There are more views about her engagement ending than her ex’s season opener!
One overheard conversation during her engagement party shattered Maya Cox’s life in seconds. “She’s not that pretty, but she sure is loyal.” But it’s what her pro-football playing fiancé said next that completely humiliated her. Then the world got a hold of a video taken of her heartbreak, causing the situation to go viral in a matter of days.
Needing to escape, Maya packs her bag and telephoto lens before heading out of the country for work. After she returns months later, she decides to take a small vacation at a vineyard in Italy.
There’s just one hitch.
When she arrives, Maya comes face to face with Troy Walsh—former kicker for the Oklahoma Lightning and her ex’s former teammate. He’s also a man she considered a friend before hashtags like #EngagementGate started trending.
Troy is nothing but kind, steady, and loyal giving her the space she needs to become herself again. But the longer they spend together, his good looks, easy manner, and genuine heart make it impossible to resist advancing the forward line of their relationship from friends to something more.
Much more.
The more time they spend together, the more sparks fly. Troy encourages the woman Maya is—her fire, her fight, her fierce will to reclaim herself. But when her ex tries to reach out, will Maya forgive his cruel words or allow this former kicker to restart her heart?

Tracey Jerald knew she was meant to be a writer when she would re-write the ending of books in her head on her bike when she was a young girl growing up in southern Connecticut. It wasn’t long before she was typing alternate endings and extended epilogues “just for fun.” After college in Florida, where she obtained a degree in Criminal Justice swearing she saw things she’ll never quite believe and never entirely forget, Tracey traded the world of law and order for IT. Her work for a global internet startup transferred her to Northern Virginia where she met her husband in what many call their own happily ever after. They have one son. Romance trope: friends to lovers Series: Games of Love Length: 292 pages
Plot: Maya thinks she's getting her HEA while celebrating her engagement at a party with her fiance and friends, but then she overhears a conversation where her fiance says some awful things. She realizes their relationship is over, so she leaves. But she also leaves behind her fiance's former teammate and friend, Troy, someone who has always been on her side. So when she runs into him months later, it becomes obvious that they have a chance to explore something special between the two of them.
Commentary: This was a sort-of overheard trope, although she didn't overhear the actual hero saying anything bad about her. It was a sweet story, but not a lot of angst or tension, to be honest. It became a little boring once Maya got to the villa (winery?). The ending was a forgone conclusion (although to be fair, most romances are) and it was just a matter of seeing how much sweeter Troy was going to be in the meantime. I like this author's writing, although I'm not a sports fan at all and could have donw without all the metaphors. I guess I was a little underwhelmed, but it was a pleasant enough diversion for a while.
1. Maya left Bryce in a spectacular way and it didn’t occur to him that she may have overheard his conversation with his buddies and the insulting and contemptuous things he said about her? 2. Although this book did contain the “overheard” trope, it wasn’t between the main characters so there wasn’t really a gut punch moment or any grovel. 3. Way too many sports analogies. Even during the $ex scenes. 🤮 Eg. “I kept the toxic player in the game and benched some of the best members of my team.” “You just lost five yards of forward movement with that comment, Walsh.” “I call unsportsmanlike acts. Ten-yard penalty.” “Is it because you’re afraid to step up to the line of scrimmage, or is it because it’s me?” “Here’s your chance to repeat the down.” And, this was all just in ONE conversation. 4. Badly written. Lots of sentence fragments. Awkward phrasing. Eg. “Tonight began with promise and ended in damage control, with me stuck playing defense of ignoring Bryce who, by no means, I can control.” 5. When Troy and Maya went to visit the vineyard in Kent, Troy allowed their married guide, Chelsea, to flirt with him and ignore and disrespect Maya knowing how it must have made her feel after Bryce’s cheating. Even when Chelsea blatantly hit on him, Troy said and did nothing to let her know he didn’t appreciate her treatment of his girlfriend “because he was too kind and tactful to make a scene.”

I loved this sports linked romance with a difference At start of book we are with Maya eavesdropping to a conversation at her own engagement party which sets up the story arc for the book. Troy has always secretly held a candle for Maya when he literally almost fell into her arms at their first meeting even though he's her fiance's best friend. Maya is a very strong character with her own successful career as a photographer travelling the world. Troy has retired from football to run his family vineyard Maya wants to get away to heal and ends up in Italy I loved the close bond Maya has with her 3 best friends and their text messaging is so good and hilarious this is a captivating read I found hard to put down. without giving anything away the ex is a douche he gets a great comeuppance I can't wait to see the rest of the girls get their books
I loved Kickstart My Heart! The plot, characters and romance were written so well, i could not put this book down. Troy and Maya had so much chemistry but they also had this amazing foundation they’d built over time that they just expanded upon. Getting to know both of these characters was so good. I loved learning about Maya and her photography, how passionate she was about it and learning about some of her adventures. Getting to know Troy’s love of football, the injury and how he’d turned that passion and determination onto the vineyard was so good too! They were both just great characters and their love story was amazing. I loved all of the secondary characters especially Maya’s girl squad! They were awesome. I can’t wait to read more of this series.
The h overhears her fiance and high school boyfriend and current love of her life bad mouthing her (and women in general) to his teammates. She leave him and 4 months later bumps into the simp that is the H, who took her side over the ex and has always had a thing for her.
This is very much an insta love sort of story where the H is all about how perfect the h is. My problem is I don't see why he loves her because I can't relate to either of these characters.
It's all very well and good to write about a strong female character leaving a crappy partner but a tad unrealistic that she's managed to get over all the years of shared history in 4 months.
Also, I don't like being 'told' a character is kind and lovely and amazing. I need to see it.
🔥 THIS ONE'S FOR YOU 🔥 🏈 Pro-football romance… with a twist 👂 Overheard heartbreak that changes everything ✈️ A dreamy Italian vacation escape 🐶 Labrador-energy hero who falls first (and harder) 📸 Friends-to-lovers slow-burn sweetness 💔 OM drama sacked right 💥 Former teammates colliding in the BEST way
This is the story of a woman reclaiming her fire and the man who knew she had it all along. Plus, you’re going to swoon, melt, and want to instant replay Troy’s scenes.
If you want a story with two MCs you’ll love right from the start, pick this read up. I loved Maya’s strength and perseverance. When her ex-fiance betrays her, talking about cheating on her in front of his teammates, she picks herself up and walks out. Of course the whole thing goes viral. Months later, on break from assignment photographing the world, she makes plans to stop at an Italian villa and winery to recharge her batteries. There she comes face to face with Troy, her ex’s former teammate and someone she considered a friend. Troy is determined to show her his role in everything and that he’s always had her back. Maya’s hurt slowly she thaws and they pick up their friendship again. However, the sparks that few between them years ago when they first met, hint at a future she could have with him if she’s brave enough to reach for it, even with her ex hounding her for a second chance. This friends to lovers, he falls first, sports, he’s her ex-fiance’s teammate, holiday romance is full of heat and heart set in the charm of the Italian countryside.
I really enjoyed how Maya and Troy rekindled their friendship and slowly fell in love. Troy was the ultimate good guy who always had Maya’s back. When fate brought her to his villa, I loved how he took the opportunity to have his second chance with a woman he always loved. I adored how he was willing to wait for her to work through her hurt and I love how Maya didn’t rush into a relationship with him. They flirted and got to know each other better. I loved how the ending came together. I also loved how sweet their courtship and romance was. Overall this is a feel good, easy read and a start to a fun series.
The opening to this was brutal… Maya was destroyed, but she dusted off that crown, and acted like a queen!
Troy is the hero we all want and need. This golden retriever, no… labrador… is simply gorgeous. From his confrontation with her ex, to his everlasting support of Maya and her dreams. Her support network (aka, her gaggle of friends) were amazing, and I adored their humour. They weren’t the only ones falling off their chairs at Amy’s antics…
Now…. onto the ex… Bryce… is a tool, a twat, a dingleberry, bsically, he sucks... The gaslighting, the sheer delusion and the outright sheer horror at his antics… He’s not in it much, and it was mostly overheard, but he would easily be one of the top-most-loathed exes that I’ve read. Well done on packing so much into such a small (in more ways than one) character.
The humour in this was top notch.. Amy and her g-strong butt cracks… to Troy’s lines “I don’t care about my cup size, but I sure as hell want to learn more about yours.”
Together, Maya and Troy were gorgeous. I LOVED reading their story. It wasn’t always easy, but I typically found myself smiling while reading. And their ending? Simply gorgeous! But also left me in stitches from that epic bonus chapter.
Thanks Tracey, for giving me the opportunity to read in advance.
⭐️Every time she laughs at something I’ve said, I feel a split second of vertigo right before a free fall—the kind that makes you wonder if you’re about to crash or fly.⭐️
⭐️ I give up and admit to myself what I should have realized much sooner. I’m falling in love with my ex-teammate’s ex-fiancée. ⭐️
I really enjoyed this story, it was light hearted between Troy and Maya. After the devastating beginning with Maya overhearing her fiancé admitting to not only cheating on her but also not really loving her for her. She breaks it off and disappears.
Troy a former teammate stands up and defends her, secretly always holding a torch for her.
Fast forward a few months and they are pushed back together by fate (or a booking in the off season of the villa)
Troy opens his home, his heart and his soul to her, in turn they begin to slowly but surely fall for each other. I liked that it was so refreshingly light with them fitting into each other’s lives.
I did find the football related sayings a little forced, in my opinion and it did stunt the read momentarily. I would’ve loved to have seen more of their friendship between Troy and Maya from before Maya broke her engagement off.
I honestly can't say if this is my first read from this author, but it may be my first read from this author in a while.
I liked the premise of the book. Maya leaves her longstanding boyfriend after hearing of him trash talking women, inclusive of her.
Break up warranted.
Off for a long vacation to mend her broken heart. Ironically her choice of venues is owned by the family of her ex's teammate.
Troy has apparently being harboring feelings for Maya while she was with Bryce. Months after their not so clean break up he decides it time to make his move.
Their relationship advances quickly, which seemed a bit rushed after coming of a long relationship (but I have known people who have met and got married within 6 weeks.)
Troy trys to show Maya how a woman should be treated but in my opinion falls short while getting hit on right in front of her.
There were a lot of sports references in the dialogue, a few too many for me but some I found cute.
Their story was a fun, low angst, friends to lovers romance. This is only the start of this series so I am looking forward to seeing where Tracey takes these characters.
Maya is happily thinking about her fiancé and their future when she overhears him talking about her -- how he really feels and that he has been cheating on her all of their relationship. His friend, and hers, Troy stands up for her but she doesn't really stay long enough to hear it all. The ups and leaves and goes on a month-long vacation at a vineyard. And surprise, Troy's family owns it. Now ensues a budding friends-to-lovers relationship.
💖 Not just a football jock 💖 Overheard heartbreak - cheating ex 💖 New Hero who falls first (and harder) 💖 OM Drama/Cheating by Ex (not on page) 💖 Vacation romance
Maya overhears her fiancé revealing he's been cheating on her throughout their entire relationship. Troy, their mutual friend, stands up for her, but she leaves before hearing it all and escapes on a month-long vacation to a vineyard, and who wouldn’t love a month-long vacation in a vineyard? What follows is the best kind of slow-burn friends-to-lovers romance. While Troy falls first, hard and fast, Maya's journey is perfectly paced. His patience, understanding, and genuine goodness make him the ideal book boyfriend. It was a great love story that kept me invested in Maya's search for true love after such a devastating betrayal.
This is my first book by Tracey Jerald, and it did not disappoint. There were a few references to events that didn't make sense (I suspect these are Easter eggs to her previous books); other than that, this was a nearly perfect love story that keeps you invested in Maya finding true love after a devastating betrayal by her fiancé.
Although Troy falls first, hard, and fast, Maya's journey is the best kind of slow burn. Troy's patience, understanding, and genuine goodness make for the perfect book boyfriend. I cannot wait to read more of Tracey's books!
Such a sweet book. Well, the jerk she was with in the beginning and overheard was not sweet at all, but Mr. Right has loved her for years. Troy is the man she deserves and needs. The football references were cute. Maya's friends were amazing and make you chuckle. I loved the little world they were in and able to get to know each other in a little slice of heaven. Friendship is always a great place to start a relationship. Thank you for the ARC, I appreciated this read.
Kickstart my Heart is the first book in a new series. Author Tracey Jerald tackles this first book with a game winning field to goal! After the heroine, Maya, overhears a conversation between her QB fiance and his teammates her world turns sideways. While taking time for herself she ends up reconnecting with Troy, a man she considered a friend, who was also her fiances ex-teammate. Troy is everything Maya needs and deserves, the fact he's secretly crushed on her for a while just a little more motivation for him to show Maya the way a real man treats a woman. I loved this book! I loved the characters! Troy was unexpectedly so much more than a footballer-so very swoon worthy!
Kickstart My Heart is a sweet romance. I liked the characters Maya and Troy. Especially the way he had her back. Noe that she is single, he takes the opportunity to make his move on the woman he has pined for. Their relationship went friend a great friendship to something amazing!
The football references were cute but a little overdone. The chemistry between them was intense.
This book just did not hit the mark. Even though it is an “overheard” moment, it didn’t have the gut punch I like. Mainly because the H just didn’t care and never tried to get her back.
And what’s with all the sports phrases? It doesn’t work for this book and makes the book seem more juvenile than I think the author intended.
This book just didn’t do it for me. I would not recommend.
Super cute second chance romance. Loved the heroine in this story! Hero was quite lovely too but the heroine rocked it! She was strong and accomplished and didn't hesitate to walk away. Also enjoyed the taste of Italy! This is a pretty quick read so if you want something sweet and satisfying with a little bit of betrayal and OW drama definitely give it a read!
I enjoyed this sweet palate cleanser story. It was fun to go on the journey of their friendship. It was a longer story than I normally read. I love how the story came alive and felt like they were a real couple.
You know when a book is just boring where you find yourself taking frequent breaks, skimming, changing apps then forcing yourself to go back only to yawn midway through the chapter. Yea that’s this book
I liked the book. I would’ve liked to see more confrontation between h and the ex-finance when the betrayal happened but overall I enjoyed the read and would recommend.
I was gifted this story over Christmas! Thank you Ms. Jerald . A new author for me!. I truly enjoyed this book. I can’t even imagine overhearing what poor Maya heard! The references to football and vineyard terms were fun! Even though this is a standalone it looks like more stories are coming based around Maya’s friend group and I can’t wait!
Kickstart My Heart is the first book in the Game of Love series. It’s a vacation romance. This book caught my attention from the very beginning. Interesting storyline and well written. I fell for Troy and his kind nature. I liked the slow growing connection. The friend dynamic was great. This was an easy read and I look forward to the next book.
Many thanks to Tracey for an early copy! I was so excited to dive into Tracey's first foray into sports romance and it did not disappoint. Kickstart My Heart had all the signature aspects I've come to expect from a Tracey Jerald book -- two people who are down bad for each other, humor, intrigue, sexiness, a super tight knit group of women and one ex-boyfriend I wanted to reach into my Kindle and murder with my bare hands. Ahem, anyway.
If you're looking for a fun and sexy romance and maybe to learn a few things about football, I recommend Kickstart My Heart. It's in KU now!
