When I saw it was book 4 in a series I was a bit worried I had missed too much to jump into the middle of a series but it was totally find. THIS CAN BE READ AS A STANDALONE. While the author doesn’t necessarily give the reader a full recap it’s enough of a little glimpse to get you up to speed without being super repetitive to readers who have been along for the ride since the first book. I love it when authors can do that well. I think it keeps old readers engaged while also bringing new readers into the fold.
This book gets right into it with a breakout during a prisoner transport. The criminal breaking out is a guy who just so happens to be part of a cartel. So a seriously bad dude.
It seems that there were a lot of things that got resolved in this book which carried over from earlier books. So I’d like to go back and read the earlier books in the series.
The main character gives off strong female energy which I always think is a lot of fun.
If you’re looking for action packed…look no further.

* Veranda Cruz & Lt. Diaz – Still the emotional slow burn of the series. Their trust, chemistry, and mutual respect continue to build, and the ending leaves you hoping they’ll finally become a couple in a fifth book.
* Chuy & Tiffany – One of the most enjoyable relationships in the series. Chuy’s humor, loyalty, and heart make him a standout character, and it’s fun watching their relationship develop.
* Nacho & Sophia – Their relationship adds warmth and stability to the story, and they’re another couple you’re left wanting to check in on in future books.
* Lorena – A capable, loyal member of the team who continues to shine and strengthen the group’s dynamic.
* Anna Diaz – A wonderful supporting character who adds warmth to the Diaz family and helps show another side of Lt. Diaz beyond the badge.
* Lopez & Rios – The Mexican federal agents are excellent partners to Veranda. Their professionalism and camaraderie make the cross-border investigation especially engaging.
The reason Exit Wound worked so well for me wasn’t just the case—it was the cast. It was a quick, easy read with characters I genuinely cared about. By the final page, I wasn’t thinking, “I wonder what the next mystery will be?” I was thinking:
* Will Veranda and Diaz finally get together?
* What’s next for Chuy and Tiffany?
* How are Nacho and Sophia doing?
* Will Lorena, Lopez, and Rios be back?
* Can this whole “family” reunite for another case?
That’s why I’m hoping for a Book 5. The Villalobos storyline reaches a satisfying conclusion, but these characters still have plenty of stories left to tell.

Exit Wound wraps up the long-running battle against the Villalobos cartel and is one of the most satisfying books in the series because it balances a tense crime thriller with the relationships you’ve grown to love.
Veranda Cruz throws everything she has into finally bringing down the Villalobos organization. The investigation is dangerous, deeply personal, and requires close coordination between her team and Mexican law enforcement. After multiple twists, close calls, and betrayals, the organization is finally dismantled, bringing long-awaited justice.
Veranda & Lt. Diaz ❤️
The slow-burn romance continues to simmer. Diaz remains steady, protective, and completely respectful of Veranda’s independence. They trust each other implicitly and repeatedly risk themselves for one another. By the end, the emotional connection is undeniable, even though they still haven’t officially become a couple.
My biggest takeaway from the book: I desperately want a Book 5 where Veranda and Diaz finally get together.
Chuy & Tiffany
Chuy is once again one of the stars of the novel. He’s funny, loyal, brave, and brings heart to every scene he’s in. His growing relationship with Tiffany is one of the most enjoyable subplots, and it feels like they’re building toward a real future together. They’re easy to root for. Chuy continues to be an important part of Veranda’s extended family. You can’t help but want to see where everyone’s relationships go next.
Nacho & Sophia
What will happen with the money he kept. Will they get together? Will she choose Nacho or the money?
Lorena
Lorena is another standout supporting character. She’s smart, capable, and fiercely loyal, contributing quietly the storyline. She adds depth to the story dynamic and is one of those characters who quietly makes every scene better.
Anna Diaz
Anna Diaz brings warmth and humanity to the story and helps round out Lt Diaz and helps people see him as more than just Veranda’s lieutenant. Her presence gives readers another glimpse into the personal side of the Diaz family and reinforces the strong themes of family, loyalty, and looking out for one another that run throughout the series.
Lopez & Rios
The Mexican federal officers are fantastic additions. Lopez and Rios become true partners rather than temporary allies. Their professionalism, courage, and camaraderie with Veranda’s team make the cross-border investigation one of the strongest parts of the novel. I’d love to see them return in future books.

Why I Loved It
This was simply a fun, fast-paced read. The mystery was engaging, but what really made it memorable was the cast.
By the end, I found myself caring as much about the characters’ futures as I did about solving the case:
* Veranda and Diaz finally admitting their feelings.
* Chuy and Tiffany building a life together.
* More of Nacho’s adventures.
* Seeing Lorena continue to grow.
* Spending more time with Anna Diaz.
* Watching Lopez and Rios team up with Veranda again.
If Isabella Maldonado writes a fifth Veranda Cruz novel, I’ll be reading it—not because the Villalobos story needs more, but because I want to spend more time with this group of characters. They feel like a family, and that’s what makes the series stand out.

Exit Wound by Isabella Maldonado is a gripping thriller that delivered everything I wanted from Isabella Maldonado. Veranda Cruz is pushed to her limits here, and I loved how the story keeps tightening the pressure around her from both sides—professionally and personally—until every choice feels dangerous.
The stakes are brutal, the pacing is relentless, and the sense of inevitability hanging over the story makes it impossible to put down. I was especially drawn to the way Maldonado builds Veranda’s emotional and moral conflict alongside the action, so the thriller elements never feel flat or mechanical.
What made this a five-star read for me was how satisfying the confrontation felt. Hector Villalobos is a formidable antagonist, and the showdown has the kind of intensity that makes a long-running arc feel earned. Veranda’s determination, grit, and vulnerability all come through so clearly that I was rooting for her the entire way.

As a fan of Isabella Maldonado’s Daniela Vega series, as well as the Sanchez and Heron series co-written with Jeffery Deaver, I was very much looking forward to reading this fourth book in the Veranda Cruz series. Before starting
Exit Wound,
I read the first three books -
Blood’s Echo, Phoenix Burning,
and
Death Blow.
I thoroughly enjoyed all four books in this series.
Detective Veranda Cruz is driven by an obsession to bring down the Villalobos crime family. She has compelling reasons for that determination, which is why I strongly recommend reading the series in order. Veranda’s pursuit comes at a tremendous cost, both personally and professionally. Her journey often feels like one step forward and two steps back, but no matter the setbacks, she never wavers from her goal.
Veranda and Hector Villalobos, the ruthless head of the crime family, are locked in a fierce and relentless battle. Villalobos proves to be a formidable adversary, matching Veranda’s determination at every turn. The pacing throughout the series - and especially in this final installment - is fast and intense, filled with action, suspense, and danger.
One of my favorite aspects of the series is the Cruz family itself. Their love and loyalty to one another shine through in every book. When Veranda is forced into a safe house, her adoptive father, Chuy Cruz, immediately barges in to support her and remain by her side. Family is his highest priority, and even his girlfriend, Tiffany, understands and respects his unwavering devotion.
I also appreciate how strongly the themes of family and loyalty run throughout the series. Without giving away any spoilers, Exit Wound also offers a powerful perspective on the age-old nature-versus-nurture debate.
Raquel Beattle has done a fine job narrating this compelling series. Fans of fast-paced crime thrillers, strong female protagonists, and stories that balance action with emotional depth will find much to enjoy in this satisfying conclusion to the Veranda Cruz series.

Detective Veranda Cruz is more determined than ever to bring down the powerful Villalobos Cartel. As she relentlessly pursues the organization, she finds herself forced to make difficult decisions that put not only her own life at risk but also the safety of her family, their homes, and their restaurant. With danger closing in from every direction, Veranda must decide just how much she is willing to sacrifice in her pursuit of justice.
My Thoughts
One of my favorite aspects of this series is Veranda's unwavering loyalty to both her job and her family. She is willing to do whatever it takes to protect innocent people and bring criminals to justice, even when the personal cost is incredibly high. I also appreciated that her personal connection to Hector never prevented her from staying focused on pursuing the crime family.
This story is packed with twists and turns and had plenty of edge-of-your-seat moments that kept me eager to see what would happen next. Every time I thought I had things figured out, another surprise kept the suspense going.
I also appreciated that, unlike the previous novel, this installment didn't spend as much time focusing on Veranda's personal love life or the multiple men interested in pursuing a relationship with her. Instead, the story stayed centered on the investigation and the high-stakes action, which made for a much stronger reading experience.
The pacing was excellent throughout, balancing suspense, character development, and action without ever slowing down.
I had the opportunity to experience both the advance reader copy provided by Thomas & Mercer and the audiobook from Brilliance Audio. The narrator did a fantastic job bringing the story and its characters to life, making the audiobook just as engaging as the print edition.
Overall, Exit Wound is a thrilling addition to the Veranda Cruz series. If you're a fan of fast-paced crime thrillers filled with suspense, strong characters, and nonstop action, this is one you won't want to miss.

I listened to a book this author co wrote with Jeffery Deaver and loved it, so when I saw she was a writer in her own right, I thought I would give her a chance. Oh boy, am I glad I did! I loved it. I think she might even be better than Mr Deaver himself at writing an engaging and captivating story. I was literally sat on the edge of my seat waiting to see how things would unfold and who would survive.
This is book four in the series and I might have missed out on a lot of back history (which I will be correcting very shortly) I never felt left behind in this fast moving explosive read. The story was written so well that you got the backstory with out slowing down the action and suspense, making it great for first time readers or long time fans of the series. I
I liked the characters, well the ones you are meant to like and hated the ones you weren't. It's the type of story that had you worrying if you would be reaching for the tissues at any moment and a few times my heart might have beat faster. Nope not giving away any spoilers here. You will just have to read it yourself and trust me you won't be disappointed.
When an enforcer for the Villalobos family is caught, Detective Veranda Cruz wants to be on taking the crime family down but the family is not willing to go easy and stage a recuse. Things don't go all there way and they are unable to extract there revenge on Cruz. With the Villalobos's losing ground from previous takes down they are struggling to stay in power. So when a coyote turns on one of there own and the big boss sends his son to clean up the mess and retrieve something that could see him gaining some power back, Cruz and her team finally have the chance to bring them to an end. That is it course as long as they don't become the hunted themselves.
I liked the narrator. She was perfect for the story and brought the tension and drama to life.

This is book four in the series and I might have missed out on a lot of back history (which I will be correcting very shortly) I never felt left behind in this fast moving explosive read. The story was written so well that you got the backstory with out slowing down the action and suspense, making it great for first time readers or long time fans of the series. I
I liked the characters, well the ones you are meant to like and hated the ones you weren't. It's the type of story that had you worrying if you would be reaching for the tissues at any moment and a few times my heart might have beat faster. Nope not giving away any spoilers here. You will just have to read it yourself and trust me you won't be disappointed.
When an enforcer for the Villalobos family is caught, Detective Veranda Cruz wants to be on taking the crime family down but the family is not willing to go easy and stage a recuse. Things don't go all there way and they are unable to extract there revenge on Cruz. With the Villalobos's losing ground from previous takes down they are struggling to stay in power. So when a coyote turns on one of there own and the big boss sends his son to clean up the mess and retrieve something that could see him gaining some power back, Cruz and her team finally have the chance to bring them to an end. That is it course as long as they don't become the hunted themselves.
I liked the narrator. She was perfect for the story and brought the tension and drama to life.

She graduated from the FBI National Academy in Quantico and the first Latina to attain the rank of captain in her police department; she retired as the Commander of Special Investigations and Forensics.
After retiring she moved to Phoenix to write, and we are delighted she did!

At times, that made some of the relationships and motivations harder to appreciate, but the deeper I got into the story, the more invested I became.

I listened to the audiobook, and the narrator did an excellent job bringing the large cast of characters to life. The distinct voices made it easy to follow the action, and the seamless handling of the many Spanish names added an extra layer of authenticity to the listening experience.
Beyond the action and suspense, the novel explores themes of family loyalty, identity, and the age-old question of nurture versus nature. As secrets are revealed and allegiances tested, the story asks how much of who we become is shaped by our upbringing and how much is simply in our blood.
By the end, I was completely absorbed in Veranda's world and curious to go back and discover the earlier books in the series. Exit Wound AUDIO by Isabella Maldonado is a Veranda Cruz novel. Veranda is a detective with the Phoenix Police Department. She had been looking to catch and convict a cartel leader called Hector Villalobos, who coincidentally turned out to be her biological father, a fact she was not proud of. She considered herself her mother’s daughter, not her father’s, whom she didn’t even know. Things were moving quickly, all of a sudden. She and her partner, Sam, were called to a murder. A man she knew as part of part of Villalobos’ crew. But, it had been staged to look like a rival gang killing, but Veranda didn’t think so. Then, they got word that one of Villalobos’ sons, and another man were in Phoenix. Did they have anything to do with this? Veranda went to Chewie’s (her cousin) garage where she had been staying in his apartment above it. Only when her phone buzzed, and buzzed again, did she become aware than there was someone there. She moved just as a gun went off. A fight followed and the man’s identity soon became apparent. The fought and eventually she got her hands around his. The the gun went off and his head was blown to bits.
Veranda is an excellent, if sometimes too independent, police officer. She is also a devoted daughter and family member. If you’ve been following the Veranda Cruz series, you already know that our central character has very strong Latino female energy and is a law enforcement super hero — but she has some major family issues, and not just the Mexican crime family she’s determined to destroy.
The main villain still is Hector Villalobos, the Mexican based head of a sprawling Western Hemisphere crime family. He’s playing his two sons off each, the illegitimate Salazar and the legitimate Adolfo (only survivor of four siblings who each spectacularly disappointed their common father). The action starts with a prisoner transfer gone wrong, one that releases Salazar back into the wild. Veranda’s troubles with Hector began before she was born, when Hector killed the man she thought was her father and assaulted her mother Lorena. Lorena had stood up to the Villalobos family and fled to America, but Hector is still haunting her and her daughter. Veranda will finally end this.
This is an action-packed thriller made even better by Raquel Beattie’s solid narration of this strong woman. There’s never a boring moment and there are times when you wonder if the bad guys are just going to wipe each out and do Veranda’s work for her. A good police procedural as well as a strong family drama. 4 stars!

Former FBI agent Nina Guerrera is at the centre of the story, and her determination, resilience and sharp instincts make her a compelling lead from the outset.
The novel opens with a seemingly straightforward shooting, but as Nina begins to investigate, she uncovers links to a much larger and more dangerous conspiracy. What follows is a race to uncover the truth before more lives are lost. The author balances the investigative elements with high-stakes action, creating a story that rarely lets up once it gets going.
Nina’s personal history continues to inform her decisions without overwhelming the plot, and her relationships with those around her add emotional depth to the story. The supporting characters are well developed, particularly as loyalties are tested and the danger escalates.
The pacing is excellent throughout, with short chapters and well-timed twists keeping the momentum high. While some of the action stretches credibility at times, the sheer energy of the storytelling makes it easy to stay fully engaged.

The story of Veranda Cruz continues but knowing what came before you would have to wonder why she would agree to some of the conditions one of her worst enemies is demanding. Undoubtedly it is because she is Veranda Cruz, biological daughter of a monster, who if he can’t control her, wants her dead. This is another fast paced, crime drama that has few equals. Maldonado know how to draw her characters, constantly testing them, placing them in harms way and then stepping back to allow them to maneuver. She puts it out there - depicting a murderous leader of a drug cartel who pits his children against each other, not caring whether they survive, only curious to see who will become the ultimate and surviving alpha. She weaves a tense, sophisticated plot with turns and tangents I never saw coming. Wondering how this was going to turn out I held my breath in so many places, trying to remember to breath, turning the pages, not able to put it down.
I love this series, the characters and how they are developing individually, as partners, love interests, as a team and in so many ways a family. A tenacious detective and a cartel showdown years in the making.
If you love a good detective story, Veranda Cruz is easy to fall for. She's dogged, sharp, and personally tangled up in the case in a way that gives every move real stakes—her long crusade to bring down the Villalobos crime family has already cost her, professionally and personally, and Exit Wound is where it all comes to a head. Isabella Maldonado spent decades in law enforcement before she started writing, and it shows: the procedural details feel authentic, the investigation moves with purpose, and the tension never lets up.
What sets this apart from a standard cop story is that Maldonado takes you inside the crime family too. Cutting between Veranda's side and the Villalobos patriarch pulling the strings gives the whole thing a cat-and-mouse charge, and the Phoenix setting and Latin flavor make it feel distinct. It builds to a genuinely satisfying confrontation.
My one caveat, and why it's four stars: this is the fourth Veranda Cruz book and very much the culmination of an ongoing war. I'd have felt the emotional payoff more if I'd started at the beginning—newcomers may feel they're walking into the final act of a longer story. It's also more action-forward than slow-burn puzzle, if that matters to you.

Well, I have got myself in quite a jam here. I downloaded the Kindle version of this first book in this series a few years back and it has sat on my virtual bookshelf unread since then. That definitely would have helped in reading this book.
I am familiar with the author from her series with Jeffrey Deaver. So, in reading “Exit Wound”, it was tough in that I didn’t understand the dynamics of all that was going on with this family and what all was going on with the antagonist. Comparing the two series isn’t quite fair.
The action was intense and writing was good in this novel. The emotion was brought out even though I had no connection to the characters involved. So, if you are like me and late in joining the Veranda Cruz series, I highly recommend going back to the beginning and following it through to “Exit Wound”. But if you choose to join in process like I did, then know there is a bit of catching up you will have to do.

I am a fan Isabella Maldonado and Exit Wound was very entertaining. There was so much action, awful men, vengeance and the feeling of uncertainty and fear was always felt in the air. I enjoyed Jesus "Chuy" Cruz' character and the family dynamics. Reading about Veranda's mom, Lorena, was heartbreaking but inspiring. Overall, a great read with lots of exhilarating moments and sweet family interactions.

I have been waiting for this book for YEARS! I am soooo grateful Ms Maldonado was able to conclude this story! I love this author, I have read and own all of her books. Great thriller!

LOVED: What Salazar did at the end! Really enjoyed reading the downfall of El Lobo. Realllllly truly loved Veranda coming to love herself and having her mom confront her. Loved that we got more snark with her team.
What made me dock half a star:
The Diaz/Veranda build up throughout the series and then......nothing. Usually at the end of her books the heroines get a little mini happy "dating?" ending but these two didn't. He basically was just like 'oh now I can empathize with you, my bad' I mean I am glad he realized that El Lobo was never going to stop (duh!) But I was hoping for just a little more for them, him admitting he has feelings and that he transferring back to his old job so they could maybe give it a shot. Idk, just a little sad about it.
I will continue to read and fan girl over her amazing books as long as she keeps writing them!

Isabella Maldonado is one of my favorite authors, and I was thrilled to learn about this latest installment in her Detective Veranda Cruz series. The prior novel in the series (Death Blow) left a lot of questions unanswered and story lines hanging, and Exit Wound served as a perfect follow-up. While I am unsure if this is intended to be the final novel in the series, I would absolutely love to read more Veranda Cruz novels. Exit Wound is a fast-paced thriller that pits Veranda, along with her colleagues and family, in a final, ultimate battle against the dangerous and notorious Villalobos crime family. I love how Maldonado writes about Veranda's relationships with her family, extended family, and colleagues and how she keeps the reader guessing who will live, who will die, and how everything will end.

I was so excited to get my hands on Exit Wound early!
As with the other books, there's a strong investigative build-up that keeps things moving, and I appreciated how the author included small reminders from earlier books to help connect everything without it feeling repetitive.
What stood out most to me was how things wrapped up for Veranda personally. I'm really happy she finally got the closure she needed, especially when it comes to her family. That part of the story felt meaningful and well done. I am excited that the author is going to continue Veranda's story further, so we might get more of her relationship with Diaz!
Overall, I gave this one 4 stars and I'm definitely looking forward to whatever Isabella Maldonado writes next!

Exit Wound is fast paced, action packed with short punch chapters that will have you reading just one more.
Although this is the 4th book in the series you can read it as a stand alone: I did with no troubles but I will go back and read the first 3 as I enjoyed Veranda Cruz very much
The story is gripping from start to finish with characters you love and those you love to snarl at.
Veranda Cruz life is in constant danger but that doesnt stop her or her team.
The bodies pile up quickly as you sit on the edge of your seat.
I was worried for Veranda more than once and held my breath many times.
Good versus evil: family supporting each other and so much more.
I cant wait for Book 5 in the series and am looking forward to catching up on the series.

I don't know if this will be the last book in this series, if so it wrapped up things well, if not then there will be new adventures and foes for Veranda.
So much of this one was hit so close to home for Veranda. She was still dealing with learning who her father was and what a nightmare that was. Nothing like having a POS, who is only out for himself, damn anyone else, even his blood. I kinda liked how things were resolved there, couldn't have happened to a better person, but wished the innocent people didn't have to go through what they did.
I found myself liking Nacho's secret at the end, he's earned that and I hope he can figure out a way to make things work for him and those he wants to share with.
The speech at the end by Veranda's mother was great! Just what she needed to hear, especially after all they went through in this one.

Phoenix Detective Veranda Cruz has dedicated her career to wiping out the Villalobos Mexican crime family. Her past successes have put her on their radar as well, and the patriarch of the family has announced that whichever of his two remaining sons will inherit the empire will have to eliminate Veranda as part of their earning of the title. This is a fast-paced, exciting story. Veranda is a smart and strong character. In addition to all the action, Maldonado layers in themes of family and loyalty, and whether our lives are preordained by our DNA. This is the 4th book in the series and there is a lot of carry-over from previous books, so I recommend reading them in order to fully appreciate the story. This is the first one I've listened to, and I thought Raquel Beattle did an excellent job on the narration.

I was disappointed with this final chapter of Veranda Cruz’s vendetta against the Villalobos crime. The story seemed hurried, and repetitive information slowed it down. Patriarch Hector’s thirty-year empire is in shambles as he personally takes on the chore of salvaging the key to what remains of his wealth. When that is unavailable, he and his illegitimate son seek revenge against their nemesis, Varanda.
I found the failure to guard Varanda as unreasonable. Also, the climax was drawn out far too long. After the rescue, the following pages dragged on to the point of boredom. There was no resolution of Varanda’s personal life.
Overall, I don’t regret taking on this series. It held my interest and was an enjoyable read in spite of its many problems.

I was fortunate enough to get this copy from NetGalley. Veranda Cruz is my favorite of Isabella Maldonado's books. She's the perfect badass with lots of swag and smarts to kick anyone who gets in her way. I was surprised to see the book in NetGalley because I've been waiting for the finale in this series. Wow, this packed the ultimate punch with lots of edge-of-your-seat suspense, action, and intense thrills!
My suggestion to the readers is that they read the series to understand what has brought Veranda Cruz to this point in her story, and the culmination of what has been the bloodiest and most brutal moments ever! Just take a deep breath and get ready to immerse yourself in one of the best (bestest) in Veranda's life. I can't offer more because I'd wind up spoiling the story for you.

I love the way Isabella Maldonado writes strong female protagonists. Besides this Veranda Cruz series, she also writes Daniela Vega and Nina Guerrera series I started reading her books with the Sanchez & Heron series that she coauthors with Jeffery Deaver. After I read the first three Veranda Cruz books I realized that the series, I imagine so she could focus on her other series. The last book in this series came out in 2019 but this fourth book in the series picks right up where the third book left off. I. I strongly recommend starting with the first book, "Blood's Echo" and read this series in order. The story continues from book to book. I also recommend all of her other series. Highly recommended
