Rate this book
A winter homecoming on a wild coast—where hope rides the tide.

On a rugged Vancouver Island coast where winter fog lifts like a curtain, art teacher Kiona Brooks collides with widowed whale-watch captain Reed Archer—and his fiercely lovable thirteen-year-old daughter.

Kiona’s convictions about wildlife tourism clash with Reed’s livelihood, until a breathtaking kayak encounter with resident orcas forces them to look past grief, guilt, and first impressions.

As New Year’s tides turn in their small town, sparks and second chances rise with the swell. To claim a future, Kiona and Reed must risk the past—and trust a love strong enough to carry them between tide and tomorrow.

Between Tide and Tomorrow is a beautiful, slow-burning start to Charlotte McGregor's Songs of the Salish Sea series. Transitioning her knack for small-town charm from Scotland to Vancouver Island, McGregor delivers a romance that is as rich in emotional depth as it is in atmospheric setting.

The Plot:The story follows Kiona, a passionate art teacher and marine advocate, and Reed, a widowed whale-watch captain raising a headstrong teenage daughter. When their conflicting views on wildlife tourism collide against the backdrop of the rugged Pacific Northwest, they are forced to confront not only the local tides but their own deeply buried grief.

What I Loved:
- The Setting: The Pacific Northwest practically acts as a third main character. The descriptions of the misty coast, turning tides, and breathtaking orca encounters are incredibly vivid and immersive.
- Emotional Depth: McGregor handles heavy themes of grief, guilt, and second chances with incredible maturity and sensitivity. The enemies-to-lovers tension feels earned and deeply realistic.
- The Subplots: Reed's relationship with his 13-year-old daughter adds a heartwarming, authentic layer to the story. She is written beautifully, avoiding typical teenage clichés.
- The Eco-Themes: The focus on marine conservation and the ethics of wildlife tourism gives the plot a unique, thought-provoking edge.

A Quick Note on Pace: The book is a true slow-burn. It takes its time establishing the characters' internal traumas and the local environmental politics before the romance fully takes center stage, but the emotional payoff is entirely worth it.

Perfect for fans of atmospheric, mature contemporary romances like those by Brenda Novak or Jill Shalvis. If you love small-town settings, environmental themes, and healing-from-loss journeys, absolutely add this to your TBR list!

Reed and Kiona's story is so packed with emotion that reading it almost gives you whiplash—in the best way possible, of course!!!
The beginning of their relationship resembles an earthquake, with seismic waves that readers can clearly feel. And that's when the emotional roller coaster ride begins...
Not least thanks to the themes woven into the novel, laughter and tears, smiles and outrage, and every emotion in between alternate, and the content can only be described in two words: breathtaking and stirring. It gives you so much food for thought that this book will stay with you for a long time to come.
All the characters are described with such warmth that you immediately take them to heart. And the chapters about whale watching are so vivid and emotionally described that you feel like you're right there in the middle of it, even if you've never participated in such an activity yourself.
This book is bursting with WOW moments and is simply phenomenal!

This is the first in a series set on the Vancouver coast. As I have enjoyed others from this talented author, I happily grabbed this one. What I quickly determined is that this is nothing like the Scottish series she penned, that I enjoyed. [Not that I didn't enjoy this one, because I did, but this is a different reading experience.] This is full of deep, thought provoking and emotional experiences for these characters, and I wasn't expecting my reaction to these chapters.

Reed and Kiona seem to be on opposing sides of the wildlife conservation argument, and find themselves holding to their convictions, creating pressures. It was entertaining to see how those situations turned into a connection for them, and I enjoyed how their relationship developed. This has many things I enjoy reading, and recommend this book and this author.

Fortunate to have received my ARC from Booksirens (thank you), my thoughts are happily left.

Fabulous:
What an interesting and enjoyable book and an amazing start to what looks like is going to be a wonderful series. It melted my heart and was deeply moving despite tackling some serious and heavy subjects such as racism, discrimination and even murder. However, it was all handled in such a respectful and honest way and overall the tone of the book was hopeful and joyful. I loved the emphasis on the power of family and new beginnings. There was also a heartfelt romance between Reed and Kiona that was adorable.
Whilst the beginning was a bit clunky with a lot of names and facts being given, it soon settled into a good rhythm and the story seemed to unfold seamlessly. I now can't wait for the next book and to return to this magical part of the world.
I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review. All opinions expressed are solely my own.

This story delivers plenty of angst, and the emotional tension between Kiona and Reed is front and center—but for me, it was a bit of a double-edged sword.

There’s no denying that the angst is purposeful and ever-present, driving much of the story forward.
That said, the constant friction sometimes felt overwhelming. While I appreciated the emotional aspects, I struggled to fully connect with the characters when their interactions stayed rooted in opposition for so long. I wanted a bit more breathing room—more moments that hinted at softness or understanding earlier on—to balance out the heaviness.

Overall, this is a solid read with strong emotional stakes and a clear vision for its characters. For me, it was a decent, well-written story, but not one that fully swept me away.

Having read previous books from Charlotte I assumed this would be similar to her Scottish stories I've enjoyed. However this story is based in Vancouver, I would say i still enjoyed this just the same. Kiona and Reeds story is more of a emotional, thought provoking story . Both having differing opinions on wildlife preservation. Whilst being on opposing sides of the arguments, they both hold to their beliefs. This however highlights the connection between them, causing them to realise their own strengths. It's interesting to read and a different style of writing from this author, this story is more thought provoking, and i look forward to more in the series.

This is the first book in Charlotte McGregors Songs of the Saish Sea series. I absolutely love her Highland Happiness series and was so excited to read Between Tide and Tomorrow. The story of Reed and Kiona is wonderful. This story really digs into some heavy issues, but the way Charlotte McGregor tackles them was wonderful. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

emotional

Reed and Kiona´s story reminded me that many truths fit for one situation, depending on the point of view. Only when we keep an open mind, are willing to listen to what others think do we have a chance to find a solution to problems that are important to us, even if we seem to stand on different side. I liked how the plot made me think and how the protagonists histories touched my heart.

Absolutely devoured this book and truly enjoyed it to its fullest.

The emotions and depth were executed beautifully and the storyline and plot were unique and both had substance and depth.

Great reading experience and a really strong start to a series that has so much promise.
