“Nine out of ten people like chocolate. The tenth person always lies.”

— John Q. Tullius

Frankly, I jumped to get this ARC, though the page-heaviness initially felt intimidating. But once I began, I didn’t realize when I became completely immersed. With six parts exploring different layers of chocolate, it was truly a deep and enriching journey.

From Aztecs’ source of wisdom or vigor, chocolate became a source of power, scandal and innovation. I learned so much.

"A few hundred cacao beans, it was said, could purchase a turkey or pay a laborer’s wages. "

It was discovered as early as 1750 BCE. Just imagine — the Upper Amazon, those ancient rhythms of adventure, the deep connection with the Mayan fertility goddess, monk scandals in the early 1600s (a passionate object indeed!), the link to obsidian sacrificial blades, the HPLC test discoveries — and so many more fascinating dimensions.

Oh! I loved how consistently the author included chocolate-based recipes from different historical timelines. A sincere thank you for such intensive research.

I adored the legends — the nostalgic yet melancholic connection with the “ancestor orchard,” royal mothers, fasting reinforcements, Aztec herbal texts, and more.

I loved those continuous accidental discoveries like choco chips, filling orosensory experiences, the pragmatic side of "health halo", the packaging model (Perugina’s Baci Kiss), and obligation chocolate in East.

The author consistently reminds us to show gratitude for the chocolate we consume today.

Now the science and agro-science parts!

The detailed discussions of Madre de Cacao, cacao de monte, escoba de bruja, Scavina 6 (SCA-6), IPCC deficiency warnings, agroforestry systems, West African child labor challenges, the dual-crop model, and the Bouba–Kiki effect were incredibly informative.

I also learned about chocolate whisperer and two unique tastes, Kokumi & Umami.

Finally, my deepest gratefulness to F. J. Pound for identifying high-yielding, disease-resistant cacao trees.

P.S. Every chocolate lover must read this book. Do not skim it — relish it like a finely flavored piece of chocolate.

If you want to know anything about chocolate this is the book for you. It gives you the history from 4000 years ago to today. It was used in rituals, used as money and as medicine. The book is a fascinating read about all aspects of cacao. The book goes into the future of cacao by making it in a lab. I would like to thank Josh Lee for an free copy to review.
