Engineered super soldier x assassin with a poison kiss 😘

I thought this was a standalone but it’s actually a duology. I need the next one ASAP!!!!!

This had my jaw dropped when it went from 0-100. They’re lowkey super toxic for each other but OH WELL we love them anyway!!! I’m gonna be thinking about the things Vanguard did for a longggggg while. I mean is he even hot if he’s not unhinged? 😜

10/10 execution of the American gov bashing. In fact I think she should go EVENNNNNN harder in book 2!!! I had to break the fourth wall and stare at the invisible camera multiple times.

This book was such a cool concept and I was entertained the entire time! The ending leaves you wanting more TRUST.

Thank you for this arc!!

ARC review:

When I started this book I only knew the basics, that she was a spy destined to investigate the only person she can’t kill with her kiss, color me impressed because I didn’t expect all the rest.

The world is set not too far apart, in 2040ish, after the dark decade of America, the fall of capitalism, and the rise of fascism, IA, and authoritarianism, and Mia has to check if “America’s superhero” is not a weapon created for the benefit of the corrupted.
The world building is a masterpiece, a mix of our current global situation, and the worst case scenario for the future, and what happens next, when you let people replace humans, and when segregation wins, and there is different kind of people, the important ones and the disposable. This felt too real, so much it gave me chills each time it was mentioned. This book is not an easy read, at least not for the faint of heart, it’s a dystopia/ futuristic setting, but one that feels too real, too close to the real world.
I don’t want to say more of the world due to ✨spoilers✨, but I love how she represented the people, how resilient the citizens were, how even in the worst, they kept fighting.

The characters are another masterpiece, both of them, with flaws that makes them human, even when both of them are “monsters created to kill”. (Not exactly but she is a spy and he a superhero so they indeed, kill some people, usually the “bad” ones.)
Mia is intelligent, witty, and marvellous, you can’t stop feeling what she is feeling, the fear, the hurt, the love, I felt it all and I couldn’t not fall in love with her character.
Nate, oh Nate, the broody superhero that wants to rest a bit, that wants some privacy, and to live, all thanks to her. The way he is everything she needed, someone so obsessed with her, it might be dangerous.
The way they compliment each other, even in their worst, is incredible and sometimes sad, because it feels like they’re doomed. (But I hope they won’t be in the next book?).
Right now I need answers, and the next book too, because that ending was so bittersweet it made me want to cry.
Also the references to avengers at the end? I couldn’t stop laughing.
As a marvel fan, I loved all the superheroes references, and the twilight wink.
In summary, this book is perfect if you love super heroes, captain America but make him broody and billionaire, if you love Wandavision (iykyk), if you love Black Widow but make her a bit Poison Ivy, and dystopian settings.
I couldn’t put it down, and I can’t recommend it more.

Thank you so much Karina Halle for sending me this ARC!

Vanguard is the first book in a Post-Dystopian Dark Romance duet and it’s so different from what I’ve come to expect from Karina (and I’ve been a fan of her work for a few years now) but it’s different in the best way possible, I quickly fell in love with this story and Mia and Vanguard and I need the next book ASAP!

Mia is sent undercover, as a journalist, on a mission to find out whether Vanguard, the first genetically engineered America’s superhero, is the savior everyone thinks he is or a threat. With each interview and the more time they spend together, Mia realizes Vanguard is not who she expected, but with dangerous secrets coming to light about his creators and their company, they need to find out who is the real enemy while fighting their growing feelings for each other.

I’m honestly in awe of this book, the author set this story in year 2040 with so many nods to what is happening right now and I enjoyed discovering her version of the future and that combined with truly fascinating, perfectly paced plot and amazing characters made this book unique and unputdownable, I read it in one sitting and couldn’t put it down. There were a lot of secrets about the Vanguard, the company’s other projects, how the genetical engineering worked but also about true intentions of all the characters and I loved slowly discovering it all and some of the plot twists had me with my jaw on the floor. Mia and Vanguard were incredible MCs, they were both morally grey, really complicated and perfectly imperfect and so interesting, I always love the assassin/spy x target trope and their dynamics were perfect here, I loved seeing them slowly fall for each other despite their reluctance to do so and knowing it’s forbidden and their relationship being messy, but they were incredible together and the spicy scenes had me blushing, I always know Karina is going to deliver when it comes to romance and she never disappoints. I also loved that there were some difficult topics brought up here, both politically but also what it means to be a human, Karina truly outdid herself with this book and I loved everything about it.

Vanguard is a truly amazing book that I definitely recommend to everyone, I loved it so much and am so excited for book 2.

5⭐️ A devastating masterpiece

Sidenote: Given the current state of the world, it is very important to say that many aspects of this story are drawn from the reality we live in. Please take care in reading this knowing that there are many incredibly heavy topics presented.

"This isnt left versus right anymore. It's top versus bottom. And we are very, very far from the top."

The timeline presented in this book shows us a dark future, not too different from the path we currently find ourselves on. In 2040, the world is recovering from the dark decade brought about by political corruption and the worlds elite playing with the lives of civilians like their own games of chess. Though America is presented as being on the mend, MI6 has concerns regarding the new American "superhero" and face of society so they send in a wonderful lethal honeypot to investigate this situation.

To say Mia is lethal puts it politely, yet her ability to maneuver not just the situation presented, but the world at large, given her poison is commendable. We are shown cracks in her armor derived from solitude and having believed she would never enjoy a romantic partner, so when Americas Golden Boy, Vanguard, Nate, comes in and shatters that expectation for her life it throws her entire mission, and her own life, off it's axis.

The dynamic between our Spy and "Hero" was thrilling. Their mistrust conflicts with their desire for each other, which logically evolves as the plot progresses. Despite the length of this novel the pacing remains consistent and easily retains the readers attention as it consistently and logically flows between information and developing conflicts.

ADHD sidebar: Finding out that this takes place in the same universe as Grave Matter had my spiralling.

This conclusion, finding out the big reveal (no, I will definitely not be writing it here, go read the book!) left me shaken. I could never have taken that information as well as either of our MCs did. I am so worried for their future.

I need Safeguard immediately.

"What are we, if not two monsters, two killers, two dark souls looking for the light."

Lads I am internally screaming from this book. Having read the blurb for this book I was still shocked (in the best way) with its contents.

Mia, is an SOE agent who is assigned to assess Vanguard the world’s first superhero, and if deemed a weapon kill him. Her cover story is that she’s a journalist who wants to interview him, her views on him so far have left him wanting more.

Nate is a warn veteran whose world came crumbling down when he lost his sister after she led a protest. He had been away on a Mission and by the time he got back she had been cremated. That’s when Julia found him. A broken man who always just wanted to help.

The story is set in 2040 and based in America with global dynamics as the main company of focus. Meeting Vanguard for the first time in London at a gala, Mia tells him exactly what she thinks which sparks the directors interest.

Julia vanveen is Vanguard’s handler, one who has made him into the monster that lies beneath. When Nate falls for Mia, Julia sees her whole world come crumbling down around her.

Mia is the one person who Nate listens to. Despite Julia interfering.

This book brings all the feels. Drama, suspense, empathy, and a taste of happiness plus it is steamy 🔥

The thought that went into this story is so much more than anything I could have ever dreamed about. Author Karina Halle has knocked this one out of the park. I mean who wouldn’t love a man in a vape who can fly you anywhere? who doesn’t love an enemy to lover story line? Who doesn’t love finding that someone special out of billions of others?

Mia has been lonely for so long. Never been able to have that special someone. Fighting against the electricity with Nate and then when she falls she falls hard. She has well and truly crossed that professional line.

This book will leave you on the edge of your seat. It’s a must read.

Holy Vanguard! It’s about time we got a hero who doesn't just save the day—he completely wrecks your expectations.
If you’re tired of the "status quo" heroes who play by the rules, meet Nate Whitaker. He is the ultimate 21st-century protagonist: dark, dangerous, expertly engineered, and lethally sexy. Honestly? Step aside Superman, Captain America, and Thor. You’ve got nothing on Vanguard.
Imagine the noble heart of Captain America bred with the gritty, visceral, and unapologetic world of The Boys. This book is a masterclass in speculative fiction, blending a high-stakes mystery with non-stop, edge-of-your-seat violence and drama.
Let’s talk about the spice. At a 4/5 chili pepper rating, these scenes are so intense it’s hard to keep a straight face in public. Karina Halle has managed to write romance that feels realistic and fresh without being redundant. And yes—there are a few positions that only a superhuman could pull off, but in this world? It feels completely earned.
The pacing is relentless, the world-building is immersive, and the dialogue is sharp. Karina Halle is truly a master of her craft, delivering a plot with depth that matches its steam.
Don't wait—pre-order Vanguard now! This is the first half of a must-read duet, and while it releases on February 12, I’m already counting down the days until book two, Safeguard, drops later this year.

Thank you so much Karina for the opportunity to review this ARC!

Spoiler free review for my friends who have not read this yet, but absolutely should!

All I can say is WOW! I knew I'd enjoy this book just from reading the description, but Karina blew my mind once again. I always forget how heart-wrenching her stories are until I'm up at 1am with a headache from crying for hours and I still can't put the book down.

If you're looking for pure escapism from the current political climate, this might not be for you, but if you're ready for a no holds barred Handmaid's Tale-esc commentary on the slippery slope of the avalanche we're already falling down, I highly recommend! She does not mince words.

As always, the characters were so well constructed, I felt like I was on the journey with them, and oh what a journey. The parallels to real world events had me so invested in how this story turns out, while also reinforcing the futility of their battle. I shall remain hopeful either way. The thing about Karina's characters is that I know they'll literally alter space and time to stay together, but it's still going to hurt along the way.

Also, side note, as a (non-evil) functional geneticist who would love nothing more than to move to Vancouver Island, Karina has no idea how much I wish these kinds of research facilities existed! I will read anything she puts out in this genre #manifesting.

When I saw this book was a dark, dystopian romance, I immediately knew I was going to read it. Add in the fact that Mia, the FMC is a lethal operative and I was feral to get my hands on this book. I am happy to report this was fantastic!

There are so many parts of this story that are hitting a little too close to reality and that makes this book even more poignant. If anyone ever tells you that reading isn't political, they have no comprehension skills.

I really enjoyed the relationship between Mia and Vanguard and the way it evolves over time. They both have strong internal feelings and conflicts which make them hesitant to get too involved with one another, but they just can't help themselves. The fact that Mia has never been able to be intimate with anyone because her kiss can kill is a trope I have seen before but I think this one is handled well and we get an explanation that is plausible in the end. Also having naughty time while he is in "invisible mode"? Also while flying? New kinks unlocked!

I really didn't know how this book was going to end and let me just say I was not prepared. I cannot wait to see what Karina has in store for these characters next. This book does end on a cliffhanger, but at a good break point. This was a fantastic read and I will be patiently waiting for the next one! 4.5 stars

4.5 ⭐️ rounded to 5

Even though I knew the general description of Vanguard prior to reading, I still wasn't prepared — but in a good way. If you've been reading Karina Halle for a while, you know that she has excellent range. Even though I've read most her backlog, I continue to be impressed when she comes out with something so different. Definitely not one to be stuck to one genre.

I don't think I've ever read a book that gives Captain America x Black Widow vibes but here we are. I love that the hidden identity trope was flipped and she was the badass agent targeting America's superhero, Vanguard. Love the nods to our current dumpster fire and seeing the country trying to rebuild in a futuresque New York was a nice addition given I cannot see beyond this hellscape.

In true Karina Halle fashion — Vanguard is a spiccccccy girl and she's introduced me to scenes I never could have imagined.

Similar to how I felt at the end of Grave Matter, I did NOT see the ending coming. Totally my bad but I also didn't realize this wasn't a standalone and will be anxiously awaiting Safeguard to see how this story evolves. If you like the more paranormal/fantasy side of Halle's work, I would highly recommend picking Vanguard up.

Thank you so much to Karina Halle for providing an early copy of this ebook. All opinions are my own.

😳… what was that?!! This has just about everything that I have been wanting to read in a book recently. Responsibilities? I don’t know her. I didn’t want to stop reading this book at all. I love the superhero aspect of it. Why has it not been done more? Or have it just not found it until now? Either way I just devoured this. The MCs are like Captain America & Black widow but with a darkness. The setting of a not too distant future is a bit unsettling & definitely makes you think.

Mia & Nate were so fun together. How they just would orbit each other & try to set boundaries but obviously they were broken. Just so good. And hot 🥵. I needed to wear like a heart rate monitor or something because I felt like my heart was beating so fast the entire time. I was on edge with what would happen & was so nervous & excited. I swear my heart felt like it was going to burst. Again it was just really hot. The entire time I just kept repeating “hot, HOT, HAAWWT!” like Ruby Rohd. Oh! One of the things I’ve wanted to see in a book is where she says ‘f**k it’ & I just about screamed when I saw it in here.

Karina Halle books are always a good time. I’ve loved every single book I have read & they’re all 5 ⭐️ reads but now this is taking the spot as my number one. I’m so excited for book 2. This was just perfection. I couldn’t put it down & I need a physical copy for my shelf. Amazing. ♾️ ⭐️

This is my favorite kind of book from Karina, and the connection to Grave Matter made so much sense considering that’s my favorite book of hers. Vanguard features a post-dystopian version of America that really hits home with the state of things right now. Set in 2040 after the Dark Decade, Vanguard is acting as America’s real life superhero, and our FMC Mia is sent on a mission to dig deeper into the corporation pulling his strings.

The romance was like nothing I’ve read before - a man genetically modified into a superhero and a British spy/assassin with a poison kiss. Nate or “Vanguard” was so interesting with his dark urges and unique abilities. Mia was a great morally grey FMC with her fake identities and her ruthless ability to kill. The romance was dark, complicated, spicy, and emotional.

I loved the scientific elements and the mysteries and conspiracies. The story got better & more intense as it went on with a big reveal at the end! I’m excited that this is a duology and I’m looking forward to the conclusion.

Thank you to Karina for the ARC!

Thank you so much to Karina and her team for sending me the ARC of this book! This was unlike anything I have ever read before and I enjoyed it so much! Read the majority of it in one day.
Karina Halle always delivers and this one is so good. Vanguard is an MMC you cannot help but feel bad for and turned on by all at the same time. Mia has her own struggles she has had to deal with as well, and is also a badass.
-undercover spy/assassin x superhero target
-shared struggles and bonding through grief
-flying/invisibility
-genetically engineered and altered
-political
-spicy and sexy
You will fall in love with Vanguard and all of his layers. He is the perfect blend of sexy, dominant, and sweet. He could call me Darlin’ any day.

The ending will also make you really glad there will be more to Mia and Vanguards story.
PS: if you’ve read and love Grave Matter you’re in for some fun crossover.

Thank you so much Karina Halle for sending me an ARC!

The story is set in 2040, a Post-Dystopian world.
Right from the beginning there was nods to things going on in the real world right now that was refreshing to see, its what made me fall into the story as were currently experiencing similar things.

I really enjoyed Mia and Nate's story, it was action packed, full of mystery and lust.
This was my first spy book and Karina made me feel like I was watching a film with all the world building.

I adore everything Karina writes and this proves to me that she can write anything (even if I wouldnt of chose this plot subject) and will deliver!

I am so happy I got to read the ARC for this amazing book!

Oh my goodness. Where do I even start?! This book is unlike anything I have ever read before and I had the best time. I truly loved every single page. The ending left me wanting more, I am so excited for book 2!

A superhero and spy romance book? Yes please.

Both MC’s are morally grey? YESSS.

I need Vanguard in my life🥵 absolute perfection. And I want to be Mia when I grow up! She’s such a badass.

I loved the romance, seeing them fall for each other but trying so hard not to because it was truly messy and forbidden. I also loved the way they opened up to each other about truly difficult subjects, their stories just hurt my heart.

The tension, the banter, the yearning, the spice was all just perfection. It had me blushing and kicking my feet🤭

I cannot wait for book 2!

Is a gritty, high-stakes blend of spy thriller, assassin drama, dark-ish romance, and post-dystopian superhero energy—and it absolutely kept me on edge.

This book is packed with tension from start to finish. There were so many twists and turns I genuinely did not see coming, and the pacing kept me locked in the entire time. The romance is dark, intense, and obsessive, layered perfectly into the action without overpowering the plot. Watching the line between hero and weapon blur was fascinating—and honestly unsettling in the best way.

The whole story gave me serious iRobot vibes, with that same eerie question lingering throughout: at what point does a weapon stop being human? And that ending… WOW. I absolutely did not see it coming!

Overall, this was a thrilling, thought-provoking ride that left me desperate for more. I enjoyed it so much and cannot wait for book two.

This book is great, and the perfect example of why Karina Halle is one of my favorite authors. I was very excited and grateful to receive an ARC. Typically I am not drawn to spy and espionage stories, but I knew I was going to have to read this one right away. The fast paced story, and plot twists do not disappoint. Probably the most obvious reason this book resonates with me is because of how much I, a woman living in 2026 America, can relate to the political and social horror following the Dark Decade of the Vanguard universe. In a world where the morally corrupt and obnoxiously rich have all the power we meet Mia the spy and Vanguard the ultimate hero. These two actually have great chemistry, and are both truly interesting characters. I can’t wait to find out their ending.

I was super excited to read this book when I read the synopsis. So when I received the ARC I was immediately sat expecting to kill the book in one go.

The first 30% I was hooked. The banter and the tension between Nate and Mia was so good. But then I felt like she gave into him way too quick from someone who’s supposed to be a femme fatale character. They have sex a ridiculous amount of times and yes it’s hot. However, no matter how good the sex was, I felt the middle of the book dragged on and I found myself skimming it to reach the end.

The last 30% book was action packed and had reveals that set the stage for the final book in the duet series. Honestly, overall it was an ok read and maybe it just wasn’t for me since I’m not a huge superhero fan.

"I am not here to whore out on America’s favorite superhero just because he has nice arms and a jawline that could cut glass. Get it together, you sl@g."

Girl the way I devoured this book is crazy. The dystopian world, the post apocalyptic US Superhero, the English secret agent... fighting a corrupt government. It hit so much more because to be honest, its not that far fetched. The nods to the current goings on in the world, the fight for whats right. Lord I just loved it all.
Don't even get me started on the smut because holy cr@p on a cracker was it hot.
I dmmd Karina whilst reading because I couldnt believe how good it was.

WHAT IS THAT ENDING?!?!?!

I am dying. I did not realize this wasn’t a stand-alone and the ending has me needing book 2 ASAP.

The world that is built in this story is sooo good and definitely leads you to questioning what is going to happen next. It’s so hard to talk about without spoilers, but I loved the relationship between the MCs. They both struggled and just wanted the life they weren’t forced to have and I can’t wait to see where this story goes.
