Rate this book
Elora Haoyu, ex-convict, con artist in the making, orphan, hopeful chef, fall away artist, and kidnappee of vampires?

On her way to a new beginning El is thrust into the world of the unknown, at the mercy of her kidnapper, Terry—the almost century old vampire that looks like he’s twelve, and his three vampire Ash, Red and Lydia. With red eyes and sharp teeth Elora knows it’s a matter of life and death, so why the hell can’t she stop thinking about Ash’s lips locked on her throat?

She makes quick plans to turn the tables, but why burn them when she can join them?

As their paths steadily intertwine, and Elora learns more about the incorrigible vampires that have taken her under their wing, she soon understands that there are worse things than vampire roommates.

The impossibly lovable boy-vampire Terry, the loud mouth hot-headed Red, the artistic and bubbly Lydia, and the coolly logical enigmatic Ash have no idea what to do with this spicy human that slips out of handcuffs as easy as water and has no problem bashing their heads with various pieces of furniture when provoked. . . But Ash may have ideas.

Can the two sides find common ground when faced with a formidable foe?
Can Elora find her footing in a new world when she’s always felt like her old one never wanted her?

Open the pages of this hilarious and bloody paranormal romcom to find out.

A slow-burn read but with plenty to sink your teeth into! The added bits at the beginning help round out the story without overwhelming the story itself. The key information makes it easier when figuring out who is who and how everyone is connected to each other. A nice change of pace that our FMC has a criminal background, it's really refreshing and helps the reader see what kind of person El is and why she acts the way she does.

The roommates make up a rag tag group that becomes an unusual but loving family. There's never a dull day in the house and I can just imagine the hijinks they would get up to. I'd definitely like to read more about the other roommates and maybe see what happens with their stories. Will Terry find out about his family? Also, I'd be keen to see if Red gets a love interest down the line.

If you’re looking for a fun, chaotic found family with wholesome characters who quickly have you rooting for them, found family and fun banter then this book is for you.

This was honestly such a fun, refreshing read. The world building and vampiric lore was done in such an intriguing way and builds well with the story. El is an intresting character with her own lore and complicated view on life which only becomes more complex when she finds herself thrown into a house of erratically endearing Vampires.
The household quickly worms their way into your heart and will have you fully invested in their relationship dramas and unhinged plans. Honestly they’re written in such a way that I’d love to move in and join into the mayhem myself.

I would love to read more about this group and explore the other characters lore as well as the world they live in.

Overall, this is an enjoyable, trope-aware supernatural ride with a strong protagonist and a cast you want to hang out with—even if the plot occasionally meanders and the tension doesn’t always stick the landing. Not life-changing, but fun, cozy, and promising. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I received this book as an ARC and am happy I did. The book is funny but also has a lot of good story too. I enjoyed the nonsense parts, I loved the found family, the lore here was different and the how vampire society rules & functions was a new twist. I didn’t know I would want another book, but there are a lot of questions left unanswered. Terry, El, Ash, Red, and Lydia were fantastic characters and pretty much how you expect young 20s and teenagers to act. I laughed a lot and I stressed a bit too. There’s more for the story to go so I hope the author gives us a second book, it wasn’t “vampire smut” as the character calls some other books, but there was some spice and very slow burn. I want to know more about her brother, Mona, what’s going to happen with the Seven and Jed, I am also interested in Cass and her story and her plans for Red, will Ash take the trials? All in all it was a quick and fun read that made me care enough about characters that I want a second book for some of those characters and the remaining issues.

I’m going to say this first and loud: I LOVED this book. The characters? Incredible. The humor? On point. The found-family chaos? Absolutely delightful. The concept of an ex-con artist hopeful chef accidentally becoming vampire roommate material? Sign me up immediately.

Elora is a fantastic protagonist — scrappy, sharp, unapologetic, and just unhinged enough to survive being kidnapped by literal vampires. She doesn’t wilt, doesn’t beg, and definitely doesn’t behave like a typical damsel. Watching her navigate danger with sass, stubbornness, and occasional furniture-based violence was pure entertainment.

And the vampires? I adored them. Each one feels distinct and memorable rather than blending into the usual broody-bloodsucker mold. Terry is impossibly lovable, Red is chaos incarnate, Lydia brings warmth and sparkle, and Ash… yeah, Ash is THAT guy 👀 Cool, controlled, dangerous, and impossible not to focus on.

The relationships develop in a way that feels organic and surprisingly heartfelt. Beneath the humor and absurdity, there’s a real sense of loneliness, belonging, and people finding their place with each other when the world hasn’t been kind to them.

Now… my gripe.

The pacing is wildly inconsistent. Some sections fly by in a blur while others linger longer than expected, creating a slightly disjointed rhythm. It never killed my enjoyment, but I definitely noticed it.

And then there’s the art.

Look. The author clearly tried to justify it within the story, and I appreciate the effort — I really do. But we all know that explanation does not make it make sense in a real-world context. Every time it came up, it pulled me out of the narrative just enough to go, “Girl… no.” Which is frustrating, because everything else works so well.

What makes that irritation worse is how much the rest of the book clicks. The characters, the emotional beats, the humor, the tension — it all feels intentional and cohesive. So the art element sticks out even more as the one thing that refuses to blend in.

Despite that, the story itself is genuinely wonderful. It’s fun, heartfelt, chaotic, a little spicy, a little dangerous, and full of characters you actually want to spend time with. By the end, I was completely invested and already wishing for more of this weird little vampire household.

Overall, Vamperetta is a wildly entertaining paranormal romp with lovable monsters, a feral human heroine, and strong found-family vibes — just be prepared to roll your eyes occasionally at certain creative choices while still having an absolute blast.

Huge thanks to @lyrablackauthor for the gifted ARC via @booksprout I'm so grateful 🙏🏻 This is my unbiased review

Comprising of the originally released Vamperetta 0.5, 1, 2 and 3 novellas, this novel is an unusual, light-hearted spin on the traditional gore-filled bloodsucking tale, and makes for a fun, longer read.

Vampires Ash, Terry and Red have more humanity than a lot of humans El knows; El being the girl that Terry just kidnapped. Not to drain her, you understand, but to find out if she knows something of great importance.

As El and the boys get to know each other in a cramped hotel room, the impossible situation becomes something else entirely. Whether it's Stockholm syndrome or friendship, bonds begin to form.

El's sharp tongue and sharper survival instincts are glorious, as is the crackling banter with the boys. Their schemes are deliciously reckless, and the found-family vibe makes the bloodsucking feel almost wholesome. But, as the setting changes and Lydia and other roomies arrive on the scene, El juggles vampire debt, messy loyalties, and the tempting idea that immortality might not be the worst deal.

It’s not perfect—the pacing drags in a couple of spots, and some side players don’t bite as hard as they should—but the energy, sass, and sharp wit more than make up for it. A delight to read, with believable characters you can't help but have a soft spot for from the beginning, A Bad Girls Guide to Vampire Roomates: Vamperetta is a breath of fresh air and something unexpected in the genre.

Verdict: A wickedly fun read with bite, supernatural swagger, and just enough wholesome heart to keep you hooked. Four bloody stars.

I want to begin this review by saying how much I love "Supernatural", especially the earlier seasons. I say this because the MMC, Ash, gives off major Sam Winchester vibes...even tho I'm a Dean girlie through and through 😏. Another aspect about Ash that I loved was how much a nerd he was. There's nothing hotter than attractive nerd with a dark side, who when its necessary and/or pushed "heads will roll". Elora was beautifully chaotic, a bit unhinged but playful, and sassy as the day is long. Who wouldn't love her...a boring person that's who! If you want a crafty, indecisive, yet adorable FMC and a nerdy vampiric "Captain America" coded MMC with a penchant for kidnapping, then this is the book for you. Read, enjoy, and get lost in the nonsensical madness that is the dynamic of the con-artist Elora and her three vampiric "roommates" 🦇❤️‍🔥.

This book didn't really hit the spot for me. It is a fantasy adventure with a spot of human/vampire romance included. I think it is too long and as such it struggled to hold my attention while I was reading, this lead me speed read through certain parts of the story.

The setting is a bit ordinary and grimy for a vampire story where, I suppose, I expect some glamour. In the 2nd half however it gets better and the action at the Spring Solstice event is certainly entertaining.

However my favourite part was the surprising reference to a very popular but rather niche British TV show - The Great British Bake Off.

This was a fun romp! I'm not quite sure I'm the target audience - I felt as old as some of the vampires from time to time as I read on! - but it's definitely an enjoyable take on a busy genre. Lyra Black clearly knows her stuff, and maintains a very human relatability in her mostly-monstrous characters. If anything, this feels like a cosy vampire sit-com/drama, and I'm sure it'd be a success for those who enjoyed 'What We Do in the Shadows!'

Perfect Halloween reading (including for those who celebrate spooky season all year round).

I was kindly sent an early copy of this book by the author, but the above opinions are entirely my own.

The sweetest slowburn that will leave you asking for more. A misfit bunch of vampires end up with a pet human thanks to a half thought idea. Terry thinks El might be his sister and can help him put together the fate of his family before he was turned. What starts as a a research mission turns into a dire situation to make money. A mess of vampire hierarchy and a few bad choices leave the team in peril and on the losing end of vampire games. Eli’s quick wit and never giving up ends up being just what they needed. A great palette cleanser for a dark romance reader like myself.

Vamperetta is an easy-to-read, charming urban fantasy with heart, humor, and a fun cast of characters. It’s perfect if you enjoy paranormal stories with a modern twist, especially if you like a main character who’s a bit of a bad girl and constantly makes life more interesting than necessary. It’s not necessarily a classic within the genre, but definitely an entertaining addition for fans of vampire romance and quirky fantasy.

A delightfully fun, well written paranormal romantic comedy. I love the found family aspect of this as we have a delightful cast of misfit vampires who come thru with more humanity than actual humans even though they just kidnapped, well, an actual human. I found this to be a fun, light romance with sweet and steam and a wonderful cast of characters that deliver humor and more. A great reprieve from the dark romance that usually accompanies a vamp romance read. I so enjoyed it!

Super cute, fun, modern vampire romance. I was lucky enough to be an ARC reader for this book and thoroughly enjoyed it! El is cute and fun, Ash is sweet and hot, the rest of the gang are just your regular lovable vampires with all their different quirks. I loved it and would recommend!!!

This book was adorable. It was not at all serious and a much different take on vampire romance than I've seen.

The ending sequence and Red were my favorite characters, I hope we get to see more of him in the future🤣🤣

I was instantly hooked by the character dynamics and humor in this vampire romance, it was unlike any others I've read. El finds herself kidnapped and in a bed as she hears three voices talking about killing her. The attraction between Ash and El starts with slow-burning tension that keeps you on the edge of your seat. This was much more than just a vampire romance, it was the bond between roommates and their dire situation. I loved the interactions among all of them, plenty of witty banter, comical moments, harebrained schemes, and suspenseful vampire moments. A great slow-burn vampire romance that has great characters and lots of comical relief.
