A BBC Radio and press featured author Mike writes very well received fast moving thrillers which are packed with action and are short on flowery prose. The series all feature a lead character called Max Thatcher, an ex Special Forces operative who takes no prisoners.

Written for you to enjoy on a flight, by the pool or to break up the monotony of the daily commute. Not suited for under 18's nor those wanting an early night as readers complain they can't put them down!

Adventure number three for Max and his team and it really feels as though I now know the characters. But, there are enough new additions in each novel to keep the series fresh and exciting. Max was darker in this book, as spotted by FBI agent Gina Bourne, but he needed to be, in facing the dark and evil world of wanton and brutal terrorism. The temptation for Mr Smart, might have been to expose the reader to a stereotypical terrorist group. He chooses otherwise, and really captures the randomness and inexplicable nature of the beast, which is not always about religion or politics; sometimes it is simply about love, hate and revenge.
These books are just so current and unpredictable....they just end too soon. Good job 'A Dragon's Ransom' is out and available......Triads,drugs and more....just about to order it!

This third in the Max Thatcher series is another gripping plot that races along and doesn't let you put the book down until the final page. With surprising twists and turns, there is adventure on every page. It is ideal for a holiday read - and should be a Hollywood blockbuster! It would make James Bond and Mission Impossible look dated.

5.0 out of 5 stars Max goes from strength to strength!, 21 Mar 2014

This is the third Max Thatcher novel from Mike Smart and in my view is the best so far.

Mr Smart has slowed the pace slightly this time around and the result is spectacular. As terrorists plan and carry out their increasingly desperate and vicious acts of violence, Max and his trusted team race against time to try and stop them.

As the pressure builds you are totally drawn into this shadowy world of terrorism and counter terrorism, turning each page with trepidation at what might be about to happen next.

Well crafted and with his usual penchant for sticking to what's important whilst resisting the need to pad out with the overly high levels of detail like many of his peers, Mike Smart continues to carve his own path with increasing skill and certainly delivers the goods.

Make sure you have read the previous novels first, and then make sure you are comfortable before you start. The hours will fly by!

"Without Warning" is a fast-paced, action-paced thriller that begins when an American B52 discharges its payload over disputed lands, spawning a terrorist who waits fifteen years for revenge.
As the story unfolds terrorist attacks are reported in Britain, Paris and America all with devastating consequences and loss of life. As the government bureaus rally and investigate the crimes, British Admiral Gordon Walker recruits Max Thatcher and the Falcon Services team to search for the identity of the culprits. Cleverly Max begins to unearth clues that may not only lead to the terrorists, but be linked to a powerful political figure in the British Government.

Mike Smart weaves threads of a plot that spans Boston, Paris and London as one man and his deluded accomplice seek to bring death and destruction to the foreign infidels who brought oppression instead of freedom to his people. Well-written, the narrative is emotionally- charged and riveting as the pain, suffering and death inflicted has become intensely personal not only to the populace, government officials and law enforcement officers, but to the terrorists who call themselves freedom fighters.

Like the plot the characters are well-developed, realistic and complex. Max Thatcher, haunted by the sudden death of his lover struggles with a darkness that seems to smother him at times. Keeping a low social profile he thrusts himself into a new job;his friendly, tough guy persona submerged under his brutal, cold-hearted tactics. The former Special Boat Service Operative is more dangerous than he's ever been before. His friend and mentor, Admiral Gordon Walker is a shrewd innate leader with a calm but forceful personality. Gina Bourne, the American FBI analyst is not only attractive, but quiet, confident and gutsy. But of all the characters it's the antagonists that add passionate fire to the narrative; like the immoral German explosives dealer; the highly intelligent, manipulative and scheming television newscaster; the warped, weak and hot-tempered lobster boat owner and the heartless, psychopathic radical.

"Without Warning" keeps you on the edge of your seat from the beginning to its explosive ending. I highly recommend it to those who love a thrilling rollercoaster ride.
