, NC after the American Civil War. Along the way, she befriends a Union Soldier, Daniel Burgess, and together their perspectives paint a picture of the Civil War and its aftermath. Pat meets characters who exhibit unusual hospitality, even when there was very little to share. Daniel retells life as an Army Chaplain through his diary, imbuing the realities of war. Although Daniel is older and may seem wiser, it is Pat who teaches us how to remain hopeful when all seems lost.
What a charming book. The author had a very comforting cadence & writing style. The interesting pairing & perspectives of the young girl & ‘her soldier’ left me wanting to know/read more. Easy read- 100% worth it.
