Arcade Girls: An Unconventional Romance
David would rather die than let his family’s empire fall. All he’s got left of them is an old arcade, but the customers are leaving, choosing home consoles over coin slots.
His only employee? A goth with a soft body and a sharp tongue, strutting around like she owns the place. And his most loyal customer? An oddly innocent girl, obsessed with high scores and unequipped to deal with the wider world.
When trouble hits—bullies at the door, overbearing mothers, and the owner of the bowling alley sniffing around—the girls spark a friendship with each other, and something far more unconventional with David. Saving the place might be the only way they stay together.

Nostalgic Arcade Romance with Heart – Solid 4 Stars
The title, premise, and cover art of Arcade Girls immediately grabbed my attention—promising a nostalgic, quirky romance set against the fading glow of an old-school arcade. I went in expecting something fun and character-driven, and in many ways, that’s exactly what I got.
The story follows David as he fights to keep his family’s struggling arcade alive, teaming up with a goth employee and a high-score-obsessed customer in an unconventional relationship that blossoms amid the chaos. The characters are messy and flawed in relatable ways, making mistakes, growing (sometimes in the right direction), and dealing with external pressures like bullies and family drama. The arcade setting evokes that early-2000s vibe effectively once the time period clicks into place.
That said, the pacing felt slow at times, with the plot taking a while to build momentum. The story also came across as somewhat dated in style and tone—something that became more noticeable when the setting year (2003) wasn’t revealed until near the end. Without that context early on, some elements felt oddly retro or out of step. A few descriptive passages leaned a bit heavy or “much” for my taste, and there were moments where the writing style reminded me of the US version of Backyard Dungeon (even though this is firmly set in the UK).
Despite those hiccups, I genuinely enjoyed the read. The relationships feel earned, the arcade nostalgia hits the right notes, and the unconventional romance delivers some heartfelt (and spicy) moments. If you’re into harem-adjacent or romance-for-men stories with real character growth and a retro gaming backdrop, this is worth checking out.
Solid recommendation for fans of the genre—4/5 stars. I’d read more from Jim Quill.

The mom is cool!
New to me author. I was looking for something new and different and the description sounded interesting. The two girls characters really make the book good. Hope that there is a second book.

Fanatic need a sequel
Was a great read, with very interesting characters. I loved the relationship we were developing between Elizabeth and Melwin and sad we didn't get more. Hopefully we get a sequel.

Start of a great series!
Brilliant contemporary entry into the genre. Very well written with very real, flawed, and wonderful characters. Great story and with great dialogue. Can’t wait for more.
