Cocktails in Hell #6

A Whisper of Wolf

Rate this book
A stalking wolf, a looming war, and Violet catching feelings? Truly the end times.

The world is spiraling into chaos, but Violet has a far more immediate the wolf shifter stalking her at all hours of the day and night.

With war on the horizon and a moody vampire roommate to wrangle, Violet is stretched thin. And when she realizes the wolves aren’t fully on her side, she’s forced to make a choice—absolve the New Orleans clan of responsibility… or use the power Easton accidentally gifted her to show them what leadership really looks like.

She could force them to submit. But that’s not Violet’s way.

Instead, she recruits Clara and Dave to help her hatch a plan to win the wolves’ loyalty. Unfortunately, the plan has one enormous, inconvenient side

Violet falls in love.

For real this time.

But romance is not on her to-do list. She has a war to win, a pregnant vampire queen to appease with pickles and ice cream, and a devil who needs saving.

Love is just going to have to get in line… and hope Violet doesn’t trip over it.

A Whisper of Wolf blends sharp humor, emotional depth, and supernatural tension as Violet faces wolf politics, rising danger, and an inconveniently timed romance. S.E. Babin delivers a warm, witty, and wildly addictive chapter of the Cocktails in Hell saga.

(FYI I tend to only review one book per series, unless I want to change my scoring by 0.50 or more of a star. -- I tend not to read reviews until after I read a book, so I go in with an open mind.)

I read the series in a few days, book one I rated 3.75 stars.

I did not like the ending of book 5 and with the blurb for this book, it seemed the author was going to pair her off with Easton (aka psycho) the alpha wolf male who in book 5

I'm done with this series, I like my leads to have self respect. This isn't even enemies to lovers, those can make sense when well written, this was

I read to make myself feel better, not to be utterly revolted by the love interest!

I didn't like any of the other would be love interests, but Easton is the worst of the worst. I don't understand why the author couldn't let her finally find actual love with a decent male who actually cares for her.

First time read the author's work?: No

Will you be reading more?: No

Would you recommend?: No

------------
How I rate Stars: 5* = I loved (must read all I can find by the author)
4* = I really enjoyed (got to read all the series and try other books by the author).
3* = I enjoyed (I will continue to read the series)
or
3* = Good book just not my thing (I realised I don't like the genre or picked up a kids book to review in error.)

All of the above scores means I would recommend them!
-
2* = it was okay (I might give the next book in the series a try, to see if that was better IMHO.)
1* = Disliked

Note: adding these basic 'reviews' after finding out that some people see the stars differently than I do - hoping this clarifies how I feel about the book. :-)

Huh.. this one was off for me, it’s like the MFC turned into a wimp over Emerson. Forgiving him all kinds of betrayals where she’s very unforgiving of others. IDK this book wasn’t as enjoyable as the rest of the series, however, the secondary characters continue to shine.

Mehh 2.5 rounded down. I was really enjoying this series but WTH this one made No Sense with the love interest. He tricked her and then all of a sudden she cares for him?? When did that happen? And he’s the worst of the way too many love interests in this series. Geez pick one and let them develop as characters together. And the revenge thing with Baba? WTH?? That was effed up.

I enjoy the world and side characters and the potions magic. I liked Violet in the beginning but now I’m not really sure. Her growth to being a leader is just missing and now she comes across as cold and blasé instead of bad ass. She’s lost the kindness that made people want to support her. Disappointed with how the series has progressed. Not sure I can continue reading.

I’m vacillating between 3.5 & 4 stars

This one was a little harder for me to get into - maybe because I’d had to wait for this book to be released and hadn’t just continued straight from the previous one. But also, it was much shorter.

NOT as short as I thought it would be when I saw the page count - thankfully - but still not quite as robust as the previous books.

I also have mixed feelings regarding Easton. It was dropped in our laps. It didn’t originate organically and over time. I still feel that Lachlan was our best ‘romance origin’ of the multiple men. And I also feel frustrated with Easton’s manipulation AGAIN. And why did she choose to forgive HIM, but not Alistaire, Max, Jude, Lachlan? And then, I guess we already burned the whole ‘fated mates’ bridge with Alistaire, didn’t we? But that would be been MUCH better suited to Easton.

And then we have the lack of spice. I’m not saying it has to be open door. And I suppose you could say the author gave us SOME more than fade to black, but it was still done in such a clinical, detached manner. We don’t even know the emotions Violet has for Easton. While she’s SAYING with her mouth that she doesn’t want to be forced into situations, she sure did allow herself to be corralled into that one. I don’t know. I guess I’m not disappointed with the WHO, but moreso the HOW.

As it is, I know we have more story coming up, but I wouldn’t be upset if I forgot all about the series and didn’t pick up the next book(s).

Far out. It’s bad enough there are MULTIPLE love interests in each book that never go anywhere…. But to end up with EASTON??? Like what the fuck? There is ZERO chemistry. No conversations or getting to know each other. He manipulates her AGAIN in this book. He hurt her physically and emotionally in the last book and then sets her up again in this one!!!! He orchestrates a ‘fight to the death’ during a visit to his pack after promising her that she’s SAFE WITH HIM. All just to get rid of a rival he can’t kill himself. THEN she jumps into bed with him after organising his torture in return. Yuck. I would have preferred she slept with any and all of her other love interests so far, to be honest.

HOWEVER, I still had to give it four stars for the rest of the story line and characters! Love the whole concept and the other relationships (friendships and family) Violet has in the story. Clara and Dave are life and I am invested in their HEA.

Not vibing AT ALL in Violet’s love life moving forward. It’s like she is so desperate to be loved, she is just taking up any new dude that comes along. They’re ALL stunning and ALL seem to get her. But Easton is the absolute worst of the bunch and the LAST one I wanted her to give it up to. Boo.

Side note: secretly hoping that Landry and Jude are the same person (both dragon-ish, same lair, both disappeared at the same time!) and he will come back and reveal himself as her true mate who has been protecting her and loving her from afar all along!!!!!

good

Lucifer has been taken, and Violet has a plan to get him back.
It involves dealing with Baba Yaga, and the angels, and maybe get the wolves to help.
Meanwhile she has training to do…

So Violet is with Easton is this one, a move that is a little surprising because she has been so careful so far in her relationships, that I’m a little concerned as to why she’d be so quick to trust Easton. Personally I don’t trust him at all!
Baba Yaga was a fun introduction to the crew, and I’m looking forward to seeing what she brings with her.
The angels are definitely trouble, and it looks like Michael is gearing up for his big move.
Like I said, Violet is with Easton, but it all takes placed behind closed doors, so no real spice in this one.
And an intriguing visitor has some special foresight for Clara that foreshadows her own series that follows this one!

This book is just as entertaining as the rest, with the same besties from the bar as before, plus a few new ones. It’s a fast paced story, with lots of twists and turns and I’m looking forward to seeing where it all ends up.
Recommended for urban/contemporary fantasy lovers.

Again, a warning that if someone is religious this might not be the series for you. There are a lot of things that test the boundary of good angels, bad demons as well as other things.
I enjoyed this book but a couple of things aren’t perfect.
After a major battle with Easton, the Alpha leader, where they tried to kill each other, Easton is now saying he wants a date and to have her in his bed. And Violet doesn’t really disagree. I think more time was needed for that.
But all things seem to work out. After Michael kidnapped Lucifer, the group starts to make plans to rescue him. It’s complicated and needs a lot of help, including Baba Yaga, but it’s interesting.
There is action, Violet learns more about her magic, surprises, suspense, and of course a lot of humour. I want a juke box like Gary, such timely musical choices.
More is learned about a few of the characters. There is so much snark at times I’d really like to interact with a bunch of people there.
I found this an easy, quick, entertaining read.

A Whisper of Wolf by S.E. Babin

I binged this one and forgot to keep track of my thoughts as I went. Overall, I love all the paranormal characters—this sets up nicely for Cara and the Demon Trucker, which is the series I found first.

The twisted biblical elements sometimes feel like they’re trying to be “religiously clever,” but instead they skim uncomfortably close to distortion. 😈 I get that the characters are from hell, so the perspective has to lean that way, but there are interpretations I just can’t accept. I had to actively separate my personal beliefs from the fictional world to enjoy the story.

That said, Babin writes really interesting, layered characters. My ratings would be much higher if the biblical elements weren’t so heavily perverted.

Honestly, the series is getting tiring.

Eaton is an utter piece of work. OK, I get that "alphas are different" and all that. But his level of manipulation and deceit was annoying. And Violet using Baba Yaga to torture him but not kill him was pretty ridiculous.

Violet's great idea to engage in mass slaughter in the guise of peace talks was rather disgusting. This is her second "mass slaughter" event and I am seeing a pattern.

Mostly at this point I want to see how this ends so that Clara and Violet are both alive but not in power at the start of the new series. Everyone in this series is too overpowered.

good

I liked how Violet decided to teach her Wolf shifter not to take advantage of her like he did in the last book. I also like the fact that they brought an interesting which into the fold to help find Lucifer. There was an interesting twist at the end of this book that they found when they went to rescue Lucifer. It wasn’t just Michael that they had to keep an eye out for. I will definitely be reading the next book in this series. Hopefully they will get rid of Michael soon because it is starting to get old dealing with him all the time.

This one definitely pushed some boundaries on the religious end of the storyline. As another review stated, I had to really separate belief from fiction. There is action in this one but some is manipulative (again) and some is very wide ranging. A few surprises and some definite twisting with Violet's magic that she will need to control. She and Easton become much closer - not so certain how I feel about that one, he's been nothing but manipulative so far. Positives on the side of Lilith, Lucifer, and two very unexpected additions in the mix.

A lot happens in this book. Some of those things irritate me a lot, like , and the kind of hurried ending. And some things amused me. I might read the next book when it comes out next month but I’m annoyed enough with some of the developments in this book that I might just quit while I still like (almost) everyone. We’ll see.

Alpha love interest

Love this series and SE Babins other series. The alpha in this book is the least interesting love interest of the series. I hope one of the other men return in the next book. The series premise and the plot twists are excellent.

Dead Heat, the seventh book of the Crossroads Queen series, is an ebook I borrowed through Kindle Unlimited (KU). I'm beginning to think Lorelei is never going to catch a break. But her misadventures are what keep me coming back. Another great story line.

This series should be on TV.

I love Cocktails in Hell. Violet is getting closer in fulfilling her goal to save the world and she has made lots of friends to help her. What more could we ask for in a supernatural series?

Feint left run right

Violet has to stay one step ahead. Because anytime she takes someone at face value they use her. The angels are dogging her trying to see what she is planning. And its a good thing that they don't know. She is not the daughter of Death for nothing.

Chaos reigns supreme

Really enjoying the cast of characters in this series and you just get a little bit of everyone. I was surprised by part of the ending but that's my own fault. Enjoy!

Good book, good story. Hate hate hate the wolf shifter, I can’t believe she accepts him after everything he did to her. I hate it when the FMC loses her fabulous strong self to be a weak side kick for an absolute arse of a man. I am disappointed.

This didn’t play out like I expected and I can’t wait to get my hands on the next book in the series. I loved everything about this book and enjoyed it very much. It’s absolutely a candidate for my list of all-time favourites. Five stars.

God, Violet just can't seem to catch a break with the men in her life. Things aren't going too well for ya girl. Out of the frying pan and into the fire seems to be her default setting. Loving the story, characters are entertaining. Can't wait to see what happens in the next book.

Heartbreaking at times but very good. A lot of fighting and romance, along with sadness . But in the end Violet makes it better.
