Melodies of the Damned

Rate this book
A MONSTER FORGED BY THE GODS TO KILL HER. A PRINCESS WHO ISN'T AFRAID TO DIE. DESIRE WAS NEVER PART OF THE PROPHERCY... AND IT WILL DESTROY THEM BOTH.

Princess Lyra Meridian would do anything to be free, even if it promised death.
The sacrificial rite of Ascension is her only chance to escape. A ruthless offering to estranged gods where mortals either die or rise as their soldiers. She expected to die. Instead, when she leaped into the cursed ocean... It recognised her and something ancient awakened.

Now monsters crawl from the Hells to hunt her and her kingdoms nightmare, The Commander of Death, is the first to find her. Forced into a blood bargain, Lyra is his prisoner. But the Commander has motives far darker than she realised, and none of them involve letting her go.

As monsters close in and prophecy coils tighter around her throat, Lyra must decide whether the Commander is her captor, her protector... Or the temptation that will damn them both.

Thanks to Nakita Kirwan for providing the eARC. This is my honest opinion.

A Melody That Haunts

Some books are meant to be read. Others are meant to be felt. ‘Melodies of the Damned’ firmly belongs to the second category.

From the very first page, Nakita Kirwan pulls the reader into a dark, hauntingly beautiful world that refuses to let go. The atmosphere is intense and heavy with emotion, steeped in shadows and moral ambiguity. This is fantasy that dares to be uncomfortable, where every choice carries weight and nothing comes without consequence.

Kirwan’s writing style is immersive and evocative, with a rhythm that feels almost musical. Each chapter ends with the irresistible urge to keep going, making it dangerously easy to lose track of time. The pacing is well balanced, allowing space for worldbuilding and emotional depth without ever stalling the story. Everything feels intentional, from the slow unveiling of the world to the carefully constructed tension.

What truly elevates this book are the characters. They are layered, flawed, and deeply human despite the fantastical setting. Morally grey, emotionally scarred, and compelling in their complexity. The relationships crackle with tension, and the romantic elements are woven seamlessly into the plot. Rather than softening the darkness, they intensify it, adding emotional stakes that cut even deeper.

‘Melodies of the Damned’ is dark, gripping, and emotionally powerful. It lingers long after the final page, echoing like a song you cannot quite forget. A stunning start that promises so much more to come.

Highly recommended for readers who love dark fantasy, romantasy, and stories that are unafraid to explore the shadows.

ARC review

Wow, this book was truly amazing. I’ve had to give it 6 stars because 5 stars just wasn’t enough. THE ENDING?! I GASPED. My heart was racing after finishing this book😅 I genuinely loved every single second of this book, the twists, turns, the slow burn and the characters? Just perfection!

The Commander? Yes, yes please. The tension, yearning and brooding? Perfection.

Riven had me laughing out loud so many times throughout this book.

Lyra was an incredible FMC. Such a strong character and the growth was 👌🏻 loved the way she just couldn’t stop herself from saying anything!

Everyone needs to read this book!

Holy wow, I am SHOOK. Everything about this was amazing. It was fast paced. It was twisty and dark and I truly had no idea what was what, and who was who. It had several of my favorite troped all packaged up into a beautiful box. The Commander was another perfect representation of “shadow daddy”, and I absolutely LOVED Lyra. I seriously cannot wait for the next one, this was wonderful!!

A friend lent me A Monster Forged by the Gods to Kill Her, and...
I was hooked from the first page.

Princess Lyra’s fight for freedom, the dark prophecy, and the terrifying Commander of Death make it impossible to put down.

The story is fast-paced, intense, and full of twists that keep you thinking long after you turn the page.

A thrilling, dark fantasy that pulls you in and won’t let go.

Yeap, a five-star read!

Holy fucking shit.

This ARC read blew me away. The ending had my emotions all over the place. That Cliffhanger? *Chefs Kiss* If From Blood and Ash and Quicksilver had a baby, it would be this book.

This book is action packed, sexy, and full of secrets, lies and betrayal. It is most definitely going to be a best seller one day. It has everything we love in a fantasy book. Fae warriors, a shadow daddy, monsters, gods and goddess.

This is a dark fantasy read with so much more to come. I recommend this to any Dark fantasy/Fantasy reader. Pick this book up as soon as its published. I promise you won't be disappointed.

I feel so lucky, this story was an experience. Thank you to the author, Nakita Kirwan and Hawthorne and Aster for the opportunity to read this debut as an ARC. The following review is written and posted of my own volition.

Sultry and seductive. It sang and I am now enthralled by its pages. Captured by Lyra's melody.

She is simply tragic, and I loved her instantly for it. Trapped and tortured, yet paraded around as a princess. A charade. A caged animal ready to drown for her sorrows. Except fate has bigger plans and it won't take Lyra giving up as the answer.

Of course it's a broken one that I am called to. On their last hope, lashing out. Consequences thrown out to sea.

In seeking death, Lyra finds power, and acceptance. Fate takes over and she must shift through the pieces to make sense of it.

This, I very much enjoyed, the story had so much to it that when I thought I figured out one aspect, another piece would be placed and throw a kink in my sleuthing. It provided a challenge, twists on familiar elements that had me doubting myself and worrying for Lyra.

The story fed the darkness, challenging my spirit, evoking a sense of giddy adventure that added up to a story that was everything and more of what I look for. It was wonderfully delightful and will most definitely be one I talk about for a while.

Before I start my review I just need to give a huge shout out to Nakita Kirwan and Hawthorn and Astor for this opportunity

This book is destined to be a BEST SELLER!!!

I absolutely inhaled Melodies of the Damned and I am desperate for Book 2!

This story is dark, lyrical, and utterly immersive. The world-building is rich and haunting, layered with gods, monsters, prophecy, and dangerous magic that feels ancient and alive. The writing is so vivid it pulls you under and refuses to let you resurface. I finished it in less than a day!

Our FMC Lyra is beautifully fractured yet fiercely resilient. Watching her awaken to her power, even as everything hunts her, is both heartbreaking and empowering. And the MMC? The Commander of Death himself. Dark, brooding, morally grey perfection. Protective, possessive, and dripping with 'MINE' energy 💀🔥
Enemies to lovers. Loathing to fate-bound. Blood bargains, court politics, and a devastating 'who did this to you?' moment that absolutely wrecked me. The side characters shine just as brightly, each adding depth and tension rather than fading into the background

Just when you think you know who to trust… everything unravels.

And that ending? A brutal cliffhanger that left me stunned and desperate for more. This book is unforgettable, and I have no doubt it’s destined to be a bestseller.

GOD TIER READ

She crashes a holy ritual, dives into the ocean, and dares the gods to either save her… or end her.
Instead? She survives and lands in brutal military initiation trials.

Add magic, fae, sirens, reincarnation, hidden identities, and fated mates.

Beautiful world, big feelings.

My only complaint is there was just TOO many things happening, like save some tropes for book 2.

If you are looking for a dark fantasy romantasy that will swallow you whole, Melodies of the Damned is your next obsession. From the very first page, the atmosphere is incredibly intense and the world-building is so immersive you can practically feel the shadows closing in.

At the heart of it all is Lyra, a heroine who is the definition of resilient. After a lifetime of being told to hide her true self, she finally snaps and rebels against her father’s wishes right out of the gate—a move that sets a high-stakes tone for her entire journey. Watching her discover her unique magic and realize exactly what she is capable of was easily one of my favorite parts of the story.
Then, there is the romance.

This is Enemies to Lovers done to perfection. The Commander of Death is the ultimate brooding shadow daddy... and he’s shirtless for approximately 90% of the book, which I am definitely not complaining about. 🥵 The yearning and top-notch banter kept me on the edge of my seat, and the slow burn? It was a literal forest fire.

The side characters really made this world feel alive, and Solas is an absolute gem who added so much heart to the found family dynamic.

But be warned: the plot twists are masterfully done, and the betrayal in this book hurt. The author knows exactly how to twist the knife, and that cliffhanger is the definition of "cliffhangery." I’m still screaming!

Melodies of the Damned by Nakita Kirwan is a dark, emotionally charged romantasy that fully pulled me into its intense world and morally complex character dynamics.

This story explores power, survival, and emotional conflict in a way that feels raw and immersive. The central relationship is layered with tension, mistrust, and a dangerous pull that keeps you constantly invested. Rather than romanticizing the darkness, the narrative leans into the heavy emotional stakes, allowing the characters’ struggles, trauma, and growth to feel authentic and impactful.

I especially appreciated the morally grey character arcs and the steady build of tension throughout the plot. Every choice feels consequential, and the emotional weight lingers long after each chapter. The pacing balances character depth and plot progression beautifully, making it difficult to put down.

I had the privilege of reading this as an ARC, and I’m incredibly grateful to the author Nakita Kirwan and publisher Hawthorn & Aster for the opportunity to experience this story early for an honest review in return. It was a compelling, intense, and unforgettable read that left a lasting impression.

THIS!! This right here?! This is it 👏🏽
An amazing debut that left me speechless. Every damn time I thought I figured it out, she’d pull the rug right out of my feet without mercy.

•shadow daddy
•forced proximity
•captor/captive
•unhinged FMC
•morally grey
•fated mates

Lyra escapes one prison only to land in another, except this one is dressed up like salvation 😮‍💨 The adrenaline? Unmatched. Between being hunted by monsters, getting tangled in a prophecy she barely understands, and the MMC who’s watching her like she’s both the key and the curse that had me craving more. Tell me why I was absolutely feral for every interaction.
And that slow burn?? I was on edge the entire time. But the moment he loosens her chains with one hand while binding her to him with the other..oowee I was DONE. A certified goner.

Thank you Nakita and Hawthorn & Aster for the eARC!
I’m applauding you loud and proud 🙌🏽

I read through Melodies of the Damned in 2 days and ran to order a copy when I finished, It. Is. That. Good.

If you have not read this book, YOU NEED TO!<——It’s available now on Kindle Unlimited 👀

Perfect for readers who enjoy:

🩸 Unhinged FMC

🌑 Shadow Daddy

⚖️ Morally Grey Characters

🧵 Fated Mates

⛓️ Forced Proximity

🗝️ Captor Romance

🔥 Slow Burn to ON FIRE Spice

⚔️ Enemies to Lovers

Princess Lyra is completely unhinged and I am here for it! She is strong, unforgettable, and watching this character bloom into her confidence was everything I didn’t know I needed.

The commander , listennnn y’all- if you need your shadow daddy fix come 👏and👏get👏it👏👏👏. He is every bit demanding, commanding, and dropping with spice.

Riven is the dark unhinged comedian that leaves you every bit emotionally scared. That boy has done some serious emotional damage to me and I need more.

Nakita, thank you so much for writing this book and allowing me to be part of your ARC team! I need more I’m begging you 😫

Melodies of the Damned was such a great read.

The pacing of the story was superb. I felt the need to keep reading, getting that "just one more chapter" feeling. MOTD follows Lyra, an abused princess, through a journey of discovery and self-worth. The portrayal of overcoming trauma and feminine rage was divine. Nikita continued to show that just because healing has occurred, trauma is still real and can manifest when confronting the past. The twists and turns were not wholly unexpected but were just surprising enough to keep me on the edge of my seat. Thankfully, the Lyra's story doesn't end with this book - I'm excited that there's more to come for her!

Shout out to Hawthorne & Aster PR Services for setting up the ARC opportunity!

I highly recommend this dark fantasy in which we see FMC Princess Lyra having lived her life trying not to be seen but obey all her father’s commands. She suffered madness and cruel punishment, which led her to wanting to end her life. She was finally brave enough to join the annual Ascension in which mortals sacrificed their souls to the Gods. Instead of dying, she drowned in the sea and came out the other side a different and more powerful woman. This story is the 1st book in a duet, in which we get to see Lyra grow her power, confidence, find her bonded mate and try to save the mortal and fae realms. The ending may shock many, but it was needed. I look forward to book 2!

(4.5) I loved the opening of this story and how the writing flowed like its own melody. Lyra is a storm waiting to be unleashed and I am always here for that energy!

The pacing did not falter one step after the opening, with all the pivotal moments blending in together and building off on one another. This kept me interested and involved through the whole story!

The story has every romantasy element that I eat up from the genre and written in so well! Yes, we have that heart stopping cliff hanger but it was flawless and so in line with the backstory and build up so you know I can't wait for Book 2!

✨️ ARC Read ✨️

Thank you Namita Kirwan for allowing me to advance read your amazing book and giving me my new obsession

I have never—and I mean NEVER—had a book completely consume me like this. It shattered my expectations in the best possible way. I didn’t want to put it down for even a second, and the moment I finished, all I wanted was to start it again. AND IT’S A DEBUT?! Immediate, no-questions-asked auto-buy author from here on out.

This is a dark, action-packed romantasy with high stakes, morally gray characters, and intense emotions that do not let up.

I’m staying intentionally vague because going in mostly blind was the best decision I could’ve made, and I don’t want to take that experience away from anyone. Just know this: if infinite stars were an option, this book would have them.

The FMC is unbelievably strong—after everything she’s endured, she never loses her humanity, never breaks, never bows. Head held high the entire time. And the MMC? A force of nature from start to finish. The ultimate shadow daddy.

The found family? Present and perfect.
The action? Relentless—this book throws you straight into it and never slows down.
The pacing? Not a single dull moment.

I was on the edge of my seat the entire ride, heart racing, emotions wrecked, fully unwell.

Tropes include:
• Enemies to Lovers
• Shadow Daddy
• Forced Proximity
• Arranged Marriage
• Curses
• Only One Bed
• “Who did this to you?”
• Fated Mates
• Trauma
• He Would die for Her

If you love powerful FMCs, obsessive devotion, found family, and nonstop romantasy chaos, this book is absolutely for you. Please check content warnings—this story does not pull its punches.

I could keep going—but I won’t. Do yourself the ultimate favor and get your hands on this book. On 2/14, The Commander of Death is calling your name this Valentine’s Day.

Are you answering the call? 🖤🔥

this was so good ! from the very start, it had my attention, kept me captivated.
the writing and the pace of things truly pulled me in , and just makes you want to keep reading. there was a slowish part around the middle for me, though, but nothing major and easily overlooked with the overall plot and writing that Nakita kirwan had set , locked, and loaded.
AND WITH THAT ENDING !!!??? she easily shot me down.

I will be picking up that second book.

very honoured to have been an arc reader for this book.

This book started off strong, and I was genuinely interested in where the story was going. Unfortunately, as it progressed, it became boring.
Lyra’s character initially seemed intriguing, gradually turned frustrating and idiot. She pretends to be strong but she is annoyingly naive. Honestly, she was so blind for the truth.
The plot also became boringly predictable.
It was a pretty “meh” read for me.

"Tonight is Ascension night, and I will change my fate, or I will die trying."

Lyras always known she was different since the moment she touched the Dead Sea at the age of 12 & lived. For years shes been punished & kept hidden, pushing down the darkness within to be the princess her father needs to unite the nation. But the darkness can only be caged for so long & when a leap of faith lands her with The Commander of Death, what will happen if she chooses to finally set it free?

"I was forged by the Gods to kill her. But she was the only thing in this world I wanted. I would destroy everything to keep her. But I am bound to this curse, and I am not a hero. I am her monster."

Review -

Wow what a debut book! I was hooked from the dedication (swipe to see ➡️) & once the story started I was sucked into this beautifully dark, magic & emotional tale. The worldbuilding was perfectly indepth whilst complementing, yet never overshadowing the storyline itself - it was so good that I literally felt like I was just walking through the story next to FMC Lyra ✨️ pure magic!

The characters, their development and background stories were SO well thought out and developed - the interconnecting stories and twists were incredible & the shock factor to them was real! Hold onto your seats for this ride because I just didn't see some of it coming 🤯

Lyra as an FMC felt soft, almost breakable ... yet fuelled by rage and hatred - a woman pushed to the brink & craving death to escape. Harsh edges and hard lines with a past to haunt her & a darkness buried deep 🖤

MMC The Commander of Death - literally commanded attention from the moment he hit the page! His outer broody, harsh, blunt almost cruel exterior pushed you away ... but you just couldnt help be drawn in by glimpses of softness & intrigued by his secrets 💀

The found family element in sideline characters Riven, Cerilla & Solas made for a good deal of sarcasm and deepened the emotional connections ... however the twists & turns took me OUT! And the ending ... mind BLOWN 🤯 Nikita how could you leave us like that 🫠 I need the next book like NOW!! 🖤
