What if the dreams you cling to are the very thing standing in your way?
Gery Meldrum, a young and hopeful shop assistant at Penrose & Boyle, risks everything when he confuses kindness for love—and confesses his feelings to Caoimhe, his boss’s wife. Banished from the only home he’s known, Gery flees to Glasgow to rebuild his life in obscurity. But fate has other plans. When he opens his door to Catherine, a mysterious girl burdened by secrets and an unusual past, Gery is drawn into a web of longing, loss, and second chances. As he tries to protect Catherine and unravel the truth about her, Gery discovers that the Realm’s shadow still touches his world—even if he can never enter it. To find happiness, Gery must finally face his past, and the one man he’s been running from: Rob Boyle.
I loved this short, sweet starting-over romance story. It is a bit "quieter" than the two main Realm novels, but just like in life, sometimes deep and pure stories happen quietly, without drama, which makes it probably even more touching.
The characters are rounded and very human, with their faults and merits. The two MCs meet when both of them are forced to start over, either due to their own (Gery) or others' (Cathy) mistakes. I liked that beyond the "damsel in distress" situation, we get to see how Gery can eventually learn from his past mistakes, forgive himself and move on to become a better person - something probably many of us can relate to. And it was moving to see how Cathy slowly opens up to Gery's warmth, and can let go of past pain and fears caused by her horrible experiences. A sensitive love story of two souls healing each other.
A short novel about second chances. A bit slow at the start, but got more interesting as the storyline progresses. Declaring his love for the pregnant wife of his boss, Gery got fired and ended up in Glasgow. Catherine created an Illusion of being deformed to hide her prettiness to protect herself. Fate brought them together. A slow burn until they both work through their baggage. A twist related to Grey's past re her family in the other realm and a HEA in the end. The meaning of a realm in the storyline had me a bit baffled as it's not a integral part, except for the Boyles in relation to Catherine.
