PsiKnight's Vow: A Sci-Fi Romance

Rate this book
After barely escaping a kidnapping, Lady Qhisa Bai spends time hiding her scars, shunning people and turning to the quiet company of sacred books. Yet, when the quiet librarian learns that her beloved sister is engaged to a brutal warlord for political reasons, Qhisa vows to do whatever it takes to save her, even if it means forcing a pilot to sneak her off the planet so she can assume her sister’s place.

Powerful and restless, PsiKnight Lucas Lin is aggravated that his leaders sentenced him to protect a bunch of dusty books because of a justified crime. Yet, the playboy turned bounty hunter cannot resist learning more about Qhisa, the dark-eyed beauty who chastises him at every turn. But when Lucas learns the scarred noblewoman has poisoned him to hijack his spacejet, he reluctantly agrees to her terms, while plotting how to save Qhisa.

Despite their undeniable attraction that leaves her aching for more, Qhisa has promised to save her planet by marrying another. And even though Lucas fears pushing her away, he refuses to take the antidote if it means letting her go.

With millions of lives at stake, can this couple decide which to sacrifice…the fate of two planets or their hearts?

PsiKnight’s Vow is the steamy second book in the PsiKnights science-fiction romance series. If you like forbidden love, plenty of banter, and unique cultures across the galaxy, then you’ll relish Amara Yan’s page-turning adventure. This can be read as a standalone novel too.

I received this book as an ARC. Thank you for the opportunity to read and review.

PsiKnight's Vow is the second book in the PsiKnights series by Amara Yan. While I did not read the first book, I never felt as if I was missing something crucial in the elaborate world created. We are introduced to several characters, including reintroduction to the main characters of the first book. Recaps of the notable events of the first book are periodically mentioned, so that the reader has some background information.

PsiKnight's Vow tells the story of Lady Qhisa Bai and her endeavors to save her sister from a loveless marriage arrangement. Leaving her quiet life as a librarian, she poisons PsiKnight Lucas Lin, one of the guards at the Codexium, and hijacks his Lurker in order to sneak off planet. During their journey, we learn more about each character and watch their feelings for one another grow. The story is action packed, mixed with affectionate banter and intimate moments.

Intermingled with Qhisa and Lucas's perspectives in the book are two additional characters' narratives, Reid and Naiman's. Their exploits happen concurrently with Qhisa and Lucas's, and Amara Yan manages to skillfully merge their storylines together later in the book. It took me some time to understand the flow of the storytelling as I would find myself reading Lucas's point of view, only to jump over to Reid's in the next chapter. While it felt choppy to me at first, it eventually gave me the vibe of the Star Wars movies where we would be watching one event with Han Solo, and then, it would cut over to Luke Skywalker on a completely separate planet (or something similar). Making this association allowed me to understand the overall arrangement of the plot points that Amara Yan was trying to depict. I would only comment that the approach could have been made a little clearer initially. For example, including the existence of Reid in the synopsis of the book would allow the reader to expect multiple point of views.

What I liked:
- The book is very well written, and the characters are engaging
- The banter between Lucas and Qhisa is cute :) " And that's why we should just go back to exchanging withering looks and sharp words."
- We get enough background on the characters to understand how they got where they are today
- I was on team Lucas right away
- There is just the right amount of mystery provided and hints given in the storytelling to allude to future events
- The story overall is enjoyable and moving at times

What I think could be tweaked:
- The pace overall was really smooth, but some of the jumping between characters and certain drawn-out events (e.g Eagle viewing) slowed the pace down and interrupted the flow.
- Some relevant events appear to happen off page (e.g how did she arrange her sister's liberation so quickly?), which I think expanding upon would have contributed to the plot points
- I would have liked more details on how some of the specific items and mechanisms in the world worked (e.g Lucas' charm)
- I want to see more buildup of the feelings between Lucas and Qhisa because I really like the two of them together. However, I felt that some of their moments seemed unrealistically lovey-dovey and cheesy without more development.

Lastly, having no effect on my rating, I would have liked to have the specific character's name listed prior to his or her chapters. I also think a very small glossary on the different planets and inhabitants would be helpful to clarify everyone being introduced.

Tropes:
- Sci-fi Fantasy Romance
- Force Proximity
- Touch Her and Die
- HEA
- One Druku lol

Overall, this was a great book and an interesting read with all the different elements constructed. More people need to be talking about Amara Yan and her writing talent!

It was a cute love story.
I feel like it was a bit confusing on the world terms because I didn't read the first book but overall I could understand what it was about.
Really liked the main characters and how the mmc is obsessed with his strong fmc.
I want to thank the author for sending me an ARC in exchange for an honest review
