Female Indigenous Heroes is a wonderful testament to the contributions of the 51 individuals featured. Each short biography is written in very accessible language not only for its target age group, but honestly, for any student. While I was familiar with a handful of the figures discussed, I was not aware of the others. Indeed, it seems Dr. Phillips expanded upon the minute inclusion of Indigenous people in the typical K-12 curriculum in such a vast manner. The representation of native nations was incredibly diverse too. Thus, it would behoove every teacher to incorporate Dr. Phillips’s work into the curriculum, for it would provide students with a more comprehensive understanding of the people who have helped bring attention to the Indigenous nations.

Again, as I mentioned in a previous review of Female Heroes of Greek Mythology, I wish this series were accompanied by reflection activities, comprehension questions, and interactive content (especially from the figures who are still alive). These resources would allow the reader the opportunity to commit the names and facts in a more palatable way.

Female Indigenous Heroes was a fantastic read, and as with its counterparts, included beautiful illustrations that were so vibrant, it was if they leapt off the page.

Thank you very much to Callisto Publishing and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this ARC!

(Note: I read this through an ARC, but this review is entirely my own opinion)
This is such a great, introductory text to American (and a few Canadian) female, Indigenous heroes. I liked the language used throughout the book as it was easy to comprehend and understand, even for younger readers. I appreciated how the format remained consistent the entire time: illustration, name, where they are from, what their impact was/is, a quote, and a place to get more information.
This was very simple in the essence that you probably wouldn’t be using this for any research, but it’s a great place to start because you get a general overview of each character.
As a Canadian myself, I still enjoyed reading about the Americans, however, if a secondary piece were to be published I would love to see a version be focused on Canadians!
My other suggestion would be to include a pronunciation guide (or pronunciation in brackets) of the places they were born or lived. The glossary at the end was phenomenal!
In summary, this is a perfect read to get the thoughts rolling on Indigenous heroes for people of all ages, it will leave you wanting to learn more about those mentioned.

Thank you so much to Callisto Kids and Netgalley for the ebook to read and review.

What an amazing book turn of inspiring and wonderful women showcased within this book. I was in awe and amazed at these women and all they have done, the achievements they made and the ways they helped with their communities and their people.

So many of these woman found a way to make a voice for themselves and ensure they were heard so that they could better help those that really needed them. They brought about change that was so needed and the care that was important and needed. Others became heavily educated that they could help their people, some were incredible athletes and some went to war or helped with the war effort.

I had such an amazing time reading this book and learning all about these absolutely incredible women. I highly recommend this book it will give you so many new inspiring women to learn about, you’ll get a glimpse at all they’ve achieved in their lives. It’s perfect to incorporate into education and it’s just in general an amazing and worthwhile read.
