From the mad scientists at Chapo Trap House comes....YEAR ZERO #1
Featuring 5 all-new stories from Amber A'Lee Frost, Chris Wade, Will Menaker, Felix Beiderman, and Matt Christman, Year Zero is the first of three oversized books. Five Scintillating Tales of Madness, crossing time, genres, and good taste. With art from comics superstars Simon Roy, Justin Greenwood, David Cousens, Ken Knudtsen, and Dean Kotz, this is an anthology book is like no other!
I'm a regular Chapo listener and generally like their commentary on art (particularly movies), so I figured I'd give this a try. I'm glad I did! These five tales span a number of genres, from Matt Christman's fictionalized account of an episode in the Spanish Civil War to Felix Biederman's wild sci-fi crime thriller featuring his favorite kind of guy- a complete blowhard idiot.
This is a good anthology where all of the stories range from good to great. My only issue with this collection is that almost all of them barely feel like a prologue to their respective stories. While I plan to buy the next two, I feel like this one barely gets you started for each story. However, I imagine I will probably really like the next two volumes, and that might eventually give me retroactive appreciation for this one.
Otherwise though, yeah, this is a fun, interesting, and well-crafted set of stories. Like I already said, I'll definitely continue following this anthology.
Despite being devastated to discover that these stories are just the first acts to be continued in another volume I really enjoyed them. I figured "The Clinton Hill Horror" would be a standout based on my own personal tastes (and it was!) I was surprised to find "Beat the Dang Devil" just as compelling and loved that it ended with a cliffhanger moment. How long until volume 2?!?
I'm not usually a comics book kind a guy, but Ill buy anything with the Chapo Trap House name on it. These stories are fun, but I wish there was more. I think Will's is the best. can't wait for the rest!
