He has called to her all her life, but she could never reply...
Midonia, a freelance interplanetary transporter, is on thin ice after a fatal accident on the job. So she doesn’t argue when she’s given the tedious task of flying devout Sister Irena to a remote fringe planet, where a tiny religious colony worships an enigmatic deity called Anguish.
Until now.
When a solar flare grounds her ship, Midonia finds herself stuck with the cult-like sisters. Even worse, he comes to her in the night, his familiar voice louder than ever. He invades her mind with his hunger, sparking a ravenous obsession that will be near-impossible to escape.
Meg Smitherman writes science fiction, fantasy, and horror books (all of which involve kissing). She studied Creative Writing at Brunel University London, where she obtained both her MA and a staggering amount of student loan debt. When not writing, Meg spends her time playing video games, reading fan fiction, and couch rotting. Based in Los Angeles, she shares her life with a chihuahua, a cat, and a handsome Englishman.
another BANGER from Meg Smitherman!!!! Had the absolute PLEASURE of getting a very early copy of this so im forgoing a star rating since it’s technically still being edited but YALL!!!!
CULTS? ALIENS? ROMANCE? MURDER, MAYBE IDK????
In typical Meg Smitherman fashion, I wish this book had been 300 pages longer. How she was able to enthrall me so fast while also making me feel so wildly unsettled is such an insane skill.
This almost felt like it could have been Thrum-adjacent and I am OBSESSED with that idea.
No one compares to Meg Smitherman in writing the little details that really bring a character or scene to life. I was immediately sucked into Midonia's world and invested in her, her job, her desire, and her journey. In true Meg Smitherman fashion, Midonia's journey wouldn't be complete without some psychological trauma and body horror that makes you question yourself and why you kind of like it. Highly recommend Fervor (along with anything and everything from the mind of Meg).
My goodness, should I be surprised that Meg has left me in a mindf*ck once again with her novella?? I guess not, this novella lived up to my expectations and more. I’m still reeling hours later from the ending, pondering what I just read.
If you loved Meg’s other novellas then you’ll truly enjoy this one. Especially with so many layers to unpack in such a short book. However, I felt like I read a novel twice as long with how much happened and developed. 😂
Now excuse me while I try to figure out wtf I just read in the nicest way possible. Especially when I’m still trying to figure out that ending. 🫡
I am gonna have nightmares for WEEKS. Beautiful nightmares. But definitely nightmares and it is so worth it. I literally just finished and my heart is pounding in my chest and I feel like my skin is vibrating. This book is full of electricity and beautiful elegant visual prose and underneath the words is a sense of yearning that flows like an undercurrent the entire way through. I don't know what magic Meg has wrought but it has twisted up inside me and left me spellbound. This is a masterpiece of indulgent gothic horror.
SO good. The cultists were absolutely terrifying and Anguish’s planet is so perfectly unsettling. As with all of Meg Smitherman’s novellas, she packs such a punch in such a short amount of time with fully fledged-out characters, disturbing imagery, and tremendously elegant writing.
