In a new hole book, Nisha Small returns, and this time her curiosity is stirred not only by a mystery but by history itself. In Nisha Small - The Ring of Rubies by C. G. Salamander, Nisha and her constant companion Jamie Karthik find themselves drawn into the tragic legend of Kannagi just as real danger unfolds in their present.
On the brink of an exam and in the midst of learning about Kannagi’s story, the two armchair detectives are shaken by news of a fire engulfing the old theatre in Madurai. What begins as alarm soon turns into investigation, as clues surface and questions multiply. The race is not merely to solve a puzzle but to understand whether the chain of events is coincidence or design. The narrative asks quietly but persistently, will Nisha and Jamie follow the trail of truth before Madurai is consumed by fear and destruction?
The story becomes a mini lesson in history without ever feeling like one. Salamander takes a thoughtful risk in condensing Kannagi’s powerful legend for young readers, allowing them to glimpse the emotional weight of justice, sacrifice, and consequence.
Jamie remains Nisha’s steady anchor, offering companionship, courage, and balance to her restless mind. Their partnership feels seasoned, shaped by previous adventures and strengthened by trust. A subtle nod to the familiar Madurai Ace Detectives (MAD) reminds readers that Nisha’s world extends beyond one case, grounded in shared experience and mentorship.
The writing blends suspense with warmth, courage with humour. Even vocabulary becomes part of the journey, introducing children to words like “arsonist” while deepening their understanding of responsibility and risk, especially for those who protect others at the cost of their own families.
At times, the story challenges the reader with layered ideas, but this complexity is part of its charm. The Ring of Rubies is not only a mystery, it is a bridge between legend and lived reality, between friendship and duty. A thoughtful return for Nisha Small, and a story that leaves young minds both curious and reflective.

”I have read the story. But sometimes it's good to look at it in a different way.”

- C G. Salamander, Nisha Small:The Ring of Rubies

Nisha Small and Jamie Karthik were equal parts excited and nervous as they embarked on a journey to learn Kannagi's tragic story. Just before the exam, the armchair detectives were alarmed by the news of a fire engulfing in the old theatre. Will the duo follow the trail of clues before Madurai is doomed?

”They would have investigated and Kannagi's husband would have been freed before the trial started.”

Nisha Small:The Ring of Rubies is a mini historical fiction lesson that piques the curious minds. C G. Salamander, has taken a calculated risk in condensing Kannagi's famous lore for children. I was impressed with naming of characters. For instance, AC Arasan, was probably named after the word - ’Arson’. It also makes a statement about how policemen risk their lives at the cost of their loved ones.

”We would love to learn from the best that is why we neglect our families to be here in the darkness with you.”

The writing style blends ancient history with courage, friendship and humour. Children are acquainted with the word - ’Arsonist’ which definitely would expand their library of words.

There were times in the story that I got confused, but as I was familiar with Rajiv Eipe's illustrations in the book - ’Prabir's New Flute’, he also excels in hand drawn monochrome sketches. The pace mirrors Eipe's work. The detailing of the Madurai theatre, was not lost on me.

Overall, Nisha Small: The Ring of Rubies succeeds in presenting a familiar legend through a fresh, engaging lens, encouraging young readers to question, investigate, and connect history with imagination.

The wrath of Kannagi!

This story actually had me scratching my head, but Salamander's engrossing storytelling skills clubbed with Eipe's striking clarity of handlebar/virumandi/walrus moustaches and the historical tale of Kannagi, kept me going. As the city burned under Kannagi's wrath in the tale, modern-day Madurai is once again on the verge of being burned down. Will our little detectives Nisha Small and Jamie Karthik be able to save their city from the vengeful flames of an arsonist? Or will history repeat itself because it's a given that those who do not remember mistakes of the past are condemned to repeat them?

PS: I honestly loved the squabble between a citizen's arrest and a father's love arrest!

This one leans into mystery, curiosity, and moral questioning, all while keeping young readers firmly hooked. Set in Madurai, the story uses suspense and investigation as tools to explore responsibility, justice, and the consequences of human action. The pacing is neat and controlled—perfect for children who enjoy plot-driven stories without getting overwhelmed. Rajiv Eipe’s illustrations deserve special mention here: expressive, dynamic, and emotionally attuned to the story’s tension. They don’t just decorate the pages; they participate in the storytelling. The language remains moderate and age-appropriate, making complex ideas digestible without diluting their impact.
