What order should I read the books in? A. I purposefully wrote the books so they could be read as standalones, but honestly, you will get more from the books if you read them in order because that way the back story lends depth and poignancy to many moments in future books. Here is the Blessed are the Dead (An Anthony and Macavity award finalist for best first mystery)  Blessed are the Meek Blessed are Those Who Weep (A Barry Award finalist in the best mystery category) Blessed are Those Who Mourn Blessed are the Peacemakers Blessed are the Merciful Q. Why should I give your series a shot? A. I've been lucky enough to receive critical acclaim from several different important communities in the mystery world. For me, the highlight of my mystery career so far was when my favorite author, New York Time bestselling writer, Lisa Unger, agreed to read my book, and then said she liked it. It was a dream come true. Q. Gabriella Giovanni is an Italian-American newspaper report who lives in the Bay Area. So were you. How much of Giovanni is you? A. I've heard this a bajillion Isn't Gabriella you? And so, at one point, early on in the series, I took a personality test and answered as me and then took it again as GG. Turns out we are polar opposites. I like to say she's my alter ego, who I would've been in another life. While I was a stay-at-home mom wrangling two rowdy toddlers in my pajamas in negative thirty weather in Minnesota, I could pretend I was this super cool chic eating cannoli and drinking a latte in North Beach, San Francisco. Q. How would you describe the types of mysteries you write? A. All my books featuring strong, fierce, and independent women facing unspeakable evil in order to seek justice for those unable to do so themselves. In addition, although my books often deal with dark and disturbing themes, I truly believe that readers finish my books with a sense of hope and the certainty that even in the darkest days there are beautiful moments where people act with grace and dignity and love for their fellow man. Blessed are Those Who Weep by Kristi Belcamino is a 2015 Witness Impulse publication. I was provided a copy of this book by the publisher and Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review.

Wow! This series is just getting deeper and better as it goes along. The story starts off with a shocking murder scene which sends the already fragile Gabriella into a tailspin.

When we last touched base with crime reporter, Gabriella Giovanni, she was in a place I never expected to find her. I was curious as to how this all would play out, but never in my wildest dreams did I expect to find her at the scene of such a grisly crime in which an entire family is murdered leaving only a baby girl as the sole survivor. But, the child's life still hangs in the balance as long as the killer is on the loose.

Gabriella takes this case very, very personally as she is recovering from a heartbreaking loss which has her affected her deeply. This case becomes yet another obsession for Gabriella as she attempts to cope with having lost her edge as a reporter, and with issues in her personal life. She will risk everything to ensure this killer is found and little baby Lucy is safe and in capable hands. But, will she lose everything and everyone she holds dear in the process?

This series has always had a dark edge to it, but this third installment is an all out emotional roller coaster from start to finish. One part crime drama with a race against time quality to it, steeped in a cover up type conspiracy, and one part relationship drama as Gabriella struggles to keep from going off the deep end and to keep her relationship with Donovan afloat, plus deal with her ever present personal demons.
I was really worried about our girl all through this book. She was certainly perched on the edge of the point of no return, and I began to think she was going to sink so far down in her despair she would never climb back out. The only thing holding her together was finding a killer and keep the child safe.
Will she be able to find the killer for the worst can happen? Where will Gabriella go from here?

Although we see Gabriella in the worst shape ever, I felt a sense of relief and a feeling of being unburdened by the book's end and while there are still some really uneasy feelings floating around, I think Gabriella will come out on the other side stronger and more stable than we've ever seen her. I have very high hopes for the future of the series.

If you like dark crime thrillers with compelling and well written characters you really should treat yourself with this series. You will not be disappointed!

“Blessed are Those Who Weep” is a gripping mystery by Kristi Belcamino. From the opening scene of a grisly multiple murder, heroine Gabriella Giovanni pulls you into a story that goes full throttle from start to finish. While dealing with her own personal struggles, she races to save the life of a baby before time runs out. Using all of her investigative skills, Gabriella follows a trail that leads from seedy nightclubs to the halls of the Pentagon. The characters are vivid and interesting. The story crackles with suspense. I really enjoyed this book. I stayed up way too late turning the pages of this story. It was not easy to put down. If you like the San Francisco beat and a headstrong heroine, you will enjoy this book.

Kristi Belcamino delivers a gripping story as she brings Gabriella Giovanni to life on the pages of BLESSED ARE THOSE WHO WEEP. She gives her main character the instincts of a seasoned newspaper reporter and also shows personal feelings regarding work, love and family. The drama of Belcamino’s story unfolds when Gabriella arrives for an interview and finds 5 dead bodies and a small child. Belcamino shares Gabriella’s history and explains how her past affects. The author delves into her main character life as a reporter and her personal life. Gabriella’s obsession to find the murderer is interfering with her role as a reporter. All of her actions are upsetting her boss, police, her family, and her lover.

On top of horrible murders, the author’s BLESSED ARE THOSE WHO WEEP is a story dealing with betrayal, manipulation, political cover-up, and depression. As each support character enter the storyline, the author shares their history and how each will affect the story. She also helps her readers understand some of the personal issues Gabriella is dealing with and how her actions are affecting those she loves.

A lot of my friends are into mysteries, and all of a sudden, it seemed like everyone was talking about this book. When that happens, I tend to pay attention.

This is the third book in a series, but it functions really well as a standalone. (I do want to go back and read the first two books, though; the first one especially tends to ricochet all through the events of this one---it didn't make me enjoy this any less, but it made me very curious to read it.)

I tend to really like books with journalists and this was no exception. I'm not sure how long Gabriella would really last in the news business (she became part of the story in this book, and that tends to not work out so well in terms of keeping your job) but it was also obvious that she really loved her job and was good at it.

The mystery in this is incredibly well done and I can guarantee you that you won't want to stop reading until you know exactly what's going on.

Recommended.

I love Gabriella Giovanni more with each of Belcamino's books. She's a crime fighting Sophia Loren and I can't get enough of her. Every time I read a new book in this series I find myself cooking up a pot of pasta fagioli, pouring a glass of red wine, and wishing I could afford a plane ticket to San Francisco.

This installment doesn't disappoint. An especially dark crime scene leaves Gabriella in the midst a complicated and messy murder investigation. Uncovering the mystery forces her to confront her personal demons. Belcamino keeps the pages turning! I accidentally stayed on my exercise bike and missed the close of Y's Kid Stuff. It's a good one!

At first I think she is a doll. Sitting there so still on the floor in her pink dress, chubby legs sticking out from her diaper, big black eyes unblinking, staring at something I can’t see. A ribbon hangs loose in her hair. Something that looks like chocolate is smeared around her mouth and one cheek.
. . .
“Are you in there, Mrs. Martin? It’s Gabriella Giovanni from the Bay Herald. We spoke yesterday.” Silence. As if my voice has flicked a switch, the child moves and talks, babbling. “Mamamama. Maaamamama.” She picks something up. Something floppy and pale and long. Something with short red fingernails. An arm.
With those jump-out-of-your-skin opening paragraphs, author Kristi Belcamino invites us into the world of investigative reporter Gabriella Giovanni. Gabriella is a beautiful woman whose world is not a pretty one. She is a complex character with a past that not only haunts her, but defines much of her present life. I think if I had to choose a single word to describe her character, it would be obsessed. She’s obsessed with finding her sister’s killer, obsessed with becoming pregnant, obsessed with preventing the baby she finds at a murder scene from being returned to her only living parent. Despite the fact that Gabriella has a job she loves and a fiancée who loves her, she seems unable to overcome the obsessive behavior threatening her career, her health and her relationship with Detective Sean Donovan, a man so attractive his image graces the cover of the Sexiest Bay Area Cops calendar.

The first two books in the series are Blessed Are the Dead and Blessed Are the Meek. This third book, Blessed Are Those Who Weep, is a flawlessly written, fast paced book with a plot that is a perfect vehicle for Gabriella’s personality. Readers will find themselves needing to put the book down and walk away occasionally just to catch a break from her intensity. This book will definitely be a treat for those who love detailed murder investigations and intricate plot twists. Even though Gabriella thinks she has the killer nailed from the beginning, I was never sure she had it figured out and kept expecting a surprise perpetrator to pop out of the shadows, but . . . no spoilers! Secrets are revealed . . . even ones with international implications, bodies keep turning up everywhere, and Gabriella proves again and again that she will go to any lengths in pursuit of her obsessions. Blessed Are Those Who Weep is one of those books in which more questions are asked than you, the reader, think the author can ever answer, but with her keen attention to detail, Ms. Belcomino ties up every loose end in a very satisfying manner. The ending will be quite a revelation because you reach a point where you think there can be no good outcome for the characters in this book. Believe me, it will make the fact that you clung to edge of your seat from the opening paragraphs to the very last words worthwhile!

Critical Praise for Ms. Belcamino

In the third book of the Gabriella Giovanni series, author Kristi Belcamino gives us a quite different Gabriella. Although this amazing character is someone I quickly came to love in books one and two, Gabriella has from the beginning had ghosts and demons that tore at her happiness. She has the job she loves as a crime reporter on a major newspaper in the San Francisco area, and she has a partner who is the man she wants to spend the rest of her life with. But, hanging on to her past has cost Gabriella from fully believing in a happy-ever-after.

Family has always been important to Gabriella, and recent events in her life have made it even more so. Called to an apartment for what was termed by the caller the story of a lifetime, Gabriella stumbles into a murder scene, a family slaughtered. But in the midst of the carnage is a baby girl, unscathed, a survivor. Seeing this child brings up Gabriella’s grief about her miscarriage and starts her spiraling downward into a dark abyss. She becomes obsessed with the child and finding the person who slayed the child’s mother, grandparents, and uncle. Everything and everyone else in Gabriella’s life suffers in the wake. She becomes unfocused at work, unreachable in her relationship with Donovan, and unkempt in her physical appearance. She is the perfect metaphor for disheveled in every way.

Gabriella has always had a tendency for obsession, but in this story, obsession take a trip on speed. She is convinced that she knows who the killer of the slain family is, and she is committed to protecting the baby girl named Lucy from falling into anyone’s hands who might harm her. Although a mere ghost of her former self, Gabriella brutally pushes herself to find answers before a deadline of no return for Lucy. Even though her editor took her off the story due to her involvement, Gabriella digs deeper and deeper into a quagmire of cover-ups, a sex club, martial arts, and ties to the war in Iraq. In her determination to protect the surviving child Lucy, Gabriella throws caution to the wind more than ever and jeopardizes all that might save her in return.

Blessed are Those That Weep will have you wringing your hands in concern over whether Gabriella will survive with any semblance of a meaningful life. Kristi Belcamino knows how to do many things brilliantly as a writer. One of those skills is involving the reader emotionally, creating a vested interest that keeps the book in your hands, because you have to know how the characters fare in the aftermath of having their lives torn apart. And, it’s hard to find a better opening sequence than what begins the tale in Blessed Are Those Who Weep. Belcamino is a master at taking the reader quickly into the action and maintaining an intense pace all the way to the end. It’s safe to say that readers of this electrifying series will need a moment to catch their breaths when the last page is turned.

Kristi Belcamino delivers a riveting and suspenseful mystery that will bring you right down into the darkness that lies within human nature and the consequences of actions both good and bad.

Book Review

For reporter Gabriella Giovanni, staying away from a good story is not something that she wants to do. However, when she stumbles upon a gruesome scene and sees a baby sitting there as the only survivor, those close to her want her to step back from this one. But can she really let this go?

As the story progresses, Gabriella discovers more than what she was anticipating. With ties to the military and the police force, she is determined to unearth the secrets that are being so carefully guarded. However, as each stone is turned over, it becomes more and more clear that continuing down this path is going to be dangerous.

In the third installment of the Gabriella Giovanni Mystery series, Kristi brings it. The story is engrossing, smart, witty, and disturbing in the best possible way! On top of that, I love the sprinkling of Italianisms that I myself know all too well. Those are the moments that bring a smile to my face and allow the book to take a moment from the darkness of the mystery itself.

As the pages fly by, the author manages to give you all the details and nitty gritty that you want, but still maintaining the heart of the story. The parallels with the story’s development and Gabriella’s are so well crafted, that you cannot help but fall deeper and deeper into this world. I have said this a few times before, but a great mystery (to me anyway), is one that you don’t look for the killer or try to pick out the clues. A great mystery unravels in front of you and takes you on a ride with the characters. Kristi Belcamino’s books do just that.

I cannot recommend this book and this series more. The stories will grab you and pull you in, so I suggest you load up your eReader or pick up the three books at your local store. Then curl up, take the phone off the hook (or put it on silent), and just start reading. You will not be sorry.

Series Note: All the books in the Gabriella Giovanni Mystery series can be read as a standalone novel. They each have a story that will begin and end within the book. However, there are some threads that tie them together and are carried throughout the series. Gabriella’s ongoing search for her sister’s killer and her personal relationships will be developed throughout all the books.

I thoroughly enjoyed the first two books in the Gabriella Giovanni series where she makes a living as a reporter on the crime beat in San Francisco. Both told a good and entertaining story, the writing was excellent and developed the characters well. I made a connection with Gabriella and cared about what happened in her life. I realized that she was deeply flawed and that made her character all the more appealing.
In the author’s third book, Blessed Are Those Who Weep, Ms. Belcamino reaches new heights. When I began the book I did not like the story one bit. Gabriella was depressed and in crisis. I did not want to read about her when she was so distressed. I was not even sure I wanted to continue with the book. I was convinced the author had only two books in her and the third was a return to literary mediocrity. Fortunately, I finished the book.
Ms. Belcamino has written a stunning book. Her descriptions of Gabtiella’s state, both mental and physical are nothing short of brilliant. I wanted to dive into this book and do whatever I could to help this woman cope with her situations. She had suffered a recent miscarriage, her sister had been abducted and murdered some twenty years ago and after walking into the scene of a slaughter with multiple victims, she rescued a baby who had somehow survived the carnage. Yes, Gabriella was a mess and it was very negatively affecting her life and her relationships with others, including her love relationship. This was not what I wanted to read.
The genius of Ms. Belcamino’s book is that you read it, not like what is going on with the protagonist yet still realize that it is her skill as a writer that keeps drawing you in. With the first two books I would come to the end of a chapter and fight with myself as to whether I would read another chapter or get some much needed sleep. In Weep there was no fight. I just kept reading. And make no mistake here. In addition to great writing, Ms. Belcamino tells a very good story. Replete with military cover ups, police corruption and some murders where the killer uses martial arts weapons, the reader is never bored with Giovanni’s investigation.
At the end of the book when Gabriella is writing the newspaper story that ties things up, the reader should be thinking Pulitzer for her investigative reporting. Giovanni has hit the big time with a national story. The same is true of Ms. Belcamino. She is on the cusp of being included in the same breath of America’s best mystery writers. For my money, she has hit the big time.

-All great elements for a great story and executed very well.
-You start with a driven female reporter who is having issues because of a miscarriage, and mix in a horrific murder scene where a whole family was killed with a samurai sword; a clandestine military plot; a rogue elite soldier; a Chinese martial art club along with a mysterious "suicide", and excellent writing, and this makes for a great read.
-Gabriela Giovanni, a reporter for a local newspaper in San Francisco receives a call to meet a woman at her apartment. The information the woman wants to give her is too sensitive to give over the phone. When Gabriela shows up, the door to the apartment is slightly open, and when she pushes on it, there's slight resistance from something behind the door. As she enters, she sees what looks like a little doll, but it's a little child who is sitting in the middle of dead bodies that have been cut up, with blood throughout the rooms. Gabriela is shocked when she sees this, and removes the child but becomes totally protective over the little girl.
-She now has to back track to discover what it was that the mother was trying to tell her. Through the grandmother of the child, she discovers that the child's father is dangerous and a soldier who is capable of this type of carnage. He's supposed to be in Iraq, and according to all information coming from the military, he still there, but, when Gabriela goes to the apartment on her own to search it for clues, she's attacked and barely escaped with her life by someone that she swears looks just like the child's father.
-Because of her issues with her miscarriage, and her fixation with the welfare of this baby that she found, everyone around her thinks she has become delusional. She is so driven, and so persistent, that she secretly continues to research the case even though her superiors at the newspaper insist she back off from covering the case and her boyfriend feels he has to leave her because she's become a different person. The fate of this child becomes all consuming for her, as she discovers that the baby will be given over to the father who is supposedly coming back from Iraq shortly, but it's a father who Gabriela believes will end up killing the child.
-Even as Gabriela digs deeper, so many questions still remain, but the beauty is, as the book progresses towards the end and the loose ends are tied together, everything makes sense.
-Very good, suspenseful and satisfying story.

Opening with a gut-wrenching scene, author Kristi Belcamino quickly pulls readers into her latest release, BLESSED ARE THOSE WHO WEEP, the third installment in her Gabriella Giovanni Mystery series.

Seasoned journalist Gabriella Giovanni finds more than she bargained for when she goes for an interview. She discovers five dead bodies and a baby sitting in the blood.

When the baby girl is taken out of Gabriella’s care by a social worker, she is determined to get to the heart of the tragedy. She follows leads to the end despite placing herself in danger in more ways than one.

Once again the author takes a riveting plot and places the reader in the middle of the action. The story is adrenaline-fueled, fast pace, hold you on the edge of your seat action from beginning to end. The author’s vivid descriptions and eye for detail brings the settings to life.

The characters are well-developed with flaws and desires readers can relate to. Gabriella is a strong protagonist with a heart for family and friends. The secondary characters add depth to the story.

Belcamino captures the conflicts of the journalist in Gabriella, as well as in her personal life. The author blends and weaves the storyline for an entertaining suspenseful ride you won’t soon forget.

BLESSED ARE THOSE WHO WEEP isn’t a book you can easily put down once you begin. This thriller will tug on your heartstrings as the action pulls you in deeper. New readers won’t be left in the dark if they start with this installment, but may find they want to know more about Gabriella and her life to the point they seek out the earlier installments.

FTC Full Disclosure – A copy of this book was sent to me by the publisher in hopes I would review it. However, receiving the complimentary copy did not influence my review. The thoughts are completely my own and given honestly and freely.

Blessed are those Who Weep by Kristi Belcamino is a Witness Impulse publication. I was provided an advance copy of this book by the publisher and Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review.

This book, the third featuring San Francisco-area newspaper reporter Gabriella Giovanni, is a headline maker in its own right from the very first words. The action unfolds immediately, evolving deftly into twists and turns that wind their way through a myriad of physical locations as well as through the minds and souls of Gabriella and several other characters.
Real life aspects of Gabriella's life, loves and family blend seamlessly into the story. Their placement parallels the plot perfectly and adds an extra ingredient that is like finding the perfect wine to compliment your favorite meal.
In discovering Miss Belcamino's work, I have found a concept I can only describe as "virtual read-ality". I have never felt like I was walking alongside a character and feeling the myriad of emotions like Gabriella experiences (personally and professionally), ever before. Her scenes are vividly portrayed without excess, allowing a flow to the story. It grips you, bringing you along with it from start to finish with a pace that allows you to get involved in the action without sacrificing believable, human characters.
Blessed are those who discover Kristi Belcamino, for they shall enjoy wonderful books.

Blessed are Those Who Weep is more than a crime novel, it contains an undercurrent of postpartum depression and PTSD that is so real that in its description that you yourself will feel the effects. Kristi Belcamino captures the mental state of a woman who has lost a child, and slips you into her shoes. Gabriella is struggling. You see it in her appearance, her thoughts, her obsessions, and her diet. At times, you will want to scream at Gabriella to get a grip, but that's the catch, PTSD and postpartum depression isn't a wake up and be alright today health issue. It puts a strain on everything you touch, and I commend Belcamino for tackling this and putting it at the forefront of her novel. I loved that Donovan and Gabriella fought and pushed each other away. I wondered at tikmes if Donovan would stick around. I won't give the end away, but it was nice to see how two people navigate the waters of tragedy together. While, Blessed are Those Who Weep, isn't a day at the beach, it isn't to be missed. Like the previous two novels, Belcamino tackles social issues, and the moments of levity are to be relished.

Kristi Belcamino has done it again! In her third novel in the Gabriella Giovanni crime reporter series, Blessed Are Those Who Weep, Belcamino knocks it out of the park. All of the novels in this series are deep, intense, addictive stories that have you begging for the next one to drop soon. And they do! How Belcamino keeps banging out these novels so fast and having them be so good is beyond me but I am not going to question this gift horse!

Belcamino's heroine, a beautiful, quirky, witty Italian character, not unlike the author herself, will have you hooked early on and have you feel like you are in the heart of the pulse pounding action all the way through. The books are full of plot twists and enthralling character development -- not to mention a hunky heart throb -- that will have you coming back for more just like I am. This latest installment punches you in the gut in Chapter One and doesn't let up until the end. Can't wait to see what Belcamino has in store for us - and 'Ella! - in the next one!

In this third installment of her Gabriella Giovanni mystery series, Belcamino continues to up the ante, creating even more tension and more page-turning suspense than ever. While perfectly suitable to stand on its own for the uninitiated reader, Blessed Are Those Who Weep rewards readers of the first two books with Gabriella’s continued development as someone whose painful past serves as motivation for her pursuit of justice. It starts out with a bang of a gruesome scene, which pulls at the heartstrings even while we flinch in disgust. Though there’s plenty of blood and crime, some of the most tension-ridden scenes are those between Giovanni and the man she loves, Donovan.

Even after the main plot plays out to its suspenseful climax, even as things are winding down, the reader is left wanting more, because the author has skillfully woven a subplot that runs through all three books and—we just know it—will continue into the fourth.

In the third Gabriella Giovanni mystery, Kristi Belcamino takes the reader on an intense hunt for both a vicious killer and the innocent child that may fall victim to his cruelty. As the danger grows for Gabriella and those who are trying to identify and apprehend the murderer, she courageously risks her life, as well as her relationship with the man she loves, in order to stop the carnage. The story is gripping and the characters are genuine. The interplay works well between Gabriella's personal hopes and dreams and her desire to find justice on a much larger scale in the world. I can't wait for the next book!

Kristi has given us another gift with a smart, exciting story, in her highly anticipated third installment of her "Blessed" series, Blessed are Those Who Weep. Kristi keeps true to main character, Gabriella Giovanni, who is intelligent, dedicated, personable, complex, and perfectly imperfect. Gabriella becomes more likable with each book, and makes you want to join her at Nana's house for Sunday dinner! Kristi weaves the story through a series of twists and turns with ease, and you are along for the ride! Grab a glass of wine, and enjoy this suspenseful page-turner!

Gabriella frustrated me this time around

I thought the mystery in this book was entertaining, but I found Gabrielle's behavior to be all over the place. Contextually, it made sense, but knowing that there were reasons for her to act the way she did didn't make me like it any better. I groaned aloud as she said and did all the wrong things time and again. I liked the note the book ended on much better, and hope that I enjoy the next release in this series more than I did this outing.

I loved this book. The third in her series was yet another non stop read for me. I finished it in one sitting. Not by choice It was such a page turner I HAD to finish before I could sleep.

This novel went a bit deeper into the characters and I felt I got to know them all even more. Great character development with a fast paced plot is a winning combination for me. I can't wait to read more by this author. I am a huge fan.

This is a must read!

Another exceptional book in the Gabriella series!! I was sucked in with the first sentence and raced through to the end. The descriptions are so life like, it is like I am there. And that poor baby! I just knew Gabriella would become attached. I love Gabriella and Donovan and really enjoy getting to know them and watching them change and grow. I am excited to start #4 which just arrived in my mailbox!

A thumping good read. I enjoyed the story as well as the characters, and tore through this book in under 24 hours. It has a tremendous need-to-know-what-happens factor, both for the baby and for Gabriella. I'm very much looking forward to the next book in the series, and to seeing what Gabriella is up to in the future.

What a great series. Gabriella is a great character and I love how real she seems as a person.
This time Gabriella has a case that is really close to home for her due to the loss of her baby.
Then at the end when you know who the killer is and find out what it went through, it was almost
Heartbreaking as to find out what his story was. This one definitely had a lot of emotions in it.

Absolutely amazing addition to the series, I can not wait for the next installment.

The third installment of the series has by far surpassed my expectations set previously by the other two installments (not that it was an easy feat to accomplish). I am impatiently waiting for the fourth installment.

This book centers on Gabriella getting her life on track. For a while I found her to be very aggravating
but it seems Donovan helped her straighten out. Book was not as nerve wrecking as the other books,
but I still found good reading. I am now going to read #4 which is the last book in the series.
Maybe author will write more books with Gabriella and Donovan. They make a good pair.

What a fantastic book

I've read all three books. This is by far the best. I couldn't stop reading. I had to finish it. The beginning grabs you and you are sucked to a wonderful story. I recommend this to all. Good job to Kristie Belcomino!

I loved the beginning of the book but thought it slowed for a bit. I'm so glad I finished reading the book. I started to realize all that the main character was going through. A very good mystery. I'm going to purchase the next book in this series.

Belcamino weaves an engrossing story. I loved her first two books in this series. The third installment does not disappoint. I would recommend this series for casual and avid readers alike.

When Gabriella Giovanna, a San Francisco reporter for the Bay Herald, arrives for a scheduled interview with Maria Martin she discovers a gruesome mass murder. The only person left alive is a baby less than a year old. She sits among the bodies holding her mother’s severed arm.

Gabriella cleans up the baby first and calls 911 second. By the time the police arrive the baby has bonded to Gabriella and doesn’t want to be touched by anyone else. Gabriella, who has a recent stillbirth in her past, bonds with her as well. She is allowed to hold on the baby until she arrives at the police station where the child is taken by social services.

Police questioning goes on well past her midnight deadline while other reporters jump on her story. Since she’s now part of the murder case, the Bay Herald turns the story over to another reporter. This doesn’t stop Gabriella from investigating. What reason could anyone have to murder this entire family? Nothing was taken. There wasn’t much to take.

The baby is put into foster care until her father arrives from Iraq. This won’t happen for two weeks and the army won’t say why which is another mystery. Gabriella soon has a suspect but he has an unbeatable alibi furnished by the United States Army.

Despite the gore, the first scene is touching. Gabriella Giovanna is a believable and likable heroine. She’s an Italian American suffering from depression, an award winning reporter and a practicing Catholic who loves her job and her fiancé. She’s having trouble holding on to both because she can’t concentrate on the present while worrying about becoming pregnant and needing to resolve issues from her past. This is the third book in a knockout series.
