Atlas has grown used to a simple life, one not uncommon to many Zin. He lives in the mines illegally farming minerals for profit under the watchful eye of Granite. Despite the lack of memories, he lives in accepted ignorance, careful to hide what makes him the ability to feel and manipulate matter. That is, until the political uprisings begin.

Selena leads her people, disgraced by war and forgotten by history. The Sarvum are near the edge of becoming obsolete. In a desperate final move to save her kind, she plots to overthrow the powers that be. If all goes according to plan, she will lead her people to power once more. There's a catch. To do so, she must resurrect a man the system hoped was buried forever and convince him to fight for her cause.

Atlas and Selena stand on opposite sides of the entanglement; victory could mean the saving or annihilation of the galaxy. The alliance is in turmoil, the balance of power is broken, and the dead will come back to hunt the living. Somewhere between lost memories and destiny, the past is clawing its way back.

This is book one of the Failed Extinction Trilogy.

Failed extinction follows the life of Atlas, an illegal silver miner. He’s always known something’s been different about him, but he never realized how much. His normal everyday life becomes disrupted and changes in an instant when an unlikely companion, Nova, enters his life. As he slowly starts to discover who he really is and what it means he becomes entangled with the usurper Selena, on her own mission to take back a world and system that she feels has unjustly left her, and her kind in the dust and disgraced.

This action packed book really keeps the flow of the book moving. I really enjoyed the creativity and uniqueness behind Atlas’s abilities. This book really ended on a high note making me wanting more. My only critique would be that there’s a little too much actual explaining of things that I think the reader could have been shown through writing instead. Huge thank you the Kyle and Green Avenue Publishing for giving me the opportunity to be a beta reader. I’m very excited to see where Altas and Selena take us in the books to follow!

Failed Extinction: Death of a System

Set across multiple vivid worlds, Failed Extinction: Death of a System had me on the edge of my seat from the very first page! I genuinely felt like I was sharing the adrenaline rush alongside the characters. When I closed the book, my first thought was, “Oh wow… here we go!”

One of the novel’s greatest strengths is its character connections. The relationships formed throughout the story were deeply moving, and the dynamic between the primary group: Atlas, Anita, Nova, and Granite was pure gold! Their banter was sharp, natural, and incredibly enjoyable. I was also unexpectedly charmed by some of the creatures introduced; they added heart and warmth in all the right ways.

Nova, in particular, stood out to me. Though her vocation presents her as polished and structured, she remains wonderfully human, quirky, emotionally layered, sometimes grounded yet slightly chaotic in the most endearing way! I absolutely fell in love with her character.

The pacing of the novel was steady and intentional, never rushed and never dragging. As someone who appreciates rhythm in storytelling, I found the flow especially satisfying. While the book shifts between multiple character narratives, I found it easy to follow. At times, I was more drawn to certain storylines than others, but as the plot progressed, I became equally invested in each perspective!

Visually, this book is cinematic. I am very detail-oriented and thrive on strong imagery, and the author executed his world beautifully. Even the inner dialogues and physiological responses added depth without overwhelming the narrative. The balance between science, action, emotion, and world-building felt thoughtful and immersive!

Beyond the action, this story left me reflecting on the essence of family, who we claim, who claims us, and how we might endure under impossible circumstances like those these characters face.

If you enjoy sci-fi and fantasy with rich world-building, high-stakes action, layered characters, and touches of romance, this is absolutely a series you want to read!

As for a small note: there are quite a few races introduced throughout the story, and at times (especially mid-book), I found myself flipping to the glossary to keep everything straight. The glossary was very helpful, and by the latter half, I felt much more confident tracking them. That said, the depth and diversity of the world is also part of what makes it feel so expansive and ambitious!

Overall, I am thoroughly impressed and genuinely excited to see where this series goes next. This was a bold, cinematic start, and I’ll absolutely be continuing the journey. I cannot wait to see what unfolds! Kyle did a phenomenal job!

Failed Extinction: Death of a System follows Atlas and Selena on opposite sides of an interplanetary war that is only just beginning. This easy-to-read and exciting book kicks off a series I can't wait to finish!

Right from the beginning, the book immerses you in its rich lore, which Voss masterfully integrates with a story that's both engaging and heartwarming, leaving you smiling and unexpectedly moved at various chapter endings. The way characters are contextualised helps immerse the reader in a world of planetary struggles and political machinations, which I'm absolutely hoping to see more of. With a variety of action scenes, this story will pull you in and leave you biting your nails, hoping your favourites make it out at the end.

Throughout the first book, you can expect relatable characters, stellar dynamics, a two-sided conflict, and a setting that is so immersive it'll leave you yearning once you have to leave it again. And it is this which also coincides with my personal favourite parts of the book. I found the setting captivating, along with its subtle magic system, which promises further intrigue in future releases. Character dynamics, especially between Atlas and Anita, are strong and leap off the page. The addition of Selena's point of view was a great choice, as it ensured the conflict remained intricate and multifaceted rather than being reduced to something basic; and I am excited to further see her side of things complicate the bloody war that is to come. Character voices remained strong throughout and showed powerful signs of development, making me excited to see where they will end up.

My main feedback concerns some sentence structures or moments that lean too heavily on telling rather than showing, and occasionally feel redundant or repetitive in my reading. That said, in no way did this spoil the fun I experienced with this book, and I expect most readers to have no issue with it!

In short, Failed Extinction: Death of a System starts a series I'm eagerly awaiting more of and would absolutely recommend to any fans of SFF who are looking for an epic and emotional read!

Kyle was kind enough to give me an ARC copy of this book, but the above review is entirely honest! On a more personal note, Kyle Voss is a great indie author whom I'm happy to call a friend, and who has written a splendid book. To support him, check out his book and make sure to review and share it with your friends!

What a fun, original read! I was given an arc of this book for an honest review so here it is:

From the first page, this book gripped me. It is filled to the brim with whacky characters, found family, and a political coup. This story primarily follows a 2 people, a man named Atlas and a woman named Selena, with a few other perspectives thrown in. Atlas doesn't remember his past. All he knows is life in the mine that adopted him, and he's content living there beneath the ground. All that changes when a runaway politician crashes (quite literally) into his life and together with his friend, they join her in running from the people chasing her.

Selena is the more antagonistic force in this book. She comes from the planet Savrum and is a member of the council for the interplanetary alliance. The Savrum people are known for their violent nature and as such are on the bottom of the totem pole in the alliance. The only reason they're still on it is because of their main export, battery fuel used to speed up space travel from multiple decades to a couple of minutes. But when the council starts discussing adding Earth to the alliance, Selena feels as if her people are being phased out. Instead of allowing that to happen, she takes matters into her own hands. I won't say much more to avoid spoilers, but let me tell you Selena's side of the plot really reels you in.

The characters themselves are exceptionally written. They all have unique personalities and voices and they are so fun to watch bounce off each other. The relationships are great as well. This book is full of pure platonic friendships that are so refreshing to read.

I can't wait to continue this series!

Failed Extinction: Death of a System by Kyle Voss completely pulled me in.

Set in a fractured galaxy where political systems are collapsing and entire civilizations are fighting not to be erased, this story feels both expansive and intimate. The worldbuilding is layered with rebellion, buried history, and the quiet tension of a universe on the brink.

But what truly stayed with me were the characters.

Atlas, carrying lost memories and a power he barely understands.
Selena, fierce and desperate to save her people from extinction.

They stand on opposite sides of something inevitable, and you can feel the weight of every decision they make.

The side characters deserve honorable mentions too. They aren’t just there to fill space. Each one adds texture to the world and emotional weight to the story, making the stakes feel real and lived-in rather than distant or abstract.

I loved these characters. Their pain felt real. Their determination felt earned. The emotional impact sneaks up on you and lingers long after you close the book.

This isn’t just about war or systems failing. It’s about identity, sacrifice, and what it costs to fight for a future when the past has already taken so much.

This debut has heart, ambition, and teeth. I’m genuinely excited to see where this trilogy goes next.

ARC.

Failed Extinction: Death of a System delivers original sci-fi with multiple interesting POVs. I was given the opportunity to read an advanced copy by the author (thanks, Kyle!).

First of all, the setting and fully alien cast was fascinating. Not something I see/read often, but I loved it! Atlas makes a compelling protagonist, and Selena's scheming will have you hooked at every turn. The supporting cast carry their weight and add interesting dimensions to this sci-fi adventure. Atlas and co. have some sweet, dare I say cozy found family moments while on the run, and Selena will give you your fill of political intrigue. I would go so far as to say Selena really drives the story, which creates an interesting and unexpected dynamic with our heroes.

My only comments have to do with pacing. At first, it wasn’t clear to me how Atlas and Selena’s very different POVs would connect. I also wish a certain someone had crashed into Atlas’ life earlier, as that was when the plot really kicked off for me.

Overall, this is a great galaxy-spanning debut, and I’m intrigued to see how the story continues!

Failed Extinction: Death of a System by Kyle Voss is a really compelling read. I was drawn in by two intertwining storylines and found myself deeply attached to the characters. Some are complex, even polarizing, and that made me want to know exactly where they’d go next. I genuinely couldn’t put it down, and I felt so deeply for these characters as their journeys unfolded.

What really stood out for me was the theme of found family, it gave the story so much heart, and I loved seeing how these connections shaped them. The humour was also perfectly timed and added a lightness that balanced the heavier moments beautifully. Even before I reached the final pages, I already knew it would be hard having to wait for book two!

I feel honoured that I had the opportunity to read an ARC of this story. Having connected with Kyle online and seeing his book come to life makes it even more special. I’m so proud of what he’s created here and I would highly recommend it!

Failed Extinction is the first of a trilogy, and did not disappoint! The story begins with a rough miner, who stumbles across a strange boy. Moved by sympathy and maybe relatability, he takes the boy in his arms— not knowing this simple act would change the future of their universe. The author does an amazing job developing the characters and balancing between view points. He makes it very clear when it’s in another characters perspective, making the transitions feel natural— something not many authors are capable of. Though it is part of a set, the story did not feel incomplete. I have some closer, yet there are a few mysteries left to make me want to know more.
Overall, the story was exciting, flowed well, and left me feeling both satisfied but craving for more.

Failed extinction is a fast-paced (super quick read!) action packed sci fi with elements of fantasy and magic, lots of emotional turmoil, and shifting politics at a galactic level.
It's very enjoyable and has moments of laughing out loud and very unexpected twists with very nice foreshadowing!

Some of the characters are very likeable and have a very interesting dynamic.

I'd recommend this book for late Young Adult audiences that enjoy hand to hand fights, mysteries, found family, and even a little romance.

It left me missing the characters. Even the villain!!

Death of a system is a wonderful introduction into what is sure to be an epic trilogy. It's fun, fast paced with a true and typical sense of good Vs evil right from the start.
The characters are easy to love, and easy to hate in terms of their ability to make you feel strongly for their decisions.
It's a great start with a strong ending to book one. Excited for the next one!

ARC review!

This book was excellent. It was heartfelt, funny, the stakes were high, and I was kept throughly entertained and guessing what would happen next. I’ve read some great indie books and some not-so-great indie books, and this one is absolutely worth reading!

Exciting debut and a digestible beginning to an original, multi-pov SFF trilogy, Failed Extinction: Death of a System is packed with immersive, colorful world-building, political intrigue, power plays, and dynamic characters that will stay with you long after the final chapters.

This is just the beginning, and I cannot wait for the sequel!

Many thanks to Kyle Voss for the ARC! All thoughts, opinions, and critiques are my own.

(My review contains no spoilers.)

Failed Extinction examines a fractured planetary system and the choices opposing characters have to make to ensure their survival and the continuation of their planets and species. Featuring a character-driven plot that moves at an addictive pace, I was sucked into a reality that I did not want to leave.

Captivating villains with conflicting morals and a dark history are balanced with found-family and heart-warming moments that left me both laughing and crying. I loved switching between perspectives and all the emotions that came with knowing what’s coming and waiting for it to make its way across the galaxies.

Even though Earth has yet to enter into this planetary alliance, Failed Extinction is filled with resonating humanity and validating mental health representation that left me feeling seen.

Especially for fans of the political exploration and inventive worlds of STAR WARS and the character development and pacing of Arcane, though I would definitely recommend this to all who love escaping into novels of intriguing sci-fi and fantasy!
