A Crown So Cruel

Rate this book
Destiny was written in the stars…

In a world where the fae zodiac courts were ruled by celestial law and dragon fire, kindness was a myth and survival a privilege Sorsha had never been granted. Banished and branded a threat, she was dragged back to the courts by Venix. The fae who had once shared her secrets, her trust, and something akin to first love… until he shattered it with a single unforgivable betrayal.

The past they had shared had no place in the present. Venix now commanded the Fire Court, where dragons plagued the skies and war threatened the land. His loyalty to his court was as ruthless as the flames that had forged him. Sorsha had believed he was once a friend to her, and now he believed she was nothing more than a pawn in his game.

But even pawns could bring a king to his knees.

Both had bled for the choices they’d made, and both would bleed for the ones still to come. When the zodiac courts began to fracture, their fates were tied in ways neither of them had asked for. They were forced into a dangerous alliance built on half-truths and betrayals waiting to happen. Venix would have to choose whether he was her captor, her protector, or the blade at her back. Sorsha would have to decide what she would become… a victim of fate or something far darker than the stars had ever intended.

…may the stars forever be kind.

**ARC Review** Thank you, Megan Montero and the Author Agency for entrusting me with your amazing work.

A Crown So Cruel is a richly imagined high‑fantasy adventure that leans heavily into expansive world‑building, dragon lore, and action‑driven conflict.

Megan Montero clearly put a great deal of care into crafting a detailed setting, and readers who love immersive landscapes, political tension, and combat‑forward storytelling will likely find a lot to appreciate here.

For me personally, this one was a bit harder to stay engaged with. It very well could have been my mood and mindset at the time I started the book. While the world itself is vivid, I found myself wanting a deeper emotional connection to the characters and more internal development to anchor me in their journeys. That’s very much a matter of personal reading preference — I tend to gravitate toward character‑driven fantasy with strong emotional arcs, so this may simply not have aligned with the mood I was in when I picked it up.

Because of that, I’m open to revisiting it in the future when I’m craving something more epic and plot‑focused. I can absolutely see this resonating with readers who prioritize intricate world‑building, dragons, and high‑stakes action above all else.

VERY WELL DONE.

This was a new to me author and I was wanting it to be good but wow! It was really great! I really want to read more by this author.

What went right:

Sorsha is everything I love about an FMC. She was flawed but loyal, strong but emotionally complex, and she has a dragon! I mean hello! Who doesn’t want a dragon?? I really loved their relationship and enjoyed seeing their witty conversations and how they fought for each other. As the relationship with the MMC starts developing her dragon, Beren, is so hilariously ready to burn him.

Sorsha was exiled as a child for a mistake. This caused her to be banished and move from a comfy titled life to that of a banished one in the wilds. There she learned to fight and live on her own the hardest way possible.

The MMC is Venix and he was her past crush and now the high lord from the land that banished her. He needs her for something but as they work together his feelings reveal themselves once more. I think their relationship was well developed and I like the touch her and ☠️ vibes from him.

What I wanted more of:

The magic system was fun but i feel like it wasn’t fully explored. I would have liked more in depth information on it and what each zodiac typically inherits, or is it random?

The past was not explored enough. I liked our MCs current relationship and how it was hard won but we have some unanswered questions… why did he tell his father on her if he hated him? Why did he wait to come look for her? What made the sister finally call off the betrothal? What does it mean to be stars crossed fated mates(I swear it was only mentioned once and that was when it happened)?

The ending felt very abrupt! I’m also confused on what happened with the council. I wish there would have been more after they were bathed in light with random tattoos placed on them.

For these reasons I lowered my rating.

I very much liked this book. I’m definitely going to continue the series and hope that we cover more info in the next book. Honestly, this wasn’t a short book and the story was interesting and kept my attention so maybe I just wanted a bigger book haha.

Thank you to The Author Agency and the author for an ARC of this book. I genuinely devoured this book. This was my first book by the author and honestly, I can’t wait to read more of her books especially the books in this series!! This is the first book in the series. It seems like it’s an interconnected standalone series, but for the best experience read them all in order. I absolutely loved Sorsha and vixen as our main characters. It was kind of sad to get to the end of this book and realize that their main story was over and that will potentially see them in other books. I could’ve had more of them. It was great especially because at the start vixen was getting on my nerves a little bit, but he had some growth and he became likable. I always loved my girl Sorsha from the jump. Honestly, that big reveal that happened at the end…I knew something was going on. I just didn’t know that was it and I loved that little twist. I think I know where that’s gonna go in the next book. All of that will make sense once you read the book but honestly, I couldn’t put this book down. I was speed reading through it because I just wanted to know what was going to happen next!! This has dragons, magic and fae and you’ll just get enamored with the world! I can’t wait to see what’s going to happen next in this world.

Is fire daddy a thing? Because Venix is definitely a fire daddy. Well, this was my first 5 star read of the year, and oh my god was it good!!! Thank you to Megan Montero and The Author Agency for gifting me this ARC. A Crown So Cruel is a triple POV fantasy and is the first book in the War of the Zodiacs series. It follows Sorsha, Venix, and Astos as they try to survive against the odds.

I was swept up in the world. The world building was on point. The dragon scenes made me feel like I was right there with the characters. I loved Sorsha's strength, especially after all she had been through, and watching her become the fierce warrior she is was great. I love being tortured by a slow burn, so I wish this one lasted a little longer, but it was so satisfying in the end. While there wasn't lots of spice, what was there was perfect.

I was submerged deep in this world, and I can't wait to find out what happens next!

-ARC REVIEW-

This was a fantastic start to a new series! This is the first book I read by this author and I’m definitely excited to read more. The story follows Sorsha and Venix, and I adored their romance!! Not to mention dragons, fae AND astrology?! I was so hooked. I also really love that this seems to be more of an interconnected standalone than a series just following our FMC and MMC in this book. I can’t wait to read the rest!!

Thank you to The Author Agency for this review copy and the opportunity to review this book!

Loooooove! Oh my goodness I am so into this world it’s not even funny. Sucked right in. I cannot wait for the rest of this series. War of the Zodiacs let’s goooo!

But in all seriousness, this book had me in its grip from start to finish. Hello fire baddies. Beren is awesome with his sass. Best dragon sidekick.

Sorsha and Venix made me want to smack some sense into them sometimes, but it was a true enemies to lovers slow burn. Which is impressive with all that fire.

Love this branch of Romantasy from Megan and cannot wait for more to come.

A new fae series will always get my attention, and so when A Crown so Cruel became available for an ARC read- I jumped.

A very rich and exciting world is opened up to us in this first of the series. Fae, strong female leads and -DRAGONS- filled the fantasy hole my heart had for some time. The romance is on point, and Venix and Sorsha's charged chemistry will keep you up late at night.

I look forward to the next the series and thank the author for a chance to read!

This book is so, so good, the kind of fantasy that completely consumes you and leaves you struggling to put your feelings into words. If you love fae, dragons, elemental magic, and intense emotion, do yourself a favor and read this. You won’t be sorry.

Set in the expansive and dangerous world of Firah’s Court of Fire, ruled by the Houses of Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius, this story is rich in lore, magic, and dragon fire. From the very first pages, the world-building pulls you in and never lets go.

Sorsha was banished as a child from the Court of Fire for her role in the Great Burning and has survived ever since in the Expanse, living in caves with her dragon, Berenice (Beren). Her bond with Beren is beautiful, fierce, and unbreakable. Apart from her dragon, her only true connection is her friend Astos, until everything changes.

When the brutal Celestromancers arrive, dragging fae onto barges and throwing them into dark, merciless pits, Sorsha risks everything to help Astos. The battle that follows is explosive, fire, magic, dragons, and chaos, until the Firahs arrive, including Venix, a face from her past. When the dust settles, Astos is captured, Sorsha is exposed as bonded to a fire dragon (something thought impossible), and her fate is forever altered.

Venix takes Sorsha back with him, drawn to her for reasons he doesn’t yet fully understand, but he knows her. Their connection is charged with tension, angst, and sparks that feel ready to ignite the world. The banter and camaraderie between Venix and his friends Laz, Pollux, and Ramiel is laugh-out-loud fun and strongly reminiscent of the Bat Boys from ACOTAR.

The women in this story are everything. Sorsha and Caldara (Venix’s sister) are fierce, sassy, knife-wielding badasses who prefer boots and leathers over gowns and crowns. Strong, unapologetic, and powerful.

And the dragons, oh, the dragons. Each one has a personality that feels vivid and alive. Ara, the lava dragon created by Venix, Bow, the lava dog created by Ramiel, playful Ceph who loves fetch with boulders, and even Lynx, the pink dragon completely smitten with Beren, all of them add heart, humor, and magic to the story.

There is always something happening: battles, raids, political tension, emotional confrontations, and moments of humor that perfectly balance the darkness. The angst between Sorsha and Venix is intense, the stakes are high, and the pacing will keep you reading well into the early hours.

✨ This is a 5+ star read for me. Epic, emotional, action-packed fantasy with unforgettable dragons, powerful women, and a story that completely owns your heart.

AMAZING… AMAZING… AMAZING!! I literally just finished A Crown So Cruel and omg I could put this book down for even one second. I was constantly on the edge of my seat waiting to see what was going to happen next. And if that’s not enough then the slow burn, enemies to lovers romance full of banter, yearning, and chemistry sparked right off the page. Oh and let’s not forget the DRAGONS! This book is an absolute must read for any Romantasy fans and one I highly recommend adding to your TBR now!

This one was stunning from beginning to end, if you love a book that is character driven then I highly recommend immediately adding this one to your TBR, because you will not want to miss out on Sorsha and Venix journey. Sorsha is riled by the house of Leo but has been banished from her home for a mistake she made as a child… but Sorsha is nothing is not resourceful and willing to adapt and overcome. When an attack at her new home goes wrong though she’s thrown back into a world she wished never to be apart of again. And while the memories of where she use to call home grip tightly to Sorsha she’s not willing to forgive and forget… but she’s not willing to let her people down either. Honestly I just loved Sorsha she is smart, fierce, loyal, and when she loves she loves hard and forever. Not to mention she’s hilarious, and the banter between her and Venix… and everyone else is top notch. As for Venix, it took me a minute to really fall for our MMC, I liked him but his attitude was a bit to I’m better than you for me. But once we started to get to know him and see who he was under the High Lord mask I really liked his character. It was clear all he wanted was to protect his land, his people, and those that he loved to the best of his ability without making the same mistakes as the ones who had ruled before him. And together… together Venix and Sorsha’s romance leapt right off the page! Yes it was an absolute slow-burn full of longing, yearning, and learning to trust the feelings in your heart, but oh boy was it worth it. And if all of that doesn’t sell you, I mean a beautifully written book full of amazing characters, fantastic romance, and plenty of on the edge of your seat moments that’ll leave you wanting book two immediately then let me also mention that you will absolutely love every single dragon in this book! Because as much as I love Sorsha and Venix the dragons were probably my absolute favorite! A Crown So Cruel is definitely a must read in my opinion and one I’d definitely recommend being added to any and every TBR!

5/5 ⭐️

A Crown So Cruel is a fiery, immersive fantasy romance that completely swept me away. This story delivers everything I love: enemies-to-lovers tension, fated mates, found family, dark magic, and dragons with dry humor and witty banter. Set in a volcanic court, the setting is vivid and atmospheric. 🐉🔥👑

Exiled as a child for a single mistake, Sorsha (FMC)she’s stripped of her title and comfort and forced to survive on her own. The strength, resilience, and sharp edge she develops makes for a compelling journey and a satisfying heroine to follow. The romance between Sorsha and Venix (MMC) is deliciously complicated. As they’re forced to work together, old feelings reignite in the most angsty, slow-burn way. Their history adds so much depth to every interaction. The danger is woven seamlessly into the worldbuilding.

A Crown So Cruel was a remarkable fantasy romance journey, and I couldn’t put it down. I highly recommend this to fans of dragon-filled, emotionally charged, and fate-defying romantasy.

Great world building…. and DRAGONS!

I am a huge fan of Megan and love all of her books but this one is taking it to a new level! I love the lore she has come up with and the world building is amazing. It’s basically all your *favorite* fantasy concepts - fae, elemental courts, dragons- but in a unique way. I really enjoyed how the different fae of a specific court have different types of power- like the fire fae don’t just throw fire, it’s more interesting and detailed with each fae able to do different aspects of fire magic (ex. lava vs smoke vs fire). Even the dragons of each court are unique - they don’t all spew fire! The water dragons have different spewing! So cool. I also love how Sorsha has her own special unique power! The enemy to lovers plot is not too enemy driven, which made things flow and come together. I can’t wait for the next book!

I enjoyed this so much. A Crown So Cruel pulled me in with its fae courts, zodiac magic, dragons, and the tension between past lovers turned enemies. The worldbuilding was immersive without feeling overwhelming, and the stakes felt real as the courts began to fracture.

Sorsha is a resilient FMC who refuses to stay broken, and Venix is exactly the kind of ruthless, morally grey MMC I enjoy. Their shared history, betrayal, and forced alliance made their dynamic angsty and compelling, keeping me hooked throughout.

Overall, a solid and engaging read with great tension and atmosphere. Can’t wait for the next one!

Thank you to The Author Agency & Megan Montero for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Sorsha was exiled as a child after one mistake completely changed her life. She went from having everything to being forced to survive on her own in the wilds, learning how to fight and stay strong the hard way. I really loved how resilient she was and how she refused to let her past break her.

Venix is her old crush, but now he’s the High Lord of the land that banished her. He needs her help for his own reasons, and of course that means they’re forced to work together. Their history makes everything so much more intense, and Venix gives major touch her and die vibes as his feelings start creeping back in.

This was my first book by this author, but I already know I’ll be reading more. Sorsha is such a strong FMC, and Venix is the perfect ruthless, morally grey MMC. The angst, betrayal, and forced alliance dynamic had me hooked the whole time.

First off, the WORLD BUILDING!! Megan Montero has a way with words, and throughout the whole book, I felt like I was actually there.

This romantasy needs to be at the top of your TBR because it will not disappoint.

There is so much tension, power, betrayal, action, suspense and a tad bit of spice to capture you right from the start and keep you on the edge of your seat until the very last line. This book made adulting a nightmare because I did not want to put it down.

Omg, this book was so good! The world building was exquisite! The characters were so well written that I could see them in my mind. The description overall was just amazing. This was like a fun romantasy in my head as I read this book. I enjoyed the story. The adventure and action. The main characters were a lot of fun. This book held my interest easily as it flowed really well and I wanted to know what was going to happen at every turn.

Ok this has been my favorite read of the year so far! It’s only been one month but this is the 11th book I’ve read and so far my favorite. There’s dragons - which means dragon riders, dragon politics, dragon battles, dragon humor! There characters are entertaining and so easy to like. Sorsha gives Aelin Galathinius vibes (imagine if she was in Manon’s coven and you get Sorsha!!! Literally a badass!) and Venix is the ULTIMATE touch her and die fae male. I love how Beren and Venix don’t get along because it means Sorsha will always be well taken care of!
Anyway, the story flows great, there’s are twists and turns and family secrets and zodiac politics and Celestials and missing friends and elemental magic and all the perfect blend of things to make a really good story. If you’re looking for a dragon read, here it is!

This is a very fun and fast paced read, filled with so much banter. The kind of banter thag had you laughing our loud.

The world the aurhor created sucks you in with each character having their own personality.

I loved the bond our fmc shares with her dragon they truly felt like best friends.

There are some serious notes to this book, but I think majority is definitely more fun and banter filled.

The mmc has it bad for the fmc but doesnt want to admit it, hello tension.

If you liked on wings of blood but not a slow burn than I think you'll love this.

This book was so good. This was my first book by this author and I am not disappointed. There is so much action and tension. The many twist and turns has you flipping through the pages. The world building is phenomenal I loved that I could imagine everything. Baren is a dragon so naturally he’s my favorite. He’s such a fierce protector. I loved Baren and Sorsha’s relationship. I absolutely loved Sorsha. She was such a strong, bada**, and sassy FMC. I loved watching her become a warrior. It took me some time to warm up to Venix our MMC but as his character grew I slowly began to love him. Cal was another favorite her sassy give no f*cks attitude was my favorite. The dragon scene was intense and had me sitting on the edge of my seat. This is a slow burn enemies to lovers where you can just feel the yearning and chemistry. I can’t wait for the next book to see where this world takes us.

A Crown So Cruel is the first book in the War of the Zodiac series.

This book has a bit of ACOTR, with different fae courts according to the zodiac elements, a looming threat and difficult alliances. Plus there are dragons!

I really enjoyed immersing myself in this new world, the court intricacies, the zodiac based powers and houses. The world-building felt organic and not overpowering, with different plot threads being developed at once. The romance is a subplot, and while there's a tiny bit of spice, this is most definitely a plot heavy read. It was a refreshing change from romance centered fantasy, and I really loved it.

Since this is book 1 in a series, there are a lot of open threads, and I can't wait to see how the story will evolve from here.

Absolutely loved it

I absolutely loved this book, and fell in love first with the relationship between Sorsha and her dragon Beren and then just Sorsha herself. She is a strong person who has only been made stronger. Venix took some serious warming up to, because just damn. Cal is a hoot, and I want to be her when I grow up and I really need more about Astos.
This is amazing start to a new world and I am so here for them all

Megan Montero’s A Crown So Cruel made me fully understand why fantasy readers willingly lose sleep, emotional stability, and occasionally their entire personality over fictional kingdoms and morally complicated fae men, because this book consumed every functioning brain cell I had and replaced them with dragon fire, betrayal, yearning, and emotional damage. Huge thank you to Megan Montero for the gifted copy because this was one of those reads where I sat down intending to casually read a few chapters and instead emerged hours later dehydrated, emotionally compromised, and fully prepared to join a dragon army if asked politely enough.

This book feels like standing in the middle of a volcanic storm while everyone around you is carrying secrets sharp enough to cut skin. The atmosphere alone is addictive. From the zodiac courts and elemental magic to the dragon bonds and celestial politics, the world Megan Montero built feels immersive without becoming exhausting. It’s detailed in a way that makes you feel the heat of the Fire Court, hear the wings overhead, and understand why survival in this world requires becoming a little dangerous yourself.

And listen… romantasy is overflowing with dragons right now, but these dragons actually had PERSONALITY. Beren absolutely stole this entire book for me. Protective, sarcastic, emotionally intelligent, mildly homicidal when it comes to anyone threatening Sorsha? Perfection. His bond with Sorsha was one of the strongest emotional anchors in the story because it never felt gimmicky or decorative. They loved each other fiercely, trusted each other completely, and honestly communicated better than most fictional couples. As far as I’m concerned, Beren deserves royalties for emotional labor.

Sorsha instantly became one of my favorite romantasy heroines because she actually feels forged by her experiences instead of simply labeled “strong” because she can wield a weapon. Exiled as a child after one devastating mistake destroyed her life, she survived years in the wild carrying the emotional scars of betrayal, abandonment, and isolation. She’s angry, guarded, resilient, sharp-tongued, compassionate underneath all the armor, and absolutely unwilling to let the people who broke her define who she becomes. I loved that her strength came with consequences. She’s not fearless. She’s simply learned how to survive while afraid.

Then there’s Venix.

This man had me emotionally exhausted.

At the beginning, I genuinely wanted Sorsha to shove him directly into lava and continue on with her day. The tension between them is built on years of pain, betrayal, unresolved feelings, and the kind of history that leaves emotional bruises long after the original wound heals. Venix carries himself like a ruthless High Lord first and a person second, and for a while I truly wasn’t sure if I wanted to kiss him or fight him. Probably both.

But that’s exactly what made the romance work so well.

The relationship between Sorsha and Venix isn’t built on instant forgiveness or surface-level attraction. It’s built slowly through forced proximity, lingering guilt, reluctant trust, shared grief, and the horrifying realization that despite everything, neither of them ever truly stopped loving the other. Every conversation between them felt loaded. Every glance felt dangerous. Every tiny moment of vulnerability hit like a truck because the emotional walls between them were so high to begin with.

And the YEARNING in this book?

Absolutely disrespectful.

This is the kind of slow burn that makes you feral because every almost-touch, every protective instinct, every moment where one of them softens before immediately pretending they didn’t matters so much more than instant gratification ever could. Megan Montero understood the assignment when it came to emotional tension.

“Because it’s always been you, Sorsha. There will never be anyone else.”

Excuse me while I go scream into the void.

What surprised me most was how emotional this story became underneath all the fantasy elements. Beneath the dragons, politics, betrayals, and battles, this is ultimately a story about abandonment, survival, grief, identity, and learning that being loved doesn’t have to come at the cost of yourself. The found family dynamics added so much warmth to the heavier moments, especially through characters like Caldara, who brought humor, chaos, and a refreshing kind of honesty to the story.

And can we talk about the pacing for a second? Because this book had absolutely no respect for my bedtime. Every chapter ended with either emotional devastation, a reveal, tension, action, or some variation of “well now I obviously need to keep reading.” The balance between action scenes and emotional character development worked incredibly well for me. The dragon battles felt cinematic. The political conflict kept the stakes high. The emotional confrontations genuinely hurt. It all blended together into one wildly bingeable reading experience.

I also appreciated that this romantasy leans more plot-heavy than spice-heavy. Yes, there’s romance. Yes, there’s chemistry. Yes, there are moments that absolutely sizzle. But the emotional connection and overall story always remain the focus, which honestly made the romantic payoff feel even stronger. When those walls finally start cracking? It feels earned.

That said, I did have a few moments where I wanted deeper explanations surrounding certain parts of the magic system and zodiac lore, especially because the concept itself is so fascinating. There are also lingering questions surrounding the past between Sorsha and Venix that I desperately need explored further because some emotional wounds still feel only partially uncovered. And the ending? CHAOTIC. In the “how dare this book end when I still need answers immediately” kind of way.

But honestly, none of those things stopped me from loving this.

This feels like the beginning of a romantasy series that’s going to build a wildly devoted fanbase, and deservedly so. It has the emotional intensity romantasy readers crave while still delivering actual worldbuilding, political tension, layered characters, dragon lore, and meaningful stakes.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✨ 4.5 stars

If you love romantasy filled with dragons, elemental magic, enemies-to-lovers tension, forced proximity, second-chance romance, morally gray fae men, emotionally complex heroines, found family, celestial lore, slow-burn yearning, and enough emotional damage to leave you staring at the wall after finishing a chapter, A Crown So Cruel absolutely deserves a spot on your TBR.

Also, I need everyone who reads this to immediately tell me whether you fell for Venix first or if Beren completely stole the spotlight for you too because that dragon had no business being that lovable.

“The stars are never kind… but they are wise.”

A Crown So Cruel by Megan Montero is a fantasy novel set in the magical world of Aradacia, where fae zodiac courts are governed by celestial laws and powerful dragons. The story centers on Sorsha, who was banished from the Court of Fire as a child after a tragic incident involving dragons, and Venix, the High Lord of Firahs, who drags her back as the threat of war looms over the land.

I found the worldbuilding in this book to be truly impressive. The setting of the court around a volcano, with elements of lava and heat, creates a vivid and immersive atmosphere. The dragons were my favorite part – they brought wit, sass, and dry humor to the story, and their unique perspective on the fae was both entertaining and fun to read. The relationship between Sorsha and the dragon Beren stood out to me, especially Beren’s unwavering loyalty and willingness to protect Sorsha at any cost. Their interactions were both heartwarming and hilarious.

I really appreciated Sorsha’s character. She is strong, kind, and confident, always ready to stand up for herself and others. Her quick thinking and compassion for those in need made her a wonderful protagonist. Whether she was risking her own safety to help someone or standing firm in the face of danger, Sorsha’s bravery was inspiring. Venix’s character was also well developed – his loyalty to his people and court, as well as his internal struggles and guilt over dragging Sorsha in the conflict between dragons, made him relatable. The banter and unresolved emotions between Sorsha and Venix added depth to their relationship and kept me invested in their journey. I especially liked how Venix went from asking Sorsha to help unite the dragons against a common enemy to declaring war on other courts to protect her.

The found family aspect added warmth to the story. Caldara, with her blunt and savage personality, was a highlight for me and brought more life to the cast. The author did a great job building suspense around Jaharas, the exiled Celestial. The slow reveal of his powers and his growing army of soulless fae created an intriguing sense of danger. Although the book ends happily for Sorsha and Venix, it leaves many questions unanswered, hinting at further adventures in other courts and a looming war in future installments.

One aspect I struggled with was the chemistry between Sorsha and Venix. At times, their connection didn’t feel as strong as I expected, and certain scenes fell a bit flat. I think this was partly because there wasn’t much insight into their past relationship before Sorsha’s banishment, which could have added more depth to their dynamic. However, this did not take away from my overall enjoyment of the story, and I am looking forward to the next books in the series.

In conclusion, A Crown So Cruel offers an exciting fantasy adventure with memorable worldbuilding, engaging characters, and plenty of intrigue. While there were some minor issues with character chemistry, the story kept me interested and eager for future books. If you enjoy stories filled with magic, sassy dragons, and strong heroines, I would recommend giving this one a try.

When I originally heard about this book, I was extremely excited because it was described as having so many of my favorite plot elements. Dragons? Absolutely some of my favorite magical creatures. Fae warriors with a snarky female main character? Where do I sign up because that is one of my favorite character archetypes.

Yet, when I actually read this book, it did disappoint me quite a bit. The plot was a letdown, in my opinion. Even when I was halfway into the book I felt as if all I knew about the characters was their names, a bit of physical description, and that was it. At halfway through a nearly 450 page book, I had no idea what the characters’ pasts were, what they were motivated by, or why everyone in the court seemed to hate Sorscha so much. It all came together within the last forty pages, but I sincerely wished the character building and plot devices would have been introduced way, way earlier into the book. Furthermore, Astos seemed to be forgotten about entirely as a character and we never received a resolution on what happened to him despite Sorscha constantly claiming to be worried about him.

Another element I really wished we got more of in this book was the worldbuilding. There was not much explanation given as to how the dragons grew to live in the Hive and why they are so revered but feared, which I very much wanted some backstory on Berens and Sorscha’s dynamic in particular. Some of the time skips also seemed oddly placed, such as during the meeting with the Solaris Council ending on a major plot point, starting a new chapter with two of the characters in bed together. I did almost DNF this book quite a few times, but the found family between the characters, the intrigue of hopefully discovering more about the dragons, and wanting to learn more about the characters kept me motivated enough to finish.

I did absolutely enjoy the last 25% of the book more than the beginning 75% and wished the book had more of the elements of that section. My rating would have most likely been higher, as that 25% raised my rating by half a star. I’m overall giving this book 2.5 stars because I was missing quite a few crucial details such as character development/motivations, worldbuilding, and I wanted to know more about what happened to Venix’s father during the Solaris Council. I will not be continuing on in this series, unfortunately.

I received an electronic ARC in exchange for my honest review.

Megan Montero delivers exactly what I want in a fantasy: a truly strong FMC. Sorsha isn’t underestimated or weak waiting to prove herself; she’s already smart, capable, and unapologetically powerful. It was refreshing to read about a bada** heroine who fully owns her strength.

The bond between Sorsha and her dragon, Berenice, is one of my favorite parts of the story. Their love and loyalty to each other are undeniable, and I appreciated how much emphasis the book placed on their connection. They would do anything for one another, and it shows on every page.

I also loved watching Sorsha and Venix slowly give in to the pull between them. Seeing them recognize each other’s strengths and flaws made their connection feel earned. Especially knowing the pain that comes with wanting something they believe they can never have.

Also the side characters all have amazing personalities and contribute so much to the plot! I loved reading all of their interactions and enjoyed the diversity of their personalities.

I did get lost every now and then with the world building, but that happens a lot in the first installment of a series. I got the hang of it halfway through and still enjoyed the story leading up to that point. The ending felt a bit abrupt. I enjoyed it, but I honestly had to double-check that I’d reached the end of the book. That said, it left me eager for the next installment because there’s so much more to uncover, and I can’t wait to see where the story goes next.

A Crown So Cruel is the first book in the War of the Zodiacs, and you will be hooked.
I loved the relationship between Sorsha and the dragon Beren with whom she has bonded

Sorsha was exiled from her kingdom to live in a cave in the Expanse in the bitter cold with nothing and in secret with Beren,

Sorsha was rescued by the High Lord Venix and has been brought back to help the kingdom. Venix needs Sorsha to save the Fire Court but is there a price to pay

Astos lived as an exile and is Sorsha’s best friend, but when he finds himself in a tough situation He is taken by a race of banished Celestials can he find a way out

Sorsha is a strong person who has only been made stronger by her relationship Bond with her Dragon. Venix took some getting to like but his sister Calandra is brilliant, but when Sorsha and Venix slowly give in to the pull between them although inevitable it was still amazing to see.
This is amazing start to a new series and I can’t wait for the next book and see where the story takes us,
Once you start reading this, you will not be able to stop.
As an ARC reader I received an advanced copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

My first Fae novel! What an introduction!!! From the first pages, A Crown So Cruel grips you with tension, power, and morally tangled characters who don’t apologize for who they are. If you love stories that lean into control, obsession, and characters who operate in shades of gray, this one delivers.

The dynamic between the leads is intense and unflinching. There’s no soft landing, no swoony relief, just pure, high-stakes emotional push and pull that feels earned. The writing balances atmosphere with sharp pacing, so you never feel like you’re waiting for payoff, the tension is the payoff. The author leans into the power imbalance in a way that feels intentional and immersive rather than performative or repetitive. What sold me most was how much depth there is beneath the edge. This isn’t just surface-level dominance; the psychological layers, character motivations, and slow burns are woven tightly into the plot, making every interaction matter.

If you want a dark, cinematic, obsessive read with heart-pounding energy and morally ambiguous characters, A Crown So Cruel is exactly that, and exactly why I couldn’t put it down. A standout in its lane.

If the kingdom that exiled you needed your help, would you step up to the challenge?

A Crown So Cruel is the first book in the War of the Zodiacs, and it will get you hooked. From magic to dragons to a fight against evil, Montero paints a new world that is fascinating to travel through.

Sorsha was exiled by her kingdom and has now been brought back by the High Lord to help the kingdom survive. Venix needs Sorsha to save his kingdom but is there a price too high to pay? Astos lives as an exile and is Sorsha’s best friend, but when he finds himself in a tough situation, can he find a way out?

The interwoven stories of these three characters takes you across the realms of the zodiac and into politics, betrayal, and mistrust. The magic and political systems built are vast and pull you into a world that you will want to fight for. Montero’s writing is detailed but not stagnant with each chapter making you want to jump into the next.

Come join this new world and see if you would be willing to do what it takes to survive.

SASSY Dragon and a Strong FMC

This book. MEGAN! I flew through this one and as a romantasy girlie myself, we get a new world/background.. like ZODIAC SIGNS!?! I love it so much.

Sorsha, our FMC, is my favorite type of character written. She’s sassy, unhinged, and does exactly what she wants. I was laughing at all her snarky remarks the entire book, she’s a badass. Venix, our MMC, is the type that’s a slow burn. You start off literally hating him and then slowly you realize there’s some character development to come and fall in love. AND THE DRAGONS!! Obsessed.

Also I love Megan’s writing, it’s actually my first book I’ve read of hers but I love the imagery and the world she built. This book is almost like you get a standalone of the romance of these characters but the world is just getting started so I know the next books we will still have them in it but get more romance stories so I’m excited to see what is to come.

+ enemies to lovers (she literally is exiled from his court)
+ found family (WAIT UNTIL YOU MEET CALDARA)
+ dark secrets
+ badass female characters (again sorsha AND CALDARA)
+ second chance (they were inseparable as kids)
+ fated mates

This book had me searching all day for moments to keep reading.

This book is better than Fourth Wing, more interesting and dynamic than any other dragon fae book I've ever read. I truly cannot wait to read more books by this author.

I loved the depths of the various characters. I loved everyone for different reasons, felt called to invest in them just as much as the main characters, and wanted to learn more with each page.

The dragons were special, the magic unique from other stories I've read, and the dangers and plot thicker than blood.

There was a little spice - a couple scenes - but nothing crazy. It was 100% plot-driven and it was incredible.

Now I'm dreaming of the second book, hoping for a movie, and loving every second. I rarely read a book twice, but I just might with this one.
