A Tale of Trial & Torment

Rate this book
With Bastian and his Soul Eaters on the run, Shaye and her friends are on limited time to bring the other kingdoms together before a full-scale war breaks out. But it seems gathering the other rulers won't be as easy as she thought.

Returning to Tronovia, Shaye and her Basilius kin take a detour trip to the Northernmost Crest to search for signs of the Portal to Orabelle. The hope her blood can unleash the Celestials, and maybe reunite her parents, fuels her need to find a shred of evidence the portal can be reforged. Shaye is well aware that if they are going to defeat Drogon, they'll need more help than she can offer.

Once she's back in Tronovia, it seems the only way to entice the other rulers in Dalerin to journey to their shores for a war council is to deceive them. With a wedding planned, dragon training intensifying, and relationships being tested, Shaye and her friends have no choice but to watch their backs more than before, learning those once considered allies might be enemies in disguise.

Storytelling is in Morgan Gauthier’s blood; She can’t seem to turn her brain off at night and some of her best ideas have come to her in the shower.

Born to two book-loving parents, Morgan was raised on a healthy diet of The Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, Nancy Drew, and any fantasy book she could get her hands on. She started writing her own stories at eleven years old and hasn’t looked back.

Wolves of Adalore was her first self-published YA Fantasy title and since then, she has published a Contemporary Romance (Aloha, Seattle) with the second YA Fantasy installment in the Mark of the Hunter Trilogy (The Red Maiden) coming in April of 2022.

Morgan Gauthier lives in East Tennessee with her husband and best friend, Brad, with their three children, Remi, Archer, and Roux (who are 4 years old and younger!). If five people wreaking havoc in the same house wasn’t enough, Morgan also has three dogs, Potter, Skye, and Bubba, and one grumpy bird named Titus.

If Morgan isn’t writing or reading, she can be found binge watching Netflix shows, attempting to cook like Gordon Ramsay (not even close to his level), and practicing archery.

✨A Tale of Trial and Torment✨

Morgan’s series Shadow and Starlight was one of my first reads as I began my booksta journey. I then immediately signed up for an arc of book two. Getting to continue this series and arc read book 3 is so very special to me!

We begin shortly after where we left off from book 2. Since we are in book 3 of an epic series, this will mostly be vibes to keep away spoilers!

I devoured this book. I feel like this series has continued to unfold in a way that just gets better and better. We get deeper character growth and development, world building, magic, lore, and dragons. We follow multi-POVs and romances, FINALLY getting to see some of these characters mature in a way that is just so exciting and moving. This book was definitely the preparation, tension, and suspense of a war on the horizon. The pawns are in place. The stakes are higher than ever. Our crew is separated, but they are forever devoted.

I didn’t think I could love Atlas and Shaye more than I already do, but Morgan made me fall even deeper in love with them. Getting to be in our supporting cast’s head was also perfect. I loveeeeee seeing these characters develop. She writes male characters so well! I hope for redemption for one and have immense curiosity for more of Thrane. I’m so stoked for the finale in book 4!

Tropes you may find in ATOTAT are multi-POV and romance, low spice more on the cracked door side, slow burn, found family, banter, unique magics, dragons and riders, wound tending/comfort, mental heath rep, protective MMCs, women stepping into their fury, political intrigue, and an ending that is not quite a cliffhanger but definitely sets up the suspense! Books 1&2 are out now!

”Thank you for healing the parts of me I didn’t realise were broken.”

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
🌶️🌶️.5

What you’ll find in this book:
- Slow Burn
- Forced Proximity
- Dragons
- Found Family
- Shadow Daddy
- Multi-POV
- High Stakes
- Witty Banter
- Secrets & Betrayal
- Action & Adventure

If you’re looking for a series packed full of action, adventure, elemental magic, dragons, shadow daddy, slow burn romance and a whole heap of forced proximity then I cannot recommend this series enough. Morgan has absolutely blown me away with a story that continues to build on the magical world that has been created, providing a story that is so very gripping with consistent story evolution and development that will keep you on the edge of your seat. I love a fantasy book that straddles the line between the romance element of the story, and the action adventure side of the story, this is a balancing act that never fails to keep me well within its grasp making the story moreish in the best way. Oh and did I mention that there are baby dragons? Yep, so if all of what I have already said isn’t enough to convince you to pick this series up then let the baby dragons do it for me.

For me my favourite part of this series are the characters and the core found family group that forms over the course of these books. Reading as these characters continue to form relationships and evolve and shift as we get to know them, their fears and their desires. I adore the Harland brothers so dang much! Each so loveable but so different, and reading as Morgan takes the time to fully explore each of these characters, and all of the characters in general whether they be good or bad, makes for a story with a deep sense of connectedness to the characters. We rejoin Shaye in this book as she continues to discover more about her past, her heritage and where she came from. Under the weight of a number of revelations Shaye is trying to come to terms with who she and who she wants to be. This internal struggle holds massive weight over the story and is a theme that flows throughout, this identity crisis makes Shaye that much more relatable as a character and feels like such an important point for Morgan to have explored and keep at the forefront of the story. Atlas has evolved so much over the course of the series so far, it makes me so incredibly happy to see how he is with Shaye, the level of devotion he has for her. There are still parts of himself that he keeps at a distance but reading as he slowly shares more of himself,f with Shaye made my heart melt. Within this book we seriously take a deeper dive into the lives of the other characters within the found family group. The dynamic between Finn and Erie, how Nyx begins to realise what once made him happy doesn’t anymore, and Ronan and his journey to find a wife under the weight of everyone’s expectations. I enjoyed more than I can articulate getting to know these characters more, with new POV’s and higher stakes at play I could not get enough of this book.

Morgan consistently surprises me with this story in the best way, providing soft, sweet moments followed by those that are dark and impactful. Pushing both the story and the characters to the limit, and when I say to the limit, I truly mean that. Morgan has set us up in this fantastical world but is not afraid to show us the harsher side of it, reminding us that the stakes can result in death, all that it takes is for the scales to tip in the wrong direction. We get soooooooo much more dragon content in this book and I LOVED it, and not only are they modes of transportation but they themselves become key parts of the story with their distinctive personalities and link to the characters and the magical system. Discovering more about this world, its regions and how this relates to our characters makes for world-building that feels relevant and memorable. I would say the pace was medium to fast but this felt fitting for the nature of the story and the way that the characters are racing against time. I cannot wait for the next book in the series already. I have been left wanting and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Thank you so much to Morgan for sending me an e-ARC to read and review early.

Whew. Where do I even begin with this review? Infinity stars 😍😍😍

I’ve been obsessed with this series since book one, and eagerly counted down the days for book three… and it didn’t just meet my expectations, it completely shattered them.

A Tale of Trial and Torment is an absolute rollercoaster. I tore through this book at a speed that would make Max Verstappen look like he’s crawling 😂🤭 And honestly… wow. Just wow.

Morgan Gauthier is a master storyteller. From the very first book, this series has delivered it all: immersive world-building, side characters who completely stole my heart, a love story that had me grinning like a fool, magic that lit up my inner child, plot twists and tension that refuse to let me breathe. And somehow, book three raises the stakes on everything.

The romance is deeper, richer, and so much more emotionally gripping. The found family dynamic is heartwarming and tear-jerking in the best way. The tension is absolutely unreal. This book didn’t just have tension… it defined it. It had me smiling, everyone thriving, everything finally falling into place… and then it went from simmering tension to WHAT is happening right now?! in the blink of an eye 😳

And that cliffhanger… I’m sorry, what do you mean that’s it until book four? I need answers. I need closure. I need the next book immediately.

I’m genuinely a little heartbroken at how fast I devoured this, because I was not ready to say goodbye to these characters.

An exceptional romantasy that delivers soaring highs, heart-melting moments, and twists that will leave your mind spinning. I loved every single second of it.

A huge thank you to the author for the opportunity to be an ARC reader for this phenomenal series.

4.5/5 stars rounded up

If you’ve made it to the third book of a series, I assume that you either really love it or you are dedicated to a hate read (which I admire your dedication but why would you do that to yourself?)

In any case, I thoroughly enjoyed reading A Tale of Trial and Torment. As it is the third book in the series, I loved jumping right into some action that takes place soon after the ending of the second book.

Pacing wise I think there is a pretty good mix of action and slower moments that are more for character development as well as giving us readers (and characters) a break from the action. There are some moments that felt a little too rushed for me or seemed too convenient but I also tend to lean more towards a slower paced story depending on my mood.

I won’t spoil any specific details but I will say that this book does a lot of setting the stage for the epic finale in the fourth and final book in the series. More lore and history has been introduced, new areas and characters unlocked, and it wouldn’t be a Tale of Trial and Torment without some emotional damage and stress sprinkled (sometimes ladled) throughout the book.

In terms of content, there are are some content warnings for this book. There’s nothing too detailed in this book in my opinion but there may be some scenes that can be triggering to some so caution is advised. There’s a list in the beginning of the book as well.

I really enjoyed this book and I look forward to the fourth and final book of the series.

Also special thanks to the author for allowing me to be on the ARC team and receiving an electronic copy of this book.

Beta review thoughts: absolute perfection, Morgan is a amazing and this book is a masterpiece!

This book didn’t end: it landed. Reading the final line written i was stunned, hollow, and full all at once. All I could say was wow. I could feel the slowly building of oh no something bad is going to happen. Waiting on the edge of my seat as I’m reading knowing it was going to hurt but still devouring the story. I love all the side stories that are unraveling along side the main one. When Finn was stabbed I swear I felt my heart drop, and the last chapter being his point of view was perfection. He doesn’t hesitate to use his powers in his dream because Eris tells him to fight. And him finally telling she how he feels!! Ahh I literally screamed I was so happy. And I laughed because poor Nyx was totally traumatized.
Eris being taken and the chapter of her with her sister, that adds such a layer to our understanding of the inner workings of her family. And a great display of contrast of what a real mother is. That their mother would harm her own daughter. Reading that chapter and the revelation that her mother is forcing one daughter to heal the other that she had beaten for appearance purposes. Contrasting to a few chapters before where we see a true mother, Soraya, who is about to wage war for Eris claiming her as her daughter. I was absolutely in tears reading that. I can’t wait to see Soraya face off against Astrea.
Nyx’s arc in this book! Ugh I didn’t think I could love him more, but you made me love him more. Him getting a dragon was so lovely. I’m so pleased with his development, I am absolutely here for him going after Hagar. Like boy you go get her, she perfect for you. Also lokey I want to see Nyx fight her betrothed because I don’t like that guy, especially after he grabbed her wrist trying to yank her back. I was like oh boy I’m gonna throw hands with you if Nyx doesn’t.
Ronan falling for Viella, that was so cute. Like literally I was over here theorizing absolutely unhinged wife possibilities and you give us the most beautiful little meet cute and Atlas playing matchmaker was so funny!! It was so cute, I hope we get to know her more in future books!
Vidarr coming to Tronovia and finding atlas! It was so perfect, also him playing with him was absolutely adorable. When he shared the memory of Naya with atlas. Definitely got teary-eyed.
I would like to humbly request that Thrane have his own pov chapters next book. I can say I am unabashedly in love with him.

I was absolutely blown away by this third installment in the Shadow and Starlight series! I love a series that not only provides heart pounding action but multiples romances and all the emotional impact! Every single one of these characters (heroes and villains alike) have so much depth and I cannot get enough of every single one of them! Those Harland boys have my entire freaking heart!! I love them all so much! If you love found family, this is one you must meet. Their banter, the laughs, the protectiveness, this is a group you just wish you could be a part of!

Every single POV adds so much to the story and the plot development and setup for what will come in the final book has me excited and terrified all at the same time. I cannot lose any of my favorite characters in the war that is coming! There were moments in this book that broke me and were honestly hard to read and moments that had me laughing so hard I cried. This book was about loss, redemption, growth, and hope! And did I mention the dragons!!! There are so many moving parts and they all come together effortlessly! It gets every single star from me!!!!

“You really are a beautiful force to be reckoned with.” He snakes an arm around my waist, yanking me against his chest. He tips my chin up. “And you’re mine.”

“Scars are stories [redacted]. Proof that what tried to break you failed.”

“And how am I looking at you?”
“The same way I breathe you in and still can’t get enough.”

“When in doubt, bring a dragon,” she winks.

“When I opened my eyes and saw your face, I just knew. You’re my person. There is no one else for me. So, when I say I want you, I mean all of you. Not for tonight. Not for a short, predetermined time. I want you now and until the day I breathe my last.”

Just when I didn’t think I could love these characters more…I somehow do! I think this book is my favorite out of the series so far!

There were parts of the story that had me laughing out loud, gasping in disbelief, and just sad. This book takes you through the gamut of emotions for sure! Because of that, I would suggest checking for TWs for your own mental health for a particular scene.

So much happens in this book and I love that we get multiple POVs! It was fun being inside the head of each of the brothers! And I thought I already loved Atlas, Nyx, and Finn, but this book made me love them even more! They are funny, protective, and so loyal to each other and those they love! I also loved the growth they went through in this book. Ronan and Thrane also grew in this book as well and made me love them even more!

I love that we get to see more of the world in this book and meet some fun new characters! Also, can I give a shout out the BA moms in this book?! It was so nice seeing them be able to their powerful selves and do what it takes to protect those they love! I’m just sad I have to wait for the next book!

This series just keeps getting better with every book. I really liked the pacing in this book because there was always something happening without it feeling rushed or overwhelming. Shayes character development has been one of my favorite parts of this series, especially seeing how much she’s grown while still holding onto the friendships that matter to her.

I also really liked how everything with Bastian was handled. Even after his betrayal in the first book, their relationship still feels layered and realistic because underneath everything they are still childhood best friends who deeply care about each other. It wasn’t written as something easily forgiven, but it also didn’t erase the history and bond they shared, which made the emotional moments hit even harder.

The villain in this series also felt different from a lot of fantasy villains we usually read, which made the story stand out even more for me.

The ending definitely left me excited for the next book because I need to know what happens next!!

This picks up a few weeks after book 2 ended and was filled with so much!

So many more POVs and now we got to see inside all the Harland brother's heads! A lot more romances and connections being forged in this book, though of course, the ending does not go how we want it to.

Shaye and Atlas entirely gave into their feelings in the last book and go through a bit more growth in this one. There are some lightly spiced scenes, but otherwise it's mostly fade to black.

A few little skirmishes between the good and bad characters kept me on the edge of my seat. There is also some world expansion (which has happened in each book and I love it). It adds just enough to make the world bigger, but not so much that you feel overwhelmed.

And now to wait for the finale to be written.

Read if you love:
-Dragons
-Shadow daddies
-Found family
-Multi POV
-World expansion

Thank you to the author for the eARC. My thoughts are entirely my own.

A Tale of Trial & Torment is a fantastic continuation of this series that Morgan is gracing us with. I was already excited for it when I picked it up, but I knew it was going to be a banger right from the get go with the playlist. It has more of my kind of music than any book playlist I’ve seen yet, especially with her including my favorite band, Dayseeker. Bless.

This book was a lot of fun for me because Morgan is continuing to build this really neat world and we’re learning more about the dragons that we’re introduced in the second book. I think my most favorite part was getting even more insight into all of the characters! We got into their heads, and they’re really starting to grow. I’m here for seeing all of our friends get what they want! The ending…woof. I’m so ready for the next book!

ARC review:
Morgan, I cannot begin to describe how much I love this series! You have once again knocked it out of the park.
I loved the multi POVs and being able to get the full story from all perspectives. This book had me laughing, in tears, even angry, but also on the edge of my seat the entire time. I can’t get enough of Shaye, Atlas, Finn, Eris, Nyx, and Thrane.
Shaye and Atlas are one of my all time favorite fictional couples.
I don’t usually read fantasy because it’s hard for me to envision the world but the way Morgan has built Dalerian is absolutely incredible. It has painted such a vivid picture, it’s like a movie in my head. This is one of my favorite series and I will be sad to see it come to an end.

I have been eagerly waiting for this book and it was everything I was hoping for and more. It’s a rollercoaster of emotions. There’s magic, battles, quests, even more dragons and romance. It thankfully picks up not long after the ending of book 2 so we are immediately back in the thick of it. Shay aka Aurelia continues to get stronger each and every single book. I think after what happened in this book she is going to be even more of a powerhouse. I love her. I also adore her with Atlas. Their love is so pure and I loved their quiet moments together. Also loved the growth for Nyx, Ronan, Finn and Eris in this book. They are great characters. Thrane is my new favorite though. 10/10 for him, no notes. The ending came far too soon. I am so ready and can’t wait for the next book, for everyone to fight together to help save the world!!!

Where do I even begin. This book was action from page one and the ending was a crazy as expected especially after Ballad but just from knowing how the last book in the Mark of a hunter series went. I know book 4 is going to be heartwrenching and chaotic and epic af.

A Tale of Trial and Torment is book 3 and picks up right where Ballad ended. There is a lot of character growth in this one. New powers, new dragons, demons, new love, confessions of love and torment. There's a lot going on but I loved every second of the chaos. Please read the triggers before picking up this book. There are some hard things in here but there is a lot of strength. My heart weeps for Shaye and what she has gone through but I know she's incredibly strong and will get her vengeance.

Oh my goodness… this part was absolutely incredible!

I was lucky enough to be one of the ARC readers — THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THAT OPPORTUNITY! There were so many tears of happiness and tenderness in the beginning. I missed these characters so much — more than words can say.

It felt so comforting, like coming home.

And then by the end, I had chewed all my nails off from nerves! Whew…

I’m terrible at writing reviews, unfortunately, but I am OBSESSED. I’ve been obsessed since the very first book! This series helped carry me through grief. It quite literally kept me from falling into depression. Thank you, thank you, Morgan, for this story! I cannot wait for the next installment.

This book was everything I wanted and more. Seriously I'm not sure how I will be able to wait for the conclusion.

We got some amazing POV, Thrane at his prime (seriously i want more of Thrane, I want a whole book with Thrane and The Harland, excellent band name by the way), dragons, friendship, love, battle, badass people. It was soo so good.

Morgan did it again and put out an incredible book. I cannot wait to be back into this world, I love it there. I found it really easy to dive back even if it had been a long time since book 2, it feels like coming home.

If there were more than 5 stars, I would give it. Absolutely incredible!!!! That’s all I can say. I loved this book and just when you think it couldn’t get better, it does. This is my favorite book in this series. There were so many emotions that I went through during this book and I love where it is leading. While the truth is I am on the edge of my seat waiting for next book, I believe there is hope and redemption on the horizon!!!!!

I read the e- arc and am leaving my honest opinion.

I usually stay up late reading, but this one had me waking up early just to get more time with it. I couldn’t wait to dive back in and learn more about the dragons and this world. It still feels like there’s so much left to uncover.

The dragons, the found family, and the characters were my favorite parts. Every dragon felt unique, and I loved all the riding scenes and discovering new species. I also ended up really caring about every character. Their relationships felt genuine, and I liked how they supported each other while still pushing each other to grow.

The action kept me hooked too. The fight scenes were exciting, and seeing everyone finally use their full powers and work together was so satisfying. I also liked the multiple POVs. They helped me connect with each character without feeling like too much.

This series just keeps getting better for me. Each book adds something new while still giving me all the fantasy and romance elements I enjoy. Even in book three, the world is still expanding with new places and creatures.

Aurelia’s journey really stood out. I loved watching her grow into her strength while also recognizing her flaws. And Thrane was such a highlight. I looked forward to every scene with him, especially his dynamic with Nyx.

Overall, it was a really fun and immersive read with great characters, strong action, and a world that keeps pulling me in.

ARC Review

This book takes off right where A Ballad of Beasts and Brothers ended. From start to finish this epic tale was so difficult to put down. The twists and turns in the story were so enjoyable and unpredictable! I am so obsessed with this series!!

The romance is so much more than what it seems and so many facets are explored through all the different characters. The character growth and development is still going strong even with new characters coming in. This beautiful found family is truly to die for. I cannot get over Morgan's writing style for this series. She just really knows how to tell a story and keep readers invested in what comes next.

I am so sad that I completely devoured this book because I just am so invested in seeing where this story goes and have zero patience to get the next one in my hands. This book (and series) deserves every single star in the galaxy!

Morgan Gauthier really took everything we adored from the first two books and said, “oh yeah?! Here’s that x10000!”

I laugh, I cried, I swooned over every. single. character. Except for the one person iykyk but I did even feel empathy towards them, that’s how great this writing is 😭

I can’t wait to get my hands on a physical copy and reread!!! I must have been such a great person in my past life to be blessed with beta reading A Tale of Trial and Torment 🫶🏼

This was PERFECTION. Love love love.

Morgan’s writing had me in agony. The descriptions, the scenes, THE TANGIBLE EMOTION.

I love Shaye and Atlas even more somehow? The brothers, Eris, everyone was so well developed in this story. Each book in this series gets better and better.

I’m broken, but it’s okay. Morgan can break me with a book any day if she keeps writing this way and providing beautiful stories. 😭
