Morning Glories #1-7

Morning Glories Volume 1 Compendium

Rate this book
This posting is for a NEW UNREAD "MORNING GLORIES COMPENDIUM ONE". This book collects "Morning Glories" issues #1-38 in entirety and IN FULL COLOR. Collects #1-38 into one Compendium Trade Paperback BOOKSHELF EDITION (so spine title can be read when placed on a bookshelf). Around 900 FULL COLOR COMIC Pages. $59.99 Cover Price. Written by Nick Spencer and drawn by Joe Eisma. This is NEW UNREAD (so this will have a tight spine and no spine crease like a used one would). Bought and put on a shelf. I have been meaning to find time to read this since I bought it hearing how wonderful the series was, but I am needing room on my bookshelf for my Preacher, The Last Man, Sandman, Alias, Hitman, Bone, Strangers in Paradise, and multiple other trade collections. This is not a first printing of the book, and it was not released in shrinkwrap, so this will look as new as possible as minor shelfwear is hardly seen at all.

This book stops at issue 38, but my spoiler-free review covers issues 1 to 50, a.k.a. volumes 1-10.

One of the disappointing things with comics, like T.V. shows, is that sometimes they just stop without having finished. They planned for 100 issues of this series, broken into 4 "seasons", but only the first 2 seasons have been created. It is uncertain whether it will ever be finished. Thus we may never know whether any of the many mysteries will be resolved or whether they would have just kept piling mystery on top of mystery.

Nevertheless, a fun journey. I watched only one single episode of the T.V. show "Lost" before I guessed that it was the kind of show that would just do a bunch of weird things and never resolve anything. So I chose not to watch it. This comic is inspired by "Lost", so I should also hate it. But I don't. Somehow the characters and their mysteries drew me in. The art is very nice. And I always like Nick Spencer's unlikable characters and their biting dialog.

Oh God said to Abraham, “Kill me a son”
Abe says, “Man, you must be puttin’ me on”
God say, “No.” Abe say, “What?”
God say, “You can do what you want Abe, but
The next time you see me comin’ you better run”
Well Abe says, “Where do you want this killin’ done?”
God says, “At the Morning Glory Academy, DUH.”

Going into this entirely based on the cover, I was shocked. I thought this would be about the juicy lives of kids attending a boarding school, and it kinda is if by juicy, you mean bloody. And if by boarding school you mean twisted and demonic academy. This is an ambitious work, increasingly so, to the point where at the end, I was so confused I just stopped trying to understand it and just kept reading. I enjoyed my ignorant reading, but honestly wish that it had just been about a simple boarding school. If you enjoy gory, complicated reads, then check this baby* out.

*This compendium weighs more than a human baby, I am pretty sure.

Reread all ten volumes of this. It’s fantastic but I hear it’s not going forward with new entries. That’s a bummer because this was great.

The four stars comes with the hope that the series will pull together an ending that will have made the journey worth it. This was a gigantic book- and possibly I am not the ideal reader of it, because I tend to binge on reading and with a work like this, it all sort of seems the same after awhile. But if it can pull off an ending that will tie together the millions of loose ends and make some of the sort of meandering storylines make sense, then I think it could be on par with Lost, as far as interweaving storylines, tons of interesting characters, and general mysteriousness. There is tons of violence, much of it against teens, so if that makes you queasy, stay away.

This giant book was in the new comics section at my local library, and I got all excited because the colors were pretty and the back cover promised mystery and adventure. And then I started actually reading the book after I lugged the door stopper home, and now I am sorely disappointed. I got past the first couple volumes with hopes of improvement or even some ironic lampshading of my gripes listed below, but I got nada.

Gripe the first: the art. Every single character would look the same as anyone else of the same gender if all of them were bald. Same body shape, same facial features. About twenty pages in I started to figure maybe I wasn't the target demographic, because all female characters were superhero proportioned super models, and the only nice likeable guy was a smooge (I made up that word and might replace it if I can think of a better word or phrase. But you know what I mean.) I thought we were past this sort of stuff in the modern mainstream comic world. I mean, it's either that, or the artist is averse to drawing overweight people.

It's not even the social justice aspect that bothers me about the art. Looking at all these skinny people just got boring after a while.

Gripe the second: The evil characters in this book are so caricature-ly evil that I struggled to take any of the plot seriously. I expected Superman or something of his ilk to fly in at any moment and denounce these people as no-good villains. And then he would proceed in a decent punch-out and the art style would be justified.

So I handed the book off to my sister, who is much more tolerant of these sort of things. If she ends up really liking it despite my issues, I'll give the comic another go. Until then, I give it two stars (I would have given it one, but again, I like the colors).

I have extremely mixed feelings about this compendium. The art is amazing. The story is compelling and really sucks you in. You feel for all of the characters. There are a lot of them but they all get detailed back stories and are fleshed out to the degree that you really care about what happens to them. There are reasons why I am only giving this 4 stars though. The villains are cartoonishly villainous. It's almost like the author sat down with the point of making them being so outlandishly evil that there was no way you could root for them at all. It gets ridiculous. Also the art. It is amazingly beautiful, but the characters are amazingly generic looking. Some of the people are only able to be told apart because they wear different outfits. I do really love the story so far though. As of me writing this review there are an additional 11 issues of this not in the compendium with more still being read. Looking forward to tracking them down. If you don't mind the blood and gore and downright depressing at times story, I highly recommend this for all of age comic book fans.

If there were a few more answers and a slightly fewer questions in this volume, it would be an easy five stars. The writing is strong, the characters are interesting and the artwork is good. Unfortunately, at times it seems as though the series doesn't know where it's going. It just keeps asking questions and refuses to provide many answers. I'm hoping subsequent volumes will include the payoffs that are so desperately needed.

MORNING GLORIES is the LOST of comics, and still one of my favorites, but it's been four years since the last issue, and with no return date in sight, my latest re-read of the series left me feeling cold. Here's hoping we'll see its return soon.

Its like every page contained a plot twist! The story doesn't make a lick of sense but it's compelling and keeps a good flow, as well as consistently good artwork. Can't wait to read further into this series!!!

An amazing comic if you enjoy complex plots with lots of lore.
Warning: This comic has been on hiatus for years and will likely never be finished, so do not start it if you're expecting a satisfying conclusion.

This series uses a very similar story telling style to LOST. The characters are good enough to keep me interested even if the story is too complicated for me to completely follow it.

This was over a thousand pages of WTF.

My brain has been thoroughly fucked by this book.
