None of the hackers in the computer chatroom uses their real name, and all of them have secrets to keep from the others. Still, one by one they learn someone hides a secret so dark the truth could unite the survivors or risk making their lives a living hell. If you are a sensitive reader, then this book set in 2002 is not for you.
Really enjoyed this one. The premise is smart and intriguing, the horror elements are very well handled, and the mystery kept me eagerly turning the pages. Nicely done indeed.
Since I’m not a sensitive reader, I plunged into this with high expectations of a plot others might find shocking. I was not disappointed. It was brilliant. The chat room banter was far more important than I had at first realised, and as the story unfolded, I found myself going back over it to remind myself of what had been said.
Using a computer chat room was a clever and unique technique to advance plot and introduce players. Transcripts were sandwiched between chapters, in which we learned more about the real-world identities of the group and discovered just who was using what handle and what they were up to in their every day lives. As the story progressed, a sinister and rather creepy aura developed around the group’s interactions, and suspicions grew that things were not as they had at first appeared.
