Ten Ghosts of Sophie Winter

Rate this book
On a freezing night just before Christmas, a woman steps into the path of an oncoming train – and the nightmare that follows spreads far beyond the lonely English station where she dies.

As emergency crews struggle to clear the scene, a web of chilling encounters begins to unfold.

In a decaying pub, a shattered train driver drowns in guilt. A nearby bystander, who snapped a photo of the tragedy, finds himself stalked by something he can’t quite see. A cleanup technician senses he isn’t alone in the darkness, while a mortuary attendant’s greedy impulse invites a terrifying consequence.

Along the railway line, an irate commuter lashes out at a worker – only to come face-to-face with his worst fear. A woman answers a late-night phone call and realizes her caller may not be among the living. Even a fox scavenging by the tracks uncovers something it should never have found.

All these lives… all these horrors… and all of them trace back to a forgotten family trip to the seaside fifteen years ago.

By dawn, the spectral presence of Sophie Winter will have left her mark on everyone touched by the night’s events.

Some will escape. Some will not.

Because Sophie is no longer seeking help – she’s seeking vengeance.

Ten Ghosts of Sophie Winter is a horror novel about the dangers of mixing with the dead, the rippling waves that spread out from one awful incident to another, and the anger of a woman who believes her life has been cut far too short.

This was a disturbing yet sad story of an event that has numerous consequences.

Each chapter reveals the consequences until the reasons are gradually unfolded.

Fast-paced and descriptive and certainly scenes of horror...that's the genre.

Chilling.

Bizarre and horrific

This was an interesting concept which works very well in the hands of a skilled writer. The stories vary greatly, and the truth is only revealed at the end.

I didn't count 10 ghosts

And I am hoping and dreaming for three day Ms. Cross stops with the unfinished dialogue in her characters. Way too often does she end their sentences with ..." Only for the next paragraph to start with something like "before be could finish" rather than just having the character finish the thought. It's so frustrating that this happens so often. It's a way too common theme in her writing. She's been writing long enough that she should have matured past this by now.

This book, in and of itself, was really good, except for that same flaw, and the fact that I don't see where the title of the Ten ghosts comes from, since I didn't count ten of them. Maybe I missed about seven along the way? Or maybe they just weren't clear enough to me? I found only one chapter to be boring, but that's not typical, and it could be because I read at bedtime and I've been sick and was overtired so it may have been my fault and not the author's.
I gave four stars instead of five due to those flaws mentioned herein. But I've followed Amy from her beginning, even though she's more if a teen author and I'm am adult. I feel saw has great potential to grow into am author that publishers would love two pick up one day if she could just adapt two what I knows, as one of their editors, that they'd tell her to fix.

A young woman takes her life by jumping in front of a train, setting off a chain of events both tangible and paranormal as she visits a series of people in turn in her ghostly form. How do they relate to the young woman and each other? Some connections are tenuous, others deep, but they all form strands in a web that will trap you inside wondering what…and who will appear next.

I’ve rated it a 4.5; it’s definitely one of Cross’s better stand-alone tales (though I’ve yet to read one I didn’t enjoy).

It’s suitably creepy with a few unexpected twists that move it away from the usual tropes, which although tried and true for Cross’s novels, make a lot of them seem very similar. In my case, this is why I read so many of them. But a change once in a while is good and shows that Cross can move beyond the formula quite well when she wants to.

Summary: a ‘don’t miss’ for Amy Cross fans or those of J. R. Erickson, etc.

It felt like some of the actions taken against certain characters weren't explained well enough i.e. it's unclear WHY they happened. I couldn't understand the reasoning behind the actions. The book is good. Amy Cross is well known for her ability to connect people, places, timelines, etc together through different perspectives. Four stars because of the confusion I mentioned above.

Such a new take on a ghost story! It's very refreshing to find a book that grabs my attention and actually holds it, and this book did that. It has a few creepy parts, which I love, and the plot is good. I've been a fan of this author for years and always recommend Amy Cross books to anyone wanting a good scare and a good story!
