Extending the Self examines volunteerism in the Philippines through the lens of the Filipino concept of “Kapwa” (shared identity / fellow-being). The book investigates why Filipinos volunteer not simply out of altruism or obligation, but because of a deep sense of connection and shared humanity that sees the “other” as part of the self.
Drawing on testimonies, reflections, and narratives from volunteers across different campuses of Ugnayan ng Pahinungod (the volunteer service arm of University of the Philippines), as well as interviews with volunteers and non-volunteers (aged 18 to over 60) from provinces in Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao, the study reveals three interrelated dimensions governing volunteerism in the Filipino context: Kapwa, free will (kusa), and reciprocity (kapalit — though “not as profit/benefit, but as acknowledging dignity and solidarity”).
