In a desperate bid to restore peace, Song Qingshi proposes a vacation together. The start of this volume really positively surprised me. Based on the end of the previous vol and the cover of this one I was afraid assumed that Song Qingshi will be in a coma for the majority of this vol, while Yue Wuhuan and An Long are gonna fight all the time. And I really didn't want for Wuhuan to be alone for so long. My prediciton was partly true. Song Qingshi really was in a coma for ten years, while An Long and Yue Wuhuan were fighting with each other, however, this part was shown to us through flashbacks, so it didn't exactly feel like Wuhuan and Qingshi were "parted" for such a long time.

He must've collected good karma from three lifetimes to meet such a sweet little angel! Yue Wuhuan was brilliant, beautiful, kind, cute, gentle, and considerate too.

Song Qingshi is still so funny. Bless his naive, innocent soul that only sees good in Wuhuan because that poor kid really needs it. Meanwhile, Yue Wuhuan's thoughts are like this:

"Yes, Zunzhu, you're the best." Yue Wuhuan chuckled. To the point that I want to eat you up, he thought.
Song Qingshi blushed from Yue Wuhuan's compliment.

I probably said that a hundred time in my previous volume already, but they are truly so precious together. They are both a little (or a lot) lost and confused about many things, and they both went through so much, and we can say they are very lucky to find each other because together they make one another whole.

Without room for argument, he pulled Yue Wuhuan onto his back.
Yue Wuhuan tried to resist. "I can walk."
"No, it's too dirty here," Song Qingshi reprimanded him. "You hate dirty things, so stay on my back and be good. Don't move."
Yue Wuhuan looked at the mud covering Song Qingshi, pained. "I hate you being dirtied even more."
"It's fine. My clothes were dirty already. [...] And it's not like it can't be washed off. When we get out of here, we'll disinfect everything. It'll be clean then."
Yue Wuhuan squeezed his arms around Song Qingshi's shoulders as he buried his face in his neck. Sadness weighed on his heart with his every breath of that comforting scent.
"What if..." Yue Wuhuan's voice faltered. "What if it can't be washed off?"
"Then we'll wash it a few more times," Song Qingshi said easily. "It always comes out eventually."
"I can't be washed clean," Yue Wuhuan whimpered, burrowing closer.
"I'll help you."

Song Qingshi's simple answer startled a laugh from Yue Wuhuan. They were thinking of completely different things, but the intent was sweet. He smoothed the soft wisps of Song Qingshi's hair that were flying loose and snuck a kiss at his earlobe. He longed to wrap his lips around the cute little thing, but he couldn't.

There are so many heartbreaking scenes in this volume (well the whole book probably). Everytime Yue Wuhuan talks about how dirty he is, and that he will never be clean again, it's so hard to read. It was truly horrible what was done to him, especially because he can't escape the past. No matter how many times Song Qingshi comforts him, Yue Wuhuan still thinks that this "blemish" will stay with him forever. While Song Qingshi was in a coma, he had to deal with it alone and poisoned himself to ruin his beautiful face, and I have a feeling that now he feels a little better about himself, but I really hope that now that Song Qingshi is back together with him, he will start healing without the need to harm himself.

Before I totally venture into only tragic stuff, let's say something about the general plot of this volume that was actually really funny in some parts. Song Qingshi gets an idea to make Yue Wuhuan and An Long friends - I think mainly so that they would stop destroying his Medicine Valley (and each other) with their fighting. This goes as well as you can expect from trying to get two individuals, who 1.) hate each other 2.) trying to possess Song Qingshi by all means 3.) are totally crazy and very murderous - to get along with each other. Which means this goes spectaculary wrong. But it was very funny to watch these two trying to behave for Song Qingshi's sake.

What I also find very funny is how Wuhuan and An Long are constantly hovering over Song Qingshi are trying to protect him from literally everything, which ok validly on point since Qingshi really is too trusting but at the same time he can definitely hold his own. And he might be the one calling Wuhuan 'his little angel' but in reality he's the one with innocent, angelic appereance 😇 and then he says stuff like this. While looking totally angelic, no doubt.

"I gave up a long time ago," Yue Wuhuan laughed. "If you get rid of those animals, every one, you'll turn this world into a mountain of bones and sea of blood. You'll have to destroy everyting..."
Even if he was a madman, he knew it was impossible.
"If you want mountains and seas of death, then that's what I'll give you," Song Qingshi said. He held Yue Wuhuan fast. "I'll do my best. As long as I draw breath, I'll keep going. I won't give up!"

I have a feeling that this review is such a mess, and that I'm jumping from theme to theme. But my emotions about this book are also a mess, so have patience with me ☺️ anyway, I love so much how Song Qingshi and Yue Wuhuan are so right for each other. Maybe others don't understand them but they fit together so good!!

"All right," Song Qingshi said, refocusing on Yue Wuhuan. "I won't do anything Yue Wuhuan doesn't like. I won't even think about it," he promised.
"Thank you, Zunzhu. You're the best." Yue Wuhuan sounded satisfied.
"But... what is it you
would like me to do?"
"I want you to raise little white mice with me. Do experiments with me. Study with me. Watch clouds with me too."
Song Qingshi nodded. "I will."

Just look at them!! 🥰🥰 They are so precious to me!!

"Zunzhu." Yue Wuhuan lowered his head and mouthed Song Qingshi's neck, breathing in his scent. He moved upward, and his tongue swept over Song Qingshi's sensitive earlobe as though he savored the taste, but he sounded quite pitiful. "I couldn't find you when I woke up. I was so worried."
[...]
"Don't be afraid. I'm here." Song Qingshi pulled the trembling Yue Wuhuan into his arms. Song Qingshi stroked his hair, murmuring over and over, "Don't be afraid. I'll never give up on you..."
Don't be afraid, said the butterfly. Decide what I eat. Take me anywhere. Keep me by your side. I'll do whatever you want.
It saw the spider's web and flew in willingly.

Yeah, well, I never said that their relationship is 100% healthy but they are getting there. Eventually. I hope (?). Nevermind, they make me insane either way. And even if they need to work some more on their relationship skills, it's such a contrast to Bai Zihao's relationship with Jin Feiren. Especially that 'If you love me...' 😭😭 I might sound kind of hypocritical here because I do like toxic love stories to an extent, however, Jin Feiren doesn't have a single redeeming quality and needs to die the sooner the better. And I really hope it's Yue Wuhuan, who gets to kill him because my baby deserves this!

Bai Zihao's heart squeezed like it was in a vise grip. He wasn't sure what he knew anymore - everything inside him had fallen into chaos. [...]
Jin Feiren suppressed the flame poison with the water bead. He carried Bai Zihao to bed and rewarded him the same way he always had - frenzied, violent, painful, pleasurable.
"I love you, I love you the most," he swore, again and again. Bai Zihao stared at the canopy over their bed.
He had never permitted himself to wonder:
If you love me, how can you stand hurting me?
A tear rolled down his cheek and onto the pillow, where it disappeared.

There are too many heartbreaking characters here. I just want for all these poor souls to have happy lives. Which I know is impossible. Maybe there's still some hope fpr Bai Zihao but I know that An Long won't get the HEA he would want. Yes, I was a little undecided about him in the previous vol but he broke my heart in this one. I mean, it's not his fault that he was born and that everyone hates him for it. Of course, I wish that he would stop tormenting Yue Wuhuan, and that he's kind of in a way of huanshi getting together but I'm sure that if he had been the main character, I would be rooting for him. Afterall, if Taxian-Jun could be forgiven, why not An Long.

However, he's not the main character, and Song Qingshi doesn't want to be with him, so at the moment I'm on Qingshi's side, and he's the fourth person in this vol to break my heart 😭💔 can nobody in this book just have a nice life?? He's been lonely and unhappy across two different lifetimes in two different universes, and it's just so tragic what happened between him and An Long.

A flood of tears poured from his eyes, even as he tried to smile.
"What's this?" Song Qingshi wasn't sure why he was crying. He scrubbed his smiling face. "It's okay. I'm not sad at all. Don't worry, please-"
[...]
He would continue to be strong, but at the moment he didn't feel that way.
"Wuhuan, would you let me have some time to cry?"
"Of course. I'll stay with you. I'll always stay with you."
"Wuhuan, aren't I ridiculous?"
"No. And you'll never be."

My poor babies 🥺🥺 They are both so broken but I know that they will evetually get better together. If only everyone would let them be in their nice, happy bubble, just being with each other. And now for the end, of course, I have to mention their first kiss. Usually, I'm way more excited for such things but I can't really say that this was a particulary happy moment.

"Don't kiss me... Y-you have no idea how many disgusting things my lips have touched. I-I'll dirty you."
"Why do you always say that? You're very clean. Not dirty at all."
"Please, Zunzhu, you don't understant any of this. You're the clean one. Don't touch me..."
[...]
"You are very sweet," Song Qingshi said.
Yue Wuhuan gazed at him in silent shock.
"If you think you're dirty, don't worry. I'll lick you clean." The solution seemed simple enough to Song Qingshi. He leaned in for another kiss.

Gods bless Song Qingshi and his pure soul 🥹
I completely understand that Yue Wuhuan has trauma that won't just go away because he's now safe and sound with Song Qingshi, and that he sees everything sexual as dirty, tainted, and maybe even evil but I really hope that he won't totally traumatise Qingshi as well. Because for Song Qingshi everything is new, he only started exploring his sexuality, and he's feeling desire for the first time in probably whole two lifetimes. So in this aspect, these two being together is a huge disaster. But I believe in them ❤️‍🩹❤️‍🩹

I'll just have a little taste. Just a little...
Yue Wuhuan dragged Song Qingshi close and locked him in his arms. There was no room to back away and no chance of escape.
"Zunzhu, that's not how you kiss someone. Let me teach you."
Yue Wuhuan pushed his mouth against Song Qingshi's pale pink lips. He forced his tongue past Song Qingshi's teeth, invading that untouched space. Corrupting it.

I said I believe in them, right? Let's hope all of us will manage to retain at least a little bit of sanity before these two officially become a couple 😅

"Wuhuan," Song Qingshi said, seriously. "Are you my friend, or something else?"
Yue Wuhuan stiffened.
Each word od that simple question punched through the wall around his heart.

We're gonna suffer in the next volume, right?? Can't wait 🤩

BRing with Sam. I love how we're choosing books that totally devastate us 🥰🥰

4.8/5 🌟

This volume offers a perfect balance of cuteness, humor, and angst. It is a prime example of how seemingly "random" or "draggy" situations actually carry immense weight, as the narrative rewards you for paying attention to the small details. Everything—from the Golden Phoenix Manor massacre and Mo Yuan's cave of nightmares to a simple phoenix gem—eventually making sense.

In the previous volume, we focused on Wuhuan’s POV, seeing how his trauma shaped him into a "madman." In contrast, this volume reveals more of Qingshi’s heart and how his actions have shaped those around him.

“I don’t remember what happened then, but once I extracted the bug… I remembered what I felt just before dying. I wasn’t angry or bitter… I think I wanted to die, Wuhuan… Even if he didn’t think of me as a friend, I can’t lie to myself or let him go on pretending. I couldn’t give him what he wanted then, but… I could give him my life because it wasn’t important. No one would mourn me.” 。°(°.◜ᯅ◝°)°。

I thoroughly loved the portrayal of Qingshi’s obliviousness. He is so sweet and delulu that I couldn't help but giggle!
🔹 He seriously thinks his "Angel" is a saint.
🔹 He believes he has to perform all these tasks to make Wuhuan stay, failing to see that Wuhuan is on the verge of losing his mask he puts on every day because he loves Qingshi so much.
🔹 He actually thinks he’s the "manly" and "dark" one of the pair!
🔹 He genuinely believes he can make Wuhuan and An Long be friends; when they pretend to play nice, he thinks his methods are working. It’s freakin' hilarious!

Yet, beneath that cuteness is a vulnerability that broke my heart. Seeing how depressed he has been his entire life was devastating. He does everything to keep his Angel close, never realizing his Angel never wants to leave.
Despite his severe social anxiety, Qingshi’s heart is so pure. He means well and cares for everyone, yet people fear him because of his reputation of being a "cold and evil" person.

This volume solidifies that irony in the silliest ways, but when I realized how utterly lonely Qingshi truly is, I cried my eyes out.

We can’t discuss this review without mentioning An Long. All thanks to Wuhuan who laid in the shadows like a tiger in waiting, we finally got a massive bombshell: An Long is a half-demon—specifically, the one Qingshi saved 800 years ago. An Long became so infatuated that he adjusted his entire personality and lifestyle just to stay by Qingshi’s side (very Hua Cheng-coded! ( ≧ᗜ≦) ).

After befriending Qingshi, he fell in love and confessed, only to... kill him? ∘ ∘ ∘ ( °ヮ° ) ?

Yes! You read that right! ( ˶°ㅁ°) !!

Because Qingshi rejected him due to his "Heartless" cultivation, An Long’s demon side lost control. It wasn't malicious—it was a lash-out of pure emotional instability. If there had been true malice, Qingshi’s Underworld flames would have ignited. But in reality, Qingshi wanted to die. With each passing lonely day and with each lonely encounter in live, like a pool that filled drop by drop, so did his passivity to death became more like yearning.

“Sorry.” Yue Wuhuan gave in. He pulled the crying man into his arms. Song Qingshi’s guttural sobs pierced his very soul... “I shouldn’t have made you sad.”
“You did nothing wrong,” Song Qingshi said in a low voice. “The truth won’t go away just because I don’t want to see it.”

The most beautiful part I think is Wuhuan’s guilt. He isn't happy about failing to kill An Long in the first place, but felt victorious in telling Qingshi the truth; instead, after seeing Qingshi’s pain, it made his own victory of almost killing and getting rid of An Long feel absolutely meaningless.
He realizes An Long was Qingshi’s only friend.

Both An Long and Wuhuan are tormented by inner demons. An Long’s demons tell him he’s a freak and that Qingshi could never care for him. Wuhuan’s demons tell him he is "filthy" and urge him to defile the pure canvas that is Qingshi: the two really aren't that different.

I am so excited to see what happens next. I want An Long to find happiness; he made a mistake, but he means well. I also love that Qingshi is willing to do anything for his Angel—including seeking revenge and killing those who wronged him. He fully accepts Wuhuan’s darkness, proving he isn't as clueless as he seems.

PS: In other happy news... WE GOT A KISS! Things are so convoluted —Qingshi doesn't want to pressure Wuhuan due to his past trauma, and Wuhuan feels too "tainted" for Qingshi— but what seperated Wuhuan with An Long is that he's happy with not changing anything of Qingshi, including his feelings for him. 𐔌՞ ܸ.ˬ.ܸ՞𐦯

WHAT THE HELL THAT WAS SO INSANE!!!

I’ll attempt to make a coherent review, but first of all, don’t ask me why I always get attached to characters that are eternally lonely.

Song Qingshi, we think he’s just this sweet, introverted, kind hearted nerd who absolutely adores Yue Wuhuan, right? No. In this volume we learn that he is also extremely lonely and has been for his whole life. Let me go cry now. I love him, I love his obliviousness, I love the fact that he somehow (?) recognized his feelings and shared them out loud. I love you, Qingshi.

Yue Wuhuan is still an absolute baby (he is murdering people, but still a baby). He spent 10 years to care for his zunzhu, and doesn’t let anyone even try to touch him (cue the rooftop scene). I still feel he has so much potential and am so excited for the next volumes to explore it!

An Long. Okay.

This was a fantastic read, funny, humorous, but also so sad and angsty. I’m immensely excited for the next one 🔥

Buddy read this with Monique 🥰 Can’t wait to fangirl even more!!

“Let’s do everything you like together. We’ll watch clouds, read, experiment, travel, play music, hang out… You’ll never be alone again.”

I had a mixed but ultimately positive experience with this installment. The opening chapters pulled me in right away with the same strange but compelling blend of cultivation and medical research that made the story stand out before. Song Qingshi continues to be a character who is incredibly easy to root for. His brilliance never overshadows his awkward sincerity, and his priorities stay focused on medicine, experiments, and protecting the people close to him. What I like most is how his kindness shows up in small moments instead of dramatic declarations. Yue Wuhuan balances him perfectly. He carries himself with patience and quiet devotion, presenting a calm and dutiful image while clearly hiding much deeper emotions beneath the surface. Their relationship has a constant tension that feels both tender and unsettling. Song Qingshi offers trust without hesitation, while Yue Wuhuan guards that trust with an intensity that can feel almost frightening. An Long also brings a lot of energy into the story with his sharp humor and explosive loyalty, constantly challenging Song Qingshi while throwing himself into danger whenever something feels wrong.

The middle portion was where my feelings became more complicated. A lot of events are technically unfolding, yet it sometimes feels like the story is standing still. The narrative spends time exploring daily routines, teaching, research, and the rebuilding of the medical sect, which gives the setting more depth but also slows the momentum quite a bit. I found myself slightly bored through parts of the middle. The timeskip also didn’t work for me. It interrupted the emotional flow and made certain developments feel distant when they probably should have carried more impact. Some parts also lean heavily into painful themes. There were moments that were honestly so sad that they broke my heart. The story does not shy away from trauma, obsession, and morally uncomfortable devotion, which adds emotional weight but can be difficult to read at times.

What really saved the experience for me was the ending. The last few chapters suddenly shift the entire pace of the book. After so much quiet buildup, the story delivers plot twist after plot twist that completely changes how certain moments and relationships are viewed. Hidden motives begin to surface, tensions sharpen, and the fragile calm surrounding the characters starts to crack. It made me realize how much groundwork the story had been laying earlier. I enjoyed the beginning, struggled a little through the middle, but the final chapters left me craving more and eager to see where the story goes next.

I waited a while and great anticipation to read this volume after the brutal cliffhanger at the end of volume 1. I absolutely loved Volume 1! Could not wait to get volume two!

Volume two did not disappoint, the relationships continue to be amazing and the story interesting and the characters engaging. The problem is that the cliffhanger was so annoyingly offensive to me that I had to mark it down a star. They cut off a conversation in the middle! It doesn't feel like a stopping spot. I feel like someone hit pause on a movie to run to the bathroom and then decided that they weren't going to let you watch the rest anyways. I'm so annoyed!

Despite the fact that I'm annoyed about the cliffhanger and all that, it's still a book series I highly recommend. It's just really hard to recommend when it's not fully published yet... These kind of cliffhanger endings just torture the reader.

This particular volume had some very emotional deep revelations. I actually teared up a bit at the end, which is probably part of the reason why ending mid-conversation bothered me so much.

Now I feel like whining so I'm going to end my review here.

3.25?

While I did enjoy this and I read it quickly, it didn’t really catch me the way I wanted it to. The 10 year skip threw me for a loop and I think it was done.. well-enough? Idk I wish I could have seen Yue Wuhuan actually BE the villain more ya know? We hear it a lot through the story and An Long but I wanted to witness it myself a bit more.

I do like Song Qingshi and his naivety and innocence. Him constantly referring to Yue Wuhuan as his ‘little angel’ is so funny to me. I do think they’re cute together but I can’t acknowledge that their relationship is 100% healthy. Yue Wuhuan is very controlling and possessive and clingy when it comes to Song Qingshi.

I don’t care about what he did, I really like A Long. In fact, it doesn’t add up. I’m suspecting foul play here. He doesn’t even remember doing what he supposedly did. Also, he might even be my favorite character in the series. I like his character design and I like his personality. Him being the master of the Thousand Poison Sect adds to my favoritism. I think bugs are super cool and interesting so maybe it’s a bit biased but I don’t really see a lot of characters using bugs or having a strong connection to them.

Overall this was alright. I did enjoy parts of it and I think there were some really cute bits buuuut I’m gonna take this one off my physical shelves unfortunately.

BIG SPOILERS FOR VOLUMES 3-4

Sadly I’m not sure if I wanna finish the series though. I read up on volumes 3-4 and apparently there is this gigantic time skip in the next volume and from what else I’ve heard, I’m worried An Long won’t have a happy ending or even BE in the story anymore. For that reason alone I’m gonna put this series on the back burner. I’m doing this solely cause I really like A Long and refuse to see him disappear from the story, suffer or get a bad ending.

I did really enjoy the first book; unfortunately, all of my concerns came true in the second. This is 3 stars because the first half was still pretty fun and readable - mostly because it had a good amount of An Long. By the end there just wasn't a whole lot left to like.

Initially, what I'd found refreshing about this series was the strong undercurrent of humor. Song Qingshi scamming the system and rescuing the wrong person was funny and a bit different from the others I've read in this genre. He was kind of making a mess of everything, but in a well-intentioned way, and he managed to save someone who hadn't deserved his horrible fate. Yue Wuhuan was tormented past the point of sanity but Song Qingshi still believes he has a good soul in there that he can rehabilitate in a better, more gentle life.

Except there's a 10 year time skip between books, while Song Qingshi recovers from that tribulation lightning strike that still hardly makes sense. Yue Wuhuan spent that decade reshaping Song Qingshi's valley, training new apprentices (the rescued youths), and traveling the world to find rare cures to save him.

I hadn't thought the series title worked, but it does come to fruition here - maybe Yue Wuhuan wasn't the original villain in this narrative, but averting his death meant unleashing a furious demon upon the world (and apparently he gets way worse in the next couple books).

I use "demon" intentionally there because there's this additional "even half-demons are evil" worldbuilding that I really, really disliked. Yue Wuhuan is human; therefore while his actions may be violent and selfish and intentionally cruel, he's still not as inherently evil as someone who was born of a demon.

I've never particularly liked the interior illustrations, which make Song Qingshi look way younger than he should; I know that even though he's a thousand years old, cultivation freezes aging at a certain point, so his appearance doesn't match his soul and all that. Except he acts like a child, and that annoyed me more and more.

It was funny initially for Song Qingshi to be so clueless. He was doing his best in this strange new world, making blunders because he interpreted situations incorrectly. But his obliviousness becomes irritating in this volume. Constantly calling Yue Wuhuan his "little angel" while he was clearly committing atrocious acts. Not understanding that Yue Wuhuan and An Long despise each other and are fighting over him. Having zero concept at his age of what human sexuality is like. Sure, he cultivated no inner desire, but monks still know sexual desire exists, they just choose not to act on it. Song Qingshi is meant to truly have an empty, pure core so he should be aware of it but not tempted by it.

I also got really tired of Song Qingshi blindly adoring everything Yue Wuhuan did. "You did nothing wrong, my little angel," he says, after discovering that Yue Wuhuan had spent a decade cultivating the kinds of bone-shattering poisons that he'd always seen as too cruel.

And then the whole situation with An Long was just...badly written and upsetting. I loved An Long himself. He was, ironically, the most human and complex character in the story. His futile love for Song Qingshi and his agony over realizing he would never be chosen was so painful and effective.

I hated the twist. And I can't even tell from various spoilers whether he's in the rest of the books? It seems like he kind of just disappears after Yue Wuhuan attacks him and then spills his secrets to Song Qingshi, who again chooses his perfect little angel over the guy who'd been his only friend for hundreds of years.

There is something interesting about Song Qingshi's naivete; it starts to feel near the end like it's actually a shield. He knew something was off with An Long but wanted so badly to have a normal friendship that he ignored it. He knows Yue Wuhuan is increasingly unhinged and creepily possessive of him, but he likes being adored that mindlessly.

This could've been intriguing to watch unfold, but apparently there's a three thousand year time skip in the next book, and I'm just over it. It doesn't sound like anything that happens from this point on will bring back that initial enjoyment from the first volume, so I'm tapping out now.

An Long deserved a better story, that's all.

The only thing that's really holding this back from being a 5 star is just how much is not told to you. They tell you that Yue Wuhuan has done a lot of awful things during the 10 year skip, but they only really tell you two of them. Again, they don't really delve all that deep into his trauma where I feel like they could have done.

But what keeps it so highly rated for me is the developments in the relationships between Yue Wuhuan, An Long and Song Qingshi. The reveal towards the end that .

I do really like this series and I do look forward to where it goes from here now that .

Despite the horrors revealed, I would have enjoyed this going in a toxic throuple direction. Alas, I DON’T think that’s going to happen? The throuple part. The toxic part is VERY much in play—literally, in so many ways. Poison, venom, disease, etc. They REALLY wanted to drive that point home. I got it.

Anyway.

All that is to say that if you enjoy your danmei as unhinged as it is *romantic*, let’s say, you’d probably like this series.

There’s like one character who’s a decent person in this series—and that’s largely because he lost his memory and our MMC transmigrated into this story through him. Everyone else is toeing the line between common decency and straight up psychopathy. Or, using it as a jump rope.

It’s fun—if you’re into to that.

If the first volume was all about healing and learning to feel safe again after experiencing trauma, this book is about traumatizing your enemies BACK—and looking HOT and ethereal while doing it.

Again, it’s a vibe. I don’t hate it. You might not hate it either~

Song Qingshi is a gem. One of my favourite danmei characters of all time.

This had a perfect blend of actually serious characterisation and humanity, but also great humour in the way the characters' foibles interact. It made for a really light-hearted, cosy read, even though some of the backstories and worldbuilding are pretty dark. Yue Wuhuan has one of the most brutal histories I've read, and the story doesn't shy away from that, but somehow it also makes it all seem okay now that he's found Song Qingshi.

There's enough plot to keep the story moving, but it's heavily character focused and full of sweet and funny interactions between the two (maybe three) primary characters.

Absolutely can't wait for the third one to come out.

Aaaaaa. EL REVEAL DE AN LONG. Omg.

I am rarely moved by things.....

But i am moved by these characters' development. The essence of any good yandere is how great the dichotomy between the face they present to their chosen beloved and the face they show the rest of the world. Wuhuan's real face is PARTICULARLY vicious. But not as vicious as his mind.

This story is blessed by having TWO very good hunters after the ML's affection. Unfortunately, it's not really a contest. Wuhuan is an apex predator. A genius, his sharpest blade is his conniving mind and his indescribable PATIENCE. The webs he weaves and traps he sets are flawless. Our poor clueless baby never stood a chance. 🤦🏽‍♀️

These two are fascinating. But I want to make clear. Our ML is often oblivious, but he is neither docile NOR stupid. He can also be cruel. And he can also be scheming, even if he lacks guile.

I, truly, am eager for more of this story.

… where can I start? The stakes? The writing? Firstly, I didn’t say this in my first review but the art in this book is beautiful. The characters in this second volume start shining more for me, and it feels like a greater development. Qingshi has been asleep for 10 years, and now we as the reader try to catch up with what has happened along side him. It’s always a bit risky doing a big time skip, you have to justify it well and not use it as an excuse to develop character off screen; but I think the author has used its placement well. Wuhuan is interesting, and I genuinely like how he has developed; it feels like while he hasn’t gotten worse mentally, he has t improved either. His self loathing and severe dependence on Qingshi is still very present, even more so from the absence from the 10 years. The scientific developments are interesting to read, way more detailed than the first one (in my opinion). An Long, oh where do I begin… the reveal of him being half demon and it slowly building up, could’ve maybe done it a tiny bit better? It feel developed, yes, but something just feel off a bit. Honestly he was my favourite to read in volume two, his slow descent to madness shown through out. The kiss… I’m not sure how to feel about it, I feel like maybe it will be developed in volume 3 (which I am dying for the release) but it just feels… sudden? Which isn’t always bad, but I expected more reactions after the fact. This might be coming, I’ll keep my mind open until I’ve read volume 3. This volume also brought more action, exploration of the outside world and side characters that are sticking to me. The red dragon sect was a fun party to read, their characters feeling fresh when we had been shown mostly high ranking people in volume 1, and the characters they brought was unique. I loved Qingshi trying to find a way to be a better teacher for Wuhuan, and that whole side plot. This was honestly a fun read all round, maybe the story felt a bit undeveloped on certain areas and I felt certain arcs could’ve been spent longer exploring. Like the nightmare sequence, that felt very much rushed in my end: I would’ve liked seeing our characters trying more to figure out what’s happening. It being A Longs nightmare was a suprise, good way, and I think just giving it a bit more time would’ve let it settle better.

Story: 2/5
Characters: 3/5

"He must've collected good karma from three lifetimes to meet such a sweet little angel! Yue Wuhuan was brilliant, beautiful, kind, cute, gentle, and considerate too."

"If Yue Wuhuan wanted to expand his horizons and improve his cultivation, they could travel the world together! He wanted to be Yue Wuhuan's teacher, his friends, his family..."

"Song Qingshi couldn't refuse his little angel. He has to say yes, no matter his own reservations..."

"If you want mountains and seas of death, then that's what I'll give you,"

"I won't let you cry [...] I'll go to festivals with you. We'll go shopping. We'll have adventures. Whatever sounds interesting, we'll do it. [...] Let's do everything you like together. We'll watch clouds, read, experiment, travel, play music, hang out... You'll never be alone again."

"Are you my friend, or something else?"

I don't think this volume met my expectations. I really thought the main conflict would be the character that Song failed to save. So I was surprised that this arc, for it's second half, was really them on vacation. Obviously, they face conflict witch forces them to face their emotions and fears. But I feel like there was a misopportunity here to be really angsty.

I know that the og character dose show up and it seems like the story is setting up for his role. But so far there's been little set ups for other characters. An Long being the prime example. The cliff hanger from book one leading his secret was ok, but it fell short and anti-climatic. Maybe it was rushed. It was a good plot twist, but it could have been developed more. It didn't helped that An Long was missing for the majority of the book. And Song was completely ok with it. Some friend he is. Despite Song wanting a friend, I was disappointed how he treated him. Now, An Long doesn't deserve Song, but it's hard to defend either one of them.

Song himself, I teared up when he expressed his loneliness and how his lack of social skills prevented him from forming friends. How happy he was when he finally found his first friend who understood him. And it kills me that he would give his freedom to Yue if it meant reassuring his mental state. Fortunately, Yue can't stand to see him hurt, that he is willing to give back to Song. It is no longer what Yue wants, but what Song wish he could have.

I am still interested in continuing to read, but I hope the last book cover all the loose plot points.
