Something is waking up inside my best friend, and I've got its attention.

A voice jolts me awake. My corn muffin tastes like blueberry. My best friend’s eyes, brown for as long as I’ve known her, have turned a brilliant violet.

All I wanted was a boring, ordinary life, and to enjoy a smoothie with my best friend, Lillia. Then a transport crashes into my life and obliterates any sense of normalcy.

We survive, but Lillia whispers about a voice in her head, and as she falls unconscious in my arms, I notice her eyes have become a dull violet.

At the hospital, after Lillia is admitted, I close my eyes for just a moment. When I open them, patients are tearing into one another, and a gray-skinned woman is emptying her pistol into the infected crowd.

Then I see a little girl with eyes similar to Lillia’s standing among them. She points at me, and the horde freezes before turning to face me.

The gray-skinned woman grabs my hand, and we run as the horde surges forward.

Behind the little girl, I glimpse a regally dressed woman glaring at me as if my existence offends her.

As my savior pulls me around the corner, all I can think is…

Who was that woman, and why did she look like Lillia with silver hair?
