This short story is just seventy pages long.

A woman running away from her ex ends up on a farm where a man and his two children live. He was also hiding from something. Within a few short months together, they are both developing some feelings for each other. Then just as you think you know where this story is heading, Daniel throws a curve ball that sent chilling vibes along with it.

This was such a sharp and slick read based on survival and hide and seek from the POV of Sherry who has ran away from her home town on California to Texas to hide from her ex. In doing so, she is taken in by Widow - Marcus and his daughter and son who are making their own new life by hiding from the bad man.

Was intriguing from the get go — and will definitely eat up the second short story being released soon!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ ½ — A Razor-Sharp, Breathless Thriller from Daniel Hurst

If He Finds Us by @danielhurstbooks is a taut, suspense-drenched short story that proves Daniel Hurst doesn’t need a full-length novel to deliver a gut-punch. In just a compact narrative, he manages to build tension, fear, empathy, and—true to his brand—an ending that hits like a bolt of lightning.

The story opens with a simple but chilling premise: He’s looking for us. What if he finds us? From the moment the unnamed narrator arrives at a stranger’s home—seeking refuge and believing safety lies behind someone else’s front door—Hurst locks the reader into a claustrophobic web of dread. The man who offers shelter seems trustworthy, his two children innocent and unsuspecting. Yet the more the narrator settles into this temporary haven, the sharper the guilt becomes. Has she just placed an entire family in the crosshairs of the danger she’s fleeing?

Hurst excels at writing characters who feel as if they’re holding their breath alongside you, and this short story is no exception. The fear is intimate, the stakes intensify quickly, and the pacing keeps you turning pages without realizing you’ve been holding your breath since the first line.

What separates If He Finds Us from more conventional thriller shorts, however, is its emotional undercurrent. The narrator’s desperation and protective instinct add a human layer beneath the suspense—making the eventual shock ending all the more effective. And yes, it’s genuinely shocking in the best Daniel Hurst fashion: surprising, inevitable in hindsight, and guaranteed to linger.

For fans of Hurst’s bestselling psychological thrillers like The Doctor’s Wife, The Couple’s Revenge, and Til Death Do Us Part, this story feels like a distilled, high-octane version of what he does best: ordinary people caught in extraordinary fear, secrets that unravel at the worst moment, and endings that make you rethink every assumption.

Fast, gripping, and unnervingly tense, If He Finds Us is a must-read for thriller lovers craving a quick but unforgettable hit of adrenaline.

This is a fast, engaging read that hooked me right away. A woman on the run from her dangerous ex finds herself in rural Texas, hoping to blend in and take whatever farm work she can get. On her third attempt, she’s taken in by a quiet, kind man who’s clearly hiding secrets of his own—along with raising his two young children.

As the months pass, an unspoken bond forms between them, tender but cautious. And just when you think you know where it’s heading, Daniel Hurst delivers his signature twists that shift everything in the best possible way.

A tight, emotional, and satisfying short story—perfect for when you want something quick but compelling.

A short review for a short story

From the first sentence we are on our way into this quick, frantic tale involving a family and a single lady who all have found themselves together needing to hide and stay hidden

No time for pre ambles or fillings as the story is all story! all in typically Dan Hurst style

I did guess this one! But that was fine

A great fast sharp read

I note the next one is out Dec 13th!!

Scary

This is a story you can read very quickly . a woman running away from an ex ends up in Texas. Looking for any kind of farm work she gets lucky on her third try. A man who himself is hiding with his 2 young children takes her in After several months together feelings are developing but remain unspoken. Then in typical Daniel Hurst form he throws in a twist or two which leaves the reader satisfied. Great short story,

VERY entertaining short story! I didn't suspect much as I was reading, but when I got to the Epilogue, I knew a twist was coming and I was excited to read it. I predicted part of the twist, but what an excellent ending it proved to be. There's more in this series? Let me download them right now!

Always a Surprise Ending

As always, with Daniel Hurst’s books, the ending is not what you expect. If He Finds Us is no different. I do not want to give it away but the sweet love story is not such a thing.

predictable

Usually I love this author but this was unfortunately predictable. It won’t stop me from keeping reading Daniel Hurst though. I usually keep away from short stories. I should’ve used my time getting into one of his regular books.
