Single momhood put my love life on the bench until billionaire Bill Baker skated in.
I’ve always put my son first—every carpool, every budget cut, every hockey practice at insane hours.
His dream?
Playing pro hockey.
Mine?
A nap.
So, when rumors swirl about a new AHL team landing in our tiny town of Mapleton, both our ears perk up. Noah gets a tryout. I get public humiliation after mistaking the team owner for the janitor.
That should’ve been the end of it. But apparently, fate is a fan of awkward encounters, because I keep running into the guy.
Again.
And again.
We start to connect through shared interests, and it turns out he’s actually a nice guy.
The real problem?
It’s too bad falling for the billionaire who holds my son’s future in his hands is a penalty I can’t afford.
An Icicle Made for Two is a billionaire, single mom, sweet hockey romcom with HEA that is filled with that “we shouldn’t—but we totally might” tension.
Trying not to spoil the end, but Bill and Ruth get a nice big moment with Noah.
Also, this made me love small town businesses, anxiety rep in teenage boys while not victimizing them, and the food! 🍱
Oh man! This ARC got me craving cheese curds and chicken wings! 😂 maybe I had a random thought of “books and cheese curds for too”
Read if you like single parent Romance and (sports boss x small business worker).
Best lines: (prepare to laugh or fall in love!) 😍 “seriously, dude, I will never, ever, under any circumstance call you Dad.”The thought is so out of the blue, I laugh. “I don’t think we need to worry about that.”He murmurs something inaudible under his breath as he continues to shake his head while he walks toward the exit, leaving me alone.Only this time, I don’t feel so alone.” 😂 Noah is kind of funny in this one. Taking a risk, I brush a strand of hair behind her ear and watch as she leans into my touch, even lowering her eyelids as if it’s warming her. The way she savors it undoes me. I told myself I’d take everything slowly, but the cues she’s giving me tell me she’s ready. I lean in slowly, watching her eyes for hesitation. She doesn’t flinch as I proceed to brush my lips against hers in a testing kiss.”
“We dance until the music stops, and I reluctantly allow Bill to escort me all the way back to the hotel and down our hallway. It’s hours past my usual bedtime. Except for the soft tap of our shoes on the carpet, everything is silent and no one is around. When we reach my door, he slides his hand on my back, as he’s clearly gotten so used to doing tonight, and he leans down, staring deeply into my eyes like I’m the only thing that matters.” “Our lips meet, and the kiss is deep and sweet. He holds me tight, as if he never wants to let go, and I kiss him back with everything in me.I feel like the luckiest woman alive. As he kisses me again with the river sparkling behind us, I know we’ve built our own little bridge from my heart to his. It’s not steel, but it’s made of love, affection, honesty, fidelity, humor—and maybe a little bit of hockey—and it’s the perfect life for two.”
Okay, I’m officially a fan of this author. This book stole my heart. Bill and Ruth were so adorable. And I loved that this was a letter in life romance. In not a spring chicken anymore. So I really enjoyed this. I loved what an awesome mom Ruth was to her son. She’d give him the world if she could. And Bill was so much fun. I loved their encounters that eventually turned into more. Such a sweet and heartwarming book. I can’t wait to read more from this author.
Great read! Bill and Ruth are erfect names for these two. A later in life romance with a lot of tension. Both of them are wanting to do what's best for themselves, but mostly for those they care about.
A hockey coach MC, and a son that's an up and coming hockey player. A good portion of hockey talk or ice time 🏒🏒🏒. I loved that so much.
A great balance of hockey, romance and family. Also a just kisses, sweet read with a HEA!
As I love hockey romances, I have read the hockey romances stories J.P. Sterling wrote and those books I loved (highly recommended!). Those are stories about hockey players and their (love) life, but you never read a book about the owner of a hockey team. And thus J.P. Sterling decided to write that story: An Icicle Made for Two.
When single Mom Ruth hears that Bill Baker, self-made billionaire and former hockey player, decides to build a hockey arena in her hometown Mapleton and is searching for players to establish his own hockey team, her dreams for her son come true, as Noah wants to be a professional hockey player. But things do not go according to plan.
This book was such a joy to read! I loved it from the very first. I was very curious to learn who Bill Baker really is. He got a minor role in the earlier books and I always wondered why he was so determined to be the best and beat a former old friend. And he is such a great character: charming, determined, but also kind hearted. I did not expect this at all and that was such a nice surprise. He is just a normal guy who is rich.
Ruth comes across really good too. She is kind, works hard for her diner which is tough, and at the same time she does everything for her son, to make his dreams come true.
The interactions between Bill and Ruth are sweet and cute, and sometimes funny. They have a great chemistry. As Ruth does not want to get in the way of her son’s dreams, she is a bit hesitant to get into a relationship. But Bill is very determined to make her fall for him.
The writing style is great and flowing and I had a hard time putting the book down. J.P. Sterling has a great writing style; one I enjoy every time I read one of her books. The world-building and scenery is amazing; you feel the cold and snow and see the charming town of Mapleton before your eyes. And I want to go to Quebec (read the book and you know what I mean).
An Icicle Made for Two is a great sweet and romantic hockey story, with a flowing engaging writing style, a good plot, great world-building and scenery and with two wonderful main characters, a book I loved reading a lot. I cannot wait to read the next book, because at the end there is a sort of prequel to the next book, in which Bill’s rival and former friend has a main role. I can’t wait to read that!
Another hit from JP Sterling. An Icicle Made for Two combines hockey, romance, and later in life love that creates the perfect story. JP brings a well known character from other books and finally gives him the love story he deserves. I will always love MCs who are later in life (meaning 40 or older), finding romance in their lives either again or for the first time. Romance isn’t reserved for those younger than 39, but it does take on a different meaning, I think.
Ruth will always do everything she can to give her son, Noah, the world. His dream of playing hockey professionally is one step closer when she finds out a hockey arena is going to built in her hometown. Even more, the owner wants to establish a hockey team from the area. I loved Ruth’s devotion to her son is incredible. Being a single mom isn’t easy, but Ruth puts her whole heart into providing the best life she can.
Bill is used to getting what he wants. However, when life brings him back home and not necessarily by his own choice, he will make the best of it. Building a new hockey arena and starting a new AHL hockey team is just the distraction he needs. Until he meets Noah and his mom, Ruth. There is an instant connection for Bill and he is determined to get to know Ruth more. The more they get to know each other and spend time together, the more they can’t deny the growing feelings between them.
JP took a character that little was known about and gave him an entire story full of depth, complexity, and emotion. This closed door romance will leave you with sizzling kisses and deep feelings, also highlighting a wonderful mother/son relationship. You will root for both of our MCs to find the love they both deserve. You will root for Noah to earn his dream through all his hard work. This cozy vibe story will leave your heart full and a smile on your face.
As always, review any author notes before reading.
What to Expect: ❄️Single Mom FMC 🏒Hockey Romance ❄️Billionaire Romance 🏒Her Son’s Boss ❄️Later in Life Romance 🏒Widow MMC ❄️Closed Door Romance
This book had my heart melting! We already know Bill from Shot Through the Heart and I've been dying to know his story. I absolutely fell in LOVE with Bill! Ruth & Bill's story was so sweet and swoony! I also loved getting to know a little more about the beginning of the AHL team and Noah. I was hooked from the beginning and I didn't want to put it down. I wanted to call in to work so I could finish it.
Ruth is a single mom with a son named Noah. She's a widow and is trying her best to run her family restaurant and raise her son. He's wanted to play hockey since he was three and she just wants his dream to come true. So when she learns that a billionaire has bought land and will be building an arena for his new AHL team, she knew she had to get her son on that team.
Noah is a sweet kid who has really bad anxiety and struggles with school. But to stay on the team and make the new team he has to keep up with his academics. Thankfully some new meds help him out. But he needs to make this AHL team to make his dreams come true.
Bill has had a heck of a past and now finds himself back in his hometown to build a new arena and start a new AHL team. When he meets Ruth at tryouts with her son Noah, he knows instantly that there is something special about her and her son. As they start spending more time together they realize they might have more than a friendship brewing.
This book was everything you could ask for in a sweet romcom with great characters. I was laughing, swooning like crazy, smiling so much throughout the book and was left with a beautiful happily ever after ending. I can't wait for the next book in this series so I can get Blake's story.
I HIGHLY recommend this book and all of J.P. Sterling's books. She will always put a smile on your face and make sure you have a happily ever after ending,
Thank you J.P. Sterling and Booksprout for allowing me to read this ARC for my honest opinion.
I enjoyed reading this later in life romance. The main characters, Bill and Ruth, are characters with real depth and nuance. Ruth is a single mom of a teenaged son who desperately wants to become a pro hockey player. Even though finances have been tight, and training and hockey equipment are expensive, she has done her utmost best to help her son work toward his dream. We all know moms like her, who are strong, resilient and willing to make sacrifices for their kids. She is a fierce Mama Bear who supports, protects and defends her son unconditionally and selflessly. When Bill comes to her home town and is trying to find players for his new hockey team, she is determined to help her son get his shot at furthering his dream.
Bill has been a bit of an enigma in previous books. Little is known about him other than he is a billionaire owner of hockey team with an intense rivalry with another hockey team owner and that he was once a hockey player himself. This book shows a softer side of Bill…a charming, generous and kind side that he shows to Ruth, the woman who unexpectedly claims his heart. Ruth is a bit leery of relationships, and especially with a billionaire who could make or break her son’s future. As they get to know each other, their unexpected chemistry and connection deepens and leads to something both have been sure was not in their future….love.
This sweet romance was a charming and captivating read and has my full recommendation.
I absolutely loved this later in life sweet romantic hockey romance. Ruth is a widow and a single mother to a raising hockey player. Her son Noah has played since he was 3 years old and she will do almost anything to help him make his dream come true. So when she hears that Bill Baker self-made billionaire and former hockey player is establishing a team in their hometown she knows this is her son's chance to make his dream come true. Little does she know that fate has something in store for her as well. Each little interaction between Bill and Ruth bring these two closer together. It is absolutely sweet and melting to watch these two fight what is right there between them. Ruth has been doing everything to keep her son fighting for his dream she cant jeopardize that but she also feels like it is her time to feel something. Will Bill be able to show her that she can be a mom and a woman again? This was the sweetest most enjoyable read. I was hooked from beginning to end. It was very well written and had me feeling every single emotion that each character was feeling. The author has a very unique way of writing the story that draws you in. Highly recommend.

“In romance novels, people get these fun little meet cutes. Me? I get meet garbage.”
This book completely surprised me in the best way. I was not entirely sure what to expect going in, but it genuinely did not disappoint.
Ruth is an incredibly selfless character. Her son and the diner she runs are her whole world, and she rarely does anything for herself. When her son’s boss challenges her to finally put herself first, things begin to change. Her worry about her son’s career adds tension, leading to some sneaking around that felt very cute and fun to read.
Bill was the perfect MMC. He challenges Ruth, supports her, and never gives up on her. Their connection felt natural and easy to root for.
The story flowed really well, handled heavier topics with care, and balanced nostalgia with plenty of lighter moments. There is no language or blasphemy, making this a great choice for closed door romance readers. 🩷
I love how Ms. Sterling’s book characters intersect with one another. She does a fantastic job in a way giving updates and past characters all the while focusing another couple’s romance.
What you’ll find in this - *sweet romance, kisses only *later in life romance *single, widowed mom *wealthy millionaire man *wonderful son *hockey…and some hockey 😜 *clean, no crude language *a slow burn….no I can’t but yes I do 🤪❤️ *an wonderful HEA
Ruth and Bill are absolutely perfect for each other. I loved their meet cute. I was starting to get a little frustrated with her when she seemed to be so willing to turn away why they had as Bill was expertly patient and sweet. However, I completely respected her for putting her kid first though. That’s a true mother’s love. I also can’t imagine what it would be like to find love after a loss.
I received an advance copy via BookSprout and all my thoughts and opinions are all my own.
This book was absolutely adorable. Ruth, the single mom with a son Noah whose dream is to play hockey, finally gets a chance when billionaire Bill Baker moves back to town to build his own hockey arena and team. Ruth's character doesn't take no for an answer when it comes to her son's future and only Bill is standing in that way. The relationship building for Ruth and Bill is exceptionally sweet with no spice but all the swoon. The only real issues I had with the story is that the author focuses mostly on the two main characters and the FMC's son with very little build up of the world or minor characters. This really only becomes an issue when you realize that the author opens up the story to have a reason to move onto a second book in this series with a small detail that doesn't get resolved by the end of the story. Recommended for anyone looking for a no spice, very sweet single mom meets billionaire hockey romance with all the sweetest moments.
I recently discovered this author in the last quarter of 2025 and fell in love with the writing style! I absolutely love this book!
Ruth was a realistic single-parent FMC - she shows up for her son, puts him first every single time, and still somehow keeps going. She’s such a great mom, and that part of the story honestly meant a lot. As someone who is a single parent herself, I really appreciated this aspect as it felt grounded and relatable.
Bill was absolutely such a fun MMC. Ruth and Bill's awkward run-ins made me chuckle and watching those moments slowly turn into something more was just the best! Nothing felt rushed or forced - definitely a sweet, natural, and genuinely heartwarming read.
This book gave me all the cozy, feel-good vibes, and I finished it, ready to jump into the next read by JP Sterling. I look forward to what else comes in 2026!
An Icicle Made for Two was such a cozy, feel-good read. I flew through it because it was lighthearted, charming, and wonderfully easy to sink into, exactly the kind of book you reach for when you want something comforting and uplifting.
Ruth is a classic overthinker and chronic worrier, but that’s what made her feel so real to me, especially as a mum. Her relationship with her son was one of my favorite parts of the story; it was written with so much warmth and authenticity, and you could really feel the depth of their bond. The romance was equally satisfying, watching the love slowly grow between Ruth and Bill felt natural and heartfelt, with plenty of sweet moments along the way.
Overall, this was a delightful, cozy romance that left me smiling. Perfect if you’re looking for something gentle, relatable, and full of heart. I'm looking forward to the next book.
I was instantly hooked from the very first page. Their meet-cute was hilariously adorable! I felt completely invested in their lives. Ruth is the best mom—not perfect, but someone who will do anything for her son. Bill is down to earth and not at all what you expect from a billionaire. They were both endearing as they navigate their feelings and how that fits with all their baggage.
This book was truly hard to put down. I was on the edge of my seat for the moment they finally gave in to their true desires. Author J. P. Sterling did a masterful job drawing out my emotions and truly made me feel for these characters. This is the best later in life romance I've ever read!

I loved everything about this book! The patience yet perseverance Bill had in pursuing Ruth was everything! Despite being burned in a precious relationship, Bill knew from the start that something was different about Ruth and I loved that he never shut down emotionally. Also, how he took care of her son!
Ruth wants what is best for her son, Noah, and has sacrificed so much for him. It’s his dream to play hockey professionally and a new AHL team is coming to their small town. She will do anything for him to make the team but she never thought that it would make her dreams come true too. Definitely give this book a shot!

As always this is a brilliant story. When a new stadium is being built for an AHL team Ruth knows she needs to get her son on the team. Being a single mom she supports her son as much as she can, Noah has wanted to play hockey since was three so this was important for her to do for him. Bill is back to his hometown and plans to start a new team after his stadium is built. Helping to achieve his dreams he befriends Ruth and helps Noah. But sometimes friends can become more, even a little later in life. This is a sweet clean easy to read story that I just couldn't put down. It's also nice having the background from previous books and characters to help completely build the story
Her son was her world Sucha sweet story of finding love later in life. Ruth lost her husband when her son, Noah, was little. Since then he has been her world. Now Noah is eighteen, a professional hockey team is coming to their town, and he wants to try out. When she mistakes the owner, Bill, for a janitor, she has no way to know what she is starting. Noah gets on the team but she becomes the focus of Bill’s attentions. But he is her son’s boss. What if that affects Noah’s chances? What if he loses interest? And where will Noah fit in all this? A wonderful, sweet book that will pull you in. I received an early copy and this is my honest review.
Grab a box of tissues because you will need them from chapter one. Ruby's love for her son, Noah, and how she's afraid to love again after losing her husband years ago will bring tears to your eyes as Bill tries to break down her walls.
This is a truly lovely slow burn romance as Bill shows persistence and patience at winning Ruby's heart. It seriously will hit you in all the feels.
And, the title of this book is perfect and really highlights a key moment in this book. It makes my heart warm in the best possible way.

If you're looking for a great cuddle-under-a-blanket and just read book, this is definitely the one. From the first page, I was hooked! Ruth is a single mom, trying to do what's right for her son, encourage him to chase his dreams. When the AHL team moves in, she knows that this is a really great opportunity for Noah. Little did she know the coach would always be so handsome and so, well sweet. But why would he be interested in her? After the team gives Noah the chance of a lifetime, thanks to Bill's encouragement. Their romance blossoms and she finds herself being in tough territory, the chance to love again. This book is by far one of my favorite books of 2025!
'An Icicle Made for Two is a billionaire, single mom, sweet hockey romcom with HEA that is filled with that “we shouldn’t—but we totally might” tension.'
The characters drove the storyline and they were so very appealing and likeable and perfect together. Plot was well written and developed. World building was excellent and solidly drawn. All in all a great start to the series. Enjoyed immensely and highly recommend.

If I ever need a second chance romance, I hope I can find a Bill! What a charming guy I kept thinking it was one of those stories where he’s too good to be true, and he’s going to turn out to be a jerk. He was definitely too good and was true. Ruth had done and sacrificed everything for her son, now he’s 18 and it’s time she lived life for herself. This is a clean, entertaining, delightful story I enjoyed the characters and the banter, especially when she mistakes Bill for a custodian. Great read. Looking forward to Blake’s story. I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
I absolutely loved this sweet, clean story. Dedicated, loving mom Ruth, who has done everything to support her son, Noah, in his love of hockey. So, when the new AHL team moves to town, she wants him to achieve his dream. Bill is the new team owner. The meet-cute was so funny, she thought he was a janitor. This is such a delightful story of a mid-life couple and the struggles of a kid. The banter is fun, it is sweet and swoony, and the bonus epilogue gave me a good laugh. Such a fantastic story that you don’t want to miss.
Loved the characters in this story. Bill is pretty dreamy and very patient. Ruth is very dedicated to her son and they have a good relationship but she does hold on tight. Just when I started to get frustrated with her, she did an about-face with an epiphany of understanding and my frustration was gone as quickly as it came up. It was a nice change of pace that her son was 18 and old enough to be on his own even though he still lived at home. It was just a little bit different than what I typically read. It was an enjoyable read.
I love this story! Bill and Ruth are fantastic characters, and I enjoy the theme of dating in their older age. The romance is delightful, and each date is both exciting and fun—full of chemistry but still a clean read. I was so engrossed in the story that I didn't even realize it was 2:00 AM. And the trip they took? Oh my goodness, it was the most romantic experience ever! From beginning to end, this is a fabulous story that left me wanting more. Was given a complimentary copy. All opinions are my own.
I received a digital ARC of this book. If you enjoy Hallmark movies you will enjoy this story. Ruth is a single mom of a hockey playing son, and she owns a diner. Billionaire, former NHL player Bill Baker is coming to their small town to start an AHL team. Ruth is excited for the possibilities for her son Noah, what she doesn’t realize is there might be a happy ending for her too. This cute he falls first story will keep you turning the pages routing for Ruth to allow herself some happiness too.
An icicle made for two by @authorjpsterling ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ What a sweet closed door romance. When you have lived your whole adult life putting love to the side for one reason or another, it’s hard to let someone new come into your life and turn that emotion back on. Trusting someone new after you have been hurt is one of the hardest things you will ever do it in life. But this book was so beautifully written and the raw emotions from these characters was perfect. I cannot wait to see what happens next 💥
I have always been curious about Bill Baker’s story and this definitely did not disappoint! It’s such a cute, heartwarming story and the characters couldn’t be more adorable together!
Both Bill and Ruth have been hurt, Bill by his girlfriend leaving him for his best friend and Ruth by her husband passing away, so neither of them are looking for a relationship. The sparks are flying though and there is immediate chemistry between them that they can’t deny. I love their playful banter and there are so many sweet moments throughout the book.
I have been a big fan of this small town and their hockey team. I enjoyed seeing things from the beginning and I can’t wait to read Blake Anton’s book and see things from his perspective.
I really am settling nicely into my hockey romance era, and this one fit so perfectly! Ruth and Bill are so sweet together, even if it takes Ruth a long time to figure that out. She’s so much like me, a people pleaser, always putting everyone else first, and I practically whooped aloud at the nail salon when she finally went on a date with Bill! Just the right amount of drama with a beautiful HEA to finish it out! I loved the cameos from characters in other books and look forward to the next one! 🏒🏒🏒🏒🏒
An Icicle Made for Two is a charming, later in life, sports romance. Ruth is a fantastic mom to her teen son, Noah. It is wonderful to finally learn more about Bill Baker, billionaire owner of the Mapleton hockey team. I love seeing this softer side of Bill and understood Ruth's hesitation to get involved with someone who holds the key to her son's future. Ms. Sterling once again wrapped me up in one if her worlds, held my interest from page one, and delivered a wonderful book filled with some laughs, a lot of love and family.
