She came to this city for a fresh start. She found a dead man in a back alley instead.
One wrong turn puts her face-to-face with an execution she was never meant to see. Guns, blood, a cold voice ordering someone’s death—and a pair of icy eyes that brush over the shadows where she’s hiding.
She runs. She scrubs the memory from her skin. She tells herself to forget and stay quiet.
But silence doesn’t pay the bills. Desperate for a job, she applies to a secretive private company and lands an interview with its ruthless young boss—a man who rules his world like a king and wears violence like a second suit.
She doesn’t recognize him right away. He recognizes her instantly.
To the heir of a brutal crime empire, she’s two the enemy’s sheltered heiress… and the only witness to a murder he ordered.
He should eliminate the problem. Instead, he hires it. Keeps her close. Watches her flinch at loud noises and bite back questions. Every order he gives is a of her loyalty, her fear, and the dark, undeniable pull between them.
She needs this job. He needs her obedience. And the more she learns about the man behind the empire, the harder it becomes to decide which is more dangerous—his world… or his touch.
Ruthless Heir is a steamy, suspenseful dark mafia romance with a morally gray heir obsessed with revenge, a good girl witness trapped inside the lion’s den, forced proximity at the office, family secrets, and an enemies-to-lovers obsession that tastes a lot like ruin.
Oh, golly gee... Yeah, this one's not for me. Not sure what made this dark in the mind of the author or the publisher... Definitely not the banter or inner dialogue, that's for sure. Made it to chapter 5 and wanted to break my kindle.
Ruthless Heir by Valeria Sloane is the kind of dark romance that grabs you by the throat from page one and refuses to let go—equal parts heart-pounding tension, forbidden chemistry, and emotional unraveling you feel in your bones.
Aubrey comes to the city with nothing but a suitcase, a plan, and a desperate need to outrun the life she left behind. She’s focused, cautious, and determined to start over… until one wrong turn drops her into the middle of a brutal execution.
A gun. A body. A cold voice giving the kill order.
And a pair of icy eyes that slice right through the shadows where she’s hiding.
She runs—because what else can anyone do when death looks right at them?
But survival isn’t simple. Rent is due, her savings are almost gone, and the only interview she can land is at a private company that practically screams danger from its locked glass doors.
Aubrey thinks this job might be her lifeline. She doesn’t realize she’s stepping right back into the lion’s den.
Because her new boss? Killz—the ruthless heir to a crime empire. The same man she saw order a death in that alley.
She doesn’t recognize him at first. He recognizes her instantly.
And that’s where the tension becomes addictive.
Killz should eliminate the loose end. That’s what the heir of a criminal dynasty would normally do. Instead, he hires her. Tests her. Watches her with a precision that feels like possession. He calls her out on her lies, pushes at her fear, and pulls her deeper into a world built on secrets and loyalty—and he does it with the slow, deliberate intensity of a man who always gets what he wants.
Aubrey needs this job to survive. Killz needs her obedience to keep his empire controlled. But neither of them are prepared for the magnetic pull between them—dark, reckless, and impossible to ignore.
What makes this story so captivating is how human both of them are beneath the danger:
❤️ Aubrey, terrified but brave, fighting for a life that keeps slipping through her fingers. ❤️ Killz, ruthless on the outside but tragically wounded beneath the armor he never removes. ❤️ The way he watches her flinch, not because he enjoys fear—but because he wants to be the one she finally stops running from. ❤️ The way she sees the man behind the violence, no matter how much he tries to stay hidden.
This is a dark romance that doesn’t rely on just the aesthetic. It goes deeper—into trauma, power, trust, obsession, and the kind of tension that simmers until it threatens to combust.
If you love: 🔥 morally gray crime lords 🔥 fierce heroines who refuse to break 🔥 “I should kill you but I’m keeping you instead” energy 🔥 forced proximity in an office dripping with danger 🔥 forbidden attraction that turns into something neither expected
…then Ruthless Heir will devour you.
Aubrey and Killz aren’t just drawn to each other—they’re each other’s destruction and salvation. And watching that unfold is pure, addictive perfection.

## 💔 **Hard to Connect, Even With Some Strong Moments**
I really could not connect with this one. The FMC was okay—written as naïve at times, but still strong in her convictions, which I appreciated. And thankfully, no instalove 🙌. She did stand her ground when she needed to, which helped.
The MMC, though… whew 😬 he was a hot mess for me. The first 50% of the book is him consumed with revenge for the death of his family, blaming the FMC’s father. Killz was harsh with everyone—his brothers, Aubrey, literally anyone in his orbit. Aubrey gets hired without realizing she’s part of his revenge plan, and the dynamic with her cousin Alessa definitely feels like setup for the next book.
What completely threw me was how suddenly he decided she was “his.” I expect that in mafia romance 💀❤️, but this had zero buildup. Then we get the tragic ex backstory, and the way he turned on Aubrey after that? Yikes. The things he said weren’t protective—they were just hurtful. I needed *way* more groveling from him.
The plot does pick up around the 60% mark, but I still found myself skimming. It had tropes I typically enjoy, but the execution just didn’t land for me.

This story features character stumbling into a murder, leading to unexpected twists. Aubrey and Killz are compelling, adding spice to the thrilling narrative. He knows he should leave her, but he can't; she's always on edge. I was hooked when she unknowingly worked for him, the villain. Their intense attraction was electrifying. I loved every minute of this story!
Aubrey and Killz made the best characters for this spicy and hot story. This had twists and turns all over. He should rid himself of her but he can’t. She’s always looking over her shoulder. It grabbed me when she ended up working for him and didn’t even realize he was the bad guy. But their attraction was intense. Their pull to one another was hot. I absolutely loved every minute of this story.
