“I’m sorry to tell you this,” she said… Those are the words that change everything for Camille Carpenter. Before she got the bad news, she’d been happily engaged to a great guy—ok, things weren’t exactly perfect, but she really was content and satisfied. Mostly. But when she finds out certain truths about her fiancé and the engagement ring he gave her? It’s over. She has to move one, and what’s next? She still has a great career, even though her coworkers may drive her crazy. Her apartment is fine, if a little dangerous. Her friends…what friends? What has happened to her life?? She’s suddenly alone in Detroit, and what's she going to do now? Before she realizes it, Camille is swerving into a new situation with a man who seems a little dangerous, a little wild, and a lot handsome. Silas Stone jumps into the picture and promises to solve all her problems—for a price. It gets a lot more complicated when he and his kid sister become crucial to her happiness. They need her, although they might not yet be aware of it. But Camille needs something a man who's interested in commitment, and a bond that's forever. Is that too much to ask for? Maybe so, and if she can’t get it, she’ll have to learn to be happy on her own. Alone. Lonely. Then there’s Silas, with all the muscles and tattoos that a woman could ever want…but does she want him? Does he have feelings for her, and will he ever settle down? With them so different (and with his little sister hating her), how can they make it work? As careful as she is, can Camille take a risk that might lead to love, and happiness ever after? Maybe, because this could be the real thing...
I was happy to see that the newest book in the Detroit ABC series was about Camille (we first met her in Just Juliet, although, this book is a standalone). Camille is an interesting combination of overachiever in her professional life, always holding herself to the highest standards, but also completely stuck in a terrible relationship with her soggy diaper of a fiancé.
I don't want to spoil anything in the book, but thank goodness, she loses the soggy diaper early on in the book and meets Silas who goes out of his way to help her, and does not want to take advantage of her in any way.
I liked Silas as soon as he was introduced, but morally flexible people don't bother me - just so long as they don't harm anyone who doesn't have it coming (which Silas never would). He is what I would call a stand up guy with a shady past.
This book is also very funny and I laughed out loud to an empty room consistently as I was reading it.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone who just wants a nice escape from the real world and enjoys contemporary slow burn romance.
Every time I think Jamie Bennett can’t out do her previous great books, she proves me wrong! This, her latest book, was a most wonderful story with characters you quickly love. This author has a special ability to write characters who are not perfect, and in fact many times quirky, and with realistic faults but to counter that they have so many redeeming qualities. In this book we also see how both Camille and Silas grow and mature and become even better people. And in wonderful Jamie Bennett fashion, there is a heart-warming HEA at the end, just as in all her books. I highly recommend this book and the many other books by Jamie Bennett for their superb quality of writing and storylines.
I love Jamie's characters!! Camille despite her smarts (lawyer) has made poor decisions about her fiancee until she finds out her engagement ring stones aren't real. She should suspect from the get go because she pretty much supports him so where would he come up with the money. I bet he would have an answer but she's drawing a "fed up "conclusion and runs to his work (club with a bouncer) to tell him what she knows. He's caught leaving a storeroom with his zipper undone on his pants with a female bartender who spits on the floor. The story follow what happens next.
I'm a junkie for Jamie Bennett's books. They start slow but then move like a swelling storm of feelings. I cried in this book! Multiple times! And it's not like it was a tear jerker, but the author writes deeply emotional moving lives with an understatement that packs a powerful wallop. Factually, you might call her style deadpan. Everyone seems slightly autistic or ridiculous but loved! Let the good times roll, the problem is I'm addicted. Despite the frequency of her releases (hallelujah), I devour the new ✨️ book with an unstinting voracity. It's a sleepless night at least, but oh. Swoony.
I read all of Jamie Bennett's book. She never disappoints. Careful Camille is excellent. I highly recommend it. And you don't have to read the other books in the series first.
I love all of Jamie Bennett’s book. Another great read! I highly recommend the entire series. Don’t miss out on the chance to check out her sports romances too.
This one was a tough one to rate, the heroine was sooo pathetically wimpy at the beginning. And middle. But the hero and his little sister were awesome, and the ending was perfection.
