Dead Channel: A Supernatural Slayers Novel - A New Addition to the Apocalyptic Horrors Universe

Rate this book
Some memories should stay buried.October, 2000.

Fifteen years ago, Springfield Mall became ground zero for the demon Abaddon’s massacre. Hundreds died. The survivors barely escaped with their souls. The mall has been sealed ever since—until now.

When a reckless ghost hunting TV crew sneaks inside to film a live special, their broadcast awakens something a creature fused from demonic residue, psychic trauma, and the dying echoes of every voice Abaddon consumed.
When the feed goes dark, the Paranormal Protection Agency calls in the only team experienced enough—and damaged enough—to go back Bella Morris, her ghost-bound soulmate Ricky Gibson, and the Mantis Brothers Paranormal Extermination crew.

What they find in the ruins isn’t a haunting. It’s a resurrection.

The Broadcast Entity is evolving.
It’s hungry.
It needs to feed.
And it wants to finish what Abaddon started—create Hell on Earth.

To save the trapped ghost hunters—and themselves—Bella’s team must survive revisiting the mall that killed her mother, confront shades of their pasts, and shut down the Dead Channel permanently, before it can spread beyond the mall’s security walls.

Because fear has a frequency.
And now it’s transmitting.

While this is book 2 of the Supernatural Slayers series and includes characters from book 1, Slasher Cruise, as well as the full Apocalyptic Horrors universe, it can be read without reading any of the previous books.

However, readers who have already read the Mall Priest Trilogy, It Came From The Pumpkin Patch, and It Came From The Flower Shop Down Under will especially enjoy this story.Dead Channel concludes in Dead Echo, available October 2026.

Although working as a baker for many years, writing has been a passion for Chris for some time, starting in high school and reigniting again in 2006, when he first got the inspiration to begin writing 'The Man In Black.'
After completing that project eight years later, he took part in NaNoWriMo in November 2014, culminating into a project named 5PM. Deciding to self-publish, 5PM came out in February 2015, and then The Man In Black in August.
2016 saw the release of 7PM, and in that same year, his writing path met with that of Canadian author Kate Reedwood. A mutual respect of each other's work ignited an interest in working together, creating the Legacy Hunter series, the first of which to come out in July 2017.
Apart from writing, Chris enjoys travelling, reading, watching movies and all things geeky. He resides in Coffs Harbour with his wife and three children.
Chris will be at Nexus Con on July 29 celebrating the release of the first book in his Legacy Hunter series.

Ghostbusters meets Grave Encounters - so much action and so many twists in this fast-paced, supernatural survival horror book! The cast is huge, the plot intricate beyond belief, the horror palpable from page one - and the tension doesn't let up at any moment, the complexity adding up, almost like playing a wildly imaginative horror game! It starts with the crew of a paranormal show, it passes to a team of paranormal investigators, and then everything's up for grabs: ghosts, demons, wraiths, hybrids, psychics, spirits, monsters, all drawn to a haunted mall abandoned since the late 1980s, when disaster struck and the place closed down.

If you've read the authors' previous books set in the same universe as "Dead Channel," you're in for a thrilling ride, straight into one of their most well-crafted stories: you're guaranteed a bloody good time, as the author's don't hold back at any moment, eagerly throwing their characters into the direst situations, with no expectations of survival at all.

"Dead Channel" delivers an intense, visceral narrative of supernatural horror, perfect for anyone who loves complex teamwork stories, full of vivid struggles against larger-than-life sinister foes!

Dead Channel is the second book in the Supernatural Slayers series by Chris Heinicke and Kate Reedwood, and it was a nail biting, wild ride!

If you’ve read the other horror books by this pair, then you will love this book, because we are reunited with characters from the Mall Priest series, It Came From the Pumpkin Patch, and It Came From the Flower Shop Down Under. That said, I don’t think it’s necessary to have read those previous books to enjoy this one, it’s just a bit of an added bonus for those who have.

This book gave me anxiety for my favourite characters. So much so that I had to set it aside for a few days, I couldn’t take the stress. These authors certainly know how to dial up the tension by putting their characters into situations that seem impossible to escape. And to make things worse, they are not averse to killing off a favourite character, so you just never know what will happen.

Dead Channel had the same retro feel as the other books this pair has written, and although it’s not super dark, I found it slightly more serious and less comedic than their previous books, but still just as enjoyable.

While the book doesn’t end on a cliffhanger, it does set up for the next book in the series, and I can hardly wait. If you love horror with a retro feel, I think you’ll love Dead Channel. And if you haven’t read the other books by these authors, you are missing out!

The 7th book on the apocalypse horror universe and boy was it a good one! If you have read any of the others then you in for a treat. A lot of names and events come crawling back up from the depth of hell in this paranormal horror survival story. The book dealt a lot with grief and past traumas which played nice into everything that was going on. The characters felt the same even know most have aged which was nice to see. Familiar faces are always a welcome sight to see. At times the stakes felt too great even for the great Agent Mercury. Will they survive? You’ll have to read to figure it out!

If you’re a fan of abandon malls, paranormal entities, demons, nightmares and groupie ghosts. This might just be the book for you. Great old school horror feel with a lot going on but, not enough to get lost in the jumble. The book felt very thought out and fun. A lot of deep moments. Heart breaking at times, Anxiety filled at others. The only thing I will say is to get the full experience that the book offers I think that you should read a few of the books before hand. Primarily; the first mall priest, it came from the flower shop, pumpkin patch and slasher cruise. The book can be read without them but too many good Easter eggs to miss.

P.S. so worth it to pick up the physical edition. Kate has put some amazing Polaroid artwork in the book.

I do love this series overall. Everything from the Mall Priest trilogy, to 'It Came From the Pumpkin Patch,' and now the 'Supernatural Slayers.' I still need to read 'It Came From the Flower Shop Down Under,' but that's next on my list. Anyway, this time, Bella and Ricky have to return to where they first met, the Springfield Mall, in order to rescue a group of ghost hunters who are trapped by the residual essence left by Abaddon, the original demon who murdered everyone back in 1985. I saw a review say that this was a cross between Grave Encounters and Ghostbusters, and that does feel right. This book didn't have quite as many laughs as the others in the overall universe of novels did, but this one had a lot more emotional moments in it, so I get it. I'm already dying to read the third coming soon in October! If you like 80's horror at all, definitely pick up these books (and start with Mall Priest, as while you can get through these without going in order, everything makes SO much more sense if you do).

I recently finished reading "Dead Channel" by Chris Heineke and Kate Reedwood, and I am still reeling from the experience. The emotional depth and storytelling were so immersive that I felt as though I was right there with the characters. Finishing the final page left me with one of the biggest "book hangovers" I’ve ever had.

The authors excel at creating a sense of pure horror, particularly in their depiction of a world where demons can terrorize individuals by using their own past experiences and thoughts. Despite the intensity, the book is fast-paced, comical, and heartwarming at times. It was also wonderful to see characters from previous stories reappear; I especially hope to see more of "Little Ricky" and his talents in the future.

I highly recommend "Dead Channel" and its associated books to anyone looking for an entertaining, absorbing read that makes you completely lose track of time.

I received a ARC of this book for an honest review.

I absolutely loved every moment of this gripping story and especially all the connections made with It came from the pumpkin patch and It came from the flower shop down under, other two amazing stories written by this dinamic duo. Also, loved meeting the Mall Priest again and seeing him into action. Bringing together all the beloved characters into a story of courage, sacrifice and love conquers all, with demons and a little bit of something else on top, makes this story one strong competitor for my top 10 of 2026!

Ok this one was so much fun. How all the characters from different series all come together is so well done. What else is really good is that they have good pacing and some really good humour sprinkled throughout. I will admit I have changed my opinion on one the characters. I really didn't care for him in the mall priest series and I didn't even twig that he was in the "It Came From..." series. It was great to see a more human side to him. But now I'm itching to know what happens next. I just can't get enough of these books.

This was an excellent continuation to the series. The story moves at a good pace and builds up tension throughout.

Many people don’t know this, but I have a shrine in-progress for Kate Reedwood and Chris Heinicke. I’ve also purchased all of their special editions. They’re insta-buy authors, no need to read a synopsis before picking up their work. It Came From the Flower Shop Down Under marked the beginning of my journey with their writing. They blend chaos, emotional depth, monsters, and horror beautifully. Dead Channel is no exception--the cast of characters and dangers around every corner in this book is immense. Dead Channel was one of those “just one more chapter,” books. Super engaging!

This installment feels broader in scope and more emotionally weighted, while still delivering the intense paranormal elements. The pacing is relentless. Sometime fast-paced horror loses that emotional core, but Dead Channel doesn’t. The characters are not merely confronting external horrors, they're grappling with their histories, their grief, and their guilt, which adds significant depth to the narrative. They strike a good balance between high-intensity scenes and quieter, reflective moments.

I am already looking forward to their next release!

Mall

A paranormal team is filming in the off-limits Springfield Mall. No one is supposed to have access it has been closed since Abbadon escaped many years ago. Bella and her team go to rescue them. Who will rescue everyone. The mall contains an entity determined to escape its containment. Characters you love creepy situations. Heart-wrenching situations.
