He’s my best friend’s brother. My billionaire boss. And now… my fake husband
I walked into his restaurant needing a paycheck. Now I’m his fake wife. And if I’m not careful, I might just fall for the man I hate.
James Hamilton is grumpy. Emotionally unavailable. Impossible to reach. He’s also my best friend’s brother. The man who broke my heart without even trying. Now he’s a world-famous chef. Well known for his brilliance.
Working for him is my chance at the career of my dreams. But when he calls me out in front of his entire staff. I decide to leave. But James stops me with an offer I never saw coming. A marriage of convenience to secure the future of his culinary empire.
In return, he will pay off my debts and help my family. I should refuse. Instead, I say yes.
His rules are simple. This is a contract. There will be no feelings. No expectations. No future.
I agree to keep things strictly professional. But the longer I share his home and answer to the title of his wife, the harder it is to pretend this is just business.
And when he lets me see the man behind the reputation, I start to wonder if this fake marriage is the most real thing I have ever known...

This book was a freaking masterpiece and I’m in tears as I’m finishing it! I read the prequel to this book “The Unwilling Love” which is not needed to understand the story but I encourage you to read to it because it just changes the entire vibe and adds so much to the story. The Unwilling Bride takes place 5 years after the prequel and a lot has changed. James Hamilton going from a Marine General to a 3 Michelin Star Chef doesn’t discount the bucketload of trauma he got, yet he still cannot control his feelings for Harper. The quiet yearning in this book had me screaming because he is sooo GONE for her. The hair tie scene was just pure agony and perfection. She’s his new sous chef and when they have a scandal he marries her (may not have been the most logical decision but he’s a man in love who doesn’t know it yet). I love how they try to be“professionals” in the kitchen and keep their marriage as “just a business arrangement” but tense longing glances across the room say much more than that. Their story is emotionally cheated and there are so many obstacles, physical and mental, on their road to happiness. But there’s not doubt their HEA was earned with blood, sweat and tears. There’s so much character development in this book too. It’s around 600 pages yet it didn’t feel a second too long, in fact it even felt short because of how emotional and moving thier story was. Seeing James go from “Ice Commander” in the kitchen to a much nicer boss (head chef) and complete softy for his wife at home changed me forever. I love how Harper was not afraid to put herself first and make the hard decisions for their relationship, she has so much strength and is such an inspiring character. James went through so much and I love the very accurate depiction of OCD and PTSD. I cried and cried and cried my way through this entire book but it was worth it to see how he starts letting go of his 10 foot tall emotional barriers and lets himself be vulnerable and loved. It was such a beautiful story that I definitely will never forget and I give it a 5/5
I edited this book for the author, and we’re both very happy with the result. Both Harper and James have been recurring characters in other books in this series, and we always knew they’d have their own story. It was nice to finally read it.
James, the Michelin-starred chef from every other book, is the typical alpha male featured in Steele’s books—he is unable to feel or express emotions and covers his insecurities with his macho behavior. Personally, I have no patience for that, but Steele always manages to make me love these alphahole characters by the end of the book.
Harper is an independent and driven woman who doesn’t owe her success to anyone else. She’s a good friend, but she’s also a workaholic. This works out well for her relationship with James, who hires her and makes her his sous chef. Unfortunately, he finds it nearly impossible to praise anything she (or anyone else) does in the kitchen. With her help, he learns to soften his approach to people.
After an emotional encounter James and Harper shared years ago, both have found it impossible to forget the other. James, of course, has more successfully buried his feelings. Harper chastises herself for still feeling something he clearly doesn’t feel in return. The first part of the book is about her wanting to quit because he’s such a horrible boss. Until finally, he proposes a fake marriage.
I’ll be honest; I’m a little weary of this trope. How many friends can experience the same thing and still think it won’t turn into love in the end? At least, it’s acknowledged that it has worked out for other couples. In other words, it’s not unreasonable for Harper to hope it works out for them, too.
Once again, the male character, as a result of his inability to acknowledge his feelings, drives away the female character. Harper decides she can no longer live with a man who doesn’t love her. She confesses her feelings and gives him the opportunity to reciprocate. He doesn’t, but she feels better for having spoken her mind.
"A feeling of lightness pours into my chest. Something inside me unspools. I wondered how it would feel to say it aloud. Wondered if it would be terrifying to share my innermost feelings. But now that I have, I feel happy. A rush of warmth spreads through me. Joy trembles under my skin, and for a second, I understand what it means to be weightless. As if loving him and saying it out loud has untethered me from the ground."
James, of course, eventually comes around, admitting, "I spent my whole life building the rules by which I lived. They were the only thing that made the world stop spinning so fast. But I'd rather live in the chaos with you than be safe in the silence without you."
He also admits to himself: “The restraint I've spent a lifetime building, the same one that helps keep my OCD in check, that got me through being adopted, through loss, through war, has its teeth in me. It does not know the difference between keeping me safe and keeping me from her."
I love the descriptions of Harper’s niece. I had trouble with her being only ten years old, as I felt her actions would be more appropriate for a tween, but that doesn’t take away from the descriptions. “At ten, she’s already all gangly limbs and sharp elbows, a sketch of a person not quite filled in.”
“Today, she’s in full goth ensemble: ripped black stockings under frayed denim shorts, and a purple off-the-shoulder top that looks like she attacked it with fabric shears herself. Around her neck sits a velvet choker with a silver bat, and her fingernails are chipped battlefields of black polish. She looks like a miniature Victorian ghost who’s just discovered punk rock."
James has a debilitating case of OCD, compounded by PTSD suffered in combat. When he finally allows himself to feel, it’s miraculous:
"I love you." I whisper the words against her lips like a confession. Like a vow. Like the truth I've been choking on for weeks. Months. Years. Love is the one emotion I can't control. Surrendering to it feels inevitable. There's a relief in it I didn't expect. Like drawing in the first breath after surfacing from a free dive. Like finding a piece of myself I didn't know was missing until she filled the space. Like becoming something more than the hollow shell I've been operating inside. "I love you." I say it again.
That quote seems like a great place to end this review. The book is another example of Steele’s ability to take a hard-to-love (hard to even like) male character and turn him into a romantic hero. It’s fun to see James fall, just like all of his friends before him. And it’s great to see Harper get the HEA she deserves.

Tropes: •best friend’s brother •matrimonio por conveniencia •jefe x empleada •’my wife’ •proximidad forzada •age gap
English ;
You’re telling me this man studied the same career she told him about five years ago just because he hoped that if they shared the same profession, he’d find her again someday?! 😭 And they only shared one night and one kiss together!!! Stop it. This man 😭✨

Tropes: • best friend’s brother • marriage of convenience • boss x employee • “my wife” • forced proximity • age gap
Harper 👩🏼🍳: She’s a chef who has just lost her job, and while searching for something new, she ends up at James’s restaurant — the man she hasn’t been able to forget since that night five years ago. The moment she sees him, she decides to leave, but after thinking it through, she realizes having a job matters more than running away from him 🤍
James 👨🏻🍳: A cold and demanding man who runs his kitchen with the same discipline he had in the Marines. After going through hell during his service, he decides to become a chef because of Harper — because one night she told him she was a chef. He thought that if they shared the same career, he’d have a better chance of seeing her again someday 🥹
Story 📝: Five years ago, Harper and James shared one unforgettable night, one kiss, and a connection that never faded despite the years apart. When Harper shows up at James’s restaurant looking for a job, he doesn’t hesitate for a second to hire her that very same day. Because of course, that had been his intention ever since he saw her application. He knew that if he hired her, he’d finally have her close to him and could satisfy the obsession he’d carried for her for the past five years ✨💌
Thoughts 💭: I’m so relieved Harper and James finally got their happy ending 🥹 I loved their story and how the book was filled with emotional highs and lows. Although I have to admit, it was hard not to stay mad at James sometimes — he really was an idiot to Harper. And the wedding situation plus the way he made her work? hahaha 😂 I was laughing so hard. But overall, I absolutely love this author’s writing style, and I can’t wait to read Tristan’s
L. Steele’s The Unwilling Bride made me realize that nothing says “this is definitely a terrible idea” quite like agreeing to fake-marry the emotionally constipated billionaire chef who once shattered your heart and now critiques your knife skills in front of an entire kitchen staff. Honestly, this book fed me angst, tension, emotional damage, and enough possessive “my wife” energy to send me into a full fictional spiral.
Published by L. Steele, thank you to the author for the gifted ARC. This was the kind of romance that sneaks up on you between all the simmering resentment, stolen glances, and emotionally unavailable behavior until suddenly you’re sitting there at midnight emotionally attached to a grumpy chef with OCD, PTSD, and approximately three functioning emotional coping skills.
James Hamilton is not soft. This man communicates through criticism, control, and terrifying eye contact across a professional kitchen. Underneath all that perfectionism and emotional distance though? He’s deeply wounded, overwhelmed by his own mind, and honestly one accidental forehead touch away from completely unraveling. Watching him slowly lose control over his feelings for Harper felt like witnessing a Michelin-starred disaster in the best possible way.
And Harper? I adored her. She’s hardworking, loyal, exhausted, stubborn, and trying so hard to hold everything together for herself and her family while still chasing her dream career. She refuses to let James bulldoze her spirit even when their chemistry is practically setting the restaurant on fire. Their dynamic absolutely thrives on that grumpy x sunshine tension where every argument feels two seconds away from either a kiss or a nervous breakdown.
The fake marriage trope here worked ridiculously well because the emotional intimacy hit just as hard as the steam. Shared space. One bed. Forced closeness. Quiet domestic moments. The accidental tenderness absolutely wrecked me. But what really stayed with me was how thoughtfully the story handled James’s mental health struggles. His OCD and PTSD weren’t treated like quirky personality traits—they shaped the way he moved through the world, loved people, and protected himself from getting hurt.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✨ 4.5 stars
“I’d rather live in the chaos with you than be safe in the silence without you.”
This book is for readers who love emotionally unavailable men slowly realizing they are catastrophically in love, dramatic kitchen tension, billionaire romance with actual emotional depth, and heroines who refuse to settle for half-hearted love. Also… can we collectively agree that fictional chefs are becoming a public safety issue at this point?

This contemporary billionaire boss forbidden best friend's brother second-chance hate-to-love marriage of convenience workplace romance is page-turning with exceptional world-building and characters who are an alpha male, James Hamilton, (the Michelin starred chef and former Royal Marine, who is obsessive possessive billionaire hero, emotionally wounded and a grumpy, neurodivergent former MC Marine, a curvy FMC female heroine, harper Richie, Phoenix Davenport's best friend, who is sunshine, who are both captivating and realistic. Their journey is enthralling with the unwilling bride, explicit romance that is consumed by steamy sizzling passion, lust, desire, and spice, with all the feelings to leave readers breathless and begging for more, "my wife," found family, close proximity, one bed, no cheating, very satisfying HEA, a contract, strong women go toe-to-toe with powerful billionaires...and love never follows the rules, suspense that is sure to leave readers on the edge of their seats, chaos/drama, heartfelt emotions/emotional depth, action, adventure, and more. I recommend reading this book by an extraordinary author who knows how to captivate her readers' hearts and attention with the unwilling bride and an explicit billionaire boss, a forbidden best friend's brother, a second-chance hate-to-love marriage of convenience workplace romance that is sure to transport readers into a world that is wildly lustful, intriguing, and unforgettable.
The Unwilling Bride absolutely consumed me. I went into this expecting a fun marriage of convenience romance and instead got emotionally steamrolled by two people who were clearly made for each other from the very beginning.
James and Harper had INSANE chemistry. The kind where every argument feels like foreplay and every tiny act of care hits like a freight train. The tension in this book was simmering constantly, like a pot threatening to boil over for 400 pages straight. I was kicking my feet one minute and clutching my chest the next.
And James?? This grumpy, emotionally constipated billionaire chef with all his rules and walls and control issues had NO business being this attractive. The man says “my wife” one time and suddenly I’ve forgotten every thought I’ve ever had. Possessive, protective, deeply wounded, secretly soft underneath all that sharpness… L. Steele really said “here’s your new obsession” and she was correct.
Harper was SUCH a strong FMC too. I loved that she didn’t just roll over for him. She challenged him constantly and brought this warmth and light into his cold, carefully controlled world. Their dynamic was chef’s kiss. Watching James slowly unravel around her while trying desperately not to catch feelings was delicious torture.
And the forced proximity??? The one bed??? Living together while pretending this fake marriage means nothing?? PLEASE. Every scene between them crackled. You could feel the longing leaking through every conversation. Half the time I wanted to scream JUST KISS ALREADY at my kindle.
But what really got me was the emotional depth underneath all the banter and tension. James carrying around all that hurt and loneliness absolutely broke me. The neurodivergent rep felt so thoughtfully done too, and it added so much to his character and the way he moved through the world. Once Harper started seeing the real man beneath the reputation, my heart was done for.
Also the FOOD descriptions?? Dangerous. I was reading this hungry and suffering. James cooking for Harper was somehow more intimate than half the romance scenes I’ve ever read. This man plating emotions like Michelin-starred therapy sessions 😭
The Hamilton family already has me hooked and I need every single book immediately. This was emotional, addictive, swoony, frustrating in the best way, and ridiculously romantic once those walls finally started coming down.
Fake marriage supremacy remains undefeated and James and Harper just joined the hall of fame 🖤🍷✨
Harper Richie is a chef struggling to get a position after her last restaurant closed. She is helping raise her niece and has a dream to open her own restaurant.
James Hamilton is a grumpy, exacting Michelin star chef and a retired Royal Marine. He is obsessed with being the best, has earned 3 Michelin stars for his restaurant and earned the nickname The Ice Commander from all who work for him.
A chance encounter 5 years ago with her best friends brother, James Hamilton, gives her the best night of her life. The chemistry between James and Harper is unbelievable and they didn't even have sex. Unfortunately James walks away back to the Royal Marines and Harper never forgets him.
Five years later after their first encounter, Harper is interviewing at James's restaurant. She ends up getting the Sous Chef position but has to now prove herself to James and all the staff that she deserves the position. James does not let up and is tyrannical in the kitchen and especially to Harper. James never forgot his night with Harper but does not feel like he is good enough for her.
What does James do when a viral video from an ex-employee causes his investors to consider pulling their funding and then his grandmother gives an ultimatum of marry in 6 months or you lose your inheritance but ask Harper for a fake marriage. In return he will pay off her debts which will help her family and get her one step closer to her own restaurant.
The rules are simple...
Fake marriage
Seperate bedrooms
No feelings
Contract only
No future
Marriage of convenience only
Read what happens when the line between fake and real become blurry. When feelings start to develop will Harper see past all the walls James has put up and be able break them down? Will James realize he can show emotion and trust someone fully? You have met James and Harper in previous books and it is now finally the time for their story. A billionaire romance that has it all and will keep you up reading from page one.
L. Steele did it again! I read the prequel to the book, a Novella, The Unwilling Love which also got 5⭐️! While you don't need to read it, I think you should, it gives you a glimpse into how James and Harper met 5 years ago.
James was a Marine, now 5 years later after meeting Harper, he's out of the Marines and owns his own 3 Michelin star restaurant. He was inspired to become a chef by Harper, but also in hopes his paths would cross with her again. He's not a soft man, from the Marines, he suffers PTSD and OCD. His communication skills are brutal to keep those things hidden. There's so much emotion under his critical, and controlling ways he runs his restaurant. Enter Harper, to apply for a job at his restaurant only to be hired as his sous chef.
Harper, strong and independent and has dreams to own her restaurant while helping her single mom sister have a good life. She holds it all together and is exhausted. James treats her like any other employee, but she will not let him see how hard he's being on her bothers her.
Now, James' inheritance is threatened of he's not married in 6 months. Enter your marriage of convenience to Harper. Being married and living under the same roof introduces Harper to a much softer side of James and she can't hide her feelings. However, he's still can....so frustrating. Eventually they will give in to those feelings. James OCD gives him the cutest/sweetest quirks...collecting Harper's hair ties when she loses them. When he finally breaks and tells her this, its the sweetest scene.
This story has so much emotion, heartfelt warmth, angst, intimacy, love, family support, strength and friendship. It's just EVERYTHING you need!
✨️Marriage of convenience ✨️Best friends brother ✨️Boss/employee ✨️Grumpy Sunshine ✨️One Bed ✨️Close proximity ✨️Found Family ✨️HEA!!!!
The Unwilling Bride served everything I love in a billionaire romance and plated it like a five-course emotional feast.
James Hamilton is the kind of hero who walks into a room carrying storms in his pockets. Gruff, emotionally barricaded, painfully intense… yet every tiny crack in that armor felt addictive. The neurodivergent representation added depth to his character without defining him entirely, and watching him slowly unravel around Harper was chef’s kiss perfection.
And Harper? Absolute sunshine wrapped in stubborn determination. She’s strong without losing her softness, vulnerable without ever feeling weak. Their chemistry had that delicious hate-to-love tension where every argument feels one heartbeat away from a kiss or a complete emotional collapse.
The fake marriage trope here was executed flawlessly. Shared spaces. One bed. The accidental intimacy. The possessive “my wife” energy that had me internally screaming into the void at 2 a.m. 🫠
What really made this story shine was the emotional layering beneath the romance. The grief, the pressure of expectations, the fear of wanting someone too much… it all felt raw and believable. James and Harper didn’t just fall in love. They peeled each other open like carefully guarded secrets.
And the FOUND FAMILY dynamics? Warm enough to melt the coldest billionaire heart.
If you love: 💍 Marriage of convenience 🔥 Grumpy x sunshine 👨🍳 Billionaire chef hero 💼 Workplace romance tension 🛏️ One bed chaos ❤️ Emotionally wounded men who become obsessed with their wives
…this book belongs on your TBR immediately.
L. Steele really cooked with this one. Literally and emotionally.
The Unwilling Bride by L. Steele is an absolute must-read! If you love high-stakes culinary drama, forced proximity, and a hero who is the ultimate "Ice Commander," this book will completely consume you.
The story kicks off with a memorable night out between Harper and her friend's brother, James. The chemistry between them is immediate and undeniable as James shows her his favorite spots, but as a Royal Marine about to deploy, he chooses to walk away with just a kiss rather than break her heart.
Fast forward a few years: James is now a fierce, formidable 3-star Michelin chef, and Harper is walking into his kitchen for a job interview. The tension is palpable from the moment she watches him fire two workers on the spot and name her his new sous chef. The attraction they both thought was buried flares right back to life, but James is determined to fight it.
When a grandmother's strict inheritance demand forces James to find a wife, and a viral social media video of a heated kitchen argument threatens his restaurant's funding, James offers Harper a deal: become his wife, and he will fund her niece's private school tuition.
What follows is a brilliant, turbulent, and scorching-hot ride. The kitchen isn't the only thing heating up—the dynamic between Harper and James flips from fiery passion to frosty distance in a minute. Harper is determined to thaw the Ice Commander's heart, but when she finally says those three magic words and gets silence in return, the emotional stakes skyrocket.
L. Steele delivers an incredible, fast-paced romance with fantastic tension and deep emotion. Can Harper truly melt James's icy exterior and make him hers for real? You’ll have to read it to find out! I couldn't put it down. Highly recommend!
Being part of the L.Steele ARC team has meant that I was lucky enough to read this book early and after reading the Novella before this and already meeting James & Harper in the Davenport series I was not disappointed.
The Hamiltons is a new spin off series from the Davenports, so we still have billionaire, possessive MMC's and curvy independently fierce FMC's with the main trope marriage of convenience along with each book having its own micro tropes.
James is a very good friend to the Davenports and his sister is married to one of the brothers, Harper is best friends with James sister. After not seeing each other for 5 years she goes to interview to work and cook at his Michelin star restaurant, hoping that the 1 night they met and the connection they both felt wouldn't still be there after all this time.
James made sure Harper would interview at his restaurant and gives her the sous chef position (which she is qualified for) and determined to not show her that hes still effected by her he makes her working life hell but she wont quit she needs this job to help support her sister and niece and eventually open her own restaurant.
After their argument is filmed and goes viral James spins this as a lovers tiff and they are actually i love and getting married, so he can keep his investors happy and also get access to his inheritance which his grandmother wont release until he is married. Harper agrees as he offers to pay for the special school her niece needs and clear all her debts.
Its not long before the connection they never lost sparks and being fake married feels a lot more real.
Harper new boss and her best friend brother is a difficult man to please. He demands perfection in his kitchen and while hard on her she does learn from him.The only thing standing in the way is her attraction to him, will she fight it?James was waiting for Harper a long time,he stil think about that night five years ago when he first meet her.Dealing with his own demons, being pushed into a corner by his grandmother he needs a wife, and who's better than Harper who also gain something from it?Both just think that a contract and being married will be easy, but feelings never are, will those two give this marriage a real chance?
It was a great steamy romance that felt like a lovely dish just waiting to be sampled. At the beginning I was not sure if it's for me,the kitchen and work part was going on a little bit longer then I liked, but I'm so glad that I continue reading as when the story pick up it was so consuming that I could not put it down.James was really struggling with his feeling for Harper, being always in control he could not let loose.Harper was attracted to him,and while his opposite she really showed the strenght in this relationship.I liked she didn't let James get away with everything. The spicy parts were really steamy and I liked the way they tease each other,it was hot and fun.At times emotional,at times spicy and heartwarming this first in the series book left me wanting more from this author.
If you like best friend brother and boss steamy romance with a depth, this is it.
Please read warnings first.
Thank you author for arc,my review is honest and my own.
James Hamilton was on leave from the Royal Marines five years ago when he met Harper Richie met at the nightclub . He was struck by her beauty and her zest for life. She lit up something in him which had begun to die, thanks to the violence he had seen as a Marine. When it turned out she was his sister’s best friend he insisted on driving her home. They spend the night talking and taking in the sights of London. It ended with a kiss and a connection between them that shock James. He could not control his emotions around her and that scared him. He cut off the possibility of anything between them before it could even begin. After his last tour of duty that leaves him with PTSD, he comes home and becomes a chef because she told him that is what she was and he envied her happiness. Now she is his Sous Chef. They are side by side all day and he thrives on watching her get frazzled because of him. He exhausts Harper and leaves her aching in ways that have nothing to do with his demands on the job. There is something real between them and he is unwilling to give it a chance. This is an intriguing marriage by contract billionaire romance. James and Harper’s chemistry is off the charters, but James is unable to commit to anyone as to him that means there is a possibility of losing them. Emotions are his enemy as they fuel his OCD. The only way he stays functional is locking everything down. Harper needs to break through that if they are to have a real relationship. Definitely a page turner that has me looking forward to what is next in this new series.
The Unwilling Bride is the first book in the Hamiltons series by L. Steele. I had previously read the Unwilling Love novella, and I couldn’t wait to read more about Harper and James. I really enjoyed this book. With this being a marriage of convenience book but also knowing they have a very brief history that made them both develop feelings was a bit of a twist on the popular trope. Harper needs a job, after the restaurant she worked at closed. After sending her resume to many restaurants in town, she gets a call from The Edge, for her to come in for an interview. The Edge’s owner and chef is none other than her best friend’s brother James, that she met five years ago and instantly fell for. Now that James is out of the Marines, he has decided to become a chef, because he loves to cook. With his military background and OCD, his kitchen is run like the military. Everything must be perfect. Then walks Harper, and his world starts to shift. I love the dynamic between Harper and James; she takes everything he throws at her and doesn’t back down. James is extra hard on her because he is trying to keep his emotions in check. But that can only last for so long. The story line was great, and I couldn’t wait to see what was going to happen next. Even though it is a 600-page book, it was an easy read. I do feel like it could have been at least 100 pages shorter, there was a lot of inter dialogue throughout the entire book that was very repetitive and wordy. Otherwise, it was great.
The Unwilling Bride completely consumed me from the very first chapter. This book delivers everything I love in a romance: explosive chemistry, emotional tension, obsession, vulnerability, and a hero so emotionally repressed that watching him unravel for the woman he loves becomes addictive.
James Hamilton is the definition of a tortured alpha hero. Cold, possessive, controlling, and emotionally damaged, yet every action screams how deeply gone he is for Harper. The push and pull between them was intense in the best possible way. Their kitchen scenes alone had more tension than most romances entirely.Harper was equally incredible. I loved that she never allowed herself to become small for him. She challenged him, stood her ground, and demanded real love instead of settling for emotional scraps. Watching her growth throughout the story was just as satisfying as the romance itself.
The marriage of convenience trope was executed perfectly. Once they were forced into close proximity, the emotional walls started cracking, and every vulnerable moment between them hit harder. Beneath all the angst and possessiveness is a story about healing, trust, and finally allowing yourself to be loved. And the ending? Absolutely worth every moment. James finally choosing Harper completely, supporting her dreams, and becoming the husband she deserved gave this story such a rewarding emotional payoff.
*The Unwilling Bride* is the first book in the new series *The Hamiltons*. James and Harper felt a connection on the night they first met, but five years later, everything has changed. After leaving the Marines and opening his restaurant, James has closed himself off emotionally. He has become controlling and critical in managing his business.
When Harper comes in for an interview, he hires her as his sous chef and ensures that she receives no special treatment. Determined not to give in to his demanding demeanor, Harper challenges him and stands up for herself, refusing to let him see how much his words affect her.
However, when one of their heated arguments goes viral, his grandmother gives him an ultimatum: marry within six months or lose his inheritance. The only person James considers proposing a fake marriage to is Harper. He views it strictly as a business arrangement.
As time goes on, their walls crumble, and emotional barriers break down. They find themselves revealing their vulnerable sides to one another. What begins as a fake marriage starts to feel increasingly real and right, as their connection and support for one another grow stronger with each passing day.
Their attraction and chemistry intensify, leading to a slow-burning love that is both heartwarming and emotionally healing. This journey between James and Harper makes for an enjoyable read.
I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
The Unwilling Bride by L. Steele was a slow burn done absolutely right.
I’m usually not the biggest fan of slow burns, but this one was so worth the wait. The tension, the longing, and the push and pull between these two kept me completely hooked. It never felt overdone or frustrating, just the perfect amount to keep me turning pages.
Now, I wanted to smack the MMC more than once because of how dense he was acting, but that only made the payoff even sweeter. Watching him slowly come to terms with his feelings was both maddening and incredibly satisfying.
From steam in the kitchen to steam in the bedroom, this book delivered. Once the romance finally ignited, the chemistry was off the charts and the spice was absolutely perfect.
I also loved the author’s inclusion of mental health. The MMC’s struggles with OCD and PTSD were handled with care and authenticity, and I’m fairly certain the FMC dealt with anxiety as well. It added so much depth to the story and offered a meaningful glimpse into the daily realities of living with these challenges.
The writing was smooth, engaging, and effortlessly pulled me into the story. Emotional, steamy, and beautifully written, The Unwilling Bride is a slow burn romance that was worth every second of the wait.
While you don’t need to read the prequel, The Unwilling Love, I highly recommend it, it adds so much depth to this story.
Harper Richie is a talented chef trying to rebuild her career after her last restaurant closed, all while helping raise her niece and chasing her dream of opening her own place. James Hamilton is her complete opposite, a grumpy, exacting Michelin-star chef and retired Royal Marine, known as the “Ice Commander” in his kitchen.
Five years earlier, they shared one unforgettable night full of chemistry before James walked away. Now, Harper finds herself working as his new Sous Chef, forced to prove herself under his intense and often ruthless leadership. Despite their past, James keeps his distance, convinced he isn’t good enough for her.
When a viral scandal threatens his restaurant and his grandmother gives him an ultimatum, marry in six months or lose everything, James proposes a fake marriage to Harper. In return, he offers financial security that could help her finally achieve her dream.
The slow-burn tension, quiet yearning, and emotional depth in this story had me hooked. The hair tie scene alone wrecked me. Watching them try to stay “professional” while clearly falling apart for each other was everything.
James’ growth, especially with his struggles with OCD and PTSD, was powerful and emotional. And Harper’s strength and willingness to put herself first made her such an inspiring FMC.
At nearly 600 pages, it never felt too long, I honestly wanted more. This story was raw, moving, and unforgettable.
An emotional, beautifully written romance that will stay with you. Thank you Hambright PR for the ARC.
I'm always so excited when Laxmi publishes a new book. I'm excited about the new MMC. OK, they aren't new new, because they always already appeared in previous books, but still, there are so many secrets around the "new" MMC. I've been hoping for James book for a while. I honestly don't know when he was mentioned the very first time in any of the previous books, but his restaurant "The Edge" and the fact that he belongs to one of the wealthiest families of London made him quickly a "background character". Is that a thing? He's not really a side character, because he never said much... Whatever, I think you understand what I want to say 😉
There is so much depth in James. He isn't "just" a Michelin-starred chef (3 times), he's also broken. He has so many things from his past that have given him a lot of issues. OCD, PTSD, and trust issues 🥺 He feels deeply, but he just can't show it. He can't.
Panty steeling MMC was yesterday, James steels, Harper's... nah, not telling you 😎
Oh, Harper? She's a strong, independent woman, who gives a 💩 that her new book thinks he needs to be an 🍑 in the kitchen 🤣
Thanks to the author for trusting me with an ARC 🩷
There's so much to say about this story, brimming with emotion, conflict, patience, antagonism, and passion. A famous song says, "What's past is past, nothing matters anymore, I've forgotten, I've forgotten," but in this case, nothing had been forgotten. The powerful chemistry was undeniable, raw and ever-present. The so-called Ice Commander was suffering more and more because of Harper, trying to maintain control even as his stability seemed to crumble at every turn. Harper was facing not only lingering feelings but also an environment that felt incredibly hostile. I admired how Harper had grown stronger over the years, the fortitude she was demonstrating in facing the challenge James had become and trying to understand him and not completely lose hope. Several times I found myself deeply moved by the constant stream of emotions, with James's struggle with his OCD and PTSD and Harper's desperate attempt to help, even at the cost of her own suffering. Another thing that caught my attention was the detail in the descriptions of the restaurant's atmosphere, how the action unfolded there, and the protagonists' roles within it. I felt like I was right there with Harper. A promising start to the Hamiltons stories.
Another journey into the wonderful world of L. Steele and the characters she creates. This time the reader learns more about James Hamilton who we have caught glimpses of in some of the previous books. He keeps himself and his emotions on a tight rein, coming across as controlling in all he does and is an absolute perfectionist, even more so where Harper is concerned. The reader has also met Harper before. She is so determined to succeed in her chosen career and is desperate to support her sister and niece. She puts up with so much from James who watches her like a hawk and scrutinises everything she does in his Michelin starred kitchen. These two have a history and neither has forgotten their previous encounter. James and his collection of hair ties is just so poignant. Gradually, little by little, layers are peeled back with Harper pushing James to his emotional limits until he eventually snaps, trusting enough to let go of some of his infamous control. So glad that these two managed to resolve things, albeit with a little help from Margot who seems to have taken a leaf out of Arthur Davenport’s book! Reading “The Unwilling Love” first will provide some context and background to “The Unwilling Bride”.
First book in a new series. This is a continuation of James’ and Harper’s story from the ‘Unwilling Love’ novella. You do not have to have read that first, but I would suggest it as there are several references to their first meeting in the ‘Bride’ book. I really enjoyed this tale of these two, where sparks fly from a restaurant kitchen to the bedroom. James has never forgotten his sister’s best friend from their original encounter five years before. Only now he is a damaged man, shaped by his last experience in the marines when he lost his comrades. Harper is determined to make a success of her career – despite the pressure the now closed off James puts her under! I really liked how L Steele has obviously done a lot of research into the professional catering sphere and how things are done in the kitchen of a top flight restaurant. The two marry in an arrangement so James can get his inheritance, and Harper can finance her niece’s education. It is, ostensibly, a marriage of convenience but the reader is left in no doubt that he chemistry between these two will ensure that that will probably not last! A really good read.
Kicking off the start of a brand new series following the Hamiltons is James - Michelin starred chef, but also former Marine and a tiny bit obsessed with his sisters best friend! He’s all broody, gruff and ridiculously handsome. Harper is his opposite, all sunshine and sass and she never forgot their first encounter 5 yrs ago. Now she’s working in his kitchen, under him and spends more time fighting the tension they have, but like I said, James is a man obsessed and he’s crafted a way to make Harper his wife! It’s a slow burn as we watch James fight his own feelings, Harper has been pretty patient but there’s only so much grump one can take. Despite the hot chemistry they share, and when I say hot, I mean, you’ll need more than a cool drink to calm your blushing, James is his own enemy for his HEA and it takes him a while to pull his socks up (when he's wearing them)! A delicious read to start the series and I can’t wait for more from the Hamiltons.
I voluntarily reviewed a free advance copy of this book provided by the author. The opinions expressed are my own
I enjoyed this book a lot. This is a story about James and Harper who met five years ago and had a connection and a lot of chemistry. He was in the Marines and had to go back when his leave was over. They meet again when she is asked to interview for a position in the kitchen of the restaurant he owns. James is now more closed off than ever and is a miserable person. Harper challenges him every step of the way while working for him. The chemistry is most definitely still there and there is a lot of tension when they are together. James is stubborn and can’t open up and express his feelings for Harper. Harper can only be so patient. ❤️❤️❤️❤️ What you will see in this book: This is a major slow burn.

Love is difficult to find and impossible to live without.
Wow! The wait was so worth it! This captivating read swept me away with its unforgettable characters and emotional depth. I couldn't put this amazing book down! Their chemistry leapt from the pages!
The raw emotions from James and Harper are both heartwarming and profoundly moving as these soulmates find each other after their first encounter five years earlier. They’ve both changed in so many ways and now fate has brought them back together as they struggle through their feelings and what the future may hold.
If you love angsty romance with hot steamy scenes, you will love this tale as much as I have.
Don't miss out on this AMAZING story and make sure you read the prequel, “The Unwilling Love” to see how their story all started!
James Hamilron, the Ice Commander in the kitchen with three Michelin stars to his name. A man with strictly regulated life, no chaos, no divergence, no emotions. Harper aspiring chef who met James years ago and an evening whichkeeps replaying in her head. SHe applies for a job at his restaurant and everything will change for both of them. Their story is epic, intense and emotionally charged . Their HEA will be hard earned with so many emotions and obstacles in their way. Their love story is one of the most eotional one I have ever read in a good way. The OCD and PTSD issues makes you pause and understnd better. Margot Hamilton made pushed and emotionally disconnected man to face his worst fears and come out better for it. Bravo!
This is the story of James Hamilton and Harper Richie.
Grumpy/sunshine, boss/employee, breath play
Finally James story...his history....his unraveling. Harper is exactly the person to unravel him.
He is controlled, unemotional and rude. She is sunshine, love and sweetness.
This book seemed to be less spicy and more growth of character. This wasn't a dark and edgy romance but more of a typical grumpy/sunshine book.
It was well written and definitely worth the read. A very good light steam novel that makes you have a love/hate relationship with the characters. It leaves you with a satisfying HEA and the anticipation of the following books.
Hello, people! First of all, let me mention that this book is the first book in The Hamilton series. There is a novella, The Unwanting Love, in which we meet Harper and James, which I suggest you read before starting this book. So, we see the same heroes here too. This book, as you say, has so much emotion and at the same time so much tension between them that it wins you over. In addition, there are many obstacles. Of course, to tell the truth, in great loves and passions... there are always some because the road is not paved with roses but there is also a great climax. The author's writing is touching, emotional, romantic, captivating and enjoyable.
Thank you very much to the author and Hambright PR for the eARC!
I received an early copy of the book. I loved it. If you know the universe it is set in you know that James Hamilton comes a long way and he was due to get his happy ending. I am glad he did. This story follows James and Harper finally reunited after being seperated for 5 years and how they enter a marriage arrangement( won't give spoilers as to how). The chemistry between them is off the charts everyone could see it and finally he could admit it. Oh and don't forget the 2 stars of the whole story... Margot and Malice they are absolutely amazing( won't give spoilers on the either). Once again L.Steele has written a masterpiece. 10/10 would recommend
