Supernatural Lovers #3

The Vampire's Hunter: Part One

Rate this book
Raven is alive, though he’s not like he was before.

Turned into a vampire by his former captor, he has to adjust not only to drinking blood, but also to existing after everything else he experienced at the hands of his captor.

Maxim is a powerful vampire hunter and well-regarded in supernatural society, being a vampire himself. Raven doesn’t understand why a man like that would do anything to protect him, and he is afraid to find out that Maxim’s apparent kindness is something else entirely.

And yet, time and again, Maxim forgives Raven’s lapses in judgment, the things he does only to regret them moments later. Raven can’t decide what it means or what anything means anymore. He’s adrift, yet wherever he turns, Maxim is there to keep him from drowning.

Author’s This story continues right after the previous ones in the series, and while it follows different main characters, it is recommended you read the other books first. Raven is a survivor, and it’s not easy for him to come to terms with what happened. The story has strong hurt/comfort themes and is largely focused on Raven finding his way forward.

Be still my heart

I’m often very bad at picking favourites. I find it difficult to choose just one thing when there are often so many lovely things to choose from and to pick just one would somehow be unfair to all the other lovely things. That being said, I do sometimes find there are authors I think come as close as one ever can to being favourites. It’s almost like they’re a bit more closely held because I know, without fail, that I will love their books in a deeper way and a way that feels more fulfilled and properly content. Alexa has over time perhaps become the one of the very few authors who have yet to ever leave me feeling anything less than truly happy when I read her books. I say this to make it clear that I think this may be my favourite of her books.

I adored Maxim when we first met him; he’s sweet and funny and snarky in a wonderfully joyful way (because snark can be joyful) and he has an underlying competence and dedication to justice that soothes my justice obsessed heart. I knew I would love his book. It was foregone conclusion really that I would love getting more of him and his lovely family. I just don’t think I was prepared for how much I would love it and love Raven. This is a book that deals with the aftermath of something really unquantifiably horrible; there is no putting into words the horror Raven suffered and the truly evil depths those creatures plumbed in torturing him. It should have been a book that was hard to read merely because of that; yet, it was so sweetly hopeful even in moments where logically hope and sweetness shouldn’t have existed. There was something so gentle and honest about it. There weren’t any magic shortcuts. Being a vampire didn’t magically make it better. There was no magic that could fix what had happened. There was just love and acceptance and patience. It was… beautiful despite it coming from such evil. Maxim (and Jason, Heath, Bryan and Clement) were just so full of love and support and gentle strength.

Somehow, on top of all of that there were also the bright spots of sheer fun and amusement. Maxim’s delightful teasing of Heath; Clement being his grumpily sweet self; Bryan’s adorable ministrations towards Heath; Jason’s dedication to enjoying a new diet no matter how ill advised; and, Heath being so unbelievably frazzled by Maxim and life in general. All that is to say that I adored this book. I can’t wait to see what comes next but at the same time I would happily read this again and again despite wanting what comes next because it is so lovely all by itself.

I want to start by saying that I have loved the previous books in this series, I've enjoyed the characters, and I love Alexa's writing. Unfortunately this one just didn't do it for me, I didn't feel a connection between any of these characters. It didn't feel like a romance book to me, i know this book is mainly focused on Raven's healing journey which is completely understandable, I was just left without really feeling a connection between any of the characters.

I also found it at times difficult to keep track of everything going on as there were a lot of different characters to keep track of, as well as the POV's seeming to switch mid chapter at times.

This is just MY experience, and my opinion, perhaps I just wasn't in the right headspace for this book, or maybe I missed something whilst reading. Despite my review, and my rating, please consider giving this book a chance as I absolutely loved the other books in this series! Oh! I think the side characters have A LOT of potential and I hope that eventually they get their own books.

I adore Maxim. He is such a sparkly eccentric vampire and enjoys getting under people’s skin. He is a little out of his depth though with poor sweet Raven. Not really but he has his work cut out for him in trying to help the young man heal and move on with his new vampire side. Raven struggles adapting and it hurts to watch because we all want him to recover from his ordeal. Maxim is patient though and knows what to do - be there for him and prove he will take care of him. This book is a bit heavier than the others in the series due to Raven’s situation but it was an enjoyable read and I recommend it if you liked The Doctor’s Wolf. This is not just a slow burn - it’s glacial, but that is what Raven needs right now. Just be aware of the trigger warnings and keep your own mental health in mind. Raven is working on his mental health and you should too.

The Vampire's Hunter: Part One is the third book in the Supernatural Lovers series. This series is best read in order. This is the story of Raven a new vampire and Maxim a vampire hunter who is also an old vampire. I couldn't put this book down once I started it. I love the way Alexa Piper writes the characters and makes you care about them. I loved these two and watching Maxim take care of Raven was perfect. I loved the characters and world building that went into this series. I also loved the chemistry between these two. I can't wait for the next book in the series. I would definitely recommend this book and series as 5 star reads.

Going in, you should know that this is predominately a story of healing. It's about Raven coming to terms with what has been done to him and how his life has been changed.

When I say slowest of slow burns, I mean glacial, okay? Yet it's sweet seeing them leaning towards each other, seeing how Raven suits Maxim. I just know part 2 is going to be great, seeing Raven come into his own him and Maxim being super in love.

It's a very character driven story with more than 1 potential couple. I loved getting to know Raven and Maxim much better, as well as the glimpses into Heath, Jason, Bryan, and Clement.

There was even a cute dog! What more can you ask for?

Oh my goodness, oh my goodness! I knew Maxim’s story would be good, but this, I’m stunned. Piper gives us Maxim and Raven’s story. So poignant, so heartbreaking but with light heart moments (fueled by alcohol!). Maxim being there for Raven (please read any and all TW/CW’s) but Raven also being there for Maxim. This isn’t slow burn, this is a sloth crossing a 12 lane highway carrying a barely burning ember in a bucket burn. But it has to be that way for these two. Along the journey we get more Jason, Heath, Bryan, and Clement. And of course, Adler and Gordon. Ooh, Ume. Piper is truly part of the “found family” pantheon. Just love it so much, but now when we will get Part 2!

After learning about Raven's horrific experience in being turned into a vampire I totally understand why we need a part one and part two for Raven and Maxim. Maxim is a wonderful older vampire as well as a dedicated vampire hunter. Maxim knows right from wrong and wants to fight for all things good. And his little Raven is pure goodness he just needs some healing, training and patience. And Love too but this is a slow progression. I was so happy to have all our other couples being such an integral part of everything. I especially enjoyed Clement being grumpy about it all still!

When I saw that Maxim was getting his own book I was ecstatic. Maxim found Raven, who was taken, and brought him home. He was forced to turn him into a vampire due to the damage done. He helped Raven in a lot of ways. Maxim tasked Raven to help sort out his “junk room” where it help all his memories from his long life. I loved how Jason, who is Raven’s friend, is there for him as well along with Heath, who is Maxim’s son. This is a slow burn book with no romance. It is all about Raven healing and accepting the fact that he is now a vampire. I cannot wait for part 2 to come out.

This book is the first part in a duology, so the story is not finished here, you need to read the second part.
When Alexa Piper says slow burn you better believe it!
Maxim was a very intriguing character in The Doctor's Wolf, so very different to my mental image of hunters, so I wanted to read more about him and to learn how his mind works. He is better than expected, he shows so many different faces that is hard to tell which one is the real one..
Raven is heartbreaking. I think he is very well written, his trauma impacts every aspect of his life, joined to his change are fundamental in how he behaves. You feel the way he is going through the motions of life instead of living, but he slowly starts to feel more present, day by day everything is a less hard and he finds solace in his dog, Maxim and his friends, old and new.
