In the war-torn ruins of Eldoria, Jack Ashton, a battle-hardened dragoon, awakens a divine gift that marks him as a Paladin of Solarus. Fleeing the Old World's decay, he rides into Sable Haven—a fragile frontier outpost besieged by undead hordes and savage Wildkin tribes.
There, Sheriff and retired Templar Maxwell Alexander mentors Jack in Holy Magic, teaching him how to unleash radiant fury on ghouls and necromancers. He forges unbreakable bonds with the town's resilient the nurturing baker Bessie, fiery schoolteacher and swordswoman Rosaline, and more.
But when ancient evil unites the Wildkin in a relentless siege against Sable Haven,, Jack must claim his destiny—or watch his new home fall to death and ruin.
This is a very good start to a new series. I like stories of a grizzled warrior who is disillusioned by the war stumbling into a remote town and finding purpose, love, and eventually redemption. Jack is a Dragoon, light cavalry, who has been traveling trying to find peace somewhere. He stumbles onto the town of Sable haven which is being threatened by ghouls the product of wildkins. In trying to save some farmers from death he uses holy magic to kill a ghast, an upgraded ghoul. The town is small only 300 people but their sheriff is a retired Templar Knight and he recognizes the potential in Jack right away. Bessie the town baker, pictured on the cover, though a fighter she is not, sees something in Jack as well. Soon Jack finds himself as deputy sheriff, and gaining the love of a beautiful woman. Wildkins are threatening the town, with Maxwell's training in his new powers (he's the sheriff), will they be enough to save the town?
But there are shadows of our own world that bring a seriousness to the novel that felt it of place. The Wildkin aren't American natives, but they could be. And some of the MC's attitudes seem to echo that. Yes the Wildkin are violent, evil, unrepentant, and nothing like the natives of the new world, but they did serve the role of being there first.
So I enjoyed the book and look forward to any sequals, but there were some uncomfortable moments in the book where my modern day sensibilities rejected the characters' actions.
Wow what an adventure!!!! This is the story I didn't realize, I had been waiting for forever or at least that's how it feels!! The world building is outstanding as we should all expect by now. As well as the wonderful blend of characters the story introduced to this series. What really made it so enjoyable for me was the humbleness of the MC and the guidance we got to experience as he went from war scarred veteran to a man with purpose and so much more. I can't wait for more!!!
I have read many of the works by Mr. King, but this has been my favorite so far. A great cast of characters, who are strong, interesting and well developed. The strength of their faith I found to be quite compelling and felt it added to the tale.
