My first Morgan Rice book - DNF at 40% (so no rating given).
There are very few books that I stop reading. I always want to give the author respect for the time and effort they have put in, and allow the story to unfold to see if it can capture my imagination.
This is one of the rare books I just could not carry on with.
Unfortunately the writing style is very repetitive, and seemed like it was written by a high-schooler. Very heavy on the telling, the multiple POV just doesn’t work, it adds no character depth at all.
The magical theory is very simple but even by 40% I still wasn’t sure what the magic of a vow actually did… it is neither shown nor explained.
I felt no empathy for Briar, no contempt for her sister, no dislike of Damien and no swooning for Kieran. Just meh.
I won’t continue with the series (obviously) and am not interested in other books by this author. In fact, I did some research after I put the book down, and there are quite a few people who feel this author doesn’t actually exist. Very interesting to read some of the threads. I apologise if there is a person churning out these books.
I was given an ARC of this new fantasy series and I enjoyed it.
Briar is the princess of a realm reliant on oath magic...hers would supposedly keep the land stable, but what of her choices? Forced to be betrothed to a prince from another area so to keep alliances fresh, Briar becomes a prisoner, though nothing is straightforward.
I loved the concept of being one with nature and healing. I liked the dilemmas and tension.
As the characters are introduced, the plot is revealed - well done.
The only reason I pushed through finishing this book is because it was such a quick read, otherwise it would have been a DNF easily.
The concept of the vowsworn and oath breaking could have been really interesting, but the book just had nothing to back it up or flesh it out whatsoever. There was basically no world building and we’re thrust into her taking this supposedly huge oath 10 minutes into the book. What exactly does it do? What is the meaning of it? What are the rules for not breaking it? Who knows! There are multiple other mentions of different oaths, but barely any additional information is given. The army has oath power but without it is useless, I guess? The hunters oath makes her grow scales? Mkay.
The romance is very PG, very rushed, and pretty boring. The villain is evil, the wicked stepmother and stepsister bit didn’t really land, and the overall writing was pretty repetitive and a lot of telling instead of showing. Reading “undeterred” and “deterred” in consecutive sentences was jarring. Cool idea, tough read!
First book by Morgan Rice! I enjoyed the story and am curious to see what happens in the series.
Briar is next in line for the throne. Her marriage is arranged, and her vow has been sworn. When she meets Kieran, an herbalist, she begins to see the future she truly wants, putting themselves and the kingdom at risk.
The story was alright with good characters but it was not what I thought it was going to be, more of a romance than a fantasy and it took a long time to progress as far as it got. It reminded me of a Cinderella sort of vibe.
This is a promising first book in a new fairytale woe series, promising to be very intriguing. I’m eagerly awaiting the next installment and I love the characters.
