Appearances can be deceiving in award-winning author Elizabeth Mansfield’s seductive Regency tale about a woman who loses her heart to the one man she has sworn never to love When Jenny Garvin arrives at the Portsmouth pier to see her adored brother sail off on one of His Majesty’s ships, she catches the eye of a tall, well-dressed stranger, who rescues her from a thief. But Captain Tristram Allenby is not what he seems. According to her brother, he is an icy-cold, monstrous tyrant who must be avoided at all costs. Tris Allenby only has eyes for the spirited beauty who has haunted his dreams for the past six months. Now the most sought-after bachelor in London wants the one woman who will have nothing to do with him. The battle lines have been drawn—but there are always two winners in the intriguing game of love.

Another winner from Elizabeth Mansfield💗. The characters are so lovable & the dialogue is well written. Squeaky clean content & pure regency fun. I really enjoyed this!
I reread this book recently and still loved it. It was as good as ever and hard to put down even knowing the outcome. Elizabeth Mansfield has a writing style that I absolutely love, and her books are full of rich, wonderful characters. This book was no exception. The only issue I have with her books is the amount of swear words. Without the swear words it would be perfect.
Content: clean - a dozen swear words, mention of light skirts.
One of my mom’s favorites but I found it a little too simplistic. Sea captain meets meek sister of young midshipman. Nobody sees what a wonderful person she is except for the captain. Girl dismisses captain’s attentions thinking he’s cruel to her brother. Turns out the boy exaggerated and it was all a big misunderstanding.
A sweet tale, even if the heroine was rather insipid. Jenny Garvin is a naive doormat for most of the book, only waking up at the very end when love goes wrong. If I think Tristram Allenby has chosen the wrong woman, well, I'm sure she'll improve with marriage, & plenty of exposure to his delightful mother, Lady Dulcie Rowcliffe, a woman of intelligence, humour & good sense.
This was sweet, actually! I didn't expect to like it. She started off so sheltered and naive and a pushover and oblivious to how her mom and brother looked down on her, but glad to see the character development.
Poor Jenny, saddled with an awful mother and brother, held herself together anyway. I had to admire her and was happy to share in her triumph. Well-written and well-told.
Not her best, the plot is fueled by misunderstandings, but all the same I liked the characters and understood web they misunderstood. and as the book covers maybe 7 months, most of it in 1 month it wasn't too bad. ;)
