[5 Stars🤩] Lena, Lena, Lena....what an incredibly special book you've written. Sometimes, when it comes to books, you know when you have something beautiful in your hands and you don't want it to end, and When We Fall was one of those books for me. The storytelling was delicate, the character development was nuanced, the romance was impeccable, and the tension, angst, and pining was my undoing.
When We Fall is the kind of book that quietly devastates you and heals you in the same moment. It resonates and doesn't let go, and I don't think I'll move on from this book anytime soon. It will go down not only as a top read in 2025, but as a top read in recent memory. Not only was this book relatable, there were so many beautifully heartbreaking moments that helped me remember that I have the chance to live in the "extraordinary ordinary." And as someone who feels like they have to keep it all together sometimes, especially as a mom, it's easy to lose sight of the ache of ordinary love.
Austin was the shining definition of "if he wanted to, he would." He was masculine yet tender, sweet and generous, kind, funny, and so wonderfully thoughtful. He was a perfect counterpoint for Selene, and I loved his relationship with Winnie. I was emotional a lot throughout When We Fall over Austin always showing up for Selene and Winnie, and how he created a silent support system for them with no desire for recognition. He simply cared for them even when they didn't recognize it in that moment.
Selene was a deeply relatable character, and there were so many moments during her chapters that felt validating not only as a woman, but as a mom--especially when her internal monologue talked about the kind of mom she wanted to be for Winnie. The way she felt like she had to be and do everything, and how it was difficult to let someone step in to help. Her character growth and journey of self-realization was devastatingly beautiful, and it's one I won't soon forget.
The tension, the angst, and the yearning--THE YEARNINGGGGGGG--between Selene and Austin was beautifully portrayed and written, and the intimacy was off the charts, and the "will they/won't they" made my chest ache in the BEST way. There were no gratuitous spicy scenes in When We Fall, which made the scenes even more special. It truly felt like it was advancing the plot without trying too hard.
To be honest, I'm sad that I'll never get to read this book for the first time ever again--it's THAT good! Lena was at her best when she wrote this, and I hope we get another special dynamic between Wes and Clara when we get to come back to Star Harbor!
+Thank you to Lena Hendrix for the ARC of When We Fall! All thoughts in this review are my own.
