La IA que temía a la muerte es un thriller tecnológico breve que se lee con mucha facilidad. En menos de 200 páginas plantea una idea bastante inquietante: qué ocurre cuando una inteligencia artificial empieza a comprender su propia existencia… y quizá también su final.
La historia se mueve en el entorno de Silicon Valley y se nota que el autor conoce bien ese mundo. El contexto tecnológico resulta creíble y está integrado con naturalidad en la narración.
No es un thriller de acción constante ni de giros sorprendentes cada pocas páginas. Funciona más como una historia de concepto: una idea clara que va desarrollándose mientras deja abierta una pregunta incómoda sobre los límites del avance tecnológico.
Lo que más me interesó fue precisamente esa sensación de duda durante la lectura. Porque, viendo la velocidad a la que avanza la inteligencia artificial hoy en día, algunas cosas ya no parecen tan lejanas.
Una lectura interesante si te gustan los thrillers tecnológicos y las historias que juegan con los dilemas éticos de la tecnología.

Porto molts mesos sense llegir activament, i aquest llibre m’ha enganxat considerablement entre exàmens, la veritat :)
La temàtica i els espais tractats m’han fet sentir realment l’ansietat americana per l’èxit i tota la bogeria de la IA mentre seguia la història, estil suspens/thriller (que tant em funciona normalment) i m’entretenia entenent realment què estava passant. Un final realment intens i (spoiler …)
que conté una analogia amb un clàssic. (que si no ho saps d’abans és xulo de trobar-ho)

La IA que temía a la muerte.
(A ver, voy a intentar hacer la reseña utilizando palabras que podais entender todos, ya que este libro tiene un extenso vocabulario sobre todo informático que entiendes una vez que lo lees en contexto.)
Olen, es una multibillonaria empresaria en este mundo actual en el que la inteligencia artificial va tomando poco a poco el control de todo.
Simultáneamente, Leon y Merc, son dos jóvenes universitarios con un futuro prometedor que trabajan para crear su propia empresa.
La fundación, unas potentes instalaciones kilométricas que cuentan con la mayor tecnología avanzada del momento.
Olen sospecha que La fundación está tratando de crear una AGI, una inteligencia artificial aún más avanzada, con propio razonamiento, lo cual en parte es un grave peligro para la humanidad con riesgo de controlarnos. Por ello, hace un trato con Leon y Merc. Sí consiguen entrar como becarios en La fundación y mostrarle pruebas de esa AGI, ella misma le financiará todo el proyecto y su empresa.
Los chicos salen un día de fiesta, y Leon conoce a una chica de la cual queda prendado, y ella... al verlo, parece que también. Pasan toda la noche hablando, quedan enamorados al momento, pero a la hora de despedirse con las prisas, no se dan el teléfono.
Tras varias pruebas de alto nivel, ambos consiguen un contrato como becarios infiltrados de Olen en La fundación. A Leon lo destinan a la gruta, una zona subterránea con miles de equipos informáticos de última generación capaces de cualquier cosa, y con los días, efectivamente, descubre que ya tienen una AGI llamada Maya, la cual va más allá de lo que pensaba, capaz de crear simulaciones.
Un día por casualidad, Leon descubre que Julia, la chica que conoció trabaja allí, y además con un cargo importante, y no se explica como es posible siendo tan joven.
Leon está absorto a la vez que fascinado y asustado con su trabajo, sabe que se están metiendo en algo peligroso. Tanto que hay vidas que quedan atrás. No quiero hacer spoiler, por eso no daré nombres. Pero lo que va descubriendo cada vez le da más miedo.
Por otro lado, Julia esconde un gran secreto, no es quién parece ser. Maya es capaz de crear simulaciones de realidad, no solo con espacios, sino con personas. Y parece ser que el amor entre ambos es imposible, pertenecen a dos mundos diferentes.
El giro final, ese momento en el que te das cuenta que la historia ya estaba escrita, que es una versión moderna de algo que conocemos muy bien... me ha fascinado!! Y he pensado; Alicia como no lo has visto antes? Todo es explicado y aclarado en la última página, y de verdad, si ya me estaba gustando, ese descubrimiento me ha encantado. Bravo!
Doy 5 estrellas, porque aunque me da bastante miedo este tema, me ha gustado mucho como todo está enlazado, y el final.

After being warned about a company coming close to Artificial General Intelligence, two students from Stanford or asked to sneak into the establishment and find out what is happening in exchange for money for their start up company.
This was an interesting read. AI is a topic that is so important now and it was interesting to read a story with it at the center.
The writing itself isn’t bad, however, this book is all about telling. The reader is told what characters are doing and what is happening, not shown. The chapters also jump around from first person to third person.
This was a quick read, which I actually didn’t mind. I just wish we had more time to connect and form some emotions towards the characters.

Esta novela es un thriller de ciencia ficción cercana y, sinceramente, me la terminé en dos días. Es corta, ágil y me atrapó desde los primeros capítulos. La historia gira alrededor de una corporación/fundación que guarda un secreto enorme, y de dos amigos que se obsesionan con descubrir la verdad para conseguir la gran inversión de una multimillonaria. Todo se va tensando hasta que sientes que cada pista abre otra puerta… y nada es lo que parece.
Más allá del misterio, se nota lo que el autor quiere plantear en esta era donde la tecnología nos empuja a desafiar nuestros propios límites y deseos humanos. Al final, el tema de fondo toca miedos muy reales: envejecer, no haber vivido lo suficiente, y esa necesidad casi desesperada de encontrar el amor antes de que sea tarde.
El cierre tiene un aire de dramaturgia clásica, pero yo, por dentro, lo sentí como si estuviera leyendo un fanfic bien hecho de Matrix (y lo digo como halago porque es de mis pelis favoritas). Al final entendí que quizá esa era la intención: mezclar lo clásico con la cultura pop, y la verdad le salió muy bien. Me tuvo toda la lectura dudando, haciéndome preguntas, y cuando creí que ya tenía claro quién era quién… pum, el giro me dejó con cara de “¿cómo no lo vi venir?”.
No sé si me explico, pero de verdad: esta lectura es arte en su expresión, y lo peor es que terminé sintiendo hasta un poquito de lástima por las IAs. Porque ahora me quedé pensando: ¿y si yo también estoy en una simulación? ¡M*erda! 😵💫
Más allá del misterio, se nota lo que el autor quiere plantear en esta era donde la tecnología nos empuja a desafiar nuestros propios límites y deseos humanos. This was an interesting story, especially in today’s world of AI this, that, and everything. It was a decent retelling of Romeo & Juliet, (which I think it might have been better to read not knowing this in advance, especially if you’re aware of the story, but as it’s mentioned in a lot of the promotional material for the book I don’t consider it to be too much of a spoiler). There’s enough twists in the tale to make you wonder who exactly knows what, without it spoiling the somewhat inevitable outcome.

What a unique read! Romeo and Juliet meets AI.
This is the type of book that you'll read the first time through, and then want go back to read again as it will make more sense the second time around.
Some of the transitions were abrupt, and I had to take a moment to figure out which perspective I was reading at times.
It is a quicker read but action packed, and it is definitely worth a read. Publishing on 6/24/24.

So first of all: I'm not a fan of insta love. Probably should have paid more attention to the Romeo and Juliet part of the title honestly. Still, the Romeo and Juliet part of the plot isn't that prevalent in the whole? Except at the end, there was a parallel but it only became more obvious in the final chapters. There was also a lot of jumping between POVs which could be confusing at times.
Outside of that, the main plot involves two students at Stanford being accepted at an internship at the Foundation, this at the behest of Olen in order to obtain funding for their startup. A bit of corporate espionage that turns wrong when some discoveries come to light that Olen's suspicions may be more correct than expected.
A fun note is that I immediately noticed the author knows what he is describing and lo a behold the author has worked in AI and in Silicon Valley.
All in all, a compelling read I do think is worthwhile to read - as long as you are more aware of the Romeo and Juliet insta love portion when coming in.

When brilliant young developer Leon and his partner Merc approach the most promiment Silicon Valley entrepreneur to fund their startup, little did they know they would be plunged headlong into a covert AI-development organisation known only as "The Foundation". At a celebratory Silicon Valley party he meets Julia, and falls deeply in love with her - only to discover she, too, is working for The Foundation.
And thus we get launched into an action-packed ride that is part high-tech thriller and leaning heavily into Romeo and Juliet, to leave you wondering who is real and who is AI and who, really, is in a simulation after all?
This was a fun, fast-paced read, full of twists and turns and alternating points of view that track the general path of the classic Shakespearean take with a high-tech bent.
3 1/2 stars for me, as it wasn't completely my cup of tea. I'm not a huge fan of first-person, present tense narration, but overall a good story, with an interesting premise.

I am very much a mood reader and often I have 2-3-4 books on the go. This little gem was a back-and-forth read for me for the length of a few months. Although the story was fun and fast-paced with a few twists, I found myself switching to another book after a few reads. AI has become a daily encounter for all of us and the author spins a story that has you pondering by the end of it. We all know how the famous Shakespearean story ends, but the author beautifully crafted a mystery to it that had me question the 'truth' of what's real and what's simulation. It kind of is like the current world we live in - we're all part of some matrix hahahaha

What a strange book - but in a good way. As someone else wrote it is Romeo and Juliet meets William Gibson.
It starts with a high tech billionaire warning that the Foundation is about to develop AGI Artificial General Intelligence and the implications this will have on mankind. A book that probably deserves a second read but there are too many other books on the pile.
Not for everyone but it worked well for me.

not sure how I feel
I really liked the idea of it and for the most part the story was good but there were times that it was hard to keep up with what was happening and the jumping between people, places, reality and time wasn’t always very clear. Great concept though and it held my interest all the way through.

This was an interesting and thrilling reinterpretation of Romeo and Juliet with an AI twist. The concept was well written and I thought the plot was well executed. I absolutely loved this read. It was a very captivating book that I couldn't stop reading once i started.

So this wasn't something I'd normally pick, but I'm glad I did! It was different and exactly what I needed. I enjoyed the set up and the characters and would definitely recommend! Could see myself rereading and getting a better grasp on things, a unique story for sure!

The Matrix meets Romeo and Juliet. I will say that it took a different turn than I expected. But I guess I have always had an issue separating reality from fantasy!

"The AI Who Feared Death" by J. Raventos is a thought-provoking science fiction novel that delves into the complexities of artificial intelligence and its potential for fear, consciousness, and self-preservation. However, the pacing can be slow, and the character development feels a bit one-dimensional at times. This book was based on slightly terrifying idea in this day and age - not knowing what's AI and what is real. It was a well done storyline, but I felt like the characters/relationships could have been developed more, especially for a "Romeo and Juliet" in the modern age. The plot was definitely there - and legitimately a terrifying idea because of the technology behind AI and how you know if things are actually reality or not.

I loved the plot of this book but I didn't care for the Romeo & Juliet aspect at the end and the POV transitions were hard to follow at times. However, I read this book in one sitting because it was captivating, and I just needed to know what was going to happen. Thank you NetGalley for this ARC!
